Title: Hypnos Forum move
Post by: mgriffin on January 03, 2008, 12:02:22 PM
Hypnos Forum move happening today (Thursday Jan 03, 2008)

The entire www.hypnos.com web site is in the process of being moved to a new server during the next few days.  The old server and new server will continue to operate simultaneously until next week, so there will be two Hypnos news pages, two Hypnos stores, two Hypnos CD releases pages, and so on.  We'll update both old and new in sync with each other during this transition, so it won't matter whether you visit one Hypnos store or the other -- in both cases, your order will be accepted and completed just fine.

One part of the Hypnos web site that cannot be run in tandem (two versions running at once until the transfer is complete) is this Forum.  Because there's a database that's updated every time someone posts a message or creates a new membership, or even updates their "signature" or their avatar, there is no way of keeping two Hypnos Forums in sync for several days without an unreasonable amount of non-stop work.  For that reason, later tonight, this Hypnos Forum, the one you're looking at right now, will be taken offline for maintenance, and the databases (including members, forum topics, posts, and everything) will be backed-up and moved over to the new Hypnos Forum which is already running in test mode, and has been checked-out by your trusty Forum Moderators, JKN and APK.

Soon after this Forum goes "down" into maintenence mode, that database backup & restore will be completed and the new Forum will be active and ready.  I will post an address on the Hypnos News page that points directly to the new Forum.  I will also post that link here, below, but please do not start visiting and posting to the NEW Forum before this Forum goes down into maintenence mode, otherwise any posts you make there will be wiped-out when this OLD Forum is backed-up and moved over.

The link to the new Hypnos Forum effective late 1/3/08 and onward will be http://208.131.140.64/smf/ (http://208.131.140.64/smf/)

Eventually the hypnos.com internet domain will be converted over and you will be able to reach that Forum via the same address as this one, which is www.hypnos.com/smf

Please use this space (in the NEW Forum, starting Friday 1/4/2008) to post troubleshooting requests, problems, or questions relating to the NEW Forum.

A reminder.... you may visit that link to the NEW Forum prior to this OLD Forum becoming unavailable if you're just curious, and feel free to poke around and look all you want... but don't make any changes or posts that you don't want to be wiped-out when I convert over!  Continue to post here until the move is complete.

Thanks,
Mike

Made this a "sticky" so it will be visible on top to everyone, until this move is behind us.

I just disabled new member registration, but it will be enabled on the new Forum later tonight.  This was done so that I could move across all members now and then just worry about topics & posts later tonight when the move is completed.

OK, everything seems to be fixed, except user avatars which have disappeared again.  I think those may still be fixable, but for now I'm going to leave the "old" Forum closed and say we're officially open for business here on the "new" Hypnos Forum!

Thanks for your patience, everyone.  I'll keep working to fine tune everything, but feel free to post questions, problems, concerns and so on... post them right here in this topic.

I was a bit worried earlier tonight, but all's well at this point.

HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF...

I hope to wake up in the morning and check in here, and find that the usual visitors have had no problems logging in and posting.

Everything is looking good :)
Right now you can't upload an avatar image, but this will be fixed soon.

I've made some changes to the avatar settings and permissions, and more of them are showing-up, now.  I'll keep working on it until everyone can either see their existing avatar, or at least upload a new one.

So far - no issues that I can fine.  I'm using the default theme.

I guess it will be easier to figure out how things are going, once more people come across and log in and try to post.

I'm here and hopefully my avatar (which is displayed right now at the top of the screen) will appear when I submit this post.

I like the new digs. The roof doesn't leak and the furnace works.

I'm concerned that maybe a lot of people are having trouble logging-in for some reason.  I see lots of "guests" viewing the Forum at any given time, but not many logged-in members.

Maybe people are just browsing and waiting to see more traffic before they bother logging in.

I won't be able to work on this much until later today, but if people are trying to log in and unable to do so, please email me at mg (at) hypnos.com

Login was painless and this is my test post.   one, two, three...

