Title: Forrest Fang news
Post by: ffcal on December 14, 2011, 10:06:55 PM
Just thought I'd provide a brief update on my recent activities and releases.  I've just finished recording and mixing a new CD called "Animism."  It is sort of a hybrid of my more structured "Folklore" CD and the atmospheric layering in "Gongland," but with a prominence given to textures.  It may be out by June or July 2012, most likely on Projekt, but I'll update when I know more.

I also contributed a piece to Black Tape For A Blue Girl's 2nd CD for "The Rope 25" Projekt release--a cover version of "Hide In Yourself" featuring a bit of gamelan and palm harp.  Other ambient artists on the comp are Dirk Serries (Vidna Obmana, Fear Fall Burning) and Erik Wollo.  Here is a link to that release (which came out this month):  http://projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=PRO00020 (http://projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=PRO00020)

A demix/deconstruction I did for Barry Cleveland's King Crimsonesque "Hologamatron" album in 2010 is up at Bandcamp.  I think it can be streamed from there, for those who are curious.  I used mostly acoustic elements from different tracks in the piece, "Abandoned Mines," and mangled and stretched them a bit.  The really ominous sound you hear in that piece was originally a Michael Manring bassline.  The link to that piece is here:  http://barrycleveland.bandcamp.com/track/abandoned-mines-forrest-fang-remix (http://barrycleveland.bandcamp.com/track/abandoned-mines-forrest-fang-remix)

My last release, my second Sans Serif CD, "Unbound" has been out since this summer and is available from iTunes and from the Hypnos store.

Thanks for the continuing support and feedback,
Forrest

I really like your remix of Abandoned Mines. Your approach makes reference to the original (a fine track on a superb album) while giving me more of the feeling of being in an abandoned mine. I'm glad it was included on the original release.

As I mentioned in a related thread, my next CD, Animism, will be formally released by Projekt on June 19.  It is currently available for preorder http://projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=PRO00274 (http://projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=PRO00274), and, for those who can't wait, is presently available from Steve Roach's website http://steveroach.com/store/store.php?item=478 (http://steveroach.com/store/store.php?item=478).  MP3 previews of tracks from the CD are up at both websites.  This release is probably my fullest realization to date of a hybrid electro-acoustic style.

Hope you enjoy it.

Been trying not to clutter up my mini-thread with too many posts about the same release.  For those who wanted hear at least one complete track from the Animism CD first, the second track ("The Chamelon's Paintbox) is at the tail end of Projekt's latest podcast that features the band Unto Ashes.  Here is that link through iTunes:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/radio-projekt-projekt-podcast/id456619957 (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/radio-projekt-projekt-podcast/id456619957)

The album became available digitally this past week through iTunes, Amazon and eMusic.  Jeff Kowal posted a nice listener review at the album's iTunes page (thanks Jeff!):

I recently completed two pieces for a Projekt holiday compilation called "Ornamental" that is in pre-order phase now (it's a bit early for that, I know).  The first piece is a cover version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen."  The second is an extended ambient remix of that piece.  One-minutes samples of both are up at Ornamental's Projekt page for those who are curious:

http://projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=PRO00285 (http://projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=PRO00285)

Also, thought I'd mention that for those who enjoyed my recent Animism CD, spreading the word (through Amazon, Facebook, etc.) is greatly appreciated.

For those who may be interested, I appeared on Dean Suzuki's Discreet Music radio show on KPFA this past Sunday to promote my Projekt CD, "Animism," which was released in July. An audio archive of that interview can be found here:  http://www.kpfa.org/archive/id/85406. (http://www.kpfa.org/archive/id/85406.)  The interview is during the first hour.  The show will be up there until Sunday, November 4.  It's not a hi-fi archive, but I do premiere a new piece towards the end, a cover version of 'Warszawa' that I recorded for an upcoming Projekt CD tribute to David Bowie.

Good interview.   Jorge Reyes anecdote especially interesting, although you stated he passed away "in the late 90's".  Wasn't it just a couple years ago, like 2010 or 2011?

