Jeff Pearce - Daylight Slowly
(Hypnos section)
(Price: $10.99) 2010 reissue of Pearce's first Hypnos album, out of print since 2002. Many Jeff Pearce listeners
missed this original release, and may have wanted to catch up on this wonderful collection of
early Jeff Pearce guitar ambience. Pearce has moved on to a more direct and musical (as opposed
to ethereal and absctract) direction in recent years, and uses a Chapman Stick now rather than an
electric guitar, so if you miss the earlier work in this style, give this a listen. We even
replaced the old-fashioned Real Audio samples with ultra-modern new MP3 sample clips!
Examples of praise for the first release:
"Best of the year list."
--Eric Meece, KKUP Radio
--Vladimir Jovanovic, Inner Space Radio, Zagreb, Croatia
--Scott Raymond (#1 ranking for the year), WVKR radio
--Chuck VanZyl, Star's End Radio, WXPN, Philadelphia
"Daylight Slowly, his latest solo album, is another deliciously slow,
shimmeringly serene album of processed electric guitar. "
--John Dilberto, Echoes Radio
"The most "romantic" cd of Hypnos Label. Has a strange light and a sensation of time slow-down..."

Mystified - Primal Mystification (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $9.99, ltd cdr) Mystified is a pseudonym for Thomas Park, an ambient/electronic
musician who lives in the midwestern USA. He's been prolific under
the Mystified name as well as the Mister Vapor project, but this is
his first release with Hypnos Secret Sounds. Most recently, Mystified
has collaborated with Nunc Stans on a release "One Thousand
Dreams" on the Dataobscura label, and he has previously collaborated
with Robin Storey (Rapoon) and Nigel Ayers (Nocturnal Emissions).
One of the things we enjoy at Hypnos is helping expose listeners to artists
they may not have heard before, and that includes even artists whose work has been
released widely on a variety of labels. The work of Mystified, while elsewhere
working with more pronounced electronic rhythms, here emphasizes deep, slow-moving
textures. Primal Mystification includes subtle and restrained percussive
elements but is definite geared toward the listener who loves deep, thick drone work.
Mystified himself says of this recording:
"Primal Mystification emerged from drone sounds, similar to the way we humans
emerged from the primordial ooze. Oscillating ambient bell washes were created using
field recordings and mystical effect processes, and then simple rhythmic and melodic
phrases evolved from the primal material. Sometimes there is a change or development
in the rhythmic material, and always there are changes in the drones, behind, as they
shift and flow. Primal Mystification is a musical union of form and formlessness."

Viridian Sun - Infinite In All Directions
(Hypnos section)
(Price: $10.99) 2009. Viridian Sun is a duo focusing on abstract improvisation, featuring Hypnos
founder Mike Griffin, and Hypnos solo artist David Tollefson. Their last studio album Perihelion
was released a full decade ago on Hypnos, though VS continued to record together and occasionally
perform live. The new album Infinite In All Directions moves into slightly different sonic material, downplaying synthesizer
electronics in favor of guitar and bass guitar, electronically treated and looped. The result
combines sustained, blissful drones, along with occasionally strange, complex overlapping loops.
Many Hypnos listeners have asked over the years when we'll release something new by Viridian Sun, and we now
present an album that may be their best yet: Infinite In All Directions.

Resonant Drift - The Call
(Resonant Drift category)
(Price: $12.99) 2009. This new one has a beautiful Steve Roach-like flavor, likely due to the duo's recent study with Roach, as
well as his tweaks and mastering of the final recording. Definitely recommended.
"The Call is the new release from the duo of Bill Olien and Gary Johnson, known collectively as Resonant Drift. Combining synthesizers, guitars, percussion, ethnic instruments and field recordings, this deep and organic release explores ambient and atmospheric territory, and boasts expert mastering and sonic enhancements by Steve Roach at his world famous Timeroom studio."

Seren Ffordd - Stellar Nurseries (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $9.99, ltd cdr) 2009. Stellar Nurseries is the first in a series of Seren Ffordd reissues planned to continue over the
coming year or so. These recordings, by an artist whose work is always mysterious and sometimes
ominous, were previously released on the Umbra and Penumbra labels operated (by Hypnos artist Oophoi) out of Italy,
though the artist himself resides in Wales. He first connected with Hypnos on the compilation CD Sounds of a
Universe Overheard, to which he contributed a track, and Hypnos Secret Sounds released his album
Veils, Shadows.
This recording exhibits a pleasing serenity, a great example of the artist's characteristic combination of dark and light
elements into a balanced, deep contrast.

(Price: $9.99)
"Stunning full-length album from Atheus, I have been looking forward to this release ever since the first tentative audio samples appeared via myspace what must be more than twelve months ago now. So here it is, arrived only today and I have played this album through from start to finish three times already, it really is that good. Mysterious, intrusive, threatening ambience, almost drone-like in parts, and sounds totally amazing when adjusted correctly and played very, very loud. Thoroughly mesmerising, I can whole-heartedly say this is one of the most outstanding albums of year and certainly in my top three! Breathtaking."

Vir Unis - The Winter Ghost (CDR-EP)
(AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $11.99 cdr-EP)
2009. 38 minute EP-length release.
From the darkest depths of a winter yet to come, AtmoWorks presents the latest release from owner and founder Vir Unis, "The Winter Ghost".
Created in the vein of 2007's "Return of the Locust Queen", "The Winter Ghost" is a single 38 minute track made up of several distinct parts. From the frozen drones of the opening bars, to angelic voices and detuned piped organs - each individual section blends seamlessly into the next creating an ever-shifting, ever-changing wall of sound.
John describes this piece as a self-reflective journey into the long thoughts that haunt the self in this darkest of seasons. It is an expose into the depth of winter, and the isolation that often accompanies it. Listening, it is easy to imagine St. John of the Cross' Dark Night of the Soul, where spiritual loneliness and desolation take hold.

Steve Brand - She Covers the Sky (CDR)
(AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $12.99 cdr) 2009. New release from Atmoworks, of which they say:
Once again, Steve Brand emerges from his Mac-based musical cocoon to bring us more of his singular art! AtmoWorks is thrilled to bring you "She Covers the Sky", Steve's 5th solo release since the rebirth of the label, and his 9th overall release with us since mid-2008. Steve had this to say about his latest work.
"Early in 2009, I had a recurring idea to make music that was dedicated to honoring the return to Earth of the divine feminine, or goddess energy. Female energy. When I have ideas that keep coming up over and over, as this one did, I never over-analyze them, as they find a way to come to life one way or another.
Central to the idea of the return of the divine feminine, is the idea that about 10,000 years ago there was a shift from matriarchal societies to patriarchal societies. Some say that this shift of emphasis was due to abuses of power during the more matriarchal period, but now the sacred feminine is returning to Earthnot to seize power once again, but to restore balance between the two energies.
This album, whose title refers to the Egyptian sky goddess Nuit or Nut, is characterized by subdued melodies, drifting dreamworld keyboard textures, bells, gongs, voice, and sounds from Mother Earth Herself."
Hands down, Steve Brand is putting out some of the most consistently excellent ambient and atmospheric music on the market today, and "She Covers the Sky" is a spectacular addition to an already outstanding legacy.

The Elf Machine - In Living Stereo & Citizens of the Anthropocene (3 cdr)
(AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $22.99 3-cdr) 2009. Two new "separate but together" releases by The Elf Machine.
CITIZENS OF THE ANTHROPOCENE (1cdr)
Taking nearly three years to complete their follow up to the much critically acclaimed album "I/O", the elves finally emerged from the studio with "Citizens of the Anthropocene", the first release in this dual set. This new album takes a journey through the synthetic and over-medicated lives of the current epoch in which we live, the anthropocene. What does it mean to be human and living in this age? All ideologies are political and religion-based and the experience we have in communicating with our political systems is mediated by an entity which was once called journalism and is now a hyper vigilant 24/7 global brain which spews forth bit streams and memes into the collective consciousness which is then consumed and regurgitated as new archetypal forms. What does it mean to live an organic or synthetic life? What is the difference ultimately since all originated from the earth or were produced by organic forms? These were all questions raised by the elves as the explored their inner systems in the dark recesses of their basement studio....
IN LIVING STEREO (2cdrs)
The second release (two discs in itself), which is packaged with "Citizens of the Anthropocene", is "In Living Stereo". This album is a collection of three long excerpts from two different live events by The Elf Machine. The first show was in 2004 and was a live internet event hosted by Vir Unis on AtmoStreams. The second show was in 2008 at Illinois Northwestern University's radio station, 89.3FM WNUR. The set was performed on Phonaut's late Friday night program. The elves delivered some heavy duty glitch/freeform beatscapes late into the night and the show was captured by Phonaut recording directly to CD, so expect high fidelity recordings on "In Living Stereo".

