Title: Adobe Audition coming to Mac OSX?
Post by: mgriffin on June 04, 2010, 04:05:45 PM
Adobe Audition coming to Mac OSX?  Looks like it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqiyKNoexTE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqiyKNoexTE)

I've complained here over the years that one thing I've never yet found among Mac software to equal its Windows counterpart is a good stereo waveform editor for mastering.  Sound Forge is close to perfect for this, and it's the sole reason I keep a Windows machine in the studio, which I used for ONLY this purpose now that I've stopped using Sony ACID much.

I know, someone will chime in with "What about ___?" and name some sucky, half-assed audio editor for Mac, but we all know there isn't one out there to match Sound Forge.  Audition would be close enough, I think.

This fella's got me thinking of another possibility:

Wavelab's newest version will be available for Mac as well.

Wow, I haven't tried Wavelab in ten years, I think.  I'll have to give that a look.

I'm game, how about Peak Pro 6?  I finally upgraded to it at the end of last year, they finally added pretty much all the things I wanted to see. Maybe I'm just use to how it works since I've been using it now for 13 years or so. We have Wavelab here at work, so far I don't really dig it, but then again we have the cheapest version so maybe I am missing something.

Thanks for the suggestion, Loren.  The last time I tried Peak Pro, I found it no improvement at all over Peak LE.  I just took a look at the new Peak Pro 6 and it looks interesting.

Oops, just saw the price.  Peak Pro 6 XT, $1200.  Yeah, right... no wonder people pirate software.  Oh well, maybe I'll try a demo if they've got one.

If I am not mistaken the difference between Peak Pro and the XT version is XT also includes every plug-in they make for Peak. The Pro only version I think is quite a bit less, lists for $599. Plus they offer cross-grades, educational discounts, and download only versions which save you even more.

I got used to the way Wavelab worked over time, so I like it. I never warmed up to Peak, but like Mike have only used LE.

Loren's right, I check the web store in a hurry and didn't realize I was quoting the "software plus plugins" price at $1200, and the vanilla version of Peak Pro is in fact $600.

There are cross-grades available but no competitive upgrades.  It's been so long since I purchased Sound Forge or Acid or Live or Logic or any of those, I'm not accustomed to paying a fat price like that for a single program.  Jeez, for $400 I got the whole NI Komplete package!

Paul, do you know how soon Wavelab 7 is coming out?

I know it was announced at Musik Messe a few months ago, but that does not mean anything in industry time  ;D

Paul, do you know how soon Wavelab 7 is coming out?

I heard sometime in late fall. So probably the begining of next year.  ;D

Continuing to fire up the old Win XP machine to run Sound Forge is sounding better and better.

Then again there's (maybe) that Adobe Audition that started this topic.

Here is the rather lame video that was used to announce Wavelab 7:

I too am a fan of Adobe Audition (been using it since it was Cool Edit Pro) and Wavelab. Audition is just so simple and quick and since I do a lot of restoration from other mediums, I've often found their built in plugins quite efficient for cleaning up old tape hiss etc. And having the immediate access to a multi-track environment really speeds up my workflow.

I haven't upgraded my version of Wavelab since v.4.0, and quite frankly don't see the need as I basically use it to host other plugins for a mastering environment. All my editing is done in Audition. Both have always been rock solid and are both staples in my home studio.

I saw your comment and before I watched the video thought "what could be so lame about a new software promo?"

Having watched the clip, now, I see you were actually being charitable.  The video is so annoying it made me less likely to consider purchasing the software.

I think that somewhere in the video they mention that it is available for Mac...

Confirmation that Audition is coming to Mac OSX.  Public beta coming at the end of the year.

This looks good!

I've been using Audition (PC) for couple of last years. And I like it.
It has VST support now, easy multi tracking feature.
Audio restoration tools are also useful and powerful.
Very handy is Spectral Display tool for audio manipulation of selected frequency, phase or pan section of track.

Overall - a good successor to Cool Edit Pro. :)

Wavelab 7 is for sale now, at least audiomidi.com has it listed as in stock.  $499 with no upgrade pricing, apparently, let alone competitive upgrade or cross-grade deal.

They do offer a pret decent education discount though. I'll have to give it some consideration later this year.

Just thought I would mention that a free beta of Adobe Audition for OSX is not out. You can download it here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/audition/ (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/audition/)

Also, since Peak was mentioned, BIAS announced Peak 7, with a multi-track addition.

I've used several multi-tracking progs and I keep coming back to Audition.  I find it the most intuitive and easy to use.  I do like Vegas too though.  I have had a few crashes though.  Usually when I'm stopping & starting fast.  Saving often is a good idea with any program though.  Also, it does seem to recover with everything last done in the event it does crash.

This was an exception because Adobe bought up an existing Windows app (what was it... Samplitude?) so they'd have a audio-focused app to bundle with their video-focused stuff like After Effects and Premiere.

Anyway, by now, Adobe sells more Windows software than Mac software.

It was Cool Edit, btw, not Samplitude. I knew it was one of those junky shareware audio editors I used to use before I ponied up for Sound Forge.

Oh yeah.  Duh.  I had been using Cool Edit too.  I'm getting old. Memory not so good.

Isn't it funny, you can create a shareware app with a ridiculous name like "Cool Edit" and end up selling it to Adobe for millions of dollars?

Junky? I guess you are half-joking...
I think Cool Edit was popular because it was a very good software.
No wonder Adobe has bought it and polished it to sell for bug bucks.
As I said before AA offers excellent tools, easy to use.

Yeah, I'm being a smart-ass. Cool Edit was OK software, but I don't know how far back you used it. The earliest versions were really rough.

Samplitude was worse. It functioned OK but might have had the most cluttered interface in software history.

It's easy to make fun of Cool Edit because, well... it's called Cool Edit.  Putting the word "Pro" at the end didn't really make it less silly.

I've used the last versions.
Well, maybe I'm not that sensitive to names, just care what they do.
"Apple"? "Windows"? "Office"? "Opera"?
Pretty funny for me, too.
AA is pretty much based on Cool Edit, extra tools added.
Some people say that they made it worse, too junky. Oh, wait... ;)

Audition is very similar to Cool Edit Pro, though it seems less crash prone when importing 24-bit files, and works very well  as an editor in tandem with a nimble multitrack program like Reaper.

I'm trying out the Audition OSX beta today, creating the second Hypnos podcast (which is a feature on the new Herion CD "Out and About" for those interested).  So far I like it pretty well. It's a little more intuitive than Soundtrack Pro, which is what I usually use for this sort of thing. Definitely nicer looking.
