Title: Low Light Mixes
Post by: Dave Michuda on June 06, 2008, 09:52:53 PM
Rather than post a new topic every time I do a new mix, I figured I'll make one Low Light Mixes thread for all the new mixes.

So here is the new mix, A Ghost in the Phase.  It's the sequel to A Drift on the Signal.  Which basically means I had no new ideas so I just ripped off a previous theme.

This mix, like the first one, combines recordings of shortwave radio & ambient music with shortwave elements.  Somehow in the first mix I never included anything from Tetsu Inoue's World Receiver, but I've rectified that this time.  Don't forget you can get World Receiver from Infraction Records (http://www.infractionrecords.com/shop.html).  New music from Rameses III, Rod Modell and Sylvain Chauveau is in there along with Stephen Mathieu's Radioland because it's constructed from shortwave broadcasts.

Nice job, Dave...d/l'ed yesterday & have had it playing on my desktop...quietly crunchy & glitchy.

And there's nothing wrong with a Part II. I have several mix series that go for 3 & 4 parts. In fact, I think it's challenging to make mixes that really play well together.

Here the latest mix from Low light Mixes...

It's an ambient trip down memory lane.  I have been listening to Steve Roach's Structures from Silence as sleep music lately.  It was great to hear that cd again, especially the title track.  So that made me pull out some more 'golden oldies', which lead to this mix...retroact 1.0.

All the music in this mix is at least 10 years old. Structures from Silence is from 1984! The Aphex Twin cut is from 1994. I cheated with a couple of tracks however, such as the Tollefson & Vidna/Pearce cuts, which are from 1999.

With new music coming out all the time & with my tastes changing over the years it's easy to forget what a great album Saul Stokes' Washed in Mercury is.  I'll have to pull out Zo Pilots & Outfolding too.   I am very happy to have worked in Thom Brennan's The Path Not Taken into the mix, one of my all-time favorite ambient tracks.

As I said over on my official blog post, this mix is not supposed to represent a certain time period or demonstrate evolving styles. It's just a bunch of older cuts that I sort of randomly pulled out & thought would work well together.

There is no clever theme to this new mix.  I noticed a similar feel to much of the new music I was listening to so I decided to cobble it together in a mix.

All of the music in this mix is new, either 2007 or 2008, except for the Andrew Deutsch cut which is from 2005(although it is new to me).

The music in this mix has a sort of subdued, orchestral fell to it. I started thinking about this mix listening to the new Deaf Center release.  Layers of strings create a beautiful, melancholy experience.  That pretty much describes the rest of the music in this mix.

Again, great mix Dave.  The memories of some of these tracks...  When I was in college during the late fall and winter I used to work midnights at a large retail store doing restocks (probably of cat food, cheez-its, deodorant, air filters, etc.)  It was usually just a handful of us, so I would take the in-store PA and place in front of a CD player.  SAW II was a popular choice.  By me that is.  No one else knew (or cared) what it was  ;D   Anyway, long story short - Rhubarb is one of those tracks that certainly has an indelible time and place in my mind.

Oh, I listened and tried to identify each track in this mix...I think I got a lowly 3 out of 12.

[...] Oh, I listened and tried to identify each track in this mix...I think I got a lowly 3 out of 12.

I managed to spot three in a row early on... These:

    * 01:00 Aphex Twin - rhubarb [1994]
    * 08:00 Steve Roach - Structures from Silence [1984]
    * 17:20 Biosphere - Chukhung [1997]

then a big fat zilch after that. Enjoyed the trainspotting along the way. Props to Mixmeister Michuda.

I'm listening to your 'suspended in air' mix at the moment and it's really helping me out... turn off the world and get something done for a change!

Will d/l these tonight. Thanks - the effort is very well appreciated and a great way to introduce new sounds.

Fresh from a vacation in Wisconsin's northwoods, comes the latest Low Light mix, clouds in my coffee.

I made this one for sitting around the cabin & drinking plenty of coffee on cool, misty mornings.  Because it's a morning mix it is a bit lighter, more airy than the stargazing mix that will be posted here soon.

This is a mix from our annual trip to the Wisconsin northwoods. As the title suggests it's a mix for star gazing.

As I have mentioned in other Hypnos posts, we sit out at the end of the pier and watch for shooting stars and satellites with these mixes as the soundtrack.

