Yep!  Have to agree with that.  You're a treasure headonist!

Me personally - I've downloaded a lot of netlabel releases, I bought the Enter Calico compilation from Clear Notice, I've traded with some artist for music,  and I've bought a few very non-ambient albums from Amazon's $5 mp3 sales.

I'd never thought I'd buy a cassette again, but this is Ozric, my favorite band. I pretty much collect everything by them.

That's true, especially the Jeff Pearce / Vidna collaboration and Robert Scott Thompson's Silent Shore.

Returning back to this thread's m.o., more pick-ups, from today and the last few days:

- Phonophani Kreken (Rune Grammofon)
- Kenny Wheeler Gnu High (ECM) (used)
- Aidan Baker I Will Always And Forever Hold You In My Heart And Mind (Small Doses)
- Altres Tripping The Dark Fantastic (Multi-Purpose)/ great, obscure Germanic electronix
- Arcanum Man in the Mirror (Manikin)
- M-1 Alternative Aviary (C'est la Mort) / another oldie but goodie dumped and now rebought
- Milieu The Loneliness of Empty Roads (Second Sun) / more dronbient goodness from the Milieu camp
- Iibiis Rooge Pink Hybrid (Winged Sun) / "nu-age" freeform electronics a la Emeralds/Dolphins into the Future
- Sula Bassana Kosmonauts (Sulatron)
- Robert Schroeder Cream (Spheric)
- Rudiger Lorenz Tropica (Syncord) / one of the lost pieces in the Lorenz puzzle, finally found
- NASA Remembering the Future (Ninthwave) / 'synthpop' a la classic New Musik

It's pretty cool that you know Sula Bassana. I met him once in Germany, he was a really cool guy. We went to a festival together in Hannover with lots of psychedelic bands.

I like all his work both solo & in collaboration, but admit I prefer his more full-on "electronic" projects to his space rock excursions. Now...how to get him over here to this side of the pond to do his thing live @ OTP... :)

Schicke Fuhrs and Frohling-"Ticket to Everywhere" (Cherry Red reissue).  Rush meets Klaus Schulze, sort of.  Very cool 70's prog rock. I need to pick up the two preceding albums, Symphonic Pictures and Sunburst, also recently reissued.

I picked up all 3 SFF reissues as well a few months back. The irony is, again, I used to have that Complete SFF Recordings boxset The Laser's Edge released years ago, but dumped it in a major purge of prog many moons ago...now they've been reacquired. Aural tastes are like any other tactile tastes: sometimes you go into periods where you can't stand certain foods, then suddenly you like them, for no discernible reason. I've been re-evaluating certain strains of 'prog' the past few years, buying (or re-buying) some of it in varying degrees; there exists many criteria regarding this resurgent interest, most of it having to do with instrumentation & packaging (such as the 40th anniversary King Crimson issues, despite the fact I own the 30th anniv. editions), but I'm pretty selective—it doesn't *all* make it (back) to the shelves.

Speaking of prog/reissues, Esoteric, Cherry Red's reissue sub-label, does a masterful job with their clutch of releases, doing sterling work reissuing such items as Soft Machine's later period work, the aforementioned SFF, Flash, Camel, and many others. The Softs material in particular sounds & looks exceptionally good, and is highly recommended.

And here's further augmentation of the 'master' purchase list, just bought:

- Uwe Bauch Century City & Eclipse / two EM space music/sequencer releases by obscure artist Bauch

- Francesco Buccheri Hand-Made / eBay acquisition by supposedly electronic/sympho-prog artist, again, obscure, little-known, but cheap enough to give a shot

- Kevin Dunn No Great Lost: Songs 1979-1985 / Was surprised & excited to find this yesterday...CD issue of marginal no-wave/New York multi-instrumentalist's work, including the complete 'lost' album The Judgement of Paris by Kevin Dunn & the Regiment of Women (which I still have on LP), plus additional tracks...strange, twisted downtown pop, all self-produced, with psuedo-Wire-esque guitars, off-kilter synths/electronics, tinny drum machines, superb lyrics...pretty wacked-out & still cool after all these years

- Chris Snidow Number of Days & From the Foundation... / I remember Snidow's work from the "new age" wastelands of the early 90s, and had written it off, but time has been kind to it: sound samples revealed some nice, O'Hearn-esque textures and otherwise there, so Amazon coughed up some very cheap copies of each

Next... :)

I did the same thing with my Laser's Edge copy of the Complete SFF Recordings.  Found a used copy on what I think was the band's own label several years later.  Good to hear that they're being made avaialbale again.  I think the first two (Symphonic Pictures and Surburst) are far superior to the third one (Ticket to Everywhere).  The board player and guitarist of SFF also released a very fine album in 1980 called "Ammerland" which I think has also been reissued.  Interesting that Zappa was originally slated to produce their 1st album.

Symphonic Pictures has some of best use of mellotron this side of Edgar Froese's Epsilon in Malaysian Pale.

One of them is, of course, also known as Eluvium.

More just bought:

- The Buzzcocks Love Bites
- The Buzzcocks Another Music in a Different Kitchen
- The Buzzcocks A Different Kind of Tension

All the above new 2 CD reissues/remasters, all sounding wonderful, the first now, er, buzzing, through the OTP environs splendidly, rekindling the (s)punk air of 1977 all over again...now if only someone would reissue Pete Shelley's early electronic LP Sky Yen (done post-Buzzcocks but pre- the brilliant synthpop initiations of Homosapien) on CD things'd be quite right indeed.

- OMD History of Modern / Pretty good reunion disc, featuring the original McCluskey/Humphreys team, some truly superb songs amid a few later-period blah-rock pieces a la The Pacific Age, but overall a good return to form that dispels notions of 'cash-in': they're not necessarily saying anything new, but it's being restated well enough (much like the recent new Devo, a more conclusively satisfying record).

- db Analogue / As noted in another thread, new solo album from Node member, highly anticipated.

- Khan Space Shanty
- Happy the Man Happy the Man
(first album)

Continuing my recent prog kick & rebuying spree, the above two classic discs reacquired, both excellent. (Note to self: don't be so quick on the trade-in trigger!)

Oh yes, those Concert Silence discs are indeed worthy slabs of deepcore ambience, far better than the work of parent band Eluvium, who I find (I know I'm in the minority) utterly dull as dishwater...oh well...

Now have all the SFF.  Ammerland (minus drummer Schicke) is awesome, lives up to its glowing reviews online.  Symphonic Pictures is good but I don't know about being one of the best mellotron albums.  "In the Court" by KC is still hard to beat.  Or classic Moody Blues or...

Travis & Fripp-Live at Conventry Cathedral.  Clarinet and flutes are a strange mix with Fripp's soundscapes, but on this live disc it works pretty well.

David Sylvian-Sleepwalkers.  Compilation of his "late" period stuff. Some real gems here, and overall flows nicely.  Much better than "Manafon."

