Seren Ffordd & Oophoi - The Martian Chronicles Seren Ffordd & Oophoi - The Martian Chronicles (Hypnos section)
(Price: $12.99)
The Martian Chronicles, inspired by Ray Bradbury's story collection of the same name, sounds very much like the soundtrack to a mysterious and strange science fiction film that exists only in the imaginations of Seren Ffordd and Oöphoi. These seven tracks, while slow, moody and at times weirdly alien, also evoke a drama and emotional depth absent from much recent ambient music. It's a complex and beautiful mixture of electronic instruments, field recordings and percussion.

These artists will both likely be familiar to Hypnos listeners. Seren Ffordd has released several albums on our Hypnos Secret Sound imprint, and also contributed to the Hypnos compilation Sounds of a Universe Overheard. The name Seren Ffordd (real name Andy Benford) is Welsh for Star Road, Way of Stars or Milky Way.

Oöphoi himself released Athlit in 2002, Distance to Zero (with Paul Vnuk) in 2006, and his Nebulae group project album Path of White Clouds in 2011, all on Hypnos. Gianluigi Gasparetti, the man behind Oöphoi, first became known for creating the excellent Italian music periodical Deep Listenings. His Oöphoi persona burst onto the ambient music scene in the late 1990s and quickly became one of the most talented and prolific sound artists around. He founded the now-defunct labels Umbra and Penumbra, which released the earliest recordings of Seren Ffordd. After working together in this capacity for several years The Martian Chronicles is their first collaboration, but not their last; the pair has already completed another full album worth of material.

A Produce & Loren Nerell - Intangible A Produce & Loren Nerell - Intangible (Hypnos section)
(Price: $12.99)
2011. The first collaboration between two artists well-known to Hypnos listeners and fans of ambient & experimental music in general.

While Intangible has a meditative and tranquil drifting quality, it also incorporates more melodic and rhythmic elements than most ambient music of the present day. Listeners who like their ambience musical will enjoy this as much as those who like their drones deep and mystical.

Though it's the duo's first collaboration together, both of them have been releasing music for about a quarter century. These guys are responsible for some of our "Desert Island Disc" listening material here at Hypnos HQ (A Smooth Surface and Lilin Dewa are both long-time favorites). Often at Hypnos we try to introduce new, fresh talent to our listeners, but this is a case of two music-makers who know all the tricks, and yet continue to create work as vibrant and inspired as anything on the cutting edge.

A Produce has released ten albums, including two on Hypnos (Smile on the Void solo, and Altara in collaboration with Hypnos founder M. Griffin). Loren Nerell has released solo work on Amplexus, Soleilmoon, and Side Effects, and collaborated with ambient music giant Steve Roach on Terraform in 2006.

Disturbed Earth / Steve Brand - What is Memory? (cdr) (Relaxed Machinery category)
(Price: $9.99 cdr)
69 minute extended track -- mp3 sample clip collage

Notes by Steve Brand:
What Is Memory? is a 69-minute aural exploration by Dean Richards/Disturbed Earth (Australia) and myself, Steve Brand (U.S.) of the nature of memory and time, utilizing keyboard atmospheres, flutes and voice. The impetus for this piece was born out of personal phone conversations between Dean and myself. We both have experienced how time can transform memory, how memories can become distorted, built-up into almost legendary proportions, clouded with sentiment. We also know that looking back into memories, with a clearer mind in the present, can transmute once-painful memories into those which empower and propel us into a new future.

Review by Eyes Cast Down:
"What is Memory? is the fifth collaboration between Disturbed Earth (Dean Richards) and Steve Brand, following a trilogy (Broken Gold, Busy With Dreams and The Rest of Time) and followup album (The First Day Unnamed) on AtmoWorks in 2008-09. For reviewing purposes, I listened closely, but I’m sure this will make an awesome background soundworld as well (though good luck keeping it in the background). It is a delightful, magical journey. An important aspect, well worth pointing out, is that the pacing is masterfully managed throughout. Our guide is thoroughly experienced, inspiring our full confidence, keeping our impatience in check.

As is usual when trying to convey the magic of music by either of these artists, words are sadly inadequate. One can only encourage listeners, trusting that when they hear the music, all will be understood, words notwithstanding. I simply love this album, and if you’re even a casual listener of ambient music, I believe you will too... Highly recommended!"

Saul Stokes - Sleek Nucleus (Stokes category)
(Price: $12.99)
Saul Stokes is definitely one of the most popular artists associated with Hypnos (though he has also released a lot of music for other labels as well). This is Saul's first self-released CD, in a distinctive folder-type package, but the music still has that recognizable "Stokes sound."

Saul says: Stokes is pleased to announce the release of Sleek Nucleus. Eight effervescent songscapes that simply redefine electronic music. Each song is a crafted fusion of contemporary rhythm and melody sculpted from Stokes' hand-made electronic instruments. A lasting and unforgettable electronic album, Sleek Nucleus continues Stokes' 17 year history of merging sonic innovation with soulful song composition.

Steve Brand - Avatara Steve Brand - Avatara (Hypnos section)
(Price: $12.99)
Steve Brand got his start releasing experimental music under the name "Augur," and more recently switched over to releasing music under his own name (both solo and in collaboration with such artists as Ishq and Disturbed Earth) on the Atmoworks, Hypnos Secret Sounds and Relaxed Machinery labels. He's quickly established himself as one of the more interesting and distinctive artists working in ambient music, and having released two albums Bridge to Nowhere and Children of Alcyone on Hypnos Secret Sounds in 2008 and 2009, we're very excited to follow up with Steve Brand's new album Avatara on the main Hypnos imprint. This album has a ritual feel common to many of Brand's recordings, though Avatara is more ambient and less percussive. The recording starts out in a place of low-key contemplation and evolves through distinct stages and moods, though it is always gentle and meditative.

Steve Brand describes some of the inspirations behind this album:
Avatara is Sanskrit for "descent" in the sense of a deity's descent from heaven to earth. Avatara is inspired by the various avatars of various ages and cultures...Yeshua, Quan Yin, Buddha, Brigit, Krishna, Saint Germain, White Buffalo Calf Woman, and others. I’m fascinated by the idea and the various stories in various ages and cultures of humans becoming "ascended masters," or avatars, non-human beings that still are attached to humans and choose to returns to Earth to assist them. The stories vary, and almost every culture has its masters, but one thing is consistent throughout each of their stories, they've realized a more expanded expression of being and awareness, of what we are and what we are capable of, and return to assist other human beings.