I limited myself to fairly new music, stuff I have been listening to a lot lately. I knew I wanted to include new music from Area C - Sea of Rains. It was commissioned by the NASA RI Space Grant Consortium and the Museum of Natural History in Providence, RI as an original score for their "Mission Moon: past, present, future" exhibit at the Museum of Natural History. It has some Nasa recordings mixed in with the music so it was a natural for this mix.

After that, the other tracks are just tunes that flow well together.

Some great choices, Dave. I've been enjoying some of the albums these come from, incl. intriguing works by Kyle Bobby Dunn, The Caretaker, and Area C. That Kabana looks familiar ;)

BTW, the graphic for one of your previous Low Light Mixes (earlier in the thread) reminded me of an image from Keith Berry's The Ear that was Sold to a Fish: definitely a release amenable to excerpting something from for a future mix.

I've got a new mix up over at Low Light Mixes (http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/).

A friend of mine told me that he had downloaded some recordings of old 78rpm records from archive.org.  The thought of old, scratchy opera recordings was too much to resist.

So that's where this mix started.  I had intended it to be similar to my shortwave mixes but it didn't exactly end up that way.  Part of the reason is my own impatience, I wanted to get a new mix posted but didn't want to take weeks to sort through the tons of possibilities presented by archive.org & other sites.

I found that the perfect compliment to the old 78's is music from The Caretaker.  His music was inspired by the ballroom scene from "The Shining".  From the Caretaker website..."The first release played and extended this theme of altering 1920's and 1930's ballroom music creating an eerie and haunted soundworld. Subsequently the sound has become darker and often more abstract over time, moving away from the initial idea of a haunted ballroom into territories involving the mind and its abilities to recall memories.

The mix sort of veers away from the old & scratchy theme about two-thirds of the way through.  It just sort of morphed on it's own as I pulled tracks.  Mixes can be funny that way, developing their own path.

N O V E M B E R   B U D D H A

This mix is called November Buddha in honor of the new Buddha Machine 2.0 (http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=145803) which was just released.  Mine is on it's way right now.  There's not much of a theme here, just a bunch of new tunes that I've been listening to lately.

The Lullaby League (http://www.myspace.com/thelullabyleagueuk) & Sleep Robot (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=13716503) tracks are new discoveries thanks to the fantastic mixes from Alan(Undershadow).  I probably have listened to these mixes more than anything else this year.  Just an absolutely fabulous collection of guitar ambient.

Most of the artists in this mix can also be found in Alan's Axescapes mixes.  A couple exceptions are Eluder (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=103844134), which is a brand new Infraction (http://www.infractionrecords.com/) release.  And Disturbed Earth (http://store.atmoworks.com/index.php?page=catalog.php?search=butterfly), an excellent recording on Atmoworks (http://store.atmoworks.com/).

Motion for Relief is the latest mix at Low Light Mixes (http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/).

I guess I am ripping of Undershadow again.

This new mix is a dubby, ambient affair.  Even though it's similar to Alan's mixes it only has one artist in common, Quantec.  This mix is not quite as beat driven, it's a bit more ambient.  I was glad to finally find a place for the Tiki Obmar track.

I am really enjoying playing this one fairly loud so that the dubby basslines reverberate all over the house.

Nice one, Dave. Well, if you're gonna rip me off <grin>, then I'll hitch a ride on your coat-tails, and throw out this link to a mix I've had up for a few months now. I hadn't posted it here because it's not especially ambient, though contains textures/atmospheres that might be appreciated by some ambienteers. Bass-ically, this is for anyone who wants to take Dave's reverberating room concept further and deeper to a floorboard-endangering level, whilst still having something musically involving to hang on to.

A first for Low Light Mixes...a Holiday mix.

Last year I downloaded a very cool holiday compilation.  It's called "That Fuzzy Feeling".  It looks like they still have downloads available but are sold out of the cd's.  You can have find it here...
http://lorecordings.greedbag.com/buy/that-fuzzy-feeling-0/?tab=description (http://lorecordings.greedbag.com/buy/that-fuzzy-feeling-0/?tab=description)

That release was the starting point for this mix, called A Northern Holiday.  There are three cuts from the compilation in the mix....Brave the Cold by Vincent Oliver and Isan...Family, Giving by Peter Broderick...Snowstorm in a Snow Globe by Fuzzy Lights.  From there I just looked for other tunes that fit the theme.

So grab some hot coco & trim the tree with some ambient-ish goodness playing in the background.

Happy Holidays.

Here's another new mix(i've had some extra free time at work), its called "Searching for Objects".  As I posted on the low light blog (http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/), the working title for this mix was "noisy, droney, scratchy".  It turned out to be more droney & scratchy than noisy.  There is some grit, some distortion, some white noise, some scratches but not too much.  I still wanted the mix to be very ambient, not too annoying or distracting.

