Title: What are your plans and goals in 2008?
Post by: mgriffin on January 08, 2008, 11:14:40 AM
I remember that in the old Forum, someone posted an interested topic at the beginning of 2007 about "What are your plans?"

It was mostly geared toward the music-makers here on the Forum, so they could talk about their upcoming projects, but it was also an interesting discussion of people's general plans for the coming year.

Lots in store for Hypnos, which I'll fill in later, but I wanted to kick off this topic and ask:

What are you planning or hoping to do during 2008?

Besides losing 10 pounds, I'm hoping to do a project with M Peck this year.

'Flicker' - Collaboration with massively talented UK based ambient artist 'Achromus' (Michael Stringer)
http://www.myspace.com/achromus (http://www.myspace.com/achromus)

I'm producing it effectively, as I'm reworking Mick's original tracks and adding the 'Igneous touch'.
It will be finished spring 2008. We're both big fans of David Sylvian's 'Gone to Earth' and while it
won't reach the dizzy musical heights of 'GtE', it's a kind of template I'm bearing in mind.

Yes - I love this topic - I'm the culprit for the 2006 and 2007 versions of this thread... :)  really glad you fired up a new one!

Once and for all - I'm buying a new soundcard and recording again.    Recording again has been my plan for about 4 years now (if you could still see the old threads, you'd laugh...)...   This is the year!

Heidi and I have already talked about getting a new soundcard since my Aardvark is tied to Win98 - and I don't feel like trying to get it to work in XP.   I might still use the old computer for a drum machine - we'll see.   I have a goal of writing a few songs this year and maybe, just maybe, getting a release ready to send out as a demo.

We've already moved a large chair out of my studio and half of my bass amp is in next to my synths for the first time in 5 years (the other half of the amp is at my mother-in-laws - we had a great jam session on New Years Eve... :)  it's coming home soon...).   I'm toying with getting a new effects box as a present to myself, and Heidi thinks I should buy a decent guitar.   I'm definitely getting the sound card - we'll see about the rest.

Beyond music my goal is to continue getting healthier and losing weight.   It was quite the weird year for my health last year.   I think I'm on the right track now with regular exercise, eating right, vitamins, and regular doctor visits.

My wife and I have these sort of running resolutions to be...

* physically fit
* financially fit
* mentally fit

I've been working on those three for about 5 months now and things are looking a little better in the world.

Heidi and I plan to hike more - that's the biggie for us.  I'm not an outdoor person, never have been.  We went hiking once last fall and I loved it.   We also bought bikes and I can't wait for the weather to clear up a bit to get out and ride!   I'm riding indoors this winter to hopefully have the muscles built up to actually be able to go a decent distance next year.

Well, I left Shroud of Bereavement to concentrate on my own projects so 2 goals are to have  2 full length releases, one for Darkened Soul and one for Mired In Twilight (which I'll shop around to mike this time ;-) ). Continue learning guitar to eventually add some of it into the music quite possibly (acoustic most likely unless I got electric on the 7 string for some evil drone sounds.....muwhahaha

Lose some weight is another goal, get back into some form of exercising.

2007 sucked as a year with lots of stressful stuff (Kathryn had foot surgery, Onyx died, etc.) so my goal to start getting in shape these past twelve months was, shall we say, jettisoned. Hopefully, this year, I can attack it in earnest. I'd like to start shooting some hoops again over lunch time and finally get back to doing some weight training on the machines. Biking is STILL a goal that I haven't come close to attaining (but watched American Flyers last night as a way to start motivating myself). I also am in desperate need of FINANCIAL health...used way too many credit cards the last two years. This wil mean a second job for sure, but hey, this is the land of opportunity so there ya go. Finally, of interest here, is to find some way to write more music reviews...with the blog now up and the site resurrected, I just have to find the time and break through this terrible months long writers block that has developed. I want to have ZERO backlog by the end of the year...now THAT'S an ambitious goal.

Oh, and it would be nice to finally paint some rooms too. The front bedroom, kitchen, and my bathroom are looking particularly shabby. I gotta stop watching HGTV and start DOING what I watch instead!

This thread reminds me that I didn't do any of the things I posted last year...   :(    ???

So, maybe a less ambitious list:

1.  Sell my Wisconsin house.  I've moved, and having two mortgages really, really sucks.
2.  Ski at least 75 days, and at least once every month, all year.
3.  Finish final versions of all the unreleased stuff I deem worth finishing, then retire SunDummy.
4.  Finish the two-disk SünDümmy set, a mix of heavy, guitar-based stuff that never fit in the SunDummy mellow-drone mold.
5.  Ride a century on the road bike.

