Title: Cover songs....
Post by: Seren on September 12, 2008, 06:52:40 AM
Anyone got a song they want to do a cover version of, even for fun, from any field of music.

I've always wanted to do a version of Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' - no idea why, just intrigues me.

Severed Heads, "We Have Come to Bless This House".  Not sure why; I've covered it several times, never happy with the results.  It just calls to me, I guess...

I had in mind the idea of doing a series of strange electronic covers of 80s hard rock songs, stuff by AC/DC, Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Scorpions, that sort of thing.  I had this idea a long, long time ago and have never even taken a stab at it.

I've done a ton of covers over the years, but strangely they've mostly been heavy guitar versions of not-so-heavy songs.  So I've taken the opposite approach, Mike, and turned Severed Heads into Skullflower. ;D

I did a sitar raga once based on Rainbow's "Gates of Babylon."  Maybe I should record it.

You know you want to release this:

Metal Faves:  A Hypnos Tribute album

Killed by Death - by Numina
Balls to the Wall - M Griffin
Aces High - Saul Stokes
Turbo Lover - Sans Serif
Come on Feel the Noize- Matt Borghi

Ah, I could go on, but won't.... :)

Round it off with "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Jim Cole and Spectral Voices.

I'd rather do "Girls Got Rhythm" actually, or "Shoot To Thrill"

For a long, long time I've had a desire to create an album of electronic versions of
Bruce Cockburn songs (Silver Wheels, Thoughts On A Rainy Afternoon...).

I had a similar idea with the hard rock but with singer/songwriter arrangements. Just a folkie guy with an acoustic guitar doing "Metal Health."

Check out the various folky AC/DC cover albums by Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters... actually very nice.

I have this old Projekt compilation cd From Across This Gray Land 3 and in it is a hilarious cover from some Goth group called Thanatos.  There's a slow druid-beat laid down,  and in comes this really deep voice that sounds a little like Lurch or Dracula, and he starts to sing in in the slowest motion possible " ... OOOHHH THAAAT'S THE WAY..... UH, HUH, UH HUH.... I LIIIKKEEE IT,  UH HUH, UH HUH..."  ;D It's pretty funny, the "uh-huh's" are very deliberate and un-emotional.

Ray Charles  "Makin' Whoopee"
Harry Nillson  "Jump Into the Fire"
George Harrison "Isn't It A Pity"

i think it would be really cool to take some brittney spears, christine aguielera, madonna and other pop songs and totally warp them around and mash them into serious ambient drones. maybe some country tunes in there, too.

I may have posted this before, but... there's some pretty amusing work along these lines by sonic subversive v/vm on his assemblage Sick Love:

His 'rendering' of the appalling Chris de Burgh's execrable The Lady in Red is exquisite ;)

I love doing covers. I contributed tracks to a couple of Mellow Records (Italian progressive label) for their ELP an Canterbury tribute sets. Here's my take on King Crimson's Sailor's Tale:

jblock..."The Sailor's Tale" is really good!

So, I had this idea while listening.  If we each did a cover of something and posted it here...

Would there be an easy way to do such a thing?
Would anyone else do it?
Would we get in trouble with the copyright police?  I mean it wouldn't be anything for release or money making ventures, it would be more like an internet jam board thing.

I'm game.

"Into the Groove" by ol Madonna is one that continually gets the cover treatment, so why not an ambient version....

I'm going to work on something tonight. hehe.