Peter Gabriel-Plays Live highlights (the best remaster of this incredible live album, in fact possibly the best live album in history, but cutting four essential tracks to facilitate a single disc is annoying).  Also Birdy and Security remasters.

The Smiths-The Sounds of The Smiths (deluxe 2-disc). Probably the best comp. available of this excellent band, even if you don't like Morrissey you have to admit these guys were great musicians!

Felt-Stains on a Decade compilation.  Amazing UK cult band, highly underrated.

Roxy Music-Flesh+Blood.  Comes close but doesn't beat their masterpiece "Avalon."

That's a very cool album (though I'd vote for Live at Leeds as best live album).  Which tracks were cut?

Tracks left off Plays Live highlights were Rhythm of the Heat, Not One of Us, Intruder, and On the Air.  All the tracks on Plays Live are amazing and blow the studio versions away.  I would have personally chosen to replace No Self Control, I Don't Remember, and Family and the Fishing Net (the somewhat darker/stranger tracks, along with Intruder) with Rhythm of the Heat (absolutely phenomenal opening track to the album, gives me goosebumps EVERY time), Not One of Us and On the Air, but guess PG had his reasons.

Roedelius-"Der Ohren Spiegel" (Multimood). Got this for $4.  I like his early 90's stuff.  Psychoactive classical electro-ambient.

- V/A Wired Thoughts (Entropy) - just discovered this amazing 3-CD (*not* CDR) compilation, with many of the usual suspects (Atheus, Grit, Gabriel Le Mar) and others inna definite Echocord/dubbeetekkno vein...quite anticipated.

- AUN Black Pyramid (Cyclic Law) - review copy en route...quite engrossing darkdrone outfit (individual?) who have already released a number of solid discs.

- Klaus Schulze La Vie Electronique 8 - latest edition...2 more left!

- David First 'Resolver' & 'The Good Book's...' - 80s drone artist who just had a 3-disc set (on my list) released on Phill Niblock's XI label...these are 2 very OOP & obscure early discs.

Two long-desired items on my 'want list' acquired today, virtually impossible to come by:

- Space Machine Cosmos From Diode Ladder Filter & 2 - Have loved noisemonger Masonna's kosmische courier side project for years but could only enjoy 3 (the only one released domestically), and had been searching for the earlier sides, now en route. :)

And this:

- Pleq Sound of Rebirth - preordered Pleq's newie yesterday; that collab w/Segue on Databloem is in my sights as well, once it's available domestically.

Create-From Earth to Mars.  His second album, on Groove.  Very good.

Roach/Metcalf/Khalsa-Dream Tracker.  Quite a bit better than I expected.  A solid tribal ambient release, nice to hear Roach in tribal mode again.

Create-From Earth to Mars.  His second album, on Groove.  Very good.

Roach/Metcalf/Khalsa-Dream Tracker.  Quite a bit better than I expected.  A solid tribal ambient release, nice to hear Roach in tribal mode again.

That Create is a good one—I recently acquired Biospherical Imagery, which is excellent (& completes the Create catalog for me)...Steve Humphries does a particularly good take on tried-and-true Berlin School modes. Dream Tracker also rocks the foundations nicely, as does the recent Nightbloom, every bit as forest-thick & rhythmically diverse.

Just bought in the last day or so (all CD):

- Anders Ilar Stories of Old & Yard DFPRMX • superb new IDM/dubtechno on the YardRecs label. I love Ilar's work, so word of a newie from him was most welcome.
- False Mirror Derelict World (Malignant) & Topografia Genius Loci (Greytone) • as per my note in the F.M. thread...also picked up the Topografia, whose samples of dark-ambient pricked up me ears.
- Stanislav Vdovin Made Of Cloth And Feather (Occasion Records) • little-known Russian artist doing dub atmospherica inna Bvdub/Echocord vein.
- Entheogenic Flight of the Urubus
- Denzel & Huhn Paraport
- The Tivoli vs. Cabaret Voltaire S/T • quite curious about this one, as the Cabs register in a big way around these parts (and have for over 30 years), w/Kirk (the one remaining member) lending his stalwart mixing skills to (de)constructing indie band The Tivoli
- Polska 2nd Rate (Subtle Audio) • new Brit d'n'b, akin to the Bukem style
- Promisk Evolution of Light (Absolute Ambient) • not as spacey/trippy as previous A.A. releases, but samples won me over.
- The Orb w/David Gilmour Metallic Sphere • 'nuf said. :)

Reissues:

- David Bowie Station to Station (3 CD box) • decided to spring for this one...would be nice if the powers-that-be gave Low & Lodger the same treatment.
- Ozric Tentacles Erpland (CD/DVD reissue) • another impulse buy...the packaging & extra DVD sold it, particularly as I'm a pretty die-hard Ozrics enthusiast (still keeping the original CD).
- Miles Davis Bitches Brew 40th Anniversary CD/DVD (Legacy Edition) • already own the (supposedly) Complete Bitches Brew box, but, again, this has a rare DVD performance that pretty much justifies price of admission.

Also attended the Subconscious Records Beyond Festival last week (not a particularly good series of performances), but did grab the Beyond the Vault box, which contains all 7 new Subconscious releases, incl. Download, Plateau, Djoto, Otto von Schirach, Bananasloth, etc...

Nightbloom also surprised me and exceeded my expectations.  Roach fans should not pass on either this or Dream Tracker....

Van Halen-first five albums (remaster CD's).  Forget "Jump" and VanHagar, these dudes were the real deal.  Who rocks as hard as classic VH nowadays?? Not many, if at all.

Les Claypool-Live @ GAMH, San Francisco, Vol.2: great live cover of the entire "Animals" album by Pink Floyd.  Sweet!

A few things from Aquarius Records in SF:

Inside-Celestial Telepathy. 3" CDR, 20 min. space guitar drone, with more emphasis on the "space."  Similar to the Viridian Sun sound.

Expo 70-Animism (full-length CD), Psychic Funeral (two 3" CDR's). Yet more space guitar drone, using guitar, Roland synth, gongs, Moog.  Harkens from a Krautrock point of view (Ashra, T.Dream influences evident). Neat packaging.

From Princeton Record Exchange, yesterday:

- Tangerine Dream Phaedra Revisited 35th Anniversary Edition & Views from a Red Train (Purple Pyramid) • 'used' (though sealed) and cheap, figured why not, more out of curiosity than anything else...Train isn't bad, will have to see if Froese's 'remix' of Phaedra is worth a damn.
- Trey Gunn Untune the Sky (Inside Out) (CD & DVD) • used
- The Buggles Adventures in Modern Recording (reissue) • already had the original Japanese-only Jimco version (so much for the sticker's claim of "1st time on CD") but this one is remastered w/alot of extra tracks; their underrated 2nd & final album.
- Edward Ka-Spel Red Letters (Soleilmoon) • EkS's work as a solo artist seems to continually outshine his exploits with parent band LPD, and this one's no exception...true, his music is something of an acquired taste, but when he's on, it clicks, and his compositions always reveal a devilishly fertile imagination at work.
- 23 Skidoo Just Like Everybody (LTM reissue) • have dug these gents since their very beginnings in the post-punk aftermath of the early 80s, when they were aligned with early CabVolt, Chakk, A Certain Ratio, etc.; this comp was the only CD (re)issue I didn't have...extra tracks as well.