To quote Daniel Day Lewis's charecter in The Last of The Mohicans..."Stay Alive!"
The cardiac stress test is in three weeks.  Van Halen and Salmon Rushdie in February.
I think I have a gig next Friday.  I have two discs ready for the copyright registration routine.

New Years Resolution...Obey traffic laws, no more speeding tickets.

wow, 2007 was such a phenomenal year for me it will be hard to top it.
the only things on my plate as "must do" are my ongoing marriage counseling with linda - it is strengthening our partnership immensely - and i have to lower my cholesterol via my diet. the statens work but the side affects are not acceptable.
musically i have 3 or 4 discs ready for release and a couple of multiple sets, too. i am biding my time and doing some qa on them to assure that i release stuff that doesn't suck.

I want to clean up my studio, finally paint my modular cabinets and put my modular back together so I can use it again. Then, I can post a photo of my studio to the forum. That is, if I can figure out how to do it. ( Mike, get ready for a bunch of stupid questions). I want to post some music for forumites to hear and critique. It has been so long since I have exposed any of my music for review by my peers. It is way overdue. I need to get more excercise. I sit on my butt everyday driving 150+ miles a day. Lose about 5-6 pounds and eat better. Appreciate life and enjoy my family and friends more, because that's what it's all about.  ;D     harry D

I just received the information that i will get 900€
for my 3 Month internship. Was totally surprised by
this fact because i didnt thought about getting
payed for it. So the year will start with a "huge"
amount of money. 900€ is a "huge" amount
for a student like me ;)

Will invest a bit into new releases for my label.
and save the rest for the future.

Hmm...

Lose weight.

Be more consistent, schedule-wise, with the Hypnagogue site.

Write another full-length play and get it on stage.

More theater productions for my other two full-lengths, preferably in places I want to visit. :-)

More productions all around.

And writing, writing, writing, more writing.

I started this topic, and intended to post some of my own plans and goals, but never got around to it.  So then, an incomplete list, with both Hypnos stuff and personal stuff.  During 2008 I hope to:

> release at least one new Hypnos (or HSS or Binary or other related) project per month
> release more new projects total in 2008 than any prior year
> finish the Binary compilation
> finish the Echoes of Polyhymnia compilation (though Lena will be doing almost all the work)
> launch the Binary Explorer Series sub-label (limited edition version of Binary)
> take Binary in more of a minimal techno, IDM, modern electronica, glitch direction with several new releases
> release our first video DVD "Vapors and Magnetism" and plan several more
> expand the Hypnos store's list of offerings by at least double
> launch our new offshoot store by mid-year -- to be called SoundSwim
> start selling downloadable products including FLAC and MP3
> expand the distribution of Hypnos and associated labels into some new outlets
> record some new music with my wife
> read The Silmarillion finally
> go skiing at least a few more times than I did in 2007
> complete a "mountain century" (100 mile mountain bike trail race) or at least a half-century
> feel (and look) better and healthier than at any time since I was 25

Heh heh... I've been intending to read The Silmarillion for more than 25 years so I figure, this is a good time to do it.  Right now i'm listening to the full, unabridged audiobook versions of Lord of the Rings, and think that will be a good lead-in to reading The Silmarillion, and then Children of Hurin.

I was going to add a bunch of other stuff to my list, but figured I wouldn't include each and every upcoming Hypnos & Binary release as individual plans and goals.  Those are already listed on the "Upcoming Releases" list, so I left them off here.

I've read the Silmarillion 2 or 3 times, but it's been at least a decade since I last tackled it.   It's rough going at the beginning, but starts to get a bit more coherent the further you get into it.   It's intended to somewhat be the ancient history and myths surrounding middle earth - so part of the writing that way is intentional (and partially just due to being unfinished...).

I just started Children of Hurin.

(ummm - not that I normally get a Valentine's Day present (at least something that expensive!).. but she's giving me a bit of a kick start to get back in the studio and start writing again.   :) )

I have had a cold all week.  I was just begining to feel better.  I didn't know I'd be playing out side last night.  Frozen fingers, stuffy head, ill-prepared.  It was like painting blindfolded.  First gig since the mid 1990's, first gig as Oenyaw.  One electical outlet, one extension chord, one surge protector to plug my amp and surge protector for all of my effects.  Scary.  Brought back many memories.