Steve Brand & Disturbed Earth - The First Day Unnamed(cdr)
(AtmoWorks label)
(Price: $12.99 cdr)
2009. The fourth installment of collaborative works between two of our most prolific and creative artists - Dean Richards (aka Disturbed Earth) and Steve Brand. On "The First Day Unnamed", Dean and Steve have created a brooding and many-layered longform masterpiece. Steve had this to say about the release.
"This album literally grew out of the parts and pieces of my trilogy collaboration with Dean/Disturbed Earth that came out in late 2008 and early 2009. That said, this is not a continuation or regurgitation of those works. In the previous trilogy, Dean took my sounds and twisted, bent and re-sculpted them with his own sensibilities and processes, adding his own sounds into the mix. With "First Day...," I have re-cycled and re-processed some pieces that Dean created that didn't make it into the original series, ran them through my own processes and internal filters, adding my own sounds (once again) along the way.
The title was inspired by the idea that we strive to encage and cordon off the world by being able to label and define nearly everything without and within us. In doing so, we create the "known," when in reality, much remains unknown, because in truth, we have only investigated that which is most comfortable to us. This disk is characterized by deep terrestrial drones and textures, hints of melody, churning subterranean machinery, the occasional calls of weird animals, distant flute, gongs, and voices."

Birds of Tin - Altarwise
(New - Diophantine Label category)
(Price: $11.99) 2009. This is the latest release on the interesting (new to us) label discovery, Diophantine Discs, from which
we'll soon have other items available. The two lengthy tracks of Altarwise were recorded in late 2004 and remastered earlier this year. The first track is a 30-minute experimental work that gradually moves through a wide range of sounds (echoing chimes, mysterious noises, subdued clanking, drones). The second piece is an epic 46-minute composition of deep ambient/drone music that manages to float freely through the listener\'s imagination while keeping his attention.
While many modern day experimental artists have moved on into the computer realm, Birds of Tin has remained true to the experimental sound of tape loops, lo-fi samplers, and collections of unique toy instruments running through small fx boxes. The sound of the work may have become more cohesive and seamless over the years, but the methods have largely remained the same....

Eidvlon - Idolatriae
(malignant category)
(Price: $13.99) 7 tracks of ultra bleak, abstract atmospheres, with sounds and textures that seem to seep from catacomb walls and come slithering out of subterranean chambers. Certainly, this can be classified as a dark ambient record, but at itās core, itās more than just that simple classification. Thereās a gritty, more jagged edge here, with tetonic shifts, deep rumblings, and crackling, climatic squalls buried under a bed of ghostly reverb and haunting tonal resonance...

Matt Borghi - The Phantom Light (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $9.99, ltd cdr) 2009. The Phantom Light is the third release in our Matt Borghi reissue series. Originally issued in an edition of only 30 copies in 2006,
this Hypnos Secret Sounds reissue will be the first opportunity for this recording to be heard by most Borghi listeners. The four long pieces
exhibit Borghi's characteristic simplicity and restraint.
Matt says:
The Phantom Light is a work thats comprised four compositions with titles derived from some of the most remote lighthouses on the northern
Great Lakes.
The works are inspired by sailors tales of being adrift on The Great Lakes during storms, and catastrophic weather. Sailors, looking out on the
horizon for a sign of life, a light of hope, aimed their ships towards the safety of these phantom lighthouses hoping to get to a safe harbor. Often
times these phantom lighthouses just lead to a rocky shoal and a watery death. These phantom lights have been a thing of myth for as long as The
Great Lakes freshwater seas have been sailed.
In many ways, The Phantom Light is a sequel to Huronic Minor, as Great Lakes lore, and Matt Borghis own experiences on The Great Lakes
were the creative impetus for this work.

Steve Brand/Ishq - Spiritual Science / The Voice from Home (double-cdr)
(AtmoWorks category)
(Price: $19.99, double-cdr) 2009. A great new 2-disc collaboration between the recently-prolific
Steve Brand, and Ishq (aka Matt Hillier).
AtmoWorks says:
AtmoWorks is thrilled to offer a two disc collaboration between AW veteran Steve Brand and electronic music mainstay Matt Hiller (aka Ishq).
Steve had this to say about the releases, and how they found their way into reality.
'I've been an Ishq fan for about 3-4 years now, as well as all the other mutations, Elve, and Colourform. I found his work as part of my
complete indulgence in the Ultimae label, when Ishq kept showing up in the "If you like this, you'll like this" area. I bought "Orchid" and was
hooked. I immediately loved his delicate atmospheres and unique beats, his intuitive and spiritual approach to music, which really felt like
home to me. We share a common belief in the healing nature of sound, which we both weave into our work. At the time, Matt offered several
free downloads of loops, so I used a few in a longform piece I was/am working on called, "Pale Blue Orb." I sent Matt a copy and he responded
with a very nice email. I decided at that moment, just to ask if we was interested in a collaboration. A few weeks later I was thrilled to receive an
entire DVD of unique material in the mail from Cornwall England, and here we are. Effortless and organic.
I considered releasing these as two separate albums, but I really feel that they are companion pieces that augment one another, almost needing
to be heard together. These disks are a very nice co-mingling of the Ishq sound and mine own. Probably a bit murkier and darker than Ishq, but
you can still very much hear the Ishq-ness within the sounds, along with my own treatments and personal aesthetics. Disk 1, "Spiritual Science"
consists of 3 long tracks of vaporous atmospheres and spaces. Disk 2, "The Voice From Home" is longform drifting, lilting, diaphanous
soundscape that times in at just over 50 minutes, meant for low-volume repeated play.'
From our perspective, this is simply a brilliant combination of styles and textures - taking the very best of each of these accomplished artists'
talents and blending them together into something wholly new and wonderful.

The tracks are named simply Part 1 through 7 which is a tradition of sorts for EM records. Create - In the Blink of an Eye
(groove category)
(Price: $13.99) \"Peaceful electronics are laced with gutsier enhancements. Fundamental drones serve as an ethereal substructure for more demonstrative melodics. Surging loops emerge to season the flow with vigorous locomotion. An astral density is achieved and then bolstered by additional layers of nimble-fingered keyboard patterns. Fanciful diversions appear with regularity, keeping the music entertaining and lively. The electronics resound with deep intonations, delivering an oomph that is never murky. Meanwhile, this heaviness is countered by the resolute presence of more fanciful pitches that provide a pleasant propulsion. The union of these elements establishes a rich panorama that is flavored with glittering cosmic augmentations. While most of the tracks feature no percussion, the cyclic application of strident sounds provides a suitable rhythmic presence. In one piece, the faux rhythms achieve a startling vitality; while in another song, softly chugging beats establish an amiable tempo. These compositions employ a slow-building structure, starting out as tenuous harmonics which steadily evolve into pastiches of zealous vitality. A sense of growth is accomplished through the constant expansion of melodies, yet the music rarely has any urgency, with each escalation flowing naturally and unhurried. A strong air of expectancy is generated as the intertwining riffs compound into thrilling configurations that shimmer with puissance and optimism.\"

(groove category)
(Price: $13.99) \"Those who love rather complex and dynamic sequencer music with an acoustic edge and an occasional high-tech feel should check out the music Paul Ellis\' has put down on his amazing album Last Hiding Place of Beauty. The cd contains four long tracks, all making a powerful, straightforward statement, keenly melting vibrating sequencer patterns, fx\'s, and a wide range of vintage flavored synthesizer textures such as Mellotron flute. As said previously, the overall structure is rather complex, although lots of space is found within the core of every piece of music. The great interplay between bass grooves, drums, electronic and acoustic instruments is quite mind blowing, especially on the 16-minute title track. The overall outcome is simply breathing the joy of honest electronics more than once.\"

Steve Roach - Dynamic Stillness (2CD)
(Projekt category)
(Price: $16.99, 2CD) 2009. Great new 2CD release by Steve Roach.
"Dynamic Stillness presents ambient-electronic pioneer Steve Roach in the deep end of the pure atmospheric, rhythmless soundscape genre. Across the 2-CD release, amorphous shifting sonics glide in a phenomenal flow, highly cohesive and yet ever-changing. Dynamic stillness indeed! These eight long-form tracks (140 minutes in all) undulate softly and slowly, radiating light even as darkness hovers along the edges. Itās an album of subtle pieces, more often than not with emphasis on the stillness as opposed to the dynamics. Disc twoās closing Canyon Stillness plays like a dark inversion of Structures From Silence. A cold breeze blows through it all like a black mist. After so much softness it makes for a surprisingly chilling, engaging finish."

"on 'flameless lantern', ms. pixy once again whisks her listeners away from things that are normal, to a plane of unknowns. the album begins with a sugar-laced dip into a honey pot with a thick dose of shoegazer. from there, it's a shift into curious dark deeds, unnatural tales of delight and highly magnified introspection. the tones roll softly into the mind, but one must be aware that some of them are sweetly poisoned. as the artist would tell you herself, she doesn't consider this an album, but rather dreams and forgotten thoughts translated into sound"

Steve Brand - Children of Alcyone (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr) 2009. The second release by Steve Brand on our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint, Children of Alcyone
demonstrates the characteristic otherworldly quality of the artist's best work. Generally quite simple, at times
singlemindedly minimal, this work is nonetheless possessed of a depth and complexity that are revealed upon
repeated listening. Stretched-out drone structures combine with subtle tribal/ethnic elements to create very
effective atmospheres for almost hypnotic relaxation.
Though we're tempted to call Brand one of our favorite "new" artists, in fact he has been
active as a recording artist for quite some time, having released many recordings under the name Augur, along
with a handful of solo and collaborative works under his own name this past year.
Steve Brand says:
"The inspiring energy for Children of Alcyone was/is the books of Barbara Marciniak. Marciniak's books are said to be channeled information from the
Pleiadians, our distant multi-dimensional ancestors from the Pleiades constellation. (Alcyone is the name of the "central sun" of this constellation.) Upon being
introduced to these books, I was immediately taken by their wit and irreverence, the nearly unfathomable timeline of events, and their uncanny relevance to
things that are currently taking place here on Earth (the first of these books were channeled in the early 90's).
The initial sound sketches for "Children" were begun in September of 2007 in the tidal wave of energy that was Steve Roach's "Into the SoundCurrent" masters'
class, and elaborated upon, refined, and re-energized over the intervening 3 years in my own studio. The result is a sometimes murky, sometimes soothing,
sometimes phantasmagorical series of excursions through multiple timelines, and myriad possible half lit universes that other versions of ourselves inhabit.
My friend, and frequent collaborator, Jonathan Benham, not only created the art for this disk, but contributed energy and sounds to a couple of tracks with
his array of homemade instruments during a series of improvisations between he and myself captured at my studio."