I finished this one before I could use the new Infraction release from Sleepy Town Manufacture which would have fit perfectly.  I guess that's first up for vol. 2.

I just put up a new mix over at Low Light Mixes (http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/).

It's collection of field recordings & music called "in_transit".  The field recordings are not of the chirping birds & lapping waves variety.  They are more like street noise, rain, crowd sounds and trains, lots of trains.  I don't have a tracklist but I do have a more in depth explanation of what's in the mix(ie-Blade Runner environments) at the blog.

You can direct download it here...

"A tour de force! Low Light Mixes does it again!"

- Ambient Mix Magazine

Really, REALLY good! It was great listening to in_transit going to work this morning. The sounds of the mix were blending with the ambient sounds around me of the subway and the streets of DC. Sometimes I couldn't tell what was live and what was Memorex. Very cool! :)

I've got another mix up at Low Light Mixes (http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/).  It's called "shadows at midnight."

I've been loving the new release from Jon Hassell (http://www.amazon.com/Last-Night-Dropping-Clothes-Street/dp/B001O2MBBE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1235854335&sr=8-1) so I wanted to do a mix that had a late-night jazz sort of feel to it.  The mix is fairly straight forward, no great segues or fx triple layers of sound.  But I think the tunes flow nicely together & keep a melancholy, moody jazz feel going throughout.

Download : 110mb 60min.

I've just posted an all vocal mix over at Low Light Mixes (http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/).  A vocal mix is a rarity over at Low Light, but this one, called "Refuge", still has an ambient sort of feel to it as most of the tunes are fairly quiet.

I've got a couple of songs from Martin Grech in the mix.  His release "March of the Lonely" made it on to my best of 2008 list.  I had to restrain myself from putting in too much David Sylvian, but he did end up with two tracks.  I included an old track from Roxy Music which is a vinyl rip that I did years ago, so there are a few pops & scratches that sneak in there.

Two new mixes are up at Low Light Mixes (http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/).

They are both "rain" mixes that make generous use of field recordings mixed in with the music.  Of course some of the tunes have their own rain sounds mixed in.  Every cut in each mix has the word "rain" in the title.

One mix is a vocal mix called "I Love the Rain".

Just like last year's mix, this one uses recordings that are 80 to 100 years old & combines them with current ambient music to create a ghostly, ambient mix.

Title: New mix - slo mo
Post by: Dave Michuda on January 17, 2010, 02:43:30 PM
Here's the first mix for 2010. It's called slo_mo because all the tunes are slow & droney.

One aspect of this mix that makes it a bit different is the use of a few "stretched" tracks. I think I've mentioned this program here before, it's called "Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch". I couldn't find a link to it, but at one time, on the web, there was a version of Beethoven's 9th Symphony that had been stretched to 24 hours.

I stretched 3 songs for the mix, Eno - Music for Airports, Laetetur Cor (Choir of the Abbey of Saint Wandrille) and Budd & Eno - A Stream With Bright Fish. Those tracks along with the others combine for a very slow mix that works pretty well for sleeping(I couldn't make past the 20min mark twice last night).

And Paulstretch is an awesome tool.  I think it's been talked about elsewhere on the forum, but here's the link for anyone curious:

Post by: Dave Michuda on February 16, 2010, 07:32:34 PM

New mix for the dead of winter.  It's called "the landscape listens".

The music in this mix has a sort of lonely winter feel to it. The tracks are not too dark or depressing, they just seem to conger up images of vast, snowy landscapes.

I'm not sure if I've ever posted links to Mixcloud (http://www.mixcloud.com/), but it's a place to post mixes(duh).  Unfortunately you can't download, just streaming.  One of my favorites there is Fluid Radio (http://www.mixcloud.com/FluidRadio/).  Their mixes offer a collection of Ambient, Modern Classical, Experimental Acoustic, Folk and Abstract sounds.

I liked their stuff enough that I wanted to do my own "neo-classical" mix.  However, as I said on the Low Light Mixes blog, sometimes mixes take on a life of their own and they end going in different directions.  While searching for tracks for this mix I came across a recording of Russian sacred music, which lead me to more vocal tunes, which then ended up as 10 vocal tracks in this mix. Some of the cuts appear as recorded, others have been altered or remixed a bit.