On order/en route:

- Axxess Fusion (Spheric)
- Pleq & Segue Seed (Databloem)
- Rainbow Serpent & Isgaard Stranger (Manikin)
- Mathew Jonson Agents of Time (Wagon Repair)
- Mooch Train Klang (Ambientlive)
- Xan Alexander Quantum Waves (Ambientlive) • new solo from Omega Syndicate member

Michael William Gilbert Moving Pictures

Back in the '80s, I had the cheek to complain to Gilbert that he was using an extended sample of Popol Vuh's Aguirre (one of my favorite PV releases) without any attribution.  He claimed that he received the tape from someone else, and had no idea who it was.  It wasn't a bad release, as I remember, though I eventually sold it.

Yesterday:
Brian Eno-Small Craft on a Milk Sea.  I knew it would be disappointing but bought it anyway.  I could do without the noisy techno-freakout pieces, but there are some nice tracks here.  Still, the Eno of 2010 is quite a different beast to his classic period.

Today:
Terje Rypdal-Chaser, To Be Continued, Eos.  Incredible guitarist, great label (ECM).

"Half-Gifts": Tribute to Cocteau Twins-this was worth $4.99 for the several excellent tracks, although with most tribute albums by unknown bands there are always some pretty cheesy cover versions that sound like elevator muzak interpretations.  But overall this one was quite tasty.  I also liked the Dead Can Dance tribute on Projekt, with mostly very good cover versions.

Celer-Pockets of Wheat
Janek Shaefer-Extended Play
Eberhard Weber-Colours 3-CD Box
AC/DC-Volts

That Celer is excellent, as is pretty much anything they do/have done. Ditto that Weber box - absolutely classic ECM material, some of which has not been previously released on disc. I do have some problems with the packaging, as ECM has chosen to keep with its love of black & white imagery, and didn't reproduce the original LP/release sleeves from those Webers. Still, a good set to own.

Some of me own recent purchases, en route or acquired via retail:

Llunstorcarnay (Seren Ffordd and Gliese 614) 'Lament of a Forgotten God'
Mathias Grassow 'Highlights 1'
Mathias Grassow 'Highlights 2'
Mathias Grassow 'Highlights 3'
Peter Challoner - first five releases, via Ambientlive.com
Gene Newton 'Eternity'
Capricornus 'Halation'
Deborah Martin/Mark Rownd 'Convergence'
Maxmillion Dunbar 'Cool Water'
Christopher Rau 'Asper Clouds'
Spiritchaser '1440'
Zero Degree 'Probe'
Zero Degree 'Zero Degree' (Box)
Scott Fitzgerald 'Northern Lights'
Jon Appleton 'Music for Synclavier and Other Digital Systems'
Namlook/Montana 'Labyrinth'
SNFKN 'Sea Bed'
John Ellis 'Our Internal Monologue' & 'Das Geheimnis Des Golem'

About to go into Manhattan tonight to also buy the new Supersilent, '10' (Rune Grammofon), compilation on Funf Records, new John Foxx, Traversable Wormholes, and whatever else comes up... :)

It's called "D.N.A." - info here:

Re: Weber box set

I agree, each of the slipcases should have had full-color artwork for each album instead of the big black on white print.  My only complaint about this release.

I agree, too, that the lack of color in the Weber box set was a disappointment, though the remastering of the recordings was excellent.  Ironic that Weber's band was called Colours.  I still have the LPs containing the original artwork (another good reason to hang on to my vinyl).

Recently I've been enjoying To Rococo Rot's Speculation, their best in quite a while.

Two major acquisitions this weekend:

Merzbow Merzbient (Soleilmoon) - 12 CD box set
Absolute Body Control Tapes 81-89 (Daft) - 5 CD box

No chance to play the Merzbow box yet (the ABC is en route)...I admit I picked up this new 'Merzbox' ;) out of curiousity, as the idea of 'ambient Merzbow' (talk about an oxymoron) piqued my interest. Earlier listening to samples revealed that the box is not as ambient you might think — this is still, indeed, Merzbow, after all — but there does seem to be at least a mitigation of his usual noise assaults. The pieces were scattered over many years (80s-early 90s) and many tapes; as I'm not exactly what you'd call a Merzbow enthusiast (I have maybe 3 discs, a few of which are collabs), I'm hoping this collection will reveal a hitherto unseen side of his character...perhaps a more approachable side...?

Absolute Body Control was Dirk Ivens' first group; he later went on to form Klinik, one of the prime Belgian EBM outfits. ABC created what is now termed 'cold wave': minimal synth/rhythm box pieces with detached vocals and eerie atmospheres, sort of a reductionist electro, with echoes of early Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide, D.A.F., etc. ABC still sounds damn good, even by today's standards, and this new box set is certainly of historical (as well as sonic) note, presaging what is again a 'mini-movement' (small but persistent) in contemporary electronica...what goes around, comes around / everything old is new again, etc., etc. :)

Further snags:

Amongst Myselves Fragments
Analogue Kid Live Science
A Split-Second The Parallax View EP
(remixes)
Asura Life2
Bobby Previte Dull Bang Gushing Sound Human Shriek
(early recording, all electronic)
Boreal Taiga Isopectic Isotac
Daren Keck 7 Years Under
John Ellis Destination Everywhere & Shock of Contact
Galactic Anthems 3 discs
Phil Miller Digging In & Split Seconds
(used to own these, dumped them, reacquired)

Yep, is ironic, isn't it?

Also occurred to me that my previous messages above were actually referring to the Arild Andersen box released on ECM, not the Weber, but those observations/criticisms apply to both, as each are produced with similar design aesthetics. I don't have the Weber box, as I already own two of the included discs, but might very well get it anyway, as Yellow Fields isn't particularly easy to come by, and I'm a big ECM nut. Oh, and that Andersen box is superb, and *absolutely* required listening to anyone with the remotest interest in ECM history & avant-jazz-composition.

Namlook/Inoue- 2350 Broadway (AW reissue from the 90's, found used).  I had this already on a CDR but such a great album need this on real pressed CD's.  2-disc set, first released in 1993 (first edition was ltd. to 500 and I've never seen one up close that's how rare it is, then reissued around '96 on Fax's reissue sublabel, then again several years ago on an MP3 CD with the second and third chapters of this project), of some of the most outer space, ethereal stuff EVER done, by these two or ANYONE.  Tetsu's Ambiant Otaku and Organic Cloud always get the most attention, and they are great in their own right, but THIS one is just spectacular and criminally under-rated!  The second 2350 Broadway (also 2-disc) was almost as great, followed by a pretty good 3rd release, and quite disappointing 4th (and I believe final) edition a few years ago.