Each musician undertakes one part of the journey; two compositions over 30 minutes, featuring actual underwater recordings, aquatic drones, unique instruments (from a mandolin to a duduk) and even melodic post rockish moments. There is a continual flow of movement to the music, as the listener, embodied within this audial environment, descents and ascends through the ocean, towards a deepest point that seems to bear a particular significance: but is it the goal, or the journey itself that matters more? \"

Procer Veneficus - Saltwater & Glassmoon
(Stellar Auditorium category)
(Price: $14.99) \"Mr. Derek Schultz aka Night of Procer Veneficus has been composing hallucinogenic odes to otherwordly entities, foggy swamps, far away constellations and ash covered mountains since 2004, having unleashed a large catalogue of recordings featuring his unique brand of either black metal, acoustic or organic ambience. Saltwater and Glassmoon is about the depths of the sea, and its sounds illustrate a drowned orchestra performing large, adagio movements from within the deep, dark ocean. According to the words of the man himself, Deep and slow December ambience; kelp forest orchestral reveries filled to the brim with rich Pacific longing. Midnight moonlight music for crystalline blue air and silver oceanic melodies waning into sleep, slipping softly over the continental shelf into the enveloping refuge of abyssal silence.\"

Sempervirens - Dirge of the Dying Year
(Stellar Auditorium category)
(Price: $14.99) \"Dirge Of The Dying Year uncovers eight realms filled with unfettered beauty and pure thought, eight worlds stretching out as the eight fatal directions of the compass, all engulfed under an insatiable fog. Somewhere between Biosphere\'s Substrata, Northaunt\'s Barren Land and the early recordings of Brian Eno, Dirge... is the last and most mature recording of the Sempervirens catalogue, and a promise to far greater things in the future. Few individuals have mastered the art of soundscaping to a similar degree to the Estonian ambient artist Margus Mets, aka Sempervirens. His, largely unreleased, output of 6 full length albums and numerous other uncompiled material has been an exemplary effort to create soundworlds where boundaries are only set by the imagination of the artist, and where field recordings, deep drones, distant transmissions of some classical music broadcast, or even acoustic guitar breakdowns are found under precise multi-layering , flowing seamlessly as if they were never separate in the first place.\"

Vidna Obmana - An Opera for Four Fusion Works (4CDs)
(Hypnos label)
(Price: $34.99, 4CDs) It was always our intention to lower the price of Vidna Obmana's An Opera for Four Fusion Works series once
the final act was released. Not only have we cut the price on the "Acts 1-4" package from $41.99 to $34.99, we've also
slightly reduced the individual disc prices, for those of you who have purchased part of the series, but not all.
For those unfamiliar with this Vidna Obmana "series" release, each "Act" involved a collaboration between Vidna Obmana
and a different recording artist, and was released separately. "Act 1" was a single-disc release, but packaged in a 4-CD
case designed to hold all four Acts together. Acts 2, 3 and 4 were released in a paper sleeve with a booklet, to be inserted
in the Act 1 case (or, of course, they fit into a standard CD case if you prefer not to buy Act 1)...
Act 1 featuring Dreams in Exile, $10.99 (more/buy)

c.j. mind & man ufo (eXperiment) - Source
(faria category)
(Price: $13.99) 2008. If you like music of Steve Roach - you will like this too! The natural beginning of all life on the Earth intertwines with
estrangement pressing on the person the incomprehensible power of an external world (space). Too extraneous and severe really to be a
monastery of each of us, as if a mourning bed-sheet swallowed light. In this contradiction, someone finds something attractive for search of the
external forms not similar to ours, but probably forgets that its house, a family and surrounding close friends as anybody another is important to him.
And being behind an understanding side, and remains not untangled ball drawing to only when on it is unique a question exciting you to you by all
means (here and now) it is necessary to receive it is unique a right answer. Stay in a womb, a birth, individual search of sense of existence,
leaving in the other world. Spring (awakening) before fading in a cold twilight of mature autumn (death). All is marvelously simple. After all the,
Nature does not suffer intervention in its nature. When it exists without our presence flows and sounds absolutely other light. But the Creator
comes and by a wave of an invisible conductor's baton twists a surprising pattern on beauty, in which the voice of a far-far star is audible. The
teamwork purpose (the present album) consisted, first of all, in desire to grope some integrity of a universe and attempt to find room for this
perception in presented on seventy five minutes of a music material. Limited edition of 500 pieces, FAR-24...

Faryus - Night Forest Reality
(faria category)
(Price: $13.99) 2008. Night Forest Reality describes a world which does not exist in daylight, arising when the last dying beam of sunshine fades from dark shaggy branches of old trees, when air becomes damp and hearing sharpens. A constant feeling of someone\'s presence borders the periphery. From the impenetrable darkness in the heart of the wood, a cool wind forces leaves to tremble, hardly distinguishable in the twilight. It only imparts its vibration and a touch of cold air to the face, a suggestion of swaying branches, sparkling streams and the rustle of revived grass. Dew drops barely sparkle in the gloom, reflecting the stars blinking in bottomless moonless depth. The night wood, frightening and attracting, living an invisible life, populated by unfamiliar ancient beings. Almost nothing visible in the impenetrable darkness, but exposing its mysteries via sounds of the unseen, of that which should not be seen....

Steve Brand - Because We Were Once Covered In Gold (cdr)
(AtmoWorks category)
(Price: $12.99 cdr) 2008. Steve Brand returns with his second AtmoWorks release, following up on the success of "SoulSpiral". His new release, "Because We Were Once Covered In Gold", is a 5-part journey through some of the most moving and subtly-textured ambient to date. Steve had this to say about the new release:
"'Because We Were Once Covered In Gold' was created about the same time as my album, "Bridge to Nowhere," and both were inspired by channeled material I was reading at the time. The
gyst of that material is that our natural state is that of masters of a unimaginable number of realms and selves, and that we are in fact, limitless and empowered multidimensional beings, only
temporarily encased in flesh and bone. Through the channels, these beings recalled long forgotten civilizations, planets and cultures far grander and creatively rich than ancient Greece or
Egypt. I began to get a real sense of the depth of time, of place and of feeling that I wanted to convey and recreate in music. There were times when working on 'Because We Were Once
Covered In Gold' that I sat back and listened to what I had done (or what came through me) and thought, 'When did I do that? WHO did that?' Created almost entirely of keyboard textures,
only occasionally punctuated with bells and natural sounds, this album is meant to be a key for journeying, rediscovering and connection."...

Peter James - Is (cdr)

(Price: $12.99 cdr) 2008. In Peter James words: The original idea behind the recording of 'is' was to create an album using only very limited instrumentation, mainly bass guitar,
and electric guitar -- no synthesisers were used to make this album, only samples and loops made from bass and guitar work I had recorded in my studio. Often I would record an
hours worth of stuff, only to come out of the session with maybe a minutes worth, or less, of useful sounds. It was recorded between june 2007 and july 2008. It wasn't an easy
journey. And that's reflected in the overall tone and feel of the album. it?s also designed to be listened to loud, but it works well quiet, too. I?m not sure if it's 'dark ambient', or 'ambient'
at all. I guess that's not for me to decide. For me - It just 'is'....

The Winterhouse - Lost
(Blue Oasis/DataObscura category)
(Price: $13.99) Follow-up to the acclaimed debut album on Blue Oasis, Slow Promises, by the combined talents of Robert Davies and Anthony Paul Kerby (The Circular Ruins, Lammergeyer, Nunc Stans). The drone mastery of Davies is overlaid with Kerby's melodic subtlety and sonic creativity in an organic, addictive, and flowing musical narrative. Much of the music has a brooding vastness and grainy density, with scatterings of embedded field recordings and curious sound baubles. These are melancholic stories of loss and isolation, but told with an artist's eye for the beauty of it all.
Lost stands as another testament to the power and depth of contemporary ambient music and its ability to open remarkable sonic vistas and meaningful moving landscapes...

Ripe with details, subtle developments, and underlying ambience, but flowing down unforseen channels like a stream-of-consciousness narrative. Song titles signify these very visual, phantastic worlds, and the music moves us through them as in a dream. We drift, transfixed, within uncertain landscapes suffused with evolving visions, shadows, and apparitions. The land of faerie, of phantoms, and of the unconscious. Robert's music is founded in this subterranean, subconscious realm, and is grounded with deep drones that gently weave a sombre and mysterious web of enveloping sound through which we return to something more primal, but also to something more magical....