Saul Stokes - Vast (Foundry category)
(Price: $13.99)
Saul Stokes returns to the music scene with Vast, a showcase for his unique brand of electronica. Forrest Fang & Carl Weingarten - Invisibility (Foundry category)
(Price: $13.99)
Invisibility emerges from a collaboration between Forrest Fang and Carl Weingarten, built on the strong and distinct musical personalities of these two artists. Carl Weingarten displays his assured guitar playing, a unique style that exploits a variety of sounds and a penetrating melodic sensibility. Forrest Fang builds well-balanced arrangements and develops intricate textural tapestries with a sonic palette drawn largely, but not exclusively, from Weingarten's guitar work. The result is a series of enthralling landscapes and tableaus, subtly, but definitively, coloured by the musical insight of Fang and Weingarten. And while the integration of guitar, synthesis and processing may suggest a kind of invisibility in terms of seamlessness, the music is anything but invisible. On first hearing Invisibility is beautifully simple, but repeated listenings will reveal the strong underlying texture and structure that makes this release special... (more/buy)
M. Bentley - This World (Foundry category)
(Price: $13.99)
This World gracefully integrates M. Bentley's various approaches to sound design and composition. Created with a combination of DSP tools, field recordings and more conventional synthesis, the suites Chronos & Kairos and Import are related thematically and conceptually. These pieces are extended audio snapshots, sonic gestures towards narrative and story-telling. In one sense this is programme music for the 21st century, or perhaps a soundtrack for memoirs never written.... (more/buy)
Steve Roach - Immersion Five: Circadian Rhythms (2CD) (Steve Roach category)
(Price: $20.99 2CD)
The Immersion series takes a compelling turn, moving towards a new perspective on Steve\'s Immersion experience. Disc one, Circadian Rhythms explores a sensual flow of harmonic suspension and sparse melodic mantra-like patterns hovering over rhythmic spaces and mercurial zones. Opening up within an organic analog modular garden of sound, a pulsing undulating groove spiral emerges, creating a suspended sensation of constant flow while hovering in the now. Circadian Rhythms moves through a continuous 73-minute flow in three phases.

Disc two, Shroud of Night was created from a blend of Steve\'s unique textural electric guitar and harmonic synth alchemy. The strands of emotion contained within this long-form atmosphere take on a feeling of clouds illuminated by full moonlight wafting into the deep hours of the night. This is a place of pure immersion and sonic warmth. Tested on infinite-repeat mode for over a year throughout all times of the day, into the night and beyond. Immerse thyself, once again... Nebulæ - The Path of White Clouds Nebulæ - The Path of White Clouds (Hypnos section)
(Price: $12.99)
Hypnos is pleased to reissue this classic ambient album first released by the Stella Maris label. Nebulæ (previously known as "Nebula") is an European ambient supergroup of sorts, featuring Oophoi, Tau Ceti, Mathias Grassow, Klaus Wiese, Lorenzo Pierobon, Luna, and Mauro Malgrande. This is a beautiful, ethereal and abstract ambient recording, which certainly deserved greater attention than it received prior to the demise of Stella Maris, which existed only long enough to release two Nebula albums. That first release was a limited edition CDR but our reissue is a professionally manufactured CD in a beautiful digipak with new graphics.

The Path of White Clouds explores a serene and otherworldly soundspace. Meditative and gentle, these six tracks are sure to appeal to listeners who enjoy the more spacious ambient works released by Oophoi during the height of his Umbra and Penumra sister labels. The sound sources utilized here lean more toward the organic and physical instruments, and electronic processing and synthesizers are used subtly to accentuate the rest.

In the years since this album was released, Oophoi has grown from just another new practitioner of ambient music to a recording artist as respected and well-loved as any other. We at Hypnos have released other Oophoi works such as Athlit, and his collaboration with Paul Vnuk Jr. (of Ma Ja Le), Distance to Zero. We also have an upcoming release The Martian Chronicles by Oophoi with Seren Ffordd. Usually we focus on releasing new projects, but sometimes a significant early work becomes completely unavailable. In a case such as this, the material strong enough taht we're sure listeners will feel it compares favorably with anything recorded since. The Path of White Clouds deserves to be heard.

(Price: $16.99 2CD)
"Blink twice, listen carelessly and you\'ll fail to discern the minutiae Spybey meticulously works into every one of the pieces sprawling across this 2-CD set's eminent domain. Spybey works hard at his art so you don't have to: rather, as the listener, the participant, the absorber, it\'s more important to ignore categorical tags such as industrial, ambient, soundscape, et al, and instead gorge deeply on a wriggling, sometimes confrontational puzzlebox of sounds erupting from a bevy of mysterious sources." -Lens Records... Gnome & Spybey - Beyond Willie's Place (Soleilmoon category)
(Price: $15.99)
Digipak Release. "Mark Spybey's been having his way with rhythm and noise for so long that the motifs he's ascribed over the years are practically commonplace amongst the novice post-industrialist, or hell, the post-whatever. His is a sound that summons any number of nocturnal beasties from the ether. Throughout the last 25-plus years, he's plied his trade and remarkable sonic mojo both solo and in the company of many a forward-thinking electronic engineer. His collaborators include cEvin Key, Eric Pounder, Jean-Yves Theriault, Jarboe, Mick Harris, Martin Atkins, James Plotkin, Mark Nugent, Orphx, Phil Western, David Wright, Zev Asher, Darryl Neudorf, Ryan Moore, Niels van Hoorn, Kinder Atom, Evolution Control Committee, Chris Connelly and others. It's as Dead Voices On Air, however, that some of his most startling ideas emerge fully-realized and fully-armed; of course, to hear Spybey tell it, once art leaves the nest it's up to (once again) the recipient to assume the role of engager: My work is created in isolation from external references. That is the ideal I strive for. Only in this way is it possible to allow the listener an opportunity to create their own understanding of the music, or, as the artist Joseph Beuys once said, One should resort to interpretation only in an emergency." -Tourette Records... Rapoon - Media Studies (Soleilmoon category)
(Price: $21.99)
Digipak Release. These recordings include the voice of David Icke. They reflect on the role of the media in shaping and informing opinions (the war in Iraq for example showed the shameless use of the media by a government intent on war whatever the real facts were) and in furthering prejudices and persecution of those who have differing views and dare to express them . In 1991 Icke was interviewed on a well known prime time chat show with the sole purpose of public humiliation for entertainment value. There are many instances of the use of media for manipulation and propaganda and many have succumbed to the pressures when the media has been directed against them by malevolent forces (Dr David Kelly, UN weapons inspector in Iraq) The words of David Icke are used here in a benign and impartial way. Whatever your views about the thoughts of the man you have to admire his tenacity against the odds... (more/buy)

Beautifully produced re-issue of the very first RAPOON album from 1992, released shortly after the split from ZOVIET FRANCE; a classic of ethno-ambient industrialism. Dark, esoteric and dense, with a lot of haunting loops, frightening whispers and subtle trance-inducing rhythms. Though it’s nearly 20 years old, it sounds fresh and actual, as now the spiral of time made its turn bringing us closer to this point of eternal dream circle, just one level higher (or lower, who knows?) Forrest Fang - Phantoms (Projekt category)
(Price: $13.99)
Phantoms is Forrest Fang's 9th solo album and the follow-up to his Projekt release, Gongland. Nearly eight years in the making, Phantoms builds on the gamelan-influenced soundscapes of its predecessor by weaving organic sounds of non-Western stringed and percussion instruments and filtering those sounds through a rich melodic tapestry of warm and vaporous atmospheres. Fang's subtly layered and continually evolving textures combine his Asian influences with his love of fractal algorithms that reflect the chaotic beauty of nature. The ambiences of Phantoms evoke a state of contemplation within a world in flux. The centerpiece of the album is a 23-minute ambient suite "The Hallucinations of Hung Tung" inspired by the otherworldly paintings of a Taiwanese fisherman and outsider artist... (more/buy)

Review by "eyes cast down"
"...plays like an urban version of the Solitudes nature series, built on unprocessed field recordings and mechanical drones, embellished with darklit synth chords whose tone and texture sometimes recall Pink Floyd. The effect is that of a city-noir soundscape at 3am, with your back window open just before (or after) the rain. The sense of urban location is uncanny and – unaccountably – mesmerizing. It doesn’t make sense, it just is.