I'm tired of ignorant rock bands assaulting their audiences with excess volume. I saw KJ in 1981 and it was one of the most irresponsibly loud gigs I've ever seen and I've see and heard plenty. If your music lacks power and authority through the majesty of its content...turn it up to 11 seems to be the motto.
Title: Re: Recent music purchases

LOL...don't you know that if they know they can not play hardly at all, the thing to do is to crank the volume to 11 to drown their lousy playing out so no one will notice their lousy playing:)

I've seen KJ play three times - on the 'Brighter than a Thousands Suns' tour at
Leeds University and on the 'Extremities' and 'Pandemonium' tours at Leeds
Metropolitan University (formerly Leeds poly).

I went to see loads of bands when I was younger and these were three of the most powerful gigs I've ever seen. Geordie
Walker is a hugely under-rated and very powerful guitar player and of course, all of the KJ
incarnations can play, they're not jazz-funk musos, but they certainly know what they're doing.

I've seen Led Zeppelin and many other great bands with great instrumentalists but the volume is so often inexcusable. The Buzzcocks were the worst. Great show...but even hearing protection failed several people that night. Most rock soundmen are deaf judging by the way they push the upper-mids at concerts. I will say that Prince and Roxy Music knew how to get the volume and live mix right...

KJ's volume in 1981 was not OK! If you listen to those first two LPs at comfortable volume you can still get the dense quality without tinnitus!
Title: Re: Recent music purchases
Post by: drone on on December 05, 2010, 03:56:30 AM
Well, I certainly wouldn't say KJ's music lacks power and authority.  They like to play loud (and I like to listen to them loud)--doesn't bother me one bit.  So the reasoning that only bands with little talent play loud falls on "deaf" ears here.  I will admit the worst bands I ever saw live were opening acts with absolutely no talent for writing a song, singing, or playing an instrument, which was even worse when they played it loud.  Had it been played quietly it still would've been awful.

Man, don't even know where to start in posting new purchases lately; returned from San Fran about 2 weeks ago with at least 80, 85 discs, a couple box sets, etc., all from a splendid weekend haunting both Amoebas, Aquarius, Rasputin's, etc. Few fellow colleagues/friends seem to enjoy/want/have need to physically "record shop" at brick-and-mortars anymore, but it remains a passion of mine and often a sanctuary (if not a reminder of better times past) from life's many less enthralling daily rigors.

However, items en route are as follows (but a brief smattering thereof):

- ALX 'Lying At The Bass Of The Spine'
- Arti & Mestieri 'First Live in Japan'
- Asymmetric 'From Nowhere Came'
- Belbury Poly 'Farmer's Angle'
- Bill Sharpe/Gary Numan 'self-titled' (80s collab reissued on disc)
- Circular 'Cycles Of Remembrance'
- Create 'We Live By the Machines'
- Delayscape 'Morse Disco'
- DFA 'Work in Progress Live'
- Dieter Ettlinger 'A.I. Ambient Intelligence'
- Eberhard Weber 'Yellow Fields' (original ECM issue)
- Edward Ka-spel 'Dream Logik Pt. 1'
- Esplendor Geometrico 'Pulsion'
- Harald Grosskopf 'Synthesist 2010'
- Heaven 17 'Penthouse & Pavement' (2 disc reissue/remaster)
- Invisible Allies 'Hyperdimensional Animals'
- Jan Garbarek 'Sart'
- Jeff Green/Steve Stoll 'Tangled'
- John Foxx 'Impossible' & 'The Pleasures of Electricity' (w/L. Gordon) 2 CD remaster/reissue
- Klaus Schulze 'Big In Japan' (German 2 CD/DVD version on MIG)
- Klaus Wiese 'Divine Orbit'
- Koichi Watanabe 'Electronic Music 1979-1980'
- Meerkat 'Kapnos'
- Mind Over Matter 'Avatar'
- Polestar 'End of an Era'
- Q_ix 'Delayfull'
- Rasal.Asad 'Asuna'
- Robert Schroeder 'Cygnus-A' (CD reissue of early I.C. release - yay!)
- Soehngen 'How Do You Do'
- You 'Benaki Cycles'
- Zymosis 'Elements Into Data'

Today being the day I turn 50 (yikes!), I'm off to indulge further droppage of coin & plastic @ Princeton Record Exchange, then to dinner in the Big Apple in the midst of our current January snap of early December...

Happy 50th Darren. You're a youngster, I thought you were an older spacerocker!

Silly (maybe) question:

When do you have time to LISTEN to all this stuff???  Even with a desk job that allows me lots of listening time, I still got piles upon piles of newish stuff (that is sitting on piles of older stuff) not getting enough attention.  How many hrs per day do you estimate are devoted to the actual listening?  I'm still trying to think of ways to get in more "play" time. Possible ideas: install speakers in shower walls; sleep with one eye/both ears open, etc.etc.

Anyways, next trip to SF let's hang out and have a contest who can fill up their basket at Amoeba with the most stuff.  It may be a close race.

I haven't been buying any music at all lately. Just the Emeralds albums many many weeks ago. I'm digging back deep into the little that remains of my collection and going over it with a fine tooth comb. It kind of feels good to get into things I barely gave attention to upon first purchase, and actually listen to them with new ears. I'm really finding out what I like and don't like. Until gainful employment is forthcoming, this is the way it'll be. That said, I did hold on to all my world music, so have been getting plenty of that. Can never get tired of Guqin. Though my love of electro/ambient is returning with strength. I think buying/having too much had reduced my appreciation for individual albums, and stifled my ability to discern quality...

Just bought the new Bryan Ferry CD Olympia, and downloaded the new Duran Duran All You Need Is Now.

In both cases, fantastic new albums from people who are past the 30 year mark of making great music (though both, especially DD, have had their low points in between).

I just bought a bunch of Robert Rich releases I'd either lost or not got yet. 'Numena+Geometry', 'Somnium' 'Bestiary', 'Illumination' and 'Atlas Dei'.

I think they're all great. 'Illumination' surprised me the most, though. It didn't get much attention when it came out, and I ignored it at its release because of the fact it seemed to be presented as a mere companion piece to a larger work of media. But it's one of the most unusual and beautiful Rich releases in a long time, imho.