Post by: Dave Michuda on May 18, 2010, 06:36:44 AM
I recently was given a box of old sound effects records like the one in the picture. These albums brought back a lot of memories. As a kid I would go to the public library down the street and borrow their sound effects records. I guess that was an early sign that I'd end up with music tastes that were a bit different.

This new mix is perfect for my new vinyl sound effects collection, unfortunately I finished the mix before I got the records. So I'll have to save them for the next installment in the field mixes.(I just love the look of the records so I had to at least post a pic)

For this mix, the 3rd in the field music mixes, I tried to use more natural sound and less music. There are definitely musical elements here, thanks to Spheruleus, Nigel Samways and others. I tried to pick field sounds that weren't too obtrusive. There are many sounds that are interesting to listen to, but don't work as ambient "music". After a nice quiet section of wind blowing through bamboo, hearing fireworks exploding wouldn't work for me.

The tracklist is a bit vague, as the times are even more nebulous than normal. I hope you enjoy this latest field mix.

Post by: Dave Michuda on June 11, 2010, 08:03:36 PM

I'm just going to copy & paste what I posted on my blog(too lazy & tired to come up with different copy)...

Right off the bat, I have to come clean. I stole something. I stole the idea for this mix. But I'm glad I did because I'm very excited to post this new track.

Over at SoundCloud I ran into some mixes by Astromatt. He uses sounds from music libraries and soundtracks of '60's and '70's to create great underwater themed mixes. I love the sound of these old tracks & how they work together in a mix.

Who knew that these old library albums even existed?! After some research & digging, I decided to try my hand at a similar mix.

With a lot of this music, it's very easy to cross the line into cheesy/kitchy territory. I tried to find tunes that had that old 70's undersea soundtrack feel but were still listenable by today's ambient standards. I think it works pretty well as an ambient mix, very relaxing, with a cool watery vibe.

It was a lot of fun discovering some of these old albums & I'm sure I'll visit them again.

Title: silent sorrow in empty boats
Post by: Dave Michuda on September 16, 2010, 06:22:44 PM
I have always loved a little known Genesis tune called "Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats". The last song on the end of side three(vinyl), it's a 3 minute instrumental that is more ambient than old prog rock.

I remember a thread at the Hypnos forum, a long time ago, that was a list of the best ambient tracks by non-ambient artists. I'm sure the thread was lost in the great Hypnos forum purge a few years ago, but I think I added artists like Radiohead, Daryl Hall, Peter Gabriel, etc. I think "Silent Sorrow" may be the best ambient track by a non-ambient artist.

Anyway, I've always wanted to use it in a mix so here it is. I used the track as the title for this mix but the music doesn't necessarily take on the sorrowful feel that the title suggests.

Title: new mixes w/ Hypnos music
Post by: Dave Michuda on November 15, 2010, 03:51:25 PM

I've posted a couple new mixes that I think the Hypnos community might like.  And they both feature some Hypnos artists.

First up is a mix called "Far from Home".  It's a deep space mix, hopefully the music will generate a feeling of weightlessness, of drifting in the vast expanse of space, without being too dark or dissonant.  The mix features Hypnos artists Mike Griffin, A Produce & Austere.

Also just posted is a mix of generally pleasant, "pretty" ambient music, called "Positively Ambient".  I had a request from a listener to put together something "optimistic" or "euphoric" in tone.  Not sure if this exactly fits that description, but it's a nice, soothing hour of music with Hypnos alums, James Johnson & Jeff Pearce making a cameo.

Cool, Dave. I'm downloading both, and looking forward to giving them a listen.

I'm proud to be part of the more rugged, macho ambient mix, comparatively speaking!  ;)

Cromag - thanks for telling your friends!

Mike - Maybe that should be the theme of the next mix, "rugged, macho" ambient, call it "Man-bient".
Title: in foreign lands
Post by: Dave Michuda on December 04, 2010, 03:38:17 PM
Just posted the latest low light mix, "In Foreign Lands."

The idea for this mix started with my love for the sound of Djivan Gasparyan's music. He plays the duduk, a double reed instrument related to the oboe. It's got a great melancholy, other-worldy feel to it.  The rest of the music is a collection of ethnic recordings, shortwave broadcasts, field recordings & westernized versions of ethnic music.

I've been cranking out mixes at the rate of about one a week(i need a new hobby).  Here are the three most recent mixes...

Television Sky
Some cool electronica style music discovered at the end of 2010 with artists like aKido, Lights Out in Asia, Tropics, Morgan Packard, Jon Hopkins & more.