Deepspace - The Glittering Domain (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $9.99, ltd cdr) 2008. Deepspace is a pseudonym for Mirko Ruckels, a
German-born ambient/electronic musician who now resides in
Brisbane, Australia. His previous releases have been
self-released, and The Glittering Domain is his
debut on Hypnos Secret Sounds.
We at Hypnos view Deepspace as one of the
top up-and-coming ambient music talents of the past few
years, and electroambientspace.com agrees,
naming him New Artist of the Year for 2007 and saying:
"Mirko Ruckels is a great new talent, a cross between
Steve Roach and Stars of the Lid, with a dash of Budd
and Eno."
Abstract and definitely "ambient" in nature, The
Glittering Domain simultaneously exhibits a strong
musical sensibility, with a sound and structure reminiscent
of artists such as Vidna Obmana and Numina. Though Hypnos
may be best known for unstructured "drone" style recordings,
we really enjoy a recording like this one that has more
of a tonal basis.
Deepspace described by stillstream.com:
"Lush, exquisite, flawless, refined, striking, beautiful...
we could go on and on with adjectives to describe the
music of Deepspace. One of our favorite discoveries in

Birds of Tin - Rinpoche (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr) 2008. Birds of Tin is a pseudonym for experimental sound artist Brooke Oates. He has previously collaborated with
Rapoon and Augur (Steve Brand), and released several solo and collaborative works on a variety of labels,
most notably Manifold and Mystery Sea.
We are pleased to announce the first release by Birds of Tin, Rinpoche, on the Hypnos Secret Sounds sub-label. This
recording comes from an in-studio live improvisation from 2002, and covers a strange and varied sonic territory. Working in the
realm of sound art as much as "music," the artist creates an effect that is hypnotic and at times seemingly psychoactive.
"Birds Of Tin is the one man project of Brooke Oates and there has been no new release since 2004. That perhaps might be right,
since the recordings here on 'Rinpoche' were improvised in 2002. Birds Of Tin had releases on Manifold, Solipsism, Mystery Sea and
XZF. What Oates does here is pretty much outside the lines of Hypnos: no finely woven tapestries of synthesizers, but a likewise finely
woven pattern of all sorts of heavily treated sound objects. Lots of echo and reverb on the tea cups that is. Two pieces, together spanning
some seventy-five minutes, whereas one would have been enough. Another difference is the improvisational aspect of the music, also not
unlike Hypnos. Birds Of Tin seems to me a man who loves his record collection - don't we all - and particularly records by zoviet*france
and to a lesser extent Rapoon. Sometimes things are a bit too haphazard in the way its put together, but then in other moments he proofs to
be capable of producing a nice tune. A pair of scissors to splice the tape would be handy though."

Various - Echoes of Polyhymnia
(Hypnos label)
(Price: $12.99) 2008.
Polyhymnia was one of the Muses of Greek myth, specifically the Muse of sacred hymn. Echoes of Polyhymnia compiles
music in ambient and related genres composed and recorded exclusively by women.
This genre is so male-dominated generally that we had a lot of fun gathering interesting ambient sounds, including some
works that have one foot in ambient territory and another foot in one of several different, related genres. It covers styles and
flavors as diverse as ambient, drone, glitch, vocal collage, goth and electronica.
Hypnos manager (and artist) Lena Griffin curated this specially-themed compilation which gathers an assortment of ambient &
atmospheric sound works from around the world. This project reveals a totally new angle on ambient music, more diverse and
wide-ranging than all previous ambient compilations from Hypnos. Ranging from ethereal to dark to pretty to spooky to melodic,
we think this album displays a solidly worthwhile musical and soundscape content beyond just the curiosity and "I've never
seen that before" factor of the theme.
"The nine Muses struck up a lifestirring melody. Polyhymnia, nursingmother of the dance, waved her arms and sketched in the
air an image of a soundless voice, speaking with hands and moving eyes in a graphic picture of silence full of meaning."

(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr) 2008. Hypnos Secret Sounds reissue of an out-of-print early
release on Fleury-Steiner's own Gears of Sand label. Drifts
is a nice set of electronic ambient tracks combining different
repeating loops which overlap at different rates, falling (or
drifting?) in and out of sync with one another, creating ever-changing
organic ambient textures. Mastered by Robert Rich.

REVIEWS:
"Really nice. Reminds me of what I wish Terry Riley were doing today."
--Reviewed by THOM BRENNAN
"Though favoring the kind of broad sweeps that only irising analog filters so triumphantly utter, Fleury-Steiner is careful to avoid the kind of artful banality that has stifled the creative impetus of, say, the last decade of VangelisÕ output. Not for ŅambianceÓ only, these sumptuous Drifts are too playfully captivating for casual ingestion."
--Reviewed by DARREN BERGSTEIN, e/i #7, winter/spring 2006
"This CD from 2005 offers 60 minutes of lightly coarse ambience. Combining shrill sounds with vaporous resonance, this music ventures just beyond the normal background aspect exemplified by most ambient compositions. While the tonalities never reach any degree of harshness, they are generally more piercing that conventional ambience. Mixed with fragile atmospheric swells, these grittier sounds are sedated, made more sympathetic. This union produces a curious temperance that is refreshing. Mechanical grindings swim in a pool of shimmering clouds. Sparkling chords coexist with twilight drones. Bass gurgles penetrate swaying notes that vibrate with a peculiar luminosity. Playful diodes sigh in tandem with lavish textural spreads. While normal ambient compositions take their time slowly evolving into a substantial presence, these tunes get right to the point, then embellish on their themes with engaging variations. With the exception of one twelve minute piece, the tracks average about five minutes in duration, suiting their compressed directness. This longer track pursues an unhurried path in the same mode, blending celestial passages with demonstrative punctuations in a manner that transcends time and space, resulting in an entertaining excursion into nebulous realms of slightly edgy disposition. This release was mastered by ambient pioneer, Robert Rich."
--Reviewed by MATT HOWARTH, SONIC CURIOSITY
"Fleury-Steiner manages to work within a genre that seems to turn out new material as regularly as breathing, yet Drifts has an individual sound, a personality of its own - whilst ideal as aural ambiance it certainly doesn't sink blandly into the background, the structures are too engaging to ignore, too attractive to dismiss."
--Reviewed by PAUL JURY, Morpheus Music

Saul Stokes - Villa Galaxia
(Binary section)
(Price: $12.99) 2008. Always one of the most popular artists on the Hypnos and Binary labels through the years, Saul Stokes is also one we've been very
proud to "launch" into the ambient/electronica world, going back to Saul's first album which was also the first album on Hypnos, Washed
in Mercury in 1997. The first new work by Saul Stokes on Hypnos/Binary since Fields in 2005,
this is certainly one of the most anticipated discs we've released in years.
Saul Stokes says:
Stokesķ 8th solo album to date, Villa Galaxia is a hyperfusion of sonic exploration seeded in Stokesķ
seminary music past, while arcing into a completely new genre defining collection of songs. Stripping away any
notion of ambient drone or chill out labeling, Villa Galaxia surfs its own ocean of contemporary electronic music
culture with eccentric listenable experimentalism wrapped in catchy lyrical orchestras of electronic
fireworks.
Mirko Ruckels, aka recording artist Deepspace, says:
"Hello Radar" is a great opening track, featuring wide-eyed crispy keyboard sounds, and a nice moody
bassline. I can feel that I'm really going to like this- you know the feeling, when an album taps you on
the shoulder and goes, "Are you ready? we are about to become good friends...." It happens far too
infrequently don't you think. "Vapor trails" Slightly melancholy second track- with some great outro key
washes. yay. "Blaze" is completely different and brings the album to a, dare I use the word, "chilled"
place with it's slightly more, well, serious and blue feeling. I really like the big sunny melodies on
"Night Painting". Vibrant, primary colours, sweet sounds. Fingerpainting. "Eta Car is a massive Star"
sounds like an epic Mario Bros game, full of detail and shimmering pixely effects (I don't know what that
means either). Really lovely. This is an excellent album that will attract many listeners. It's full of
nooks and crannies and quite delirious. I like! Nay, love! Bravo Saul!
Villa Galaxia could be characterized as a bit of a throwback to an earlier Stokes sound, a bit simplified and less focused on pretty
melodics than Saul's more recent work like Fields and Vast. Whether Saul's work is more about the melodies or the
rhythms or the ambience, it always retains the the sound & feel of a Saul Stokes album.

Celer - The Everything and the Nothing
(Infraction category)
(Price: $14.99) 2008. Celer is a husband (Will) and wife (Danielle) duo from California that use a variety of strings as the basis for their sound.
Cello, viola, violin and the sounds are mixed in with field recordings, choir, live theremin and then tape spliced and re-assembled in varying lengths
to create a loop base. Those sounds are then sampled, layered and processed. The result is a shimmering orchestra. Periods of silence between
the notes only enhance the sound. Though at times very haunting, it's brightly hazy ambient. Initially "Discourses..." was to be 1 full-length CD with
a bonus CDR (The Everything and the Nothing) to accompany the first 100 copies. When Celer presented the bonus material, with field recordings
mixed in obtained by Danielle over several months in India, the quality of the material was so high that it was suggested and agreed to instead be a
concurrent release of two full-length discs. Edition of 300...