- demdike stare 'tryptych' (modern love)
- christian vogel 'black swan' (sub rosa)
- fred frith 'eye to ear 1' & 'eye to ear 2' (both tzadik) - been enjoying 'vol. 3' immensely...fantastic, uncategorizable stuff from the inimitable guitarist/composer...sort of 'rediscovering' him again via this series
- ishq 'lotus' (virtual) - when matt h. releases new ishq material, i'm there
- asmus tietchens 'marches funebres' (die stadt) - latest in the massive d.s. reissue series

- ranta/lewis/plank 'mu' - *massive* krautrock/electronic masterpiece/boxset featuring conny plank, rescued from oblivion by the metaphon label
- alois huber 'e.mbient' (laton) - laton is one of those 'obscure' labels that i've gradually been acquiring over time...electronica crossing raster-noton/idm/electro boundaries with ease
- radius 'iz punkta a v punkt b' (laton)
- anosphere 'fields of mutants' - quintessential italo-synth disco
- k. leimer 'music for land and water' - reissue of very early classic leimer, first released only on cassette

- traumklang 'raumzeit 1' & '2' (syngate)

I used to have this one.  Didn't quite do it for me.  I think I became accustomed to hearing Budd through extensive processing.  The timbres on The Room seemed a bit more brittle than, say, White Arcades, Lovely Thunder, or his collabs with Eno or Robin Guthrie.

I'm completely the opposite, Forrest. "The Room" is the only solo Budd that I love, although I do like the Budd/Eno collabs.

Recent purchase:  Hessien- Home is where the ghost is". Nice! Foggy and wispy guitar textures, kind of suspended-in-space sounding.

Hey Joe,
good to see you posting.

I'm a complete neutral on Budd (except with Eno) and don't understand the reverence some people have.
But I will now have to give TheRoom a listen.

Hi Anthony, nice to talk with you again :)  I like The Room for it's crisp dry sound, and every 'room" has a different feel. The Room was the first Budd disc I bought, and must have gotten too accustomed to that particular sound to appreciate his other music. The other ones just don't have the same magic for me.

Joe, Intereesting to hear your different take on The Room.  The high frequencies of that CD actually hurt my ears; I really didn't like the mastering on that one.  I've found recent Budd (especially his collabs) to be hit or miss.  I prefer his 80s output.

Hey Forrest, I think I have just enough hearing loss that my ears automatically take the edge off the higher frequencies ;-)

Hi 9dragons, if I can recommend to you something then I would go for Steve Roach & Mark Seelig "Nightbloom" CD. It's absolutely exciting tribal ambient with vocal overtoning magics. For me, a real masterwork and one of the best 2010 releases in this genre.

Thanks, I'll go for a listen.

On a side note, that Circadian Rhythms double cd started to look interesting, but the second disc sounds too rehashed, judging from the samples. I have a lot of patience for Roach, but there are certain albums that could be called annoyingly superfluous...

My recent purchases aren't ambient.  They are The Prodigy's The Fat of the Land and The Heavy's The House That Dirt Built.

I have a couple of The Prodigy's CDs, and I find their beats and use of synths inspiring. At school (I am a middle school teacher) I will blast a tune or two during class changes. Kids enter my class dancing.

The Heavy have a retro soul sound. Their front man is exceptional, and it's the only band I have seen Letterman request an encore. Check them out.

Today, yesterday, recently (all en route):

John Dyson 'Aquarelle', 'Different Values', & 'Darklight' - all purchased directly via his site, two older titles I didn't already have & his latest effort.

Nucleus 'Under The Sun / Snakehips Etcetera' & 'Alleycat/Direct Hits' - two great two-fers of classic 70s Brit jazz-rock from this seminal outfit.

The Machine 'Redhead' - wonderful minimal IDM/techno that reminds me of some of Richard Kirk's mid-period Sandoz (pre-dub) material.

Hakobune 'Away from the Lunar Waters'

Stefano Scala 'Impermanence'

Faryus 'Night Forest Realities'

Tim Story 'Collected' (Nepenthe)

1000schoen 'Moune' - Troum side project

Troum 'Autopoiesis/Nahtscato'

Herbst9 'From A Dark Chasm Below' & 'The Gods Are Small Birds' - appropo of the 'dark ambient' thread, here's two stellar examples, combining ethno/tribal percussion as well into the nocturnal mix.

Eberhard Schoener 'Bali-agung' - Never owned this, now I do; also just caught wind that his 'Flashback' disc w/Andy Summers, Sting & Copeland is being reissued, all great stuff (still have the original vinyl, plus a comp CD).

Man-dello 'Vaporetto to Eden' - very rare early 90s ambient trance from Barramundi that somehow slipped through my fingers upon first release.

Ultimate Zero 'Live' - new *killer* Eddie Jobson live 70s prog/tour outfit doing classic Crimson, UK, Bruford, & Mahavishnu chestnuts, w/John Wetton, Trey Gunn, etc.

Pete Farn 'Lichtdruck' (Syngate)

Sublamp 'In Our Hiding Voice' (Hibernate)

von Haulshoven + Syndromeda 'The Second Intelligent Lifeform'

and, adding to the list ;) :

Just bought yesterday:

Invalidobject Box set (Fällt) - extraordinarily rare box from the late lamented U.K. label Fällt, which originated the 'microsound' banner/subgenre virtually before anyone else. This box compiles 24 (!) 3" CDs from artists such as Taylor Deupree, Warmdesk, Scanner, Tu'M, Stephan Mathieu, Pita, etc., etc., and was the epitome of 'glitch'/laptop process music. Only 100 of these suckers were made; for historical, archival & pure listening reasons, pretty essential, and glad to have finally acquired.

Damn....some of y'all have a lot of money to spend. When you run out of music to buy, how's 'bout throwing a working stiff some dough-re-mi?  ;)

And if they toss you too much dough-re-mi, feel free to send some my way!

"Don't touch that dwarf, hand me the pliers". Heh, that's actually the name of an album, isn't it? I know I've heard it somewhere, and I love it! So bizarre and off-the-wall.

A hilarious comedy album by the group The Firesign Theatre....but the title is "crush" not "touch"

I'm getting ready to finally get a new cd, the occasion being my birthday. Thinking of Steve Roach's recent albums. I am allowed three new albums, which will probably be the only ones I can buy for many months to come. Any suggestions?

Hi 9dragons, personally I would suggest Steve's co-work with Mark Seelig "Nightbloom" as well as "Sounds From the Inbetween" Box Set also featuring Brian Parnham on "The Desert Inbetween". Happy Birthday... :)

Noticed Zyklop mention from Headonist.
At itunes the songs are only a $0.99 per download.
The first song is 59 minutes long.

On download songs
any song over 10 minutes
is always album only.

How do they determine this?

WTF.

Interested in download.
Go now.

Agree - also In a Silent Way which borders, somehow, on ambient music.

Both are/were available in SACD surround mixes and though the source for Kind of Blue was a 3-track recording,
and so is more limited in spaciality, with In a Silent Way, you are surrounded by keyboards!

Just ordered that recent Netherworld disc myself, and that Rapoon reissue as well; couldn't resist, with such superb packaging, even though I own the now quite-rare DOVe original.