Well, maybe people saw the notification of the upcoming move and they decided to stay away for a few days until the dust settled.

Note: Lena looks nothing like the picture in her avatar, which is from before I met her.  She has long hair now!

Hey, husband~

You get another Karma point for staying up half the night working on this, (while I was comfortably snoozing away)... :-*

Hey thanks!  I have double-digit karma points!   And I'm kinda tired from staying up half the night, so I'll gladly take your karma, thanks.

God, you two sound so in love! ::)

Actually, kudos to you both. In this day and age, it's nice to see this level of affection. Admittedly, not sure how two ambientphiles ended up so well-adjusted, but.... :o  :D

Just very strong then. Playing the cello under your chin must be quite the show stopper!

Here and with avatar too (though I accidently typed in 'avatart' - perhaps I should get a new picture to fit!!).

Mike, will we be able to choose from more skins, I liked the dark one on the earlier version, forget it's name?

Well, consider yourself lucky you don't know ME very well...just ask Mike about some of our phone conversations back in the late 90s when I was a wanna-be William Randolph Hearst. I'll bet Mike thought he should be charging me for being my therapist after some of those marathon whine sessions on my part! :D

Anyway, I'm sincerely happy you two are so good for each other. As I wrote earlier, nothing wrong with a little more love in the world...even in the wacky weird and wonderful world of ambientism! ;)

Yes, I'll be putting new themes up soon, maybe this weekend.  I decided to remove all but the basic themes from the Forum, even though I had originally transferred them all across, because with all the database updates I was doing last night, every time I'd restore a bunch of settings, it would "break" all the themes except the default and display an error message on every page if you weren't using the default.  So I figured it would avoid problems if we all just lived with this light blue theme for a while.

I'm partial to a darker look myself.

The Forum seems to be up & running just fine, other than the need for more themes which I'll address soon, so I'm going to "un-sticky" this topic and turn it back into a normal topic.

nah...they just don't realize that they have to create a new 'cookie' in IE or what ever browser due to the new IP address, etc....I had to do the same is log back in with my username...
just sometimes, people just don't look up and just start reading with out realizing they are not logged in...

Mike,

Thanks for all of your efforts in putting the new forum together.  It sucks that everything on the old forum was lost and can't be migrated to the new.  There was years of interesting stuff there.  Oh well, what can you do?  Maybe there is a way to allow viewing of the old forum as read-only somehow?  It might not be worth the effort though.

The new forum software looks nifty.  I did have a question though.  Most BB's I visit have dialogs as part of the process when posting a reply or a new topic.  On other boards when inserting an outside link, when you hit the Insert Hyperlink button you get a popup window dialog that steps you through pasting the URL you want to link to and the text you want to show up in the post.  Something like this (http://hydrogencafe.blogspot.com/).  However, with the new Hypnos Forum, when clicking the Insert Hyperlink button you just get something like this: "[url]  [\url]".  The dialogs make things so much easier.  I was just wondering if the new forum software has this as an option?  Just wondering.  Thanks again for all of your hard work.

Rick

Hi Rick-
You're right, there's no "wizard" for typing in URLs or named outside links here.  It's possible there's a plug-in module for some kind of enhancement to the posting process.  I won't be doing much in the way of hot-rodding or adding options on the Forum until things have quieted down here (behind the scenes I mean) with this hypnos.com domain move.  But I appreciate the feature request and it's something I'd like to add if I can find a pre-built module of some sort.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike - When you get back to tweaking the forum you may want to add a nicely obvious top-level link to the main Hypnos site.

That's definitely one thing I'd like to implement.  I used that all the time on the old Forum, click on the "Hypnos" logo at the top of any page and you end up at the front page of www.hypnos.com -- I'll definitely work on that one.  Thanks, Scott.

Regarding THEMES, the "BacknBlack" theme (which was the one I always used prior to the move) has been re-installed and tested, and it's working fine.

THEMES

The "Babylon" theme has been re-installed and briefly tested... seems OK.