Hi drone on,  Thanks for listening.  Yes, you're right--looks like it was closer to 2009.  I was probably thinking of the last recordings I had heard from him.  I know he continued to perform in Mexico into the 2000s, but his visibility in the states seemed to slip after the 90s (I know he had health problems, and that probably didn't help).

Some reissue news of sorts.  Projekt will be reissuing my "Wolf At the Ruins" CD this coming year.  I don't have the timing nailed down just yet, but Robert Rich will be remastering it (the original master sounded rather crunchy, as it was recorded in the mid-to-late 80s and was pre-digital).

Thanks, Richard.  I've been thinking about reissuing this one for a while and am glad it's now coming together.  I'll have probably have an unreleased track or two originally recorded for the project on the CD as well.  Funny thing, when I originally released this, I was thinking of only releasing it only on vinyl in a limited edition of 100.

Just a brief note to let folks know that Animism is now also available in FLAC format (besides 320 kbps MP3) through Bandcamp for $7.  Here's a link:

I noticed that Loren's Slow Dream is also up there for $7, too.

I recently completed a strange experimental remix for Attrition that might see the light of day, but in what format I don't know.

It's been a while in coming, but Projekt's reissue of my third and fourth albums, "The Wolf At The Ruins/Migration" is now available for pre-order as a two-fer.  (The formal release date is August 13.)  "Wolf" has been out of print since the mid-90s and "Migration" was only previously available on LP, so I'm happy that these are available again in (hopefully) a more friendly format (CD and digital).  Robert Rich did an especially nice job cleaning up the sonics on these albums through remastering.  The sound is a lot more transparent now.  I've included 4 previously unreleased bonus tracks that add 20 minutes to the CDs.  Sam has added a nice promotion:  the first 100 copies of Wolf sold through Projekt will include a free copy of my 2011 "Unbound" release under the Sans Serif name.

There will be only 300 copies of the CDs made, though the digital release will not limited.

Here is the Projekt pre-order page:
http://www.projekt.com/store/product/pro00290/ (http://www.projekt.com/store/product/pro00290/)

I noticed that Amazon has 30-second segments from each of the pieces up there, though it's not available from there until August 13:

Thanks, guys.  Almost forgot to mention that my second album, "Some Brighter Stars," will be also available digitally for the first time in mid-August via Projekt (probably through Bandcamp).  Robert Rich remastered this one as well.  I released this in the early 80s (scary to think how long ago that was), and used tape delay ("Frippertronics") on it extensively, but with synths and acoustic instruments instead of guitars.  (The original vinyl is going for a ridiculous price on Amazon (almost 200 bucks)--makes me wish I had made more of them.)

The package from Projekt arrived well over a week ago and I've given everything a few listens now. My first introduction to Forrest Fang was Gongland. That album always struck me as containing a creative mixture of various eastern instrumentation and styles and em-based ambient. It is really unique album and one that has remained in rotation around my house despite its age. With that as context, it is really fascinating to hear releases prior to Gongland that seem more firmly rooted on one side of that coin vs. the other. I'm really enjoying Wolf/Migration, but I, must confess, I also feel a bit like an archeologist who is uncovering the origins of the modern Forest Fang sound; it is hard for me to appreciate the albums on their own terms. Some of the tracks really stand out as brilliant. I'm particularly fond of The Luminous Crowd, A Quiet Place, Silent Fields, and Karina. I also prefer Wolf over Migration. Many of the songs on Migration have a one-track quality and don't have the richness of the multi-instrumentation contained in Wolf.

I'm somewhat reluctant to note, given the fact that this is a re-release celebration, that what I really enjoyed from this package was the "free with your order" copy of Unbound.  That is some of the best drone work I've listened to lately. It is just as good with head phones and deep listening as it is as background ambiance. A true gem.

