Title: Mystified Thread
Post by: mystified on November 26, 2009, 04:32:09 PM
I hope this is not premature, but it is true and somewhat public now that mystified will be releasing a cdr on HSS very soon (as early as 12/2009).

I hope people will give the cdr a chance-- I found myself actually listening to it here in the studio a lot, which is not very common for me, as it is an easy listen and has lots of open space.

It will be called "Primal Mystification".

Essentially the music combines textured and tuned drone backgrounds with rhythms and sparse melodic touches. The first piece has a little of a "Roach"-ian feel, if I dare to say. The others are less simple to define, but I think people will like them.

Anyway, my project has been around for about 8 years, and not without controversy. Some say I am too prolific, some that I have made too many free releases.

It has always been my philosophy to release the very best on cdr or vinyl, and this I believe is one of those times.

Any questions or comments?

Hi all!

Though some samples will be available on the "Primal Mystification" page (as is usually the case with Hypnos), Mike has granted me the permission to post a special preview mp3. This mp3 is about 2 and a half minutes long-- it contains excerpts from tracks one and three of "Primal Mystification", so you can get an idea of the kind of music featured.

http://www.mystifiedmusic.com/Tracks_One_And_Three_Preview.mp3

I hope you enjoy the preview.

Again, longer previews will soon be available.

Thanks!

"Primal Mystification", a full-length release by mystified, is now available at Hypnos Records, from the Hypnos Secret Sounds sub-label. Free samples, descriptions, and an order link are all here:

http://www.hypnos.com/releases-myst-pm.php (http://www.hypnos.com/releases-myst-pm.php)

"Primal Mystification" emerged from drone sounds, similar to the way we humans emerged from the primordial ooze. Oscillating ambient bell washes were created using field recordings and mystical effect processes, and then simple rhythmic and melodic phrases evolved from the primal material. Sometimes there is a change or development in the rhythmic material, and always there are changes in the drones, behind, as they shift and flow. "Primal Mystification" is a musical union of form and formlessness.

Just a quick note-- the number of future mystified releases, at least releases in the immediate future, is quickly dwindling. There is a collaborative 3" with Nocturnal Emissions due out in early 2010, and a small cassette release in March. There are one or two Mister Vapor releases due out. But my work as a musician is becoming more focussed, so please don't expect to see a ton of material coming out shortly.

I am glad to have had the opportunity to evolve musically, working with a variety of labels. I am not saying "Primal Mystification" will be my last release, but, I will be stepping back quite a bit.

I intend to continue to experiment and grow musically, just to release less material.

Just a few words to the curious and to those who may have followed my work over the last few years.

Indeed. I actually did get some requests once I switched my programming over to "Darkdrone Radio". Darkdrone attracted the attention of some ambient artists and even got me on some mailing lists for promo cds.

It was a lot of fun, but I grew tired of paying the fees to broadcast, so I stopped playing dj a couple of years ago.

I look to the various quality podcasts and entities like Stillstream to carry the torch.

Wethinks that's the way it tends to go. At 18 we were ready to conquer the world and knew everything - and well, we do know more than our Moms. Had to teach one algebra so she could work as a teachers aide. But we digress.

Will be sending hopefully mucho CDs soon!

Winding down with just a few releases in early to mid 2010, then much less thereafter.

2 are on cassette, on a German label called Licht Und Stahl, due out March or so.

1 is a collaborative 3" cdr featuring Nocturnal Emissions due out mid-January. This has an actual original piece by Noc. E.-- most excellent.

Finally, there will be an actual pressed cd coming out, though this has not been officially announced, so I can't give more info.. It is not Hypnos, that I can say, and will come out in Spring.

Otherwise, not much is on the horizon-- fans of Mister Vapor might enjoy the cdr coming out on Eg0Cide Records in a few weeks. . . "Songs Of The Deep Woods".

I don't mean to neglect fans, but I will be digging in for more polished, rarer releases.