“Subliminal” means “beneath the threshold of consciousness”; you can listen to this album as quiet background, let it get under your skin and color your space. If you’re in the city – especially if you’re alone, on a rainy night – these urban atmospherics can be your soundtrack, bringing the city’s slow, nocturnal pulse right into your listening space."

Herion - Out and About Herion - Out and About (Hypnos section)
(Price: $12.99)
2010. Herion is an Italian trio whose members include Emanuele Errante (known to Hypnos customers for Humus on Evan Bartholomew's Somnia label), Enrico Coniglio (Aqua Dorsa project collaborator with Oophoi for the album Cloudlands, he also released Sea Cathedrals solo on Silentes), and Elisa Marzorati.

They've created a beautiful and compelling combination of delicate musical structures with "glitch" components and strange, experimental little samples. Always a pleasant, peaceful listen, Out and About brings a blissed-out classical musicality into connection with an artful edge. This combination of elements results in an especially sensitive, moving set of mood pieces. Somewhere between chamber music and minimalism, between lightness and melancholy, this trio balances elements uncommon in ambient music.

Pre-release review:
"Emanuele Errante, Enrico Coniglio, and Elisa Marzorati have created a wonderful album that moves right to the soul of the listener. While I was familiar with Emanuele Errante, who released the excellent Humus album on Somnia in 2008, the other performers were a mystery to me. Marzorati’s piano motifs, mixed with Coniglio’s multi-faceted contributions involving melodica, harmonica, and treated guitar, all meld beautifully with Errante’s orchestral arrangements."

(Price: $9.99)
Hollan says:
A Distant Light, my debut CD, is the result of a dream that started as a young man, to create music that would capture people's imaginations. While my music is always a deeply personal journey, I derive great joy from sharing it with others. My love of synthesizers and the creative process have inspired me to compose music that transforms my consciousness and feeds my spirit. It is a form of expression, of prayer and meditation, and reflection. The music on A Distant Light was composed between 2007 and 2010 and was mastered by Steve Roach at the Time Room in Arizona. It is with great honor that I share my work and I thank you for listening... (more/buy)
I've Lost - Scáth M'anam (cdr) (Relaxed Machinery category)
(Price: $9.99 cdr)
Scáth M’anam is the first album by I’ve Lost to be released on Relaxed Machinery. Scáth M’anam is a Gaelic phrase, which can be translated as “Shadow of My Soul”. The artist, aka Bobby Jones, chose this title by looking to his Irish roots. He explains the project's motive:

"As a reaction to the unstoppable machine of technological advancements, I composed this album as a means to desperately hold on to, and express, my humanity. The works are the result of an emotional, and subsequently human, response to the world. They are fragile, intimate, personal and genuine."

In keeping with the artist's historical role, Bobby offers the listener an intimate glimpse into his humanity - bringing to light those elements which may be lost, or considered unimportant in the wake of social, economic and political changes resulting from technological “progress”.

Netherworld - Over the Summit (Glacial Movements category)
(Price: $15.99)
Three years after his first full length CD, Netherworld comes back with this new work titled Over the Summit, in which enclosed memories, feelings, and past experiences, deeply lived during the years and surrounded by an almost deafening silence, can be heard and felt circling vast mountains’ snowy peaks. The underlined aspect is the sensation of peacefulness or contemplation of an uncontaminated and silent nature, wrapped in the winter’s white blanket. For the six tracks composing Over the Summit, the sound emanated by the Aurora Borealis has been embraced and manipulated for a work of art, melting it with ethers of orchestral fragments escaped by the perennial layers of Permafrost.... SKARE - Solstice City (Glacial Movements category)
(Price: $15.99)
An interpretation of a journey through a shifting landscape where the city meets nature. Departing from a distant and foreign shore, the traveler embarks a ship, uncertain of his destination. This prelude, introduced vividly in To the other shore, releases this pilgrim to further explore yet uncharted territories. Leaving all man-made conventions, the second track, Through Wind and Broken Ice takes us where the city imitates nature. Finally, a factory appears in the whiteout; a place where angels are manufactured as presented in the final track, The Snow Angel Factory. The vehicles used by Skare on this journey are field recordings, found sounds and treated and manipulated instruments.... (more/buy)

For Amarok, two years of hard work have been employed using sounds and processed field recordings. After a few seconds from the track beginning we are dipped into an arctic trip which lasts more than an hour and in which tangled weavings in a masterly fashion handled by the Spanish artist appear, develop and dissolve. Gusts of arctic wind, the Amarok’s wheezing breath (Amarok is the name of a gigantic wolf in Inuit mythology) and the sense of loss in the polar night are only some of the sensations that this cryogenic hallucinatory acoustic is able to evoke.... Celer - Salvaged Violets (2CD) (Infraction category)
(Price: $13.99 2CD)
New Celer -- always popular around here!

Statement by Will of Celer: "In February of 2008, Dani and I recorded, mixed, and completed the music for 'Salvaged Violets'. The words came as the subject line of a short poem, sent to me over email, included with an unrelated question. During these weekdays, our working schedules were almost the opposite, but we spoke over email constantly. Until recently, I did not notice how similar this was to our beginnings, sending letters as we were on different sides of the country. With no conceptual idea in mind, and since we were apart for so much time during the weekdays, we decided to begin 'Salvaged Violets', and see what came of it. Every night when I returned home, before sleeping, I would spend time working on the music that Dani had worked on through the afternoon, and had left on the desk. Every afternoon, she would find a different version to work on that I had left, and this continued for some time. When together, we would sip our tea, laugh at silly jokes, cook, watch television, and so on. There was no need for longing while we were together. There was always laughing, pots and pans clanging, or a muttering television. In forming 'Salvaged Violets', we did not mix it in a particular arranged order. It was mixed simply by the order it was first played, compiling many miniature sections rolled into one. In this case, they were rolled into two. Nothing was discarded, nothing was rearranged. As the sound changed over time, the original form did not. When it was finally complete, we listened together, for the first time. I remember how familiar it seemed, yet I also felt that so much of it was unknown, and undefined. More than a year later, in September of 2009, I revisited the recordings for the first time since 2008. At this time, it was being mastered by our good friend Corey Fuller, so I was still listening to the original. Riding my bike through the endless suburban subdivisions, through the busy downtown streets, I listened repeatedly, for days, over and over. Something was familiar, but so much I was unable to recall, and yet I was able to relate. I returned home, put my bike against the door, and took my headphones off. There, in the still silence, I think I understood finally what it was about." ... (more/buy)
Capricornus - Halation (Infraction category)
(Price: $11.99)
Some nice new minimalist stuff from Infraction. Reviewed by Alan Lockett for furthernoise.org:
"Halation gives off a flat-on-back eyes-to-skies drowsy air with its long drawn out tone-rays. Highly amorphous in strategy, a purist ambient Enovian ethos a la Thursday Afternoon may suggest itself. On occasion, clusters of notes flicker within the freefloating drone, mirroring the eponymous halation effect - transient morning brume, or light refracted through water vapour rendered blurred."