HI Chris,

Thanks for your feedback.  No need for you to feel any reluctance in your comments.  You're right, Migration is more spartan than Wolf.  My sound on Migration was dominated by a minimalist approach not only in structure but in instrumentation.  I also made a conscious effort to (mostly) avoid violin on that release, though it's my main instrument.  The sound on Wolf is much fuller because I had better equipment and more channels to work with, I had started acquiring more instruments, and I had just added my first two real electronic polyphonic keyboards to my sound--a Korg DSS-1 sampler and a cheap Casio digital synth (the CZ-101).  I think of Wolf as a transition album--some elements of space music, some of a world progressive sound, but I was still working it out.  If Wolf was the egg, then Migration was the embryo.  Years ago I had been planning to reissue Wolf because I would periodically get requests for it but never seemed to get around to it.  When it finally happened, I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to add in Migration, since that was a vinyl only release.  Since the music is over 20 years old, I'm not surprised that some of it has aged better (or worse) than other parts, but hopefully, you found enough in it to find it worth the trouble.

I'm especially pleased that you enjoyed Unbound.  That release is a bit of a departure from my other releases on Projekt, in that is more hardcore ambient soundscape.  I know it may not be as appealing to those who prefer my world progressive style, but it's something I wanted to do.

Regards,
Forrest

Just wanted to let folks know that I've added a few stray tracks to a new Soundcloud page I just created.  What prompted me to do this was a new one-off track I created yesterday for fun ("Bothered") that was inspired by Tim Story's recent collaborations with members of the German electronic band Cluster.  I've also posted a track from 2009 ("Cicidas") that I originally posted to last.fm, a track from 2001 ("Silent Blue") that didn't make it onto Phantoms, and an ambient track I did back in 1999 ("Crickets With Gongs") as Spirit Oscillator for a beat-oriented EP.

Here is the link:

As for my next CD, it should be released by Projekt a few months from now, probably in January 2015.

I think this is a heady and hypnotic album, mature and subtle. The instrumentation is varied and balanced and the percussive elements blend very well overall. Production wise, it's very 'full' (in terms of spectral balance) and balanced.

Good stuff all round !

SOME STRAY MUSIC, AN UPCOMING MIX AND AN UPCOMING ECHOES INTERVIEW

An update:  I've just posted 2 additional pieces to my "odds and sods" Soundcloud page.  One is an unreleased piece from around the time I was recording Gongland, and the other is a minimalist electronic piece I recorded over the weekend to test out some new sounds.

I was recently invited by French radio program Solenopole to provide a 50-minute mix of my music and influences.  The show's mixes are streamable off the internet.  Past participants have included Rapoon and Laszlo Hortobagyi.  I'll let you know when my mix becomes available.  Some past mixes are located here:

http://solenopole.blogspot.fr/2011/12/solenomix.html

I was interviewed this month by John Diliberto for his Echoes radio show.  "Letters To The Farthest Star" made it to his Top 25 for February.  My interview segment is scheduled to air on April 6.

http://echoes.org/2015/03/03/echoes-top-25-for-february-2015/

Two nice reviews of Letters from John Shanahan of Hypnagogue and Peter Thelen of Expose Magazine came in this past week, too (besides Bert Strolenberg's thoughtful one for Sonic Immersion):

Thanks, Scott.  The final mix of the Lumin segment is part of a longer suite I've been working on over the past few months.  The project's been coming along nicely so far.  There's a bit in there of the Wavestation SR I picked from Loren many moons ago, among other things.

NEW ALBUM COMPLETED

I'm pleased (and relieved) to say that I've finally completed recording and mixing a new album for Projekt.  The album is called "Gone To Ground."  One surprise is that it will be a double CD--my first one, not counting the "Wolf/Migration" reissue.  It will be priced slightly more than a single CD, but not a huge jump.  This album is more hypnotic and dreamlike than my last one.  My friend Robert Rich will be mastering it (he also contributes flutes to one track).  The release date is not firmed up yet, but it may be as soon as this Winter.  I'll provide an update here when I have more information.

Yes, I feel the same, when I've completed a project - I don't want to listen to the thing for a loooong time later :)

Yes--and now the fun begins---press release, artwork, liner notes, publicity (such as it is in our tinysubgenre)..... ???

Time to switch on some non-ambient music....;)

STATUS OF MY NEW ONE

Looks like my upcoming double CD is on track for a late January release, with physical copies being available through Projekt in early or mid-December. Mastering is finished. Currently working on fine-tuning the rest. Should be a really good one, I think.

The album title has changed. It's now called, "The Sleepwalker's Ocean" (after a suite on the album with the same name).
Thanks everyone for hanging tight in the meantime.