Ahem, and there is an Austere "demix" of a Mister Vapor track that will be appearing somewhere in the coming year. All the goodness of Mister Mystified's work, completely turned to shite by us. But as is our way, we'll put it out into the world nonetheless. 1/2 ;)

Thanks to Thomas for letting have a go at demixing musick of his. We are truly honoured.

P.S. The Mac 128 (if we trainspotted that photo correctly) was an awesome beast - a computer that you could use for 10-15 years without buying a new one! One of us used them in high school, the other was still helping grad students use them in the early '90's. Great machines!

Title: Re: Mystified Thread
Post by: mystified on January 16, 2010, 06:43:03 AM
"Songs Of The Deep Woods" by Mister Vapor is out. So that leaves a collaboration with Nocturnal Emissions ("Engine Room Glow") due out very soon, and then a couple of cassette releases due out in March through Licht und Stahl.

There MAY be a pressed cd released later in 2010, but it is still in the works and there is some contention about it. We shall see.

And, finally, there are some collaborations-- one or two-- with people this board would recognize, at varying stages of completion.

That may sound like a lot, but for me, after 2009, it is totally like taking a vacation. And I don't mean to brag.

I am negotiating right now with label "First Fallen Star" over my first professionally printed cd. It will be called "Passing Through The Outer Gates". It's a commission of sorts-- I have been asked to sonically explore my own death and afterlife, according to my personal beliefs.

It's been an interesting journey as a musician, sometimes a little campy, other times quite profound, if I may say that.

The cd should be out in mid-2010:

"Passing Through The Outer Gates" has been completed and Frederic Arbour at Cyclic Law has mastered the 8 tracks. I am happy with it. The label, "First Fallen Star", is trying to assemble visual art for the cd cover.

This is my first "real" cd, so I am taking things pretty seriously.

I am not sure when this will be released. Probably mid-2010.

That dvd is ready-- 9 music videos. One is a slide show, the other 8 are animated. Video artists include myself, C.P. McDill, and Johan Nederpel. The master is en-route to a French label. They are going to take a gander, and possibly release the dvd, in PAL or NTSC by demand. If so, should come out Autumn of 2010.

OUT NOW- "A Pale But Lasting Hope"-- mystified mastered by Robert Rich

Pieces range from the lively and effervescent to the dark and droney. Running throughout the release is the notion of wide-open spaces - spaces as dictated by sound, as described by tone clusters and layered sounds.

Note: To download the album, listeners must belong to the Magnatune music service. Magnatune is a friendly, virus-free catalog of over 10000 songs, of all genres, specially selected for digital release. The service works by subscription– $15 gets you unlimited downloads from the catalog for 1 month. Mystified Remixes Celer's "Dying Star"-- Full Free Release

Apart from writing drone pieces of his own, Mystified, known to some as Thomas Park, has a weakness for deconstructing works he likes and turning them to something new. Thus it comes with little surprise that for his first album on Petcord, he picked up several sounds he had borrowed from Celer's Dying Star CD from 2008 (of course with their permission) and created an epic drone piece of it. Dying Star Remix transfers the image of a life in seclusion and there is a lot of tension building up during the first minutes until the piece finally unfolds its entire variety of timbres. I would not be too surprised if Mystified's interpretation of Dying Star wound up as a soundtrack to some kind of space odyssey involving the struggle of surviving in the violent universe that surrounds us.

"Dying Star" is remixed with the permission of Will Long of Celer.

Just a few moments from the Shane Morris / Mystified cd coming out in 2012 on Spotted Peccary / Lotuspike. This is part of the second track. It showcases the great job of mastering that Ben Cox did. Keep your ear to the ground, this will be a great release!

As the video mentions it is an homage to Jules Verne and others from

"Fantastic Journey" Out On DataObscura

Fantastic Journey is an homage to writers such as Jules Verne,  H. G. Wells, and other pioneers from the early age of science fantasy.

Composed and performed using various samples, synthesisers, and field recordings by Anthony Paul Kerby (TCR) and Thomas Park (Mystified). It could perhaps be called exploratory electro-ambient music.