Also en route:

Plastikman 'Arkives Reference' - massive 15 (!) CD + 1 DVD set from the acid-techno/post-electronica master.
Oophoi 'Time Fragments Vols 1-6' - recent purchases via the Hypnos store of all 6 of these key Oophoi reissues on Practising Nature.
Jim O'Rourke & Christoph Heeman 'Plastic Palace People' (Streamline) - more from their archives.
Jurgen Paape "Kompilation' (Kompakt)
Gert Emmens/Ruid Heij 'Blind Watchers of the Endless Night'
Clem Leek 'Holly Lane' (Hibernate)
Peter Mergener 'Phonetic Society'
Viking Destroyer 'Viking Destroyer'
Anduin (new boxset)
Alison Wait 'Dove Esistono Solo I Ricordi'

Ochre 'Like Dust of the Balance'
Martin Newcomb / all 4 of his back catalog releases - very rare & superb British synth/sequencer music.

Steven Berkowitz -- Light Pools

Initially got Ec(s)tasis from CD Baby, exchanged that with Light Pools. Like it much better. 3 separate
drone tones merge and diverge almost randomly and very beautifully with each other over 1 hour with plenty of silence and space between.

Did you get yours yet? I got mine today and listening to it for the first time now. It sounds very promising. Feels like he is trying something new which is good. But then he also mentioned on his site that this is the first time with analog hardware for him, hence a different result in real-time playing.

Ordered this from the artist before he made it available for sale. So apparently I'm the first one to get a copy.

Steve Roach to cover artist: "I don't care what colors you use, or if it's a photo, a painting, or whatever. Just make sure it's FLAT!"

I personally love those horizon line covers.

It's aesthetically pleasing and almost abstract when nature exhibits so much linear partitioning.

I really like those covers too. It wasn't until I saw them all together that I was aware of the strong theme connecting many of Roach's cover images.

It's a 5" CD.  The large packaging also fits a 45 RPM record!  I'm awfully tempted by this one, too.

Post by: mgriffin on November 11, 2011, 07:55:28 PM
If that Budd album on New Albion is the one I'm thinking it is, it's probably my least favorite of his -- full of bad poetry read aloud, poorly.
Title: Re: Recent music purchases
Post by: headonist on November 11, 2011, 07:56:43 PM
Oh, ok. The thing is, I was so much into Harold Budd the last week (as you may have noticed by my purchases). And one thing led to another and I found Morton Feldman. So this is the vein I am into now, minimalistic piano music.
Title: Re: Recent music purchases
Post by: mgriffin on November 11, 2011, 07:58:34 PM
I'll definitely buy that Morton Feldman album. I love minimal piano... Satie, Harold Budd, Ruben Garcia. I wish there were more of it.

for those into minimal piano soundscapes, I'd recommend Morton Feldman's "For Bunita Marcus" and the magnificent "Gymnosphere: Song of the Rose", by Jordan de la Sierra
Title: Re: Recent music purchases
Post by: headonist on November 14, 2011, 09:35:02 AM
As I remember it, these are very good live takes on Opera De Reims. I suppose Attahk is a good album if you want a little more shorter-song-based tunes. Otherwise they tend to stretch it out and do very long compositions, like Kohntarkosz. Don't miss out on their new material though, they gotten really good over the last ten years. Like the 3CDbox Trilogie, I used to consider that essential.
Title: Re: Recent music purchases

"Studio Zund" is a 12 cd box that contains all the best Magma studio albums. Then I'd recommend the wonderful "Emehntehtt Re". On the live side, "Magma Live", "Opera de Reims" and "Theatre du Taur: Concert 1975"

For those that doesn't know Rhythm & Sound. Their music can be explained like a hybrid of techno and reggae. They've got the vocals from reggae, but instrumental-wise it's very sparse, with dubby and minimalistic beats.

Aglaia-Absolutely Deep-these guys just keep producing wonderful sounds.
Biosphere-1991-2004-comp of b-sides,some great tracks.A few more trancy,a few a bit difficult,many around the Substrata sounds.Only download.
Drone on,how is the Aglaia you got,saw that.Anyone hear the new Alio Die?
I saw the Chameleons Vox in November in DC,best show I have seen in the last decade, only 50 persons, weak sound but incredible energy.

There's a review of the other Aglaia here on the forum by R. Gurtler (see Music Reviews section).  Both Algaia's are very good.  There's a limited CDR (and also download avail on iTunes) called "Out of the Way" which sounds the best of the three to me.  I've only heard the samples of the new Alio Die discs via iTunes.  Not sure I'll buy them yet, I wasn't wildly impressed.

All 3 new Aglaia CDs/CDrs are highly recommended!!! Just the same with both new Alio Die's co-works with Lingua Fungi and Antonio Testa, plus live CDr by Alio Die & Zeit. Yes, the limited CDr editions in handmade digipaks look very nice too, collector's items!!! But than can be said also on all Hic Sunt Leones digipaks. And there is out now also new Alio Die CD on Projekt. All these Italian guys seem to be very productive. Highly recommended!!!

Celer - Tightrope (very pleasant and subtle.  Not a huge departure from other recent Celer releases, though this one is just Will Long)
Ian Anderson - Thick as a Brick 2 (how about that--a prog sequel 40 years later! (sort of).  It's not Tull and the songs do not run continuously together, though I like the idea behind it ('What ever happened Gerald Bostock?') and the songs are interesting, if a bit rockier)

I've rather enjoyed Apsaras over the years. I got into it quickly, as when I bought it, I was in a very stressful situation and it seemed to really help me unwind. I come back to it now and then and hear new things in it every time. I think it will grow on you.

I haven't posted anything on here in a long time. Here's what I've gotten so far this year, not much ambient I'm afraid, mostly older stuff that I haven't had in decades, all are CD except were noted:

Peter Michael Hamel - Colours of Time/Bardo
Eberhard Schoener - Bali Agung  (CD & DVD)
Morton Subotnick - Electronic Works 3 (DVD)
Gentle Giant - Giant for a Day
Gentle Giant - Interview
Gentle Giant - Missing Piece
Kula Shaker - K
Popol Vuh - Werner Herzog Soundtracks boxset
Pink Floyd - Relics
Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Biosphere - N-Plants
Richard Pinhas - Event & Repetitions
Richard Pinhas - Schizotrope: Life & Death of Marie Zorn
Richard Pinhas - Metal/Crystal
Richard Pinhas - L'Ethique
Heldon - Interface
Heldon - Agneta Nilsson
Gloria Cheng - Piano Music of Salonen, Stucky & Lutoslawski
Gloria Cheng - Piano Music of John Adams & Terry Riley

I bought Gloria's stuff mainly because I work with her and I thought I would nice to support a fellow artist.

My favorite Gentle Giant albums are Free Hand, In a Glass House and Octopus.  I saw them open for Renaissance in the mid-70s and they were pretty amazing.

I have that Gloria Cheng CD of John Adams and Terry Riley piano pieces--I like her rendition of Adams' Phrygian Gates.

Yeah I love Gentle Giant, I got into them kind of late but they have grown on my over the years. They just released most of their albums all remastered for CD for the first time, so I bought these three that I didn't have to see how they sound.