Ray Carl Daye - Echoes from the Aether (Miscellaneous category)

Like the Earth's upper atmosphere, the music is pure, floating, weightless, frictionless - both static and slowly evolving.

3. Meridian Wave 11:20
4. The Light Between 12:42

"I really enjoy discovering new music, finding something that I've never heard before that connects with me in a new and interesting way. One of my favorite finds so far this year has been "Echoes from the Aether" by Ray Carl Daye, an impressive release featuring four sublimely beautiful drifting ambient tracks that have stayed in pretty much constant rotation in my player over the last few weeks. Beginning with the title track a warm and soothing mood is set, music perfect for Sunday morning listening before the day begins. High end melodies paired with lower tones play atop slowly drifting pads, while vaguely watery sounds and occasional snippets of melody float by. It's a really relaxing track, ideal for closing one's eyes and drifting. "A Fragile Shift" follows, equally beautiful and engaging with light tones bending and stretching through a bed of subtle sounds. The track ebbs and flows in slowly drifting waves, with every sound delicate and nuanced, beautifully minimal. "Meridian Wave" is up next pairing bright tones with low bass drones. It's a quiet piece where things happen slowly but purposefully and sounds slowly rotate around a centre of stillness, a very nice example of the beauty of simplicity. "The Light Between" closes the disc with a bright and warm pad-based track that flows with rich textures and layers, drifting from space to space, bringing to mind images of comfort and safety. A slight melody is there if you look for it but if you'd rather you can just let the tones flow around you and be enveloped by the soundscape created over the course of its length. To say that I enjoy "Echoes from the Aether" is a bit of an understatement. I'm moved by it's beauty, and as I continue to listen to it I find myself discovering more and more depth and sophistication in the music. Ray Carl Daye displays an impressive talent that I'm quite moved by and I look forward to seeing where his work takes me in the future."

SantAAgostino - Operazione Paura (Greytone category)
(Price: $12.99)
Digipak. "Operazione Paura is a total turning not just for the band but for dark, ambient music and noise, generally speaking. That's because santAAgostino is like a meteor crashed onto the Earth disarranging all the balances, rhythmes and cycles. After the crash the planet seems to be perished but, in the inner part, the new fire of life is burning. A brand new energy developed in a new way of living, of thinking and being. Operazine Paura speaks of the filmic and horrorific fear, mind trap to kill atavistic thoughts and all those mental factors that trapped the man into a selfmade cage in his own mind, through the mind itself. Operazione Paura is an awl that, slowly but inexorably, drives the listener to a dimension where there is no thought, no images, no more conceptualizing, nothing still exhists: there is just a huge solitary desert now, where sounds spontaneously flow creating new monster beyond space and time. It's a place where new divine dynasties born, spreading their seed, in order to bear a brand new reign far from the borders that we can't even imagine." From Greytone Records... (more/buy)

Subjects and dynamics less showy, blurred, but not consequently less interesting or worth caring. Seren Ffordd - Arhythmia (Ltd CDR) Seren Ffordd - Arhythmia (Ltd CDR) (Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $9.99, ltd cdr)
Reissue of out of print 2005 recording by Seren Ffordd, an ambient artist residing in Wales. This is the second in our series of reissues by this artist, following Stellar Nurseries, and we previously released his album Veils, Shadows on Hypnos Secret Sounds a few years earlier. Arhythmia is hypnotic and at times restful, yet often has an "edge" or a discordant quality. It's more "active" than most other Seren Ffordd music

Cycles, patterns and rhythms, the world is full of them. Not the steady beats prevalent in most music, but subtle interlocking rhythms that dance and move through each other. The flow between the monthly phases of the moon and the daily tides. Stellar precession and the turning of galaxies. The pulsations of our blodd, neurons and breathing. In five parts, Arhythmia is an exploration of such shifting patterns that can be heard and felt but not danced to. Rhythms and movements of sound that draw the mind and spirit into other places of dreaming. Arhythmia is a mixture of light and dark textures that contain both flowing and hypnotic elements. All the sound sources on the CD are acoustic in origin. They include field recordings of Thunder, rain and other things. The rest of the music is created on singing bowls, voice, gourds and chimes. All the effects and sound manipulations are performed on a Korg D16 digital portastudio. Recorded in June and July 2005.

"Interestingly with a title like Arhythmia, the artwork on the front of this one looks much like the inside of a heart valve, albeit softened in both texture and color. As for the music, hopefully it won't give you any cardiac trouble. Darker and more experimental than his other discs, here Benford takes us into what he calls 'an exploration of rhythms that can be heard and felt but not danced to.' Rumbling and churning sounds are joined by a steady rain in the background. Benford notes that the music is divided into five parts, although it plays as a single track... Arhythmia is daring adventurous fun."

Mystified - Primal Mystification (Ltd CDR) Mystified - Primal Mystification (Ltd CDR) (Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $9.99, ltd cdr)
Mystified is a pseudonym for Thomas Park, an ambient/electronic musician who lives in the midwestern USA. He's been prolific under the Mystified name as well as the Mister Vapor project, but this is his first release with Hypnos Secret Sounds. Most recently, Mystified has collaborated with Nunc Stans on a release "One Thousand Dreams" on the Dataobscura label, and he has previously collaborated with Robin Storey (Rapoon) and Nigel Ayers (Nocturnal Emissions).

One of the things we enjoy at Hypnos is helping expose listeners to artists they may not have heard before, and that includes even artists whose work has been released widely on a variety of labels. The work of Mystified, while elsewhere working with more pronounced electronic rhythms, here emphasizes deep, slow-moving textures. Primal Mystification includes subtle and restrained percussive elements but is definite geared toward the listener who loves deep, thick drone work.

Mystified himself says of this recording:
"Primal Mystification emerged from drone sounds, similar to the way we humans emerged from the primordial ooze. Oscillating ambient bell washes were created using field recordings and mystical effect processes, and then simple rhythmic and melodic phrases evolved from the primal material. Sometimes there is a change or development in the rhythmic material, and always there are changes in the drones, behind, as they shift and flow. Primal Mystification is a musical union of form and formlessness."

