Title: Time to fire up the gift card
Post by: Hypnagogue on December 23, 2007, 07:38:33 AM
Thanks to the boss I've got a lovely iTunes gift card burning a hole in a briefcase. But you know, I'm sort of lazy and killing time looking for good ambient/electronic stuff over there just doesn't appeal to me.

So tell me, Forumites, what three CDs you think I should go get over at iTunes. (And yes, feel free to include your own music!!)

Genuine thanks,
The 'Gogue

Something by Murcof .... "Remembranza" perhaps.

Or Jeff Greinke : Soundtracks.

I would recomend Chris Short (Ma Ja Le) "The Garden"

You won't regret it!

Oh yeah, I echo Paul's suggestion. "The Garden" is one of the best ambient discs I've heard this year.

I got some iTunes Store gift cards as well... thanks for the Tord Gustavsen Trio recommendation Joe! I hadn't heard of them before reading this thread. I love the 'Being There' album and I think you nailed it in three words: slow, spacious, beautiful. Thanks again!

I still have some credit at the store... any more recommendations anyone?

I used my Itunes gift card to get 2 Van Morrison albums (Astral Weeks & Moondance), not ambient but great music I can't believe it took me this long to buy.

An under-rated Morrison album that I'm very fond of is Inarticulate Speech of the Heart.
It's quite simple and just beautiful - there's a Mark Isham influence happening (with a hint of ambient). It's from a three album series
with Isham in the group and it's a favourite period of mine: Common One, Beautiful Vision and Inarticulate Speech.

A recent DVD release of Morrison live at Montreax is also highly recommended. Mark Isham again, just on trumpet,
and a fine band with Pee Wee Ellis, strong arrangements and Morrison in a good mood (not a certainty) and in fine voice.
There's a sample here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZUbjFCvlC0
If you love Morrison, it's a must.

Hey Mark- glad you enjoyed the Tord Gustavsen! If you're looking for more slooowww jazz, I'd recommend "Vassilis Tsabropoulos-Achirana", which I enjoy as much as "Being There". I remember someone suggesting these 2 discs in the forum, and I stored it in my memory bank until I bought them last week.

I always loved "Astral Weeks", but never did care for "Moondance". It's nice to know that "Veedon Fleece" is similar to "Astral", I'll have to pick it up now. 8)

So far I've picked up OYC's "Euphoria...", a couple of Roach's Lost Pieces series (Texture Maps and Places Beyond, having all the rest), and Dwight Ashley's "Watermelon Sugar", with Chris' "Garden" on the list as soon as I activate one of the other gift cards I ended up with. (Apparently the boss forgot to do so!) Also through the miracle of iTunes I hunted down the Steve Kindler & Teja Bell CD "Dolphin Smiles" from 1987. Not ambient, but a very nice smooth jazz/New Age blend--Kindler's violin is like silk on water.