Emergence Now Available

Shane Morris & Mystified are back with Emergence, the stunning second installment to their primordial three-part “Inspired Evolution” soundscape project. This natural sequel to Epoch, their lush first release, continues the artist’s bold effort to create a sonic environment that evokes prehistoric places and atmospheres, this time focused on the age when mammals arose and began to flourish on planet Earth. Mystified’s Thomas Park explains, “Emergence takes Epoch further. Now more direct predecessors to Man are emerging on the planet; early mammals surviving in diverse primal ecosystems. Each track has a title and theme that corresponds to a different ancient location or environment.”

The sound of Emergence is vital yet primal; ambient atmospheric yet powerfully evocative. Broad, sweeping acoustic and electronic tones are punctuated with treated percussive sounds such as wooden sticks, shakers and gongs. There are shadows of its predecessor, Epoch, with trombone notes and drones, which are supported by a variety of acoustic winds and other organic instrument drones. However, Emergence reflects the evolutionary turn from giant reptiles to mammals by adding some new sounds to the mix. Shane Morris elaborates, “Epoch used all acoustic sounds to create its ancient soundscape, but for this next chapter we relied a little more heavily on electronics, including digital synthesizers to reflect the shifting evolution.”

With Emergence, Shane Morris & Mystified once again create tremendously immersive soundworlds that are shrouded in mystery and filled with life. Each track an opening into the distant past, Emergence presents a vigorous and powerful sonic portrayal of prehistoric Earth.

Thanks kindly, folks!

Some reviews have begun rolling in:

". . .makes up some heavenly ambient music. But unlike the good ol' drone music, which is usually a straight line, the electronics follow the patterns created by the acoustic playing, so it bounces back and forth, slow, minimal yet majestically. . . Good, solid, dark atmospheric music with a gentle touch of acoustics."- Vital Weekly, June 2013

"What I got here is the second installment of the "Inspired Evolution" , a triple concept-release about prehistoric time and evolution. . . The five lengthy and cinematic soundscapes sound most vibrant and alive, and –compared to 'Epoch'- they are also more accessible and friendly to the ears. Nonetheless, these deep dronescapes without the faintest trace of any melody are spiced with dense textures and poignant environmental noises/clicks, entering fascinating mysterious realms before the minds eye. . . All in all, this quality outcome makes me eagerly looking forward to the culmination of this prehistoric sound stage."-- Sonic Immersion, June 2013

Here is an "Emergence" Review From The Amazon Release Page.

Challenging and cerebral but enjoyable ambient music

June 20, 2013

Review By R. Lee

"I've been listening to Emergence for about a week. This is a follow up to the same duo's earlier release, Epoch, on the same label. The five tracks here are atmospheric tone poems in the ambient genre. However, what is of interest here is in part what is absent. No empty New-Ageisms, keyboard presets, or magic crystals. Also absent are overly obvious references to biological sounds."

"Instruments, synthesizers, and percussion are mixed together with considerable expertise. With the exception of the percussion sounds, most instruments are difficult to recognize. Most of the sounds contain rich, natural sounding overtones like the sound of wind in a tunnel or the tonic drone of moving bodies of water."

"I would say that this CD is great for listening to in an interesting space or context. I think it would be a great treat to have a CD like this playing in a cafe or restaurant. It rewards repeated listening, and though is ambient in nature, the tracks have a discursive but compelling structure of slowly changing tone clusters and textures. There is a consistent language to the compositional methods; jarring transitions are avoided, dissonance is tolerated but remains atmospheric, individual sounds are presented carefully and reward close listening."

"My associations with this music included Vangelis's classic tone poem "The Creation of the World" and some pieces of Edgar Varese. The use of the long form of the CD makes one think of Thursday Afternoon by Eno."

"The theme of ancient times is pursued in a nicely philosophical fashion. The feelings evoked are not biological sludge, but at least to me, the projection of the mind into spaces and times before humans existed. And while the progression of the two CDs through time is ostensibly about the natural world, there is also a psychological progression occuring, as evidenced by the subtle changes in compositional method."