(Price: $10.99)
2009. Viridian Sun is a duo focusing on abstract improvisation, featuring Hypnos founder Mike Griffin, and Hypnos solo artist David Tollefson. Their last studio album Perihelion was released a full decade ago on Hypnos, though VS continued to record together and occasionally perform live. The new album Infinite In All Directions moves into slightly different sonic material, downplaying synthesizer electronics in favor of guitar and bass guitar, electronically treated and looped. The result combines sustained, blissful drones, along with occasionally strange, complex overlapping loops.

Many Hypnos listeners have asked over the years when we'll release something new by Viridian Sun, and we now present an album that may be their best yet: Infinite In All Directions.

Vir Unis - The Winter Ghost (CDR-EP) (AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $11.99 cdr-EP)
2009. 38 minute EP-length release.

From the darkest depths of a winter yet to come, AtmoWorks presents the latest release from owner and founder Vir Unis, "The Winter Ghost".

Created in the vein of 2007's "Return of the Locust Queen", "The Winter Ghost" is a single 38 minute track made up of several distinct parts. From the frozen drones of the opening bars, to angelic voices and detuned piped organs - each individual section blends seamlessly into the next creating an ever-shifting, ever-changing wall of sound.

John describes this piece as a self-reflective journey into the long thoughts that haunt the self in this darkest of seasons. It is an expose into the depth of winter, and the isolation that often accompanies it. Listening, it is easy to imagine St. John of the Cross' Dark Night of the Soul, where spiritual loneliness and desolation take hold.

Steve Brand - She Covers the Sky (CDR) (AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $12.99 cdr)
2009. New release from Atmoworks, of which they say:

Once again, Steve Brand emerges from his Mac-based musical cocoon to bring us more of his singular art! AtmoWorks is thrilled to bring you "She Covers the Sky", Steve's 5th solo release since the rebirth of the label, and his 9th overall release with us since mid-2008. Steve had this to say about his latest work.

"Early in 2009, I had a recurring idea to make music that was dedicated to honoring the return to Earth of the divine feminine, or goddess energy. Female energy. When I have ideas that keep coming up over and over, as this one did, I never over-analyze them, as they find a way to come to life one way or another.

Central to the idea of the return of the divine feminine, is the idea that about 10,000 years ago there was a shift from matriarchal societies to patriarchal societies. Some say that this shift of emphasis was due to abuses of power during the more matriarchal period, but now the sacred feminine is returning to Earth—not to seize power once again, but to restore balance between the two energies.

This album, whose title refers to the Egyptian sky goddess Nuit or Nut, is characterized by subdued melodies, drifting dreamworld keyboard textures, bells, gongs, voice, and sounds from Mother Earth Herself."

Hands down, Steve Brand is putting out some of the most consistently excellent ambient and atmospheric music on the market today, and "She Covers the Sky" is a spectacular addition to an already outstanding legacy.

The Elf Machine - In Living Stereo & Citizens of the Anthropocene (3 cdr) (AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $22.99 3-cdr)
2009. Two new "separate but together" releases by The Elf Machine.

CITIZENS OF THE ANTHROPOCENE (1cdr)
Taking nearly three years to complete their follow up to the much critically acclaimed album "I/O", the elves finally emerged from the studio with "Citizens of the Anthropocene", the first release in this dual set. This new album takes a journey through the synthetic and over-medicated lives of the current epoch in which we live, the anthropocene. What does it mean to be human and living in this age? All ideologies are political and religion-based and the experience we have in communicating with our political systems is mediated by an entity which was once called journalism and is now a hyper vigilant 24/7 global brain which spews forth bit streams and memes into the collective consciousness which is then consumed and regurgitated as new archetypal forms. What does it mean to live an organic or synthetic life? What is the difference ultimately since all originated from the earth or were produced by organic forms? These were all questions raised by the elves as the explored their inner systems in the dark recesses of their basement studio....

IN LIVING STEREO (2cdrs)
The second release (two discs in itself), which is packaged with "Citizens of the Anthropocene", is "In Living Stereo". This album is a collection of three long excerpts from two different live events by The Elf Machine. The first show was in 2004 and was a live internet event hosted by Vir Unis on AtmoStreams. The second show was in 2008 at Illinois Northwestern University's radio station, 89.3FM WNUR. The set was performed on Phonaut's late Friday night program. The elves delivered some heavy duty glitch/freeform beatscapes late into the night and the show was captured by Phonaut recording directly to CD, so expect high fidelity recordings on "In Living Stereo".

Steve Brand & Disturbed Earth - The First Day Unnamed(cdr) (AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $12.99 cdr)
2009. The fourth installment of collaborative works between two of our most prolific and creative artists - Dean Richards (aka Disturbed Earth) and Steve Brand. On "The First Day Unnamed", Dean and Steve have created a brooding and many-layered longform masterpiece. Steve had this to say about the release.

"This album literally grew out of the parts and pieces of my trilogy collaboration with Dean/Disturbed Earth that came out in late 2008 and early 2009. That said, this is not a continuation or regurgitation of those works. In the previous trilogy, Dean took my sounds and twisted, bent and re-sculpted them with his own sensibilities and processes, adding his own sounds into the mix. With "First Day...," I have re-cycled and re-processed some pieces that Dean created that didn't make it into the original series, ran them through my own processes and internal filters, adding my own sounds (once again) along the way. The title was inspired by the idea that we strive to encage and cordon off the world by being able to label and define nearly everything without and within us. In doing so, we create the "known," when in reality, much remains unknown, because in truth, we have only investigated that which is most comfortable to us. This disk is characterized by deep terrestrial drones and textures, hints of melody, churning subterranean machinery, the occasional calls of weird animals, distant flute, gongs, and voices."

Birds of Tin - Altarwise (New - Diophantine Label category)
(Price: $11.99)
2009. This is the latest release on the interesting (new to us) label discovery, Diophantine Discs, from which we'll soon have other items available. The two lengthy tracks of Altarwise were recorded in late 2004 and remastered earlier this year. The first track is a 30-minute experimental work that gradually moves through a wide range of sounds (echoing chimes, mysterious noises, subdued clanking, drones). The second piece is an epic 46-minute composition of deep ambient/drone music that manages to float freely through the listener\'s imagination while keeping his attention. While many modern day experimental artists have moved on into the computer realm, Birds of Tin has remained true to the experimental sound of tape loops, lo-fi samplers, and collections of unique toy instruments running through small fx boxes. The sound of the work may have become more cohesive and seamless over the years, but the methods have largely remained the same.... (more/buy)

Matt Borghi - The Phantom Light (Ltd CDR) Matt Borghi - The Phantom Light (Ltd CDR) (Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $9.99, ltd cdr)
2009. The Phantom Light is the third release in our Matt Borghi reissue series. Originally issued in an edition of only 30 copies in 2006, this Hypnos Secret Sounds reissue will be the first opportunity for this recording to be heard by most Borghi listeners. The four long pieces exhibit Borghi's characteristic simplicity and restraint.

Matt says: The Phantom Light is a work that’s comprised four compositions with titles derived from some of the most remote lighthouses on the northern Great Lakes.