Matt Borghi - December Impressions (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr) 2008. We here at Hypnos have long enjoyed Matt Borghi's subtle atmospheric ambient music, and believed it deserved
more attention. Many of Matt's CDs are out of print, and we've agreed to re-issue a series of our favorite
recordings on the Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint. Simple, restrained, and artful, these recordings deserve to remain in print, and we hope these reissues will
help introduce more of today's ambient music listeners to the work of this important artist. Following
our release of Huronic Minor a few months back, here we announce the second part of our Borghi reissue series,
December Impressions.
Matt says:
December Impressions was conceived, and recorded during the spring of 2001. This is a dark, cold, and steely recording that borders
more on tone poem than full LP release. The tracks are named as sequences, representing parts of the same whole, and a cohesive linear
listen rather than a variety of separate tracks of the same mood. With this release there was an attempt to represent the cold Michigan
winters, or at least the sound of the Michigan landscape during the dark winter m onths. While this recording is truly ambient, and
contemplative in nature it's also quite gritty and cold. This doesn't have the warm, lush synth pad chordings that many ambient recordings
are known for. Comparisons for this recording are difficult becuase there's not a whole lot out there that sounds like it, but comparisons
to Robert Rich, VidnaObmana, Alio Die, and Zoviet France might be appropriate.
*Additional Composer's Note - December Impressions came to be in a weird compositional period. This recording used, as it's source, a
handful of pieces composed a few months earlier when I was working on Elegy for Time. Once I developed these guitar pieces I then
dabbled with composing for frequencies alone. I focused on using low-end frequencies between 100 and 500hz, and I focused on
high-end frequencies from 1Khz - 12Khz. This recording truly embodied the conceptual process of painting with frequencies. I organized
the frequencies wholly on how they worked with regard to creating a steely, icy mood of a Michigan December landscape, even though,
this work was actually being composed in the early spring. December Impressions eventually turned into a stark, and cold kind of ambient
soundtrack. I like the direction that this recording took, but after it's completion I had satisfied my experiments with 'frequency painting'.

Various - Message from a Subatomic World
(Hypnos label)
(Price: $12.99)2008. Having not released any various-artists compilations in the past decade, Hypnos released in 2007
a new compilation Sounds of a Universe Overheard featuring a diverse array of ambient
soundscape artists from around the world. We are proud to follow last year's release with its "mirror
image" compilation, which we believe meets or exceeds that high standard.
Here are another
10 exclusive tracks by 10 artists who have not appeared on Hypnos compilations before, though some
of these artists will certainly be familiar to followers of our label. Message From a Subatomic World in
comparison to its predecessor is perhaps a bit more abstract and deep-space, more mysterious and strange,
whereas Sounds of a Universe Overheard is a bit more musical and structured overall.

Illusion of Safety - The Need to Now

(Price: $10.99) "Illusion of Safety, Dan Burkeās ongoing and ever evolving project since 1983, contributes a fantastic new
album to the experimedia catalog. A hand signed and numbered limited edition release, The Need To Now is one of Burkeās more stark and
minimal works. While more minimalistic overall, The Need To Now still embraces Burkeās penchant for broad dynamics, building from
soft tones, drones, and distant whistling to maddening noise and back down to near silence with just the smallest trace of air space. Music
box like tones dance loosely throughout constructed industrial ambient environments. Soft crackling, static and noises fizzle in and out of focus
while subtle guitar rises quietly in the distance. Deconstructed voices, samples, rhythms, and instruments arranged into brilliant sound
montages in ways reminiscent of the classic GRM school of tape cut ups. A soundtrack for sedated asylum inmates. This masterful work by

Steve Brand - SoulSpiral
(Atmoworks category)
(Price: $12.99) 2008. AtmoWorks is proud to release SoulSpiral by Steve Brand!
Steve wrote about the album on his blog in the AtmoWorks community and he describes the album in a wonderfully personal way...
"SoulSpiral" represents a new phase of work for me, in which I felt the desire to explore the creation of longer, more dense zones which unfold slowly over longer periods of time, as opposed to shorter "songs." The album consists of 2 long tracks, each timing in at over 30 minutes. The first track, "SoulSpiral," is dense mass of ever-shifting drift formed from layers of keyboard, voice and didg textures. Zones change, overlap, shift gradually, letting in more light, then obscuring, designed to take the listener deeper and deeper. The second track, "Worldmaker," begins with a clarion call of deep Tibetan horns. There is a more terrestrial feel here than with the previous. Kora, bells, voice, drums and more densely layered whistling, droning, thunderous textures reach out from the depths of distant timelines. While the first track initiates the journey, "Worldmaker" brings the listener to the other side, into dimly lit worlds, other possible universes, other possible selves.
"SoulSpiral" was in part, inspired by the stream of stunning photos from Hubbell and NASA of worlds taking shape, and by channeled writings that I've been immersed in over the past few years by Jane Roberts/Seth, Lee Carrol/Kryon, Geoffrey Hoppe/Tobias, Barbara Marciniak, Pamela Kribbe/Jesuha and JZ Knight/Ramtha; these books address the expansiveness of consciousness in and around us, and our true creative nature as Human Beings, as opposed to the more limited and limiting one sold to us by organizations, popular culture and advertising.

Jonathan Hughes - Circumflex
(Atmoworks category)
(Price: $12.99) 2008. Jonathan Hughes' debut album for AtmoWorks.
In Jonathan's words from the liner notes: "I'm a big fan of words in general, but specifically of words that evoke a
certain feeling or image, but mean something completely unrelated. I'm also a fan of the minutiae that makes up
the language of various industries. The titles for all the tracks on Circumflex are typographical terms. To me, these
particular words sound like they'd be equally at home in a document from NASA as they would in a book about
graphic design. I wish I could say that the titles had some deep connection to the music, but nope -- they just sounded cool."
Jonathan has previously released acclaimed albums on The Foundry label including Trillium and the virtual
collaboration project, Fluidities, where each track on cd1 could be played randomly with tracks from cd2.

Steve Brand - Bridge to Nowhere (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr) 2008. Steve Brand has just recently started releasing music under his own name, after more than 20
releases in the experimental realm under the name "Augur." Now Brand has a number of recordings
scheduled for release on Hypnos, and also on the AtmoWorks label, and the first of these is Bridge
to Nowhere.
Brand's work has always had a ritualistic element,
and sound sources include: medicine drum, udu, rattles, various flutes, bells, conch shell, thumb piano, cora,
Indian fiddle, found, natural and handmade objects, voice, field recordings and keyboards.
Bridge to Nowhere is a spacious, slow-breathing exploration of a meditative state, and nowhere in
Brand's work is the ritualistic element more present than in this case.
Ambient music in general is often
considered to be "spacy" or conducive to altered states of consciousness in general, but this music
specifically seems exploratory, meditative, and even a bit "druggy" and strange. As fans of this music
ourselves, we particularly love it when an artist seems genuinely to have tapped into a reality outside our
own -- to have slowed down the world or distorted it, or viewed things through a prism or kaleidoscope.
The work of Steve Brand functions in this way, and we're pleased to be able to deliver this incredible,
no-side-effects sound trip, to Hypnos listeners!

M. Griffin - Fabrications
(Hypnos label)
(Price: $12.99) 2008.
Originally announced in 1997 as the follow-up by Hypnos founder Mike Griffin to his debut Sudden Dark, Fabrications has been
reworked, abandoned, restarted from scratch, back-burnered, reimagined, and left frozen in carbonite. Among those who have followed Hypnos
from the beginning, Fabrications achieved a certain notoriety as the album always promised for release in the coming year, which never
quite arrived. 2008 is finally the year in which Fabrications is revealed, perhaps appropriate for the 10-year anniversary of its original planned
release date, 1998.
Generally known as an ambient minimalist, utilizing synthesizers for most of his work, this time M. Griffin took advantage of "real world" sounds,
captured with binaural microphones using a portable digital audio recorder.
For this release, Griffin built up collages of numerous location recording elements, including cars driving on freeways, people walking in long echoing
hallways, the ocean waves in Kona at night, a metalworking factory with heavy machinery crunching away, distant trains, and clothes driers. These
elements were manipulated, combined, worked-on and re-worked, and overlaid with looped spoken elements later created by Griffin in the studio.
The end result comes out something like the Zoviet France soundtrack to a David Lynch film, that is, a dark and dream-like collage of loops, spoken
fragments, disembodied whispers, and the echo of far-off machinery...

Weird - A New Kind of Normal
(Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $15.99) "The first thing you hear on this album is a rumbling sequence which leaves you in no doubt that the territory
to be explored is decidedly retro. There are Tangerine Dream references but they are mixed in equal part with Klaus Schulze and
Ashra influences. The opening track title Klaus to the Edge (!) makes the Schulze reference even more obvious. The guitar when
used is very subtle, giving colour rather than dominating as a lead instrument. The sequence provides the backbone but the
accompanying atmospherics and effects are just as effective. Some of the sounds used will make you go weak at the knees..."...