I like Gloria, she's pretty cool, and is one of the few here in the music school that actually likes modern music, most of the instructors here are pretty traditional, which is pretty funny as a lot of them seem to be jealous of her getting so much work written for her. I think her also winning a Grammy a couple of years ago might also have something to do with it. ;)

I found a near-mint copy of the original "Epsilon in Malaysian Pale" CD by Edgar Froese for $15 in a record store.  This was near impossible to find and if you did find one the prices were ridiculous!  I realize Virgin just came out with the Froese solo box set, where the solo albums were remastered.  This is probably why somebody sold their original.  I still don't think this would de-value the original CD, though, do you?

After recently getting over my fear of downloads, I went crazy on the DiN label download releases (DinDDL):

Ian Boddy-The Final Question, Three Dreams, Mechanics of a Thought (sort of a triptych of individual releases)
Ian Boddy/Bernhard Wostheinrich-Hemispheres (double album)
ARC-Rise
Ian Boddy-Strange Attractors

All live recordings from various concerts like Bochum Planetarium, Awakenings, and Star's End.  All excellent, all as good as anything quality wise DiN has released! Highly recommended...

Also, got a couple tracks off the "Lost in the Humming Air" tribute album to Harold Budd.  I didn't care for most of it, but the two I downloaded are excellent--one is by Porn Sword Tobacco (ugly name, beautiful music).

And then there's Bruno Sanfilippo's ultra-amazing "Urbs" which I am formulating a review for.  This review will be filled with a plethora of complimentary adjectives like "superb," "incredible," etc. etc......

Manuel Gottsching-Inventions for Electric Guitar CD (2011 remaster).  What a great album, a classic.

Manuel Gottsching-E2E4 (30th Anniv.).  Another classic.

Roedelius-Wasser Im Wind CD (reissue).  Some nice, trippy electronics on here.  This one is supposed to be one of his best solo works.  I need a good couple of headphone listens.

I don't know about the monetary valuing but a remastering doesn't guarantee an album will sound better. Sometimes they sound worse.
Sometimes different people will prefer different remasters (on classic albums that get remastered every few years).

On a "tangent" I remember hearing (an early CD master) of Phaedra, turned up loud on my first CD player and being thrilled that I could now clearly hear the tape hiss from the Echoplex.  I wonder if they've removed the hiss in later remasters.   ;)

Oh yeah! Count me in on the Ishq and Ishvara, just ordered both.  The Ishq release is limited to just 200 copies (the other Virtual releases are usually 500) and comes in a digipak as opposed to Virtual's usual jewel cases.  I'm sure it will sell out pretty quickly.  Sound samples were very pleasing to the ear...but then again, I love everything about the label so every release is an automatic "must buy"!!   :)

Got an email from Virtual announcing these releases and the email says the Ishvara disc is limited to 300, not 500 as stated on their website.  Awaiting confirmation from them about this.

Per Jacqueline of Virtual (and one half of Ishvara with Ishq), the Ishvara "Under a Hexagon Sky" CD is limited to 300 copies; they are correcting it on the website.

I suspect they are going to do smaller runs of CD's from now on like Namlook has been doing (300 copies), I would guess due to slower CD sales these days and more cost-effective downloads.

With shipping included from the UK to US, it worked out to $19 per CD, which is pretty reasonable to me for an import.

My Bloody Valentine- E.P's 1988-1991.  Expensive 2-CD import but really good collection here, remastered by Kevin Shields.  Music made on drugs to take drugs to (or something like that).  Saw these guys live around '93/94, it was like being inside an airplane hangar (but in a good way).

Ride-Nowhere 20th Anniversary edition.  This is a "handmade" limited run on Rhino, consisting of two CD's--the remastered Nowhere album plus Today Forever e.p., and a second disc recorded live in '91 at the Roxy in L.A.  The live disc kicks some serious ass.

Klaus Schulze-La Vie Electronique Vol. 11.  3 discs of KS weirdness circa '93.  This was the period where he was using all digital synths, computers, and samplers.  A little too much of that weird "opera" sampling like on "Dome Event" for my ears, although some of it's quite nice.

Yagya-The Inescapable Decay of My Heart.  I just ordered this so I haven't heard it yet (in its entirety).  Uh, not exactly the world's greatest title for an album, but I'm sure the music will be sublime as usual for Yagya.

Very close to placing my orders (first of 2013!) for:

Taylor Deupree-Faint.  The $30 box set version beckons, but my wallet keeps screaming "WHOOOOAH buddy!"

Rapoon-Seeds in the Tide Volume I.  This is a 2-disc set on Zoharum out of Poland, containing one disc of "rare" compilation tracks, and the second disc containing the original CDR version of "Messianic Ghosts," which supposedly is quite different from the cleaned up reissue on Klanggalerie.  Still not 100% decided on this; it could be good, but don't know about sound quality of Disc 2 and whether the comp tracks will be worth it to spend $20 on this set.

I finally got my hands on the full collection of William Basinski's Disintegration Loops this Christmas.
I got 'em second hand but they're in good condition and I've been after them for way too long.
Cue many weeks sprawled on my bed with loops on repeat and zoning out into unknown consciouses.
The first loop will always be my favourite, it's just amazing: William Basinski - d|p 1.1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYOr8TlnqsY#)

Why do you folks make of the new Autechre?

I can't make my mind up about it. But I do know the second track, 'irlite (get 0)', is one of the strangest and most fantastic things I have heard in a long time. It's got a wonderfully thick, foggy, dark, surreal but fun atmosphere. The new album also sounds much better and more 'three-dimensional' on headphones to me than most of their more recent albums do.

Autechre: Exai. This one is worth talking about. Autechre are making some of the most fascinating music around. It feels like they've gotten to a stage where they are just having a blast with it, and incidentally making some of the most unique while still being listenable electronica. By no means an instantly "easy" listen, this is a tome to be studied and enjoyed in reverie. I feel a sense that they are not trying to be avant-garde, they are making the music that's inside their minds, and it just comes out that way. Can't believe they've been around this long and are still sounding fresh and awesome, while most others of Warp have faded or given up.

FRKWYS07: This one sounds good on first few listens. Classic electronica sound.

Senor Coconut: El Baile Aleman. Bought this on a whim because it looked so amazingly weird. Haven't had a chance to listen as I am out of town and away from stereo, and Mac won't let me burn it. But I feel there is great promise and joy here.

Eeem - Peregrination. Thought this was sold out and I had missed out. Had an email from Lee at ...txt to say he had found some discs. £8 bargain. First listen complete this rainy Saturday morning. Excellent. Dreamy ambient in the main with some glitchy and environmental sounds on one or two tracks. Straight back on the player, right now.

Found a 2nd hand CD of Budd/ Guthrie - After The Night Falls in my local record shop. Now I have to confess that piano type ambient is not my favourite, I have to be in the mood for it, I own plenty Budd btw (and enjoy it when I play same occasionally) This album is excellent though, been on constant rotation, probably a bit less piano orientated though.