The works are inspired by sailor’s tales of being adrift on The Great Lakes during storms, and catastrophic weather. Sailors, looking out on the horizon for a sign of life, a light of hope, aimed their ships towards the safety of these phantom lighthouses hoping to get to a safe harbor. Often times these phantom lighthouses just lead to a rocky shoal and a watery death. These “phantom” lights have been a thing of myth for as long as The Great Lakes freshwater seas have been sailed.

In many ways, The Phantom Light is a sequel to Huronic Minor, as Great Lakes lore, and Matt Borghi’s own experiences on The Great Lakes were the creative impetus for this work.

A simple drum beat is forged through the layers of iridescent patterns of electronic waves creating the ultimate dreamscapes in which to lose oneself. Steve Brand/Ishq - Spiritual Science / The Voice from Home (double-cdr) (AtmoWorks category)
(Price: $19.99, double-cdr)
2009. A great new 2-disc collaboration between the recently-prolific Steve Brand, and Ishq (aka Matt Hillier).

AtmoWorks says:
AtmoWorks is thrilled to offer a two disc collaboration between AW veteran Steve Brand and electronic music mainstay Matt Hiller (aka Ishq). Steve had this to say about the releases, and how they found their way into reality.

'I've been an Ishq fan for about 3-4 years now, as well as all the other mutations, Elve, and Colourform. I found his work as part of my complete indulgence in the Ultimae label, when Ishq kept showing up in the "If you like this, you'll like this" area. I bought "Orchid" and was hooked. I immediately loved his delicate atmospheres and unique beats, his intuitive and spiritual approach to music, which really felt like home to me. We share a common belief in the healing nature of sound, which we both weave into our work. At the time, Matt offered several free downloads of loops, so I used a few in a longform piece I was/am working on called, "Pale Blue Orb." I sent Matt a copy and he responded with a very nice email. I decided at that moment, just to ask if we was interested in a collaboration. A few weeks later I was thrilled to receive an entire DVD of unique material in the mail from Cornwall England, and here we are. Effortless and organic.

I considered releasing these as two separate albums, but I really feel that they are companion pieces that augment one another, almost needing to be heard together. These disks are a very nice co-mingling of the Ishq sound and mine own. Probably a bit murkier and darker than Ishq, but you can still very much hear the Ishq-ness within the sounds, along with my own treatments and personal aesthetics. Disk 1, "Spiritual Science" consists of 3 long tracks of vaporous atmospheres and spaces. Disk 2, "The Voice From Home" is longform drifting, lilting, diaphanous soundscape that times in at just over 50 minutes, meant for low-volume repeated play.'

From our perspective, this is simply a brilliant combination of styles and textures - taking the very best of each of these accomplished artists' talents and blending them together into something wholly new and wonderful.

\"Craig Padilla and Skip Murphy have made in this work a kind of space electronic music which turns out to be emotional and enigmatic. Steve Roach - Dynamic Stillness (2CD) (Projekt category)
(Price: $16.99, 2CD)
2009. Great new 2CD release by Steve Roach.

"Dynamic Stillness presents ambient-electronic pioneer Steve Roach in the deep end of the pure atmospheric, rhythmless soundscape genre. Across the 2-CD release, amorphous shifting sonics glide in a phenomenal flow, highly cohesive and yet ever-changing. Dynamic stillness indeed! These eight long-form tracks (140 minutes in all) undulate softly and slowly, radiating light even as darkness hovers along the edges. It’s an album of subtle pieces, more often than not with emphasis on the stillness as opposed to the dynamics. Disc two’s closing Canyon Stillness plays like a dark inversion of Structures From Silence. A cold breeze blows through it all like a black mist. After so much softness it makes for a surprisingly chilling, engaging finish."

Steve Brand - Children of Alcyone (Ltd CDR) Steve Brand - Children of Alcyone (Ltd CDR) (Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr)
2009. The second release by Steve Brand on our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint, Children of Alcyone demonstrates the characteristic otherworldly quality of the artist's best work. Generally quite simple, at times singlemindedly minimal, this work is nonetheless possessed of a depth and complexity that are revealed upon repeated listening. Stretched-out drone structures combine with subtle tribal/ethnic elements to create very effective atmospheres for almost hypnotic relaxation.

Though we're tempted to call Brand one of our favorite "new" artists, in fact he has been active as a recording artist for quite some time, having released many recordings under the name Augur, along with a handful of solo and collaborative works under his own name this past year.

Steve Brand says:
"The inspiring energy for Children of Alcyone was/is the books of Barbara Marciniak. Marciniak's books are said to be channeled information from the Pleiadians, our distant multi-dimensional ancestors from the Pleiades constellation. (Alcyone is the name of the "central sun" of this constellation.) Upon being introduced to these books, I was immediately taken by their wit and irreverence, the nearly unfathomable timeline of events, and their uncanny relevance to things that are currently taking place here on Earth (the first of these books were channeled in the early 90's).

The initial sound sketches for "Children" were begun in September of 2007 in the tidal wave of energy that was Steve Roach's "Into the SoundCurrent" masters' class, and elaborated upon, refined, and re-energized over the intervening 3 years in my own studio. The result is a sometimes murky, sometimes soothing, sometimes phantasmagorical series of excursions through multiple timelines, and myriad possible half lit universes that other versions of ourselves inhabit.

My friend, and frequent collaborator, Jonathan Benham, not only created the art for this disk, but contributed energy and sounds to a couple of tracks with his array of homemade instruments during a series of improvisations between he and myself captured at my studio."

Underjordiska / Spectral Lore (Stellar Auditorium category)
(Price: $14.99)
This split is a collaboration far different from your typical let\'s throw some left-outs from our previous records, make a intro or two and off to the printing plant mentality, instead being a concept split album which should be heard as one, rather than two albums on the same cd. It is a journey from the surface of the sea to the very depths of the ocean, and then back towards the surface again. Each musician undertakes one part of the journey; two compositions over 30 minutes, featuring actual underwater recordings, aquatic drones, unique instruments (from a mandolin to a duduk) and even melodic post rockish moments. There is a continual flow of movement to the music, as the listener, embodied within this audial environment, descents and ascends through the ocean, towards a deepest point that seems to bear a particular significance: but is it the goal, or the journey itself that matters more?... Procer Veneficus - Saltwater & Glassmoon (Stellar Auditorium category)
(Price: $14.99)
Mr. Derek Schultz aka Night of Procer Veneficus has been composing hallucinogenic odes to otherwordly entities, foggy swamps, far away constellations and ash covered mountains since 2004, having unleashed a large catalogue of recordings featuring his unique brand of either black metal, acoustic or organic ambience. Saltwater and Glassmoon is about the depths of the sea, and its sounds illustrate a drowned orchestra performing large, adagio movements from within the deep, dark ocean. According to the words of the man himself, Deep and slow December ambience; kelp forest orchestral reveries filled to the brim with rich Pacific longing. Sempervirens - Dirge of the Dying Year (Stellar Auditorium category)
(Price: $14.99)
Dirge Of The Dying Year uncovers eight realms filled with unfettered beauty and pure thought, eight worlds stretching out as the eight fatal directions of the compass, all engulfed under an insatiable fog. Somewhere between Biosphere\'s Substrata, Northaunt\'s Barren Land and the early recordings of Brian Eno, Dirge... is the last and most mature recording of the Sempervirens catalogue, and a promise to far greater things in the future. Few individuals have mastered the art of soundscaping to a similar degree to the Estonian ambient artist Margus Mets, aka Sempervirens. His, largely unreleased, output of 6 full length albums and numerous other uncompiled material has been an exemplary effort to create soundworlds where boundaries are only set by the imagination of the artist, and where field recordings, deep drones, distant transmissions of some classical music broadcast, or even acoustic guitar breakdowns are found under precise multi-layering , flowing seamlessly as if they were never separate in the first place.... Vidna Obmana - An Opera for Four Fusion Works (4CDs) (Hypnos label)
(Price: $34.99, 4CDs)
It was always our intention to lower the price of Vidna Obmana's An Opera for Four Fusion Works series once the final act was released. Not only have we cut the price on the "Acts 1-4" package from $41.99 to $34.99, we've also slightly reduced the individual disc prices, for those of you who have purchased part of the series, but not all.