Quintessential Jazz
I came across an interesting list here... Quintessential Jazz Songs (http://www.jazz24.org/jazz100.html).  It's a listener compiled list of the 100 best jazz tunes.  It's a fun read.  I took some of the tracks to make my first all jazz mix.

Distant Transmissions
The fourth and possibly final entry in my shortwave mix series.  More ambient music combined with washes of static & eerie shortwave broadcasts.

Title: Halloween mix
Post by: Dave Michuda on October 26, 2011, 06:00:33 PM
I am generally not a big fan of dark ambient, so I knew making a Halloween mix was going to be interesting.

As I was looking through my music I came across "The Twin Peaks Archive" by David Lynch & Angelo Badalamenti.  I thought, now there is some dark-ish music that would be cool to use in a Halloween mix.

Three Twins Peaks tunes made it into the final mix, "Shadowland", & helped establish a sort of film noir feel.  There are definite dissonant moments but hopefully the mix is more creepy & shadowy rather than outright scary & annoying.

Title: new vocal mix
Post by: Dave Michuda on November 13, 2011, 09:30:11 AM
After listening to a friends Spotify playlist of music from Nick Drake, John Martyn, Wilco & more, I decided to do my own mix of vocal tunes - psalms & lullabies.

I don't do vocal mixes very often but this still has that low light mix feel to it.  All the songs are laid back, some acoustic, some atmospheric, all pretty darn good.

Wow, I haven't posted new mixes to this thread in quite some time.  So I'll just list a bunch here with quick descriptions & links(in reverse chronological order).

Sunday Morning Music - Inspired by a new Wilco tune called "One Sunday Morning."  Works well with sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee & reading the paper.

Just in case, you should have a crash and burn list in case the rover crashes or mysteriously disappears.  NASA (Never A Straight Answer) is notorious for spending billions on total failures...

Title: stretched & slow mo-ed
Post by: Dave Michuda on November 07, 2012, 07:13:25 AM
I haven't posted updates in a while but I thought my latest mix was odd enough to warrant a mention here.

The mix is called "s  t  r  e  t  c  h  e  d   beyond recognition".  All the music has been stretched or slowed down so much that the tunes are unrecognizable from the originals.

I used a great little program called Paul Stretch which you can find here... http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/ (http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/)
It take music and stretches or slows it down dramatically but still keeps it very musical.  I've used the program a few times for mixes in the past but never for creating an entire mix.

All the tracks are slowed by at least 10x to 15x.  The slowed down result is perfect for meditation, sleeping or daydreaming.  It's kind of amazing to me how it was possible to create something entirely new from the source material.  Steve Reich's Six Marimbas seemed to work well because it's so repetitive that you still got a sense of movement even slowed way down.

You can find it here...

or here...

00:00    Cliff Martinez - First Sleep
05:30    Steve Reich - Six Marimbas
12:15    Noto & Sakamoto - By This River
21:00    Anonymous 4 - medie noctis tempus
21:40    Tangerine Dream - Tangram
34:45   Steve Reich - Six Marimbas
52:50    Budd & Eno - A Stream with Bright Fish
1:00:00    end

I haven't posted about any of my mixes in a while but I figured this one was worth calling attention to.

It's a guest mix by the Hypnos Forums' own chris23.  Chris had never done a mix when I asked him to do one and he was a little hesitant but decided to give it a shot.  the result is an outstanding mix of neo-classical ambient goodness.

I have not posted anything in this thread in a long time but I wanted to call attention again to the Ambient Dishwasher mix that Hypnos forum members made happen.

For anybody not familiar with "Dave's Dishwasher Drone" take a look at the original Hypnos forum thread here...

http://www.hypnos.com/smf/index.php?topic=8031.0 (http://www.hypnos.com/smf/index.php?topic=8031.0)

The mix features great music from forum members Forrest Fang, Igneous Flame, Castleview, The Circular Ruins and Seren Ffordd.  Plus my son's first attempt at ambient.  All the tunes use the same :20 sec recording of my dishwasher as the starting point.

Streaming version on Mixcloud is here...

Downloadable version is here...

Thanks so much to all the members who participated in this random experiment. :)

My most recent mix is "Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still."  I really like how this one turned out so I want call attention to it here.

The mix combines Edison cylinders recorded around 1906 to 1908 with modern cuts that may sound old or just fit in with the scratchy feel.  Most of the old tracks are effected in some way.  Sometimes I slowed the original way down, other times echo and reverb were added.  For many of them the original is combined with the effected version to create some bizarre other-worldly sound.