Phobos - An October Evening Very deep and dark , as ever. Great stuff and a track with some beats  ;) surprising but excellent !! Looking forward to watching the DVD .

Ecovillage - Jesus of Nazereth on psychonavigation bandcamp. What a beautiful, ethereal , uplifting listen. CD ordered. Good for Christmas Ambient Listening.

Namlook/ Spyra - Virtual Vices 4 , superb jazz orientated with ambient also. My first ever FAX download a few years back.

Robert Wyatt - Different Every Time, compilation - superb
Dark Side of the Moog, 1-4 boxset - KS and the much missed Mr Namlook - This is very good indeed, more beat orientated in bits than my usual fair but enjoyed it all, some wonderful ambient soundscapes.

Carpe Sonum release of Nachtplank - Alien new album. Now this is different, very different from Echo Ark. Difficult to describe, probably experimental, alien like  :D  and very interesting. I like it.

And....

Autumn of Communion - Polydeuces.

The Birdy soundtrack sounds interesting. I passed on a used LP copy of that awhile back. I do enjoy his early solo work and of course "Passion", which is an amazing album.

Don't have any Eno post-Thursday Afternoon. What does that album sound like?

Hi cvac.

The Birdy album is excellent. Mainly ambient orientated. About 4 of the tracks have themes from PG3 and 4 . I really enjoyed the mix of themes and soundtrack. Will need to watch the film again. Must be about 25 years since I saw it last. I just bought PG1 on remastered vinyl. One of these expensive mastered at 45rpm jobs. One of the best quality pressings on the black stuff I have heard. Stunning and great album also.

I have only heard he Eno twice through so still digesting. Beautiful, classic Eno ambience. Possibly one of the best I have of Mr Eno. Many plays will follow his week. It's that kind of album , which in my experience is always a good sign .

Steve Roach - Possible Planet

Haven't noticed much mention of this album on the net. Having checked the samples on bandcamp thought I would enjoy this.

Dark and brooding with mysterious life forms, organic slow growth becomes more active and emerges into a lighter world on the final track where there is a subtle hint of a more Berlin School environment. All on analogue equipment.

I really like this album, been on constantly the last few days. The perfect companion to the otherworldly space epic I am reading.

In Through the Out Door along with Presence are my two favorite Zeppelin albums.  I'm probably in the minority, where others would cite Zoso and Physical Graffiti, which are still great of course.  I bought the 2CD remaster of Out Door.  I was greatly disappointed in the remastering of the original album.  I found it too bright (the lower frequencies inexplicably sucked out),and very digitized sounding.  I kept my original Page remaster from the 90s luckily.  Really enjoyed the companion disc of different mixes.  Strangely the companion disc sounded as good as the older remaster.

Truthfully I've never fully been able to get into Topographic, and I have a nice sounding 70s 2xLP in excellent shape. Played my CD of Relayer the other day, I like that one more, even if it doesn't quite reach the heights of Close to the Edge for me.

Hey cvac, sorry I missed your reply to that.

I am actually just listening to Topographic in DTS surround right now. Amazing job by Steve Wilson remixing this in surround. Quite an experience listening to it. Hearing several things I have never heard before buried in the mix. Wonderful album that jostles for top position with Close to the Edge for me.

Also has to be said the 2016 stereo remixes are also excellent, quite apparently different in bits and worth checking out. This album has lived with me for about 40 years , I know it well, but still hear new stuff every listen.

It is probably my greatest album of all time, all genres. A few contenders for that though.

Just bought a number of Klaus Schulze reissues:
Irrlicht, Cyborg, Blackdance, Timewind, Mirage, Body Love Vol 2, X, Live, Dune.

I like the digipak covers and I've really enjoyed some of the music - not so sure about some, adding extra tracks from different years seems unnecessary and changes the atmosphere of the whole album.
   Others are really good additions....

Pete Namlook / Dave Moufang -

XVIII- Sexoid , there's a track on this called "Retro Future" , check it out and it will blow your mind  ;) especially in surround DTS.
XIX - Dawning Of A New Decade, a more ambient offering and again wonderful in DTS mode

and finally got hold of this.......................

Gert Emmens - Triza....................Love it. Some ambient parts but mainly Berlin school late 70s/early 80s Tangerine Dream vibe.

Mick Chillage - Exulansis

Almost 4 hours of high class ambient mastery. Mostly over drone work , some with hint of melody, space ambient, and some dark atmospheres. Amazing piece of work and still taking it all in.

Namlook / Moufang - Raumland Sphare. Possibly my least favourite of The Raumland trilogy, more beat orientated, but still very good indeed.

DTS surround mode will be activated for a listen later .

Possibly the greatest album of all time   ;)

Yes - Close to the Edge . The Steve Wilson (of Porcupine Tree fame)  remix. Difficult to get hold of this version now. The new stereo mix is excellent great clarity in the vocals and instrumentation. Possibly even an improvement on the original.

I will listen to the Blu Ray 5.1 surround at the weekend and possibly completely and utterly blow my mind  :)

Squire's bass is much fuller in this new surround mix, the guitars crisp and the floating space section of the title track is a beautiful dream.

It's really a beautiful album Chris.  I would also recommend "Autumn Continent" I have been falling asleep to that one several nights in a row. Gorgeous music.

Just received the new CD ,

Dreamfish. Namlook/ Morris

Had the download for years and it sufficed whilst I acquired other FAX on CD. So in my local, favourite record shop my eyes popped right out my head, literally, when I saw the reissue on sale for £1.99. All these years , in fact decades, I have been purchasing from said shop and I have never seen any Namlook. Made my week that did  :D

Couldn't believe my luck, perfect condition too. Have actually found a few Budd , Eno and some ambient collections in the same shop over the years, although it's mainly Rock and vinyl orientated. Never thought I would come across Mr Namlook's class music though . Will be checking more often now   :)

Quaeschning and Schnauss- Synthwaves . The Tangerine Dream men. Very good indeed. Not strictly ambient obviously but with a blend of Berlin School and more modern electronica. Recommend checking it out. Bit of a grower also

Oldfield - Return to Ommadawn - nice stuff.
Tull - Thick as a Brick . Steve Wilson remix .

Juta Takahashi - Albion , music inspired by the landscape of the UK. The album cover is befitting of the music, absolutely beautiful ambient of the highest quality. That photo has to be my homeland I suspect. North West Highlands or Skye possibly, stunning. Had to get the iTunes download as not on bandcamp unfortunately. Available on CD baby though.

Also.......from cryochamber......

Randall Collier - Ford ..... Remnants . A dark ambient beauty from the depths of a subterranean city at night I suspect  ;). Reminiscent of Lightwave - Nachtmusic which is high praise.

Both albums highly recommended.

I have mainly been on a FAX buying frenzy recently , Otras , Redeye, A Day in the Park, Namlook solo albums and several Move D/ Namlook collabs. FAX overload of new music and it is so good.

However here ye go .......

Deep, dark ambient beauty from the depths of the Norwegian Forests ----