All-in-all, a very pleasurable experience.  I love playing live, and can't wait to do it again. :)

Get the Infraction vinyl series in full swing
Improve the house, sell the house, & get another that comfortably fits my wife and I and our little 8 mo. old girl
Start running again
Take an overdue vacation outside of Ohio.  3 years of anesthesia school with little time off, has made me extremely dull.  That's a fact.

Get caught up on the backlog of things to listen to.

I think that's it for now - seems semi-achievable.

There has been the separation of Databoem and DataObscura on the horizon for me. Taking a while still because Dennis in Holland doesn't have his new Databloem store ready. I'm pleased with my new Dataobscura / Blue oasis site though.

Looking to put some great releases out this year. A new Kwook is almost ready, and a new Nunc Stans is just around the corner ... its full of vast frozen expanses. Great stuff.

I will start work on a new Lammergeyer project very soon.

I've been moving my studio into a nice bright big room ... slowed everything down for me, but is now looking super functional.

Planning to do a number of house renovations in the spring ... looking forwad to it. I'm a practical guy.

And planning a big european trip in early summer. We live in Canada, but my wife was brought up in Germany, and I'm English. So always great to go back when we can.

That's what comes to mind.

1. Finish reading Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles (2nd read-through...12 years after first reading them. hehe)
2. Get a track released on a compilation album.
3. Pay off my last 2 credit cards.

All completely doable...as long as I stay focused.  :)

An on-going what to do this year list.  It's not the list, it's how you work it, right?

1:  Still no speeding tickets.  I paid the on from December, now I have to take a driving class.

2:  The stress test.  They found a blip, so they did a second one with nuclear imaging.  I had no problems with the test, didn't even breath heavily.  The blip is still there(something is different wht the BPM increases).  I'll find out more on 2/18.  I did get really sick from the isotope marker they injected in my blood stream.  I don't see how anyone can take chem/radiation.  I have an entirely new respect for any one on that treatment.

3:  Working on MP3 disc #9.

Get a job. The rest I will think about once I can pay the bills. :(

Goal number one for 2008 has been achieved I am happy to say. I was officially hired today by my old alma mater. I am now a "recording technician" for the music department at UCLA. What that means is I am one of two guys who records all the concerts and recitals that occur in the music building.  :) Its only part-time but I found out that I might be able to make up extra hours by doing audio work for other departments, and their is the possibility that it might become full-time in the future. Another very rare bonus these days is it comes with full benefits.

Thanks to everyone who wished me well, and also to those who helped me out last December by taking some of my gear off my hands when I really needed the help.

Now, I think the next step is to start losing some weight.  ;D

Well done, Loren. I'm sure the stress level has dropped appreciably for you. Also glad it's at least tangentially involved with music. At 53, I live in mortal fear of ever losing a job again. Hopefully, I am indispensible enough here at Hamline University that I can just stay in my little cube and get to 65 (omigod...that's less than 15 years away!).

Loren, do stay away from those UCLA cheerleaders, though! Unless they like ambient music, of course! :o

Belated congrats, Loren!  I seem to be headed in a different direction this year.  After twelve years slogging away at the same law firm, I've decided (for reasons probably best kept to myself) that I've had enough at the end of this month.  This change was probably long overdue, but I plan to take a bit of time off before moving into something else.  It's actually a pretty liberating feeling.  We'll see how it goes.

As a stay-at-home Dad, my first job is to get back up to speed on quadratic equations so I can stay a step ahead of my son on his homework.  And keep the van running so I can continue to get both my kids to karate, scouts, music lessons, camps, theater programs, after school class help, etc.  Maybe continue finding a little time to volunteer at the handicapped riding center (actually, the only place I get to talk to other adults!)

Find spare time to listen to music (and some NPR).  Get back into long walks/hikes (hurt my foot pretty bad in 2006).  Bring my MP3 player and kill two birds with one stone!  ;D

Still be here to post a slightly updated version of this list in 2009.

Getting the money together for two more to be put on CDBaby.

I have also finished three discs (MP3, 5-6 hours each, of course).
"A Party of One at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe"  16 tracks, all "live" one track no overdubbed things.
"A Line From A Pale Blue Dot"  a 6 hour piece
"Oenyaw's Comedy Divine"  13 tracks, a whimsical musical based on Dante's "Inferno"
I'll post more when I have the strength.