For those unfamiliar with this Vidna Obmana "series" release, each "Act" involved a collaboration between Vidna Obmana and a different recording artist, and was released separately. "Act 1" was a single-disc release, but packaged in a 4-CD case designed to hold all four Acts together. Acts 2, 3 and 4 were released in a paper sleeve with a booklet, to be inserted in the Act 1 case (or, of course, they fit into a standard CD case if you prefer not to buy Act 1)...

c.j. mind & man ufo (eXperiment) - Source (faria category)
(Price: $13.99)
2008. If you like music of Steve Roach - you will like this too! The natural beginning of all life on the Earth intertwines with estrangement pressing on the person the incomprehensible power of an external world (space). Too extraneous and severe really to be a monastery of each of us, as if a mourning bed-sheet swallowed light. In this contradiction, someone finds something attractive for search of the external forms not similar to ours, but probably forgets that its house, a family and surrounding close friends as anybody another is important to him. And being behind an understanding side, and remains not untangled ball drawing to only when on it is unique a question exciting you to you by all means (here and now) it is necessary to receive it is unique a right answer. Stay in a womb, a birth, individual search of sense of existence, leaving in the other world. Spring (awakening) before fading in a cold twilight of mature autumn (death). All is marvelously simple. After all the, Nature does not suffer intervention in its nature. When it exists without our presence – flows and sounds absolutely other light. But the Creator comes and by a wave of an invisible conductor's baton twists a surprising pattern on beauty, in which the voice of a far-far star is audible. The teamwork purpose (the present album) consisted, first of all, in desire to grope some integrity of a universe and attempt to find room for this perception in presented on seventy five minutes of a music material. Steve Brand - Because We Were Once Covered In Gold (cdr) (AtmoWorks category)
(Price: $12.99 cdr)
2008. Steve Brand returns with his second AtmoWorks release, following up on the success of "SoulSpiral". His new release, "Because We Were Once Covered In Gold", is a 5-part journey through some of the most moving and subtly-textured ambient to date. Steve had this to say about the new release:
"'Because We Were Once Covered In Gold' was created about the same time as my album, "Bridge to Nowhere," and both were inspired by channeled material I was reading at the time. The gyst of that material is that our natural state is that of masters of a unimaginable number of realms and selves, and that we are in fact, limitless and empowered multidimensional beings, only temporarily encased in flesh and bone. Through the channels, these beings recalled long forgotten civilizations, planets and cultures far grander and creatively rich than ancient Greece or Egypt. I began to get a real sense of the depth of time, of place and of feeling that I wanted to convey and recreate in music. There were times when working on 'Because We Were Once Covered In Gold' that I sat back and listened to what I had done (or what came through me) and thought, 'When did I do that? WHO did that?' Created almost entirely of keyboard textures, only occasionally punctuated with bells and natural sounds, this album is meant to be a key for journeying, rediscovering and connection."

The Winterhouse - Lost (Blue Oasis/DataObscura category)
(Price: $13.99)
Follow-up to the acclaimed debut album on Blue Oasis, Slow Promises, by the combined talents of Robert Davies and Anthony Paul Kerby (The Circular Ruins, Lammergeyer, Nunc Stans). The drone mastery of Davies is overlaid with Kerby's melodic subtlety and sonic creativity in an organic, addictive, and flowing musical narrative. Much of the music has a brooding vastness and grainy density, with scatterings of embedded field recordings and curious sound baubles. These are melancholic stories of loss and isolation, but told with an artist's eye for the beauty of it all. Lost stands as another testament to the power and depth of contemporary ambient music and its ability to open remarkable sonic vistas and meaningful moving landscapes... (more/buy)

On Updrafts, Australian sound artist James McDougall serves up another gorgeous helping of scrambled field recordings, reconstructions, brittle textures, warm mechanisms, environmental rumblings, and a host of minute sonic abstractions and abrasions. The aural canvas is a rich shimmering, and sometimes skittering, collage of our human sound-world. Ripe with details, subtle developments, and underlying ambience, but flowing down unforseen channels like a stream-of-consciousness narrative. Microtonal and minimal, yet often lush and so very human, Updrafts is a welling up of the sonic world surrounding us every day. It is a testament to a world heard ... but not heard. An admirable follow-up release to the earlier Fold.... (more/buy)
Robert Davies - Geography of Memory (Blue Oasis/DataObscura category)
(Price: $13.99)
There is a thread running through all of Davies' work, it can perhaps best be named phantasy. Song titles signify these very visual, phantastic worlds, and the music moves us through them as in a dream. We drift, transfixed, within uncertain landscapes suffused with evolving visions, shadows, and apparitions. The land of faerie, of phantoms, and of the unconscious. Robert's music is founded in this subterranean, subconscious realm, and is grounded with deep drones that gently weave a sombre and mysterious web of enveloping sound through which we return to something more primal, but also to something more magical.... Deepspace - The Glittering Domain (Ltd CDR) Deepspace - The Glittering Domain (Ltd CDR) (Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $9.99, ltd cdr)
2008. Deepspace is a pseudonym for Mirko Ruckels, a German-born ambient/electronic musician who now resides in Brisbane, Australia. His previous releases have been self-released, and The Glittering Domain is his debut on Hypnos Secret Sounds.

We at Hypnos view Deepspace as one of the top up-and-coming ambient music talents of the past few years, and electroambientspace.com agrees, naming him New Artist of the Year for 2007 and saying:
"Mirko Ruckels is a great new talent, a cross between Steve Roach and Stars of the Lid, with a dash of Budd and Eno."

Abstract and definitely "ambient" in nature, The Glittering Domain simultaneously exhibits a strong musical sensibility, with a sound and structure reminiscent of artists such as Vidna Obmana and Numina. Though Hypnos may be best known for unstructured "drone" style recordings, we really enjoy a recording like this one that has more of a tonal basis.

