Title: the ultimate 'ambient'?
Post by: DeepR on May 03, 2009, 03:10:44 PM
Here's a piece of Russian choir music by Rachmaninov:

Rachmaninov - Deus Meus (Alla Breve) - 1890 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqKqtB5EvKs#)

Pavel G. Chesnokov - To Thee We Sing

Pavel G. Chesnokov - To Thee We Sing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZjS4s8yi_g#ws)

I don't care for the words and religious meaning. But I listen to all music with an 'ambient ear' so to speak... and I couldn't help notice its distinct ambient qualities. Slowly moving, relaxing, otherworldly harmonies. Wow. In a way, this is the ultimate ambient music. :)

It is  choral ambience at its best, indeed. Try some of the older liturgical Russian Orthodox chants...much more "ambient"  than Rachmaninov!

I know what you mean about this kind of ancient music being the ultimate ambient. Sometimes I listen to this ancient choral music and am transported into zones beyond what normal modern ambient can achieve. One of my favorites is Ensemble Organum's Compostela. The more ancient the source music, the better.

"Do you smell what the Rach is cookin'?"

Love the distinct Russian bass profundo emerging at the 3 min. mark. Excellent piece.

Thought I'd restore the video of the original post. I also added a second piece by Chesnokov, listen to the deep bass in that one!

Little known fact:  Beethoven used synthesizers.

Wow! That Chesnokov piece slayed me. T'was like it was already sampled and pitched down to slow it. Delicious ambience. Thanks.