Forrest

Thanks guys!  Part of my quixotic quest to prove that the album is not dead.  Love live the playlist.   ;)

The cover artist (Kinga Britschgi) is very talented.

Really love the artwork Forrest.....my imagination is running around with excitement thinking about all the sonic scenarios you may have created  that this image reflects.

So looking forward to hearing the music.

That's cool, Scott.  Hope you like it.  Haven't seen my copy yet, so you might hear it before I do!

Other than pre-orders, the album should be generally available from Projekt in early January.

Listening to the bandcamp stream of this, utterly beautiful. Magnificent work.

Would really love to get the CD , however having checked the postage scenario to the UK on the projekt site it is looking like $10 plus maybe another $10-$15 for the EMS. Anyone confirm the postage story to UK for projekt? I will email them in a bit.

If I can't get a UK supplier I will buy the download Forest. Really is something special.

Thanks, thirdsystem.  I appreciate your kind words.  Sorry to hear that the postage from the US would be a fortune.  The CD might become available through Amazon.co.uk when it is formally released on January 22:

Thanks for the info Forest and David. Not sure if I can wait till the 22nd, we shall see.

The insured postage from the US is way too much so I will have to ponder on CD or Download. Instant gratification is winning at the moment   ;)

I got it as a download through Bandcamp earlier in the week. I'm looking forward to an opportunity this weekend to listen to it more deeply. I'm liking what I've heard on listens in my car (not the ideal setting). Looking forward to the cd release, also.

Thanks, guys.  I appreciate it.

Something I forgot to mention is that Sam/Projekt's running a "free/name your price" Bandcamp promotion for Gongland this weekend.  It's mentioned in his newsletter:

http://www.projekt.com/store/forrest-fang-gongland-name-your-price-download-what-is-the-marxolin/

In the newsletter, I also responded to a listener comment about my odd-ball instrument, the Marxolin.  Here's a picture of it:

That's cool Forrest, never seen a Marxolin before. I have a related instrument, the Marxophone. I've never used it on any of my projects yet, maybe some day. Here's a picture of what mine looks like:

I have one of those, too!   ;D   But yours is in much better condition than mine.  Remember that album that Pink Floyd was supposed to do with rubber bands?  Maybe we could do an ambient album with only Marxophones!

Let me know what you think of my new one!

Decided to go for the download just now . I will consider getting the CD also as that beautiful album cover deserves to be held and appreciated. Stunning music being eagerly devoured and enjoyed. It will be on constant rotation for a good while.

Also got the Gongland album , great stuff, thanks for that deal Forest and Projekt.

Just bought the new album, along with a copy of Gongland which I was sure I already owned but must have lost...

Anyway about half way in and I am quite enjoying the thick, warm sound stage of the album and the harmonic content which is a great balance of subtle and complex...very hard to pull this off well and Forrest did that quite nicely. Meaning it the tones and layers are subtle enough to not draw undo attention to them selves in an obvious way and yet they are quite intricate if you listen deeply. Not sure if I am making sense ha ha!

I am also enjoying the blend of real acoustic instruments and electronics and even more so the delights of actual performance!

Great job Forrest!

Thanks, Paul!  I'm glad that you're enjoying it so far.  I think I probably layered more different textures on this album than on any other, but I tried to make the transitions very subtle.  I got a little carried away with my layering in places, but hopefully not too much!

To coincide with today’s formal release date for my new Projekt album, “The Sleepwalker’s Ocean,” I’d like to share these two recent pieces with you as a thank you for listening.

The first piece, “Chimera,” is an outtake from my recordings for this release. I left it off only because it didn’t seem to fit anywhere. The piece has elements that were composed at different times and were blended together much later. The second piece, “Arrow,” is a short experimental piece I recorded recently just for fun. It incorporates two instruments that date back to my childhood: a drum with a cardboard frame that my father helped me make in Indian Guides and a pair of maracas given to my family by a visiting exchange student. I’ve included a picture of them. Hope you enjoy the music.

I have an old zither that's kind of similar, but I haven't used it in a long time. It's not in great shape but all the strings were still on it the last I checked.

Apparently, they were more popular 100 years ago.