Syndromeda - A Day in the Fields
(Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $15.99) "Shrill electronics pierce the air, proclaiming dominant attributes drenched with pastoral mien. Sweeping tonalities burble and shimmer, capturing life-giving sunlight in a manner that communicates this vibrancy even in the dark. Nimble-fingered keyboards establish robust melodies that strain to escape the very notes comprising them, bursting forth to generate fresh tunes radiant with bigger-than-life connotations. Prodigious rhythms are present too, lifting the music to dizzying altitudes. The percussion describes mammoth tempos that tremble the ground underfoot. Even when exploring such harsh sonic terrain, though, a tender majesty is zestfully evoked. One track utilizes an array of orchestral instruments (albeit synthetically produced). Magnificent horns and sultry violins blend with regal electronics and heavenly textures, conjuring an alluvial state that defies time and space with its enduring qualities. The sinuous union of these enormous elements is a superb thrill to behold, conveying the listener to a garden of divine scale where each glistening leaf pulsates with wonder and astounding harmony. As the music progresses, one's focus grows larger, expanding to discern greater configurations and embrace the ageless splendor that surrounds us."

Jiannis - Plugged
(Neu Harmony category)
(Price: $15.99) "Plugged is a Berlin School, analogue, sequential masterpiece. The shortest track is eighteen minutes so things are really given plenty
of room to develop and mutate creating pure aural heaven. 'Erstes Schattenspiel' (catchy title) begins with lonesome synth sounds and vocoded speech
in the manner of 'Chromium Echoes'. Don't worry these vocals are used more as a sound, not singing. As soon as the opening sequence takes its first
tentative steps low in the mix, fitting perfectly to the washes of synth, you just know that you are in for something VERY special. The sequence beefs itself
up and is accompanied by another sequence of a more ballsy variety. The lead line is a real stunner and sends the spine a tingling rather than screeching
through the cranium, just right. It is constantly changing and being put through all manner of effects and I was hypnotized by it...."...

Darkened Soul - Bathys (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr) 2008. Hypnos is pleased to announce Bathys, the first appearance on our label (in this
case, our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint) by Darkened Soul.
The word "bathys" in Greek translates as "deep," and the rest of the titles here continue the Greek
language theme. It's the root of the word "bathyscaph" which is a submersible vessel for deep sea
exploration.
"Deep" is relevant here, as this recording collects resonant dark ambient sounds into aural mixtures
deep and spacious.
This aural journey is evocative of a subterranean trek through wet, metal-walled tunnels, with gritty
textures underfoot, and dripping sounds of water. Vague hints of machine-like sounds can be heard
churning away in the distance. Bathys by Darkened Soul is an exercise in resonant dark
ambient textures.
Darkened Soul is a psydonym under which Mike Soucy records dark ambient soundscapes. His previous
releases have been mostly self-released, though Hypnos followers may have seen his release Seasons
of Dark and Light on Umbra, the Italian label operated by recording artist Oophoi.

Kwook - Skywave
(Blue Oasis category)
(Price: $13.99) 2008. "At first, it's hard to say why Skywave, the CD by Kwook, sounds so nostalgic. Is it the occasional Mellotron sound? The buzzing lead lines or sweeping synth pads? Or just the overall electronic aura that seems to engulf this album? All of these qualities (as well as a hint of IDM beats) and more make for a captivating release. But it's more the positive attitude of this artist that gives his music its nostalgic feel than any riff or melody. Comprised of subtle yet beautifully varied tracks Skywave glows in transfixing simplicity. The piece Sunspots is a standout. With its catchy bassline and melodious flute, it produces an ample amount of momentum and intrigue. A common thread throughout is the insertion of squelchy short-wave radio fragments. These lost communications add the sensation of floating through the ether and are used to great effect in the lengthy title piece, which spans three tracks at the end of the disc. Our friend Kwook believes that sound is a playground. His inventive approach, full of joy and clarity, makes the journey new."

Various Artists - Perceived Distances
(Blue Oasis category)
(Price: $13.99) 2008. "Perceived Distances is an anthology CD that represents the Ambient aesthetic of the Blue Oasis label. Works by Saul Stokes and Kwook express the more energetic side of this concern. With ear-friendly melodies and thought-pushing beats their tracks are wonderful jaunts across a diverse digital terrain. Other tracks on this collection exemplify explorations of tone in the broadest sense of the word. Through fascinating variations in timbre and texture music by the likes of The Circular Ruins, Off the Sky and Cymphonic produce a range of moody impressions and time-stretching atmospheres. These artists understand that negative space is much more than merely the area between two positive points. Subtle digital distortion, voices and noises imbue some of these realizations with a kind of environmental feel. In contrast, other tracks are full of air and light, and offer drifting moods at cosmic heights. As a collection, Perceived Distances works very well. It brings together 15 interesting musicians. By provoking the listener to reflection, it works even better as a statement on the genre - proclaiming the power of this music to be greater than the individual."

The Circular Ruins - Falling into the Sky
(Blue Oasis category)
(Price: $13.99) "The Circular Ruins (Anthony Paul Kirby) is exploring a personal realm of assertive, emotional ambient music. A fascinating series of electronic poems that invent a sonic sphere all their own, Falling Into the Sky (64'11") attempts to liberate the mind of the listener from its own self-impression. As soundscapes gradually shift and unfold, textures transform and we linger easily within a wondrous soundworld. Synthesizer pads churn behind fluttering atmospherics while further in a digital wind stirs up strange cosmic debris. Narrative runs adrift and the hiss and murmur of distant chords occupy the foreground. Vibrating with energy, Falling Into the Sky inhabits the amorphous area between the earth's surface and outer space, and continually reveals itself in revelations revealed in repeat visits."

Cymphonic - Phonema Sacrata
(Blue Oasis/ Dataobscura category)
(Price: $13.99) "The eight small tracks on Phonema Sacrata (53'17") by Cymphonic do not stimulate the edges of the listener's ears
the way long-form pieces do, but rather they open outward in the mind. This music stimulates every part of the brain, and may provide a
bit of reprogramming - it absolutely does inspire abstract thoughts. Swinging wider than most, the work hangs together in a sort of
dream-state narrative. A mesmerizing mix of original electronic sounds, recurring evocative themes, dreamy rhythms, grainy samples
and unique pacing, Phonema Sacrata is an imagination finding form in music. It is a work inhabiting its own territory. Seeming to deal
with the sleeper and his access to other worlds, Cymphonic develops a brilliantly shaped hallucinatory landscape. The transitions
between tracks are masterful and the work evokes a strange new place at each turn. This album provides a fascinating ambient
encounter. The most challenging part is in returning to the reality the listening experience transports us away from."

Robert Davies - Garden of Twilight
(Blue Oasis/ Dataobscura category)
(Price: $13.99) "Robert Davies, whose album Sub Rosa landed on my best of 2006 list, turns his minimalist ambient eye on a landscape
less melancholic (and melodic) on Garden of Twilight, a worthy follow-up but one that is (for me) more satisfying from an intellectual and
aesthetic level than from an emotional one. That comment doesnāt mean this is a poor album, however. Davies works in much more
subdued and subtle vein than he did on Sub Rosa. For ambientphiles who enjoy drifting minimalism with just a hint of melody among the

Matt Borghi - Huronic Minor (Ltd CDR)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, ltd cdr) 2008. We here at Hypnos have long enjoyed Matt Borghi's subtle atmospheric ambient music, and believed it deserved
more attention. Many of Matt's CDs are out of print, and we've agreed to re-issue a series of our favorite
recordings on the Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint. The first of these Matt Borghi reissues will be Huronic Minor.
Simple, restrained, and artful, these recordings deserve to remain in print, and we hope these reissues will
help introduce more of today's ambient music listeners to the work of this important artist.
"...drifting ambient music par excellence. Matt's forte is similar to that of Stephen Philips' - the ability to meld subtle synthesizer shadings and drones into mesmerizing cloud-like tone poems.
I never got bored with this CD, although if a non-ambient fan would listen to it, he or she might think the sound was monotonous. But that is true ambient music¹s appeal. A startling shift of
abrupt change calls attention to the music, thereby making it "non-ambient." Huronic Minor is that rarest of ambient releases, i.e. a joy to listen to in silence and be consumed by or equally
effective played softly in the background as a sonic antidote for one's own confused or stressed out world so to speak. However one listens ton this highly recommended recording, the
CD¹s worth and artistry are unmistakable..."

A Produce - The Clearing
(A Produce category)
(Price: $13.99 cdr) 2008. Reissue of an early A Produce project, never before released on CD and somewhat of a departure from his later work.
Trance Port is proud to release the final A Produce re-issue of his first album (1988), "The Clearing."
"The Clearing" was originally released in 1988 in an edition of 500 LPs. At the time, AP considered it an album of conceptual space. It was also very much a transitional album, AP having gone from playing guitar in the dark dance band Afterimage in the early 80s to where he was headed musically and creatively in the 90s on up to the present. The notion of the Trance Port label also evolved in the early 80s, first as a cassette releasing label of what was evolving as the L.A. underground music scene. Many of the artists AP met during that time appeared on the two "L.A. Mantra" compilations issued on Trance Port during those years. Many also appeared on the tracks of "The Clearing" project. AP is thankful for those artists varied contributions on this album. It would not have turned out as well and as interesting a project without them.
After release of "The Clearing" LP, A Produce began to drift into more space/ambient realms. Some of "The Clearings" original tracks have appeared on later compilations of my work. This is the first time the entire album has been rejoined as the whole it originally came from. An added lost track has been included on this CD release to complete the experience. For this release, all track tracks have been remastered by Loren Nerell and AP...