Deepspace described by stillstream.com:
"Lush, exquisite, flawless, refined, striking, beautiful... we could go on and on with adjectives to describe the music of Deepspace. One of our favorite discoveries in the past year, this is an artist to keep a close eye on - and one we encourage all our listeners to visit right away."

Birds of Tin - Rinpoche (Ltd CDR) Birds of Tin - Rinpoche (Ltd CDR) (Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr)
2008. Birds of Tin is a pseudonym for experimental sound artist Brooke Oates. He has previously collaborated with Rapoon and Augur (Steve Brand), and released several solo and collaborative works on a variety of labels, most notably Manifold and Mystery Sea.

We are pleased to announce the first release by Birds of Tin, Rinpoche, on the Hypnos Secret Sounds sub-label. This recording comes from an in-studio live improvisation from 2002, and covers a strange and varied sonic territory. Working in the realm of sound art as much as "music," the artist creates an effect that is hypnotic and at times seemingly psychoactive.

"Birds Of Tin is the one man project of Brooke Oates and there has been no new release since 2004. That perhaps might be right, since the recordings here on 'Rinpoche' were improvised in 2002. Birds Of Tin had releases on Manifold, Solipsism, Mystery Sea and XZF. What Oates does here is pretty much outside the lines of Hypnos: no finely woven tapestries of synthesizers, but a likewise finely woven pattern of all sorts of heavily treated sound objects. Lots of echo and reverb on the tea cups that is. Two pieces, together spanning some seventy-five minutes, whereas one would have been enough. Another difference is the improvisational aspect of the music, also not unlike Hypnos. Birds Of Tin seems to me a man who loves his record collection - don't we all - and particularly records by zoviet*france and to a lesser extent Rapoon. Sometimes things are a bit too haphazard in the way its put together, but then in other moments he proofs to be capable of producing a nice tune. A pair of scissors to splice the tape would be handy though."

Various - Echoes of Polyhymnia Various - Echoes of Polyhymnia (Hypnos label)
(Price: $9.99)
2008. New, special price!
Polyhymnia was one of the Muses of Greek myth, specifically the Muse of sacred hymn. Echoes of Polyhymnia compiles music in ambient and related genres composed and recorded exclusively by women. This genre is so male-dominated generally that we had a lot of fun gathering interesting ambient sounds, including some works that have one foot in ambient territory and another foot in one of several different, related genres. It covers styles and flavors as diverse as ambient, drone, glitch, vocal collage, goth and electronica.

Hypnos manager (and artist) Lena Griffin curated this specially-themed compilation which gathers an assortment of ambient & atmospheric sound works from around the world. This project reveals a totally new angle on ambient music, more diverse and wide-ranging than all previous ambient compilations from Hypnos. Ranging from ethereal to dark to pretty to spooky to melodic, we think this album displays a solidly worthwhile musical and soundscape content beyond just the curiosity and "I've never seen that before" factor of the theme.

"The nine Muses struck up a lifestirring melody. Polyhymnia, nursingmother of the dance, waved her arms and sketched in the air an image of a soundless voice, speaking with hands and moving eyes in a graphic picture of silence full of meaning." --The Dionysiaca of Nonnus

Saul Stokes - Villa Galaxia Saul Stokes - Villa Galaxia (Binary section)
(Price: $12.99)
2008. Always one of the most popular artists on the Hypnos and Binary labels through the years, Saul Stokes is also one we've been very proud to "launch" into the ambient/electronica world, going back to Saul's first album which was also the first album on Hypnos, Washed in Mercury in 1997. The first new work by Saul Stokes on Hypnos/Binary since Fields in 2005, this is certainly one of the most anticipated discs we've released in years.

Saul Stokes says: Stokesí 8th solo album to date, Villa Galaxia is a hyperfusion of sonic exploration seeded in Stokesí seminary music past, while arcing into a completely new genre defining collection of songs. Sans Serif - Tones for LaMonte (Ltd CDR) Sans Serif - Tones for LaMonte (Ltd CDR) (Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr)
2008. Sans Serif is an alter ego of Forrest Fang, the talented multi-instrumentalist and composer whose most recent solo album Gongland was released on Projekt in 2000. He has also collaborated with Carl Weingarten on the album Invisibility released on The Foundry, as well as contributing instrumentally to the works of other artists such as Robert Rich.

Unlike the more traditionally structured and "musical" work Fang releases under his own name, the Sans Serif project is focused on minimalism. This project in particular is a tribute to the influential minimalist composer LaMonte Young, whose work was known for the use of long, sustained tones and alternate tunings.

Tones for LaMonte bridges the two, related worlds of avant-garde classical influence, and modern ambient drone.

Steve Brand - Bridge to Nowhere (Ltd CDR) Steve Brand - Bridge to Nowhere (Ltd CDR) (Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr)
2008. Steve Brand has just recently started releasing music under his own name, after more than 20 releases in the experimental realm under the name "Augur." Now Brand has a number of recordings scheduled for release on Hypnos, and also on the AtmoWorks label, and the first of these is Bridge to Nowhere.

Brand's work has always had a ritualistic element, and sound sources include: medicine drum, udu, rattles, various flutes, bells, conch shell, thumb piano, cora, Indian fiddle, found, natural and handmade objects, voice, field recordings and keyboards. Bridge to Nowhere is a spacious, slow-breathing exploration of a meditative state, and nowhere in Brand's work is the ritualistic element more present than in this case.

Ambient music in general is often considered to be "spacy" or conducive to altered states of consciousness in general, but this music specifically seems exploratory, meditative, and even a bit "druggy" and strange. As fans of this music ourselves, we particularly love it when an artist seems genuinely to have tapped into a reality outside our own -- to have slowed down the world or distorted it, or viewed things through a prism or kaleidoscope. The work of Steve Brand functions in this way, and we're pleased to be able to deliver this incredible, no-side-effects sound trip, to Hypnos listeners!

M. Griffin - Fabrications M. Griffin - Fabrications (Hypnos label)
(Price: $12.99)
2008. Originally announced in 1997 as the follow-up by Hypnos founder Mike Griffin to his debut Sudden Dark, Fabrications has been reworked, abandoned, restarted from scratch, back-burnered, reimagined, and left frozen in carbonite. Among those who have followed Hypnos from the beginning, Fabrications achieved a certain notoriety as the album always promised for release in the coming year, which never quite arrived. 2008 is finally the year in which Fabrications is revealed, perhaps appropriate for the 10-year anniversary of its original planned release date, 1998.

Generally known as an ambient minimalist, utilizing synthesizers for most of his work, this time M. Griffin took advantage of "real world" sounds, captured with binaural microphones using a portable digital audio recorder. For this release, Griffin built up collages of numerous location recording elements, including cars driving on freeways, people walking in long echoing hallways, the ocean waves in Kona at night, a metalworking factory with heavy machinery crunching away, distant trains, and clothes driers. These elements were manipulated, combined, worked-on and re-worked, and overlaid with looped spoken elements later created by Griffin in the studio. The end result comes out something like the Zoviet France soundtrack to a David Lynch film, that is, a dark and dream-like collage of loops, spoken fragments, disembodied whispers, and the echo of far-off machinery...