The Sublime careens from drone ambient, to churning, confrontational Aphex Twin style rhythms, with perhaps more rich and diverse
sound content than any album we've ever released. Normally we'd have reservations about releasing a double CD by a young,
emerging artist but this one justifies its duration without question. If you're not sure about buying an ambient 2CDR release
by an artist unknown to you, just give the MP3 sample clips a try.

Troum - Objectlessness
(Faria category)
(Price: $13.99) 2007. "There is a big gap between rational, verbal language and the pre-symbolic language of our emotional and
unconscious mind. Music is perceived partly with our conscious mind, who can analyze it and reflect on it. On another part, it is perceived
by our unconsciousness, by our primal consciousness that lies under the rational mind. The idea: Experimental music, especially that
of a more droning character, can easier get in touch or be unconsciously connected with this primal state of mind. It is music that is
linked with unconscious fantasies coming from a pre-verbal sphere of existence... the phase of life based on the dyadic interaction
with the primal object, the mother. At this early stage, thereās no awareness existing of being a full separated Subject, and no other
full separated Objects can be perceived. Inner and outer reality is the same. Spheric, droning, dissolving music is pointing unconsciously
at this objectless sphere of existence. This release is dedicated to the idea of an especially formed pre-symbolic music. Artwork
conception contain 4 cards and cover with art from english creator Pete Burn."

Calabi-Yau - Compactified
(Faria category)
(Price: $13.99) 2008. "Calabi-Yau (called in the names of two mathematicians (Eugenio Calabi) and (Shing-Tung Yau )) spaces may
be that microscopic shape, deep inside the hidden dimensions of string theory. There are many such spaces... According to string theory,
space-time isn't 4-dimensional as you might expect, but 10-dimensional. Where are the extra six dimensions? One answer is that they're
compactified: roughly speaking, rolled up into such a small space as to be unobservable at human scales. You are in the forest, it is night,
and in a moment you are in space, exploring the phenomena, for which there is no explanation and knowledge in our day... ¦And You hear
the sound of loquacious water far away from You. The sky is in front of Youā¦You can observe all the planets to be clearly. And there are
plenty of animals around You, which You've never seen before, which are so close, that they are almost touching You. Thought is equal
to movement, there is no difference between them."

Aglaia - Unprofaned Twilight
(Faria category)
(Price: $13.99) 2008. "This is joint edition of Faria Records and Hic Sunt Leones. The fourth cd of Aglaia is born from the previous work
but, in comparison with them, it develops a wider breath directly from the backgroundās sounds. The composition is softer and more
refined. Again the sonorous world that here is explored is that one of the enchantment, of the mild sound fading. An unprofaned and
inviolate twilight, where the different vibrations are balanced, without any sort of tensions. Time rolls by and space too. The sound is a natural
matter and gives birth to an intense crepuscolar light. Listening to this music is like to see thousands of fine luminous rays, filtered through
half-closed windows. A dance of dust in a never ending movement that catches the light around. With aglaia's sound we are in an
electroacoustic microcosm full of vibrating signs. The first of the two long compositions suggests a natural and quiet landscape. The sound's
mood is a sort of perpetual tinkling, wrapped up a voice coming from the space, that observes from afar. An harmonic accordance between
different reality. The second, even though more intimate, is equally shining. Everything happens during a night where insects, spring-waters
and moonlight match themselves together. A swarming midnight with underworld life."

Antonio Testa - Inframundis
(Faria category)
(Price: $13.99) 2007. "Inframundis (inland universe, latin) is a research of stalagmites and stalagtites sounds mixed with textures and
drones; It's a meditative record and it creates a balance between biosphere and technosphere. The cd gets free all its energies, its little/big
sounds, its hidden atmospheres, and microharmonies. The sounds, music, make us come back to the past, offering us the view of a World.
The sound evokes angelical moments between the imperceptible evolution of the sound of the sky and the ethnic roots, natural instrumental
sounds creating atmospheres which evoke in our imaginary visions and images of the most far places. It is an alchemic project of ancestral
sounds. Deeply rooted in our unconscious."

Faryus - Lucid Dreams
(Faria category)
(Price: $13.99) 2007. "This album is devoted to a phenomenon of the Lucid dreams. A "lucid dream" is a dream, in which the person is
aware that he or she is dreaming while the dream is in progress. During lucid dreams you have control over the dream characters and
environment, as well as the ability to perform otherwise physically impossible feats. The feelings which you feel during lucid dreams are very
similar to those available during a waking state. Often they surpass the 'usual' with a saturation and intensity. This phenomenon has been
researched by such well-known researchers as Stephen LaBerge, Robert Monroe, Carlos Castaneda, etc.. The 9th book of Carlos Castaneda -
The Art of Dreaming explains more fully the events occurring within this album. The album is conceived as travel from the moment of falling
asleep up to the depths of the infinite universe of the Dreaming: āVivid Dreamā - this is a dream, where colors and events are extremely
bright. After awakening we never forget these dreams, it remains in the memory as a very exciting experience. It is the first phase of lucid
dreaming and the beginning of our travel. We can then find Clarity, passing through the first gate of dreaming to enjoy the Lucid Dream.
Opening infinite opportunities of the universe of dreaming we begin our "Free Flying" obtaining the sanctum sanctorum of the dreaming
universe - to the World of Inorganic Beings".

Svartsinn - Traces of Nothingness
(Cyclic Law category)
(Price: $13.99) The 3rd offering from Norway's Svartsinn could be acknowledged as the end of a trilogy, the first opus "Devouring Consciousness" was an album containing stories made during what the artist explains as being some difficult and rough times. The second offering, "Of Darkness And Re-Creation", was the process of trying to deal with these struggles and reflect on them. "Traces Of Nothingness" is simply the reaction, result and the path ahead in this ongoing, seemingly endless darkness. A slightly more melodic, sad and obscure side of Svartsinn that still keeps the cold and dark atmosphere that defines his sound.

Sinke Dus - Akrasia
(Cyclic Law category)
(Price: $13.99) Akrasia is an old question dealing with the weakness of the will. To behave "akratically" is when one acts against his better judgement, committing acts that are known to be wrong but yet still going through with the motion. Markus Lonebrink wanted to explore not so much the philosophical issues at hand, but rather the subjective experience of akrasia itself. To learn of the underlying motives of when one acts akratically. Certain events in the akratic process felt natural to him and it was those he tried to integrate into these soundscapes. There are no conclusions described in the music, but there might be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and perhaps the shadow of a hint of why we humans sometimes act as irrationally as we do. A shared quest to gain better knowledge of oneself through this self-revisionistic ambient journey filled with ethereally lush passages that give way to a truly visionary and immersive experience. The album also features a special collaboration with Pär Bostrom of KAMMARHEIT. In fold out gatefold cardboard sleeve.

Austere - Solyaris
(Hypnos label)
(Price: $12.99) 2008. This is a creative peak for this much-overlooked ambient duo, their first release on Hypnos, following their Hypnos Secret Sounds
album Pulse in 2007. In their 10 years of productivity, Austere has covered territory from Pulse's drone minimalism , ranging
back through odd and trippy Coil-inspired sonic experimentation, to seamless dark ambient, and occasionally glitchy weirdness. Despite
some challenging material in their back catalog, Austere have in this case produced an album as friendly and pleasant as any Austere fan
could have imagined possible, and yet without resorting to the usual tricks that make music sound "listenable."
Bill Binkelman of Wind and Wire said of Austere:
"Austere is an enigmatic duo who record some of the more interesting ambient music I've heard in my six plus years of reviewing.
From the swirling drones (I was gonna say "dark" drones, but ....) and eerie melancholy of Monodia to the warmth and beauty amidst
minimalism of Fade... Austere are less concerned with following the path and more concerned with breaking new ground. However,
they are undoubtedly enigmatic, as one would glean from the above, and shun the spotlights of media and personality."
And the Austere boys themselves, not normally prone to gushing or self-praise, say these words on the subject of this recording:
"Solyaris, our first release for 2008 e.v. on the Hypnos label is major departure from our recent emphasis on Minimalist composition,
but more in the direction started by our last release, mirror.shtml and is instead is a collection of recordings improvised and recorded
"live" over a weekend session and are presented in their original form, unedited in any way aside from mastering by The Sound-O-Mat.
The recordings turned out extremely well; it was obvious that our Muse(s) had visited us, and we were able to simply "let the tapes roll"
and play, and this recording is made up from one track each from a recording session (we may release the rest at some later point.)
We could not be more happy with the sound of this album there was definitely something special about that weekend and it was one
of those rare occasions where everything just seemed to come together without any effort, and we think this is reflected in the musick.
The CD flows very nicely, and is one of the most uplifting and special CDs we have ever released. We hope that you might enjoy it at
least half as much as we do."

ISAN - Digitalis
(Darla category)
(Price: $10.99) "English duo of Robin Saville and Antony Ryan make beautiful sounds, picking up their signals from deep space, like pulse coded informational rhythmic tone clusters of synthetic extraterrestrial folk music of cellular activities, breathing, bubbling, and fizzing with life. All instrumental, seven tracks, bringing to mind; Cluster, Microstoria, To Rocco Rot, and even grand daddies Kraftwerk. -- George Parsons, DREAM Magazine. At home. The synthesizer sounds great, warm, embracing, lively, almost alive. But what's that noise, that strange hiss? You open up the main wooden cabinet. You suddenly realize that this synthesizer once was alive. It used to be a bug's family living room. The hiss and the buzz is caused by, now long dead, little bug kids who glued themselves to the filter circuits and who tried to play table tennis on the A-C-adaptor. "Should I clean the inside? Should I get rid of the cracklings?," you ask yourself. No way, you like what you hear. This keyboard is alive. Its good that way. You close the door and start recording... If our mutual friend found beetles in his synth, ISAN'S equipment must be inhabited by proper salamanders, pattering constantly over circuits, stumbling over wires. Robin and Toe, the two mates operating this 'Integrated Services Analogue Network' (ISAN), appreciate the salamander's help and dedicated this whole album to their little friend. A couple of years ago, they both met in Leicester, discovered a common interest in "using dodgy old keyboards to make a dodgy old noise" and started recording together. Mixing the simple beauty of melodies generated with analogue keyboards and the bumpy, quirky rhythms old drum machines create when you switch them on, ISAN produce some of the most irresistible pop anthems the whole family can hum along to."

Hammock - Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop An Echo
(Darla category)
(Price: $13.99) "Raising Your Voice
Trying to Stop an Echo is the anticipated follow up to Hammocks debut, Kenotic, a record that All Music Guide described as
in every way a contender for classic status in the Shoegazing genre. Although cherished in Shoegazer circles, Kenotics two months charting in CMJs Radio 200 and high profile appearances during NBCs 2006 Olympic Coverage and on NPRs All Songs Considered, Hearts of Space, Echoes and Musical Starstreams revealed that Hammock was also causing a stir among tastemakers and fans of Ambient, Post-Rock, Drone and Electronic. The duos eighteen newest tracks will do little to change that cross-genre appeal. Raising Your Voice
Trying to Stop an Echo is characterized by the duos hallmark: thick curtains of cascading electric guitars that merge into pure expressions of hope, stillness, joy and loss. Accompanied by strings, piano, ethereal vocals and an occasional undercurrent of percussion, these beautiful, layered guitar washes range from whisper-soft minimalism to moments of driving, slow-burn intensity. Simply put, Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson make music that is filled with human passion and emotion. Welcome to this winters new soundtrack. "
a perfect combination of the swirling, amorphous beauty of ambient music and the passionate pulse of electronica.

Jonathan Block - The Anatomy of Waves (ltd. cdr)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, cdr) 2008. Hypnos is very pleased to announce a new release by Jonathan Block on our Hypnos Secret Sounds imprint.
Jonathan has previously worked with Hypnos, when his album Sonic Approach (under his alter-ego Synthetic Block)
was released on our Binary sub-label. Also his track 'The Language of Rocks' heads off the most recent Hypnos
compilation Sounds of a Universe Overheard.
The new album, The Anatomy of Waves, is a series of four long
tracks featuring improvisations, created using a wind synthesizer processed
through an effects pedal board and looped using long delay times that
fade slowly, enabling new sounds and loops to be added and subtracted.
All the tracks have a compositional foundation but this structure is
fluid enough to allow the music to move in any number of directions,
often simultaneously. From melodic to abstract, musical elements
emerge and coalesce by design and hazard as phrases interact with one
another and sounds are added that never become part of a repeating loop.
Jonathan Block has been releasing electronic music for over 20 years,
often under the name Synthetic Block. Blocks music has been released
by Hypnos, Binary and Gears of Sand. In addition to his solo works,
Block has performed and recorded with Dave Fulton, The Circular Ruins
(APK) and Ben Fleury-Steiner.

Of his debut CD, Nverxion says, "A Look Within

concerned with learning my way through the process of creating and recording the sound... As I

Various - Sounds of a Universe Overheard
(Hypnos label)
(Price: $12.99) 2007. Long-time Hypnos listeners may recall
that we released a couple of compilations in the early years, The Other World and Weightless, Effortless, which included
exclusive tracks by many of the all-time greats of this music scene. Both those
compilations were very well-received by critics, DJs, and all kinds of listeners. So you could ask, and many have,
why hasn't Hypnos released any more compilations recently? Maybe because they're a lot of work, much more work than a regular
CD by a single artist, and time is always a constraining factor when running a small label by yourself. Do you do one compilation album, or
do you spend that time putting together two or three regular CDs? Well now, Hypnos is no longer a one-man operation, so more time is
available, and that has allowed us to take on the task of putting together these compilations.
The first compilation is Sounds of a Universe Overheard, a collection of ten tracks exclusive to this CD, created by a cross-section
of ambient, experimental and soundscape artists from around the world. Included in this diverse group are more established recording artists
who will be known to most listeners to these genres, as well as new, emerging names. We feel a compilation is most interesting when it
varies from the familiar to the new. This disc covers
all sorts of territory in terms of sound, from more musical and soundtrack-like sounds, to darker ambient, to pure sonic experimentation.

Seren Ffordd - Veils, Shadows (ltd cdr)
(Hypnos Secret Sounds section)
(Price: $11.99, cdr) 2007.Veils, Shadows is the Hypnos debut of a unique talent, whose work is both mysterious and unusual,
resulting in a sound at once listenable and challenging. Seren Ffordd has mostly been released on the Umbra
and Penumbra labels operated (by Hypnos artist Oophoi) out of Italy, though the artist himself resides in
Wales. His first connection to Hypnos came through the compilation CD Sounds of a Universe Overheard,
but Hypnos released Veils, Shadows on Hypnos Secret Sounds before the compilation's release.
Seren Ffordd is one of those few artists perfectly in tune with what we're trying to do here at Hypnos, which
is explore atmospheres that are dark without being "industrial" or intentionally abrasive, rather more hypnotic
and dreamy, with a dose of the surreal. We're pleased and excited to introduce his work to those listeners who are
familiar with Hypnos, and interested in sound worlds like this, but who have not yet heard this particular sound. We're
sure Seren Ffordd will end up being acclaimed and much-discussed in coming years.

(faria label)
(Price: $14.99 import) 2007. Russian import. A reflection from outer spaces in between the universe of our mind.
A miniature of the endless space from far behind mankinds tangibility.
To understand the real essence of the heart of the matter, often it is necessary to take a look from the distance. Just this distance shows structures and connections, which are otherwise impossible to see and grasp because everyone himself is part of a certain situation. Therefore Outland stands for a journey into an outer land, to become an advanced view for realization.

Numina - Shift to the Ghost
(Hypnos label)
(Price: $12.99) 2007. Numina's third album on Hypnos Recordings is "Shift
to the Ghost," a long-form continuous piece with indexed
track points. Each song is distinctly different in feel,
but the songs evolve seamlessly into each other.
Numina himself states that the album "is about the life
and death of the physical self," hence the title.
Whatever the concept, this album contains all the
elements Numina fans enjoy, from deep and sombre
ambient, to twinkling, swirling space music, constantly
evolving. It's a long, fascinating visual journey,
and it never grows tired. The latest work from ambient "rising star" Numina is possibly his best yet.
"a Great album. calmful and dark beauty, Highly Recommended!"
--Parallel Worlds, on the Hypnos Forum
"Numina music is a blend of synthesized ambient and classic spacemusic, its drones river-deep rather than abyssal, at times
somber and mournful (Spiral Reminders), even Goth-like (Light Travelling), at others majestic and seeking to surge towards the light (the
finale The Hostless Ghost)... The
prevailing sonic dynamic of breathing, oozing, slow flow adumbrates a drift-zone familiar to ambient-space aficionados from mid-period
vidnaObmana....it is decidely the most eloquent statement of Numinas spiritual space manifesto yet."
--Alan Lockett, www.ei-mag.com
"Jesse Solas latest release under the Numina name brings us another class assortment of deep dark dreamy ambience."
© 2007 Phil Derby / Electroambient Space
"In crafting a sonic narrative of the journey from life to afterlife, Numina has created a listening experience that is utterly immersive...This is signature Numina, moving as slowly
as sleeping breath, elegant layers laid thickly upon layers with a certain and graceful hand...Shift to the Ghost is another Hypnagogue Highly Recommended CD from Numina."
--Reviewed by John @ Hypnogogue

vidnaObmana - An Opera for Four Fusions Works (Acts 1-4, 4CDs)
(Hypnos label)
(Price: $41.99, 4CDs) 2002-2007.Now that Acts 1-4 of vidnaObmana's epic OPERA FOR FOUR FUSION WORKS project have been released (spanning 2002-2007), we're making available a discounted package of all 4 parts together, for those of you who have not purchased any of the parts along the way.
The usual disclaimer applies... this music is not in any real sense "opera" music, and the term is used only to suggest the varied, multi-part quality of this ongoing release.
AN OPERA FOR FOUR FUSION WORKS is a unique project by Vidna Obmana and Hypnos -- a four-CD album, released one CD at a time. The first disc comes in a case (similar to the one used for Robert Rich's Humidity) that will have space for all four discs, though slots 2, 3 and 4 will be empty. The listener can then purchase the later installments as they are released gradually, and insert them into the case.
Act I used guitar pieces from Dreams in Exile, Act II used Bill Fox's saxophone recordings, Act III worked from the foundation of Kenneth Kirschner's piano works, and this last installment utilizes the voice of Steven Wilson ( No-Man, Porcupine Tree, and the artist behind Bass Communion)...
