Title: Top Oophoi discs
Post by: Joe R on July 28, 2014, 07:11:03 PM
I need a list of everyone's top 5 Oophoi discs, just because I plan on making a serious attempt to get back in tune with his otherworldly music.

My top 5 (from what I recall) would be:

Arpe Di Sabbia
Bardo (intense!)
Hymns To A Silent Sky
The Rustling Of Leaves (So evocative!)

I'd love to hear other opinions/suggestions...

My Oophoi collection is far from complete, but these are my favorite five releases among the ones I own:

Celestial Geometry (with Tau Ceti)
Subterranea (with Tau Ceti)
Time Fragments (1-3)
The Rustling of Leaves

I have Arpe De Sabbia, which is on your list, but it never really grabbed me. I think I've only listened to it 2 or 3 times, tops.

All great choices mentioned, from the ones I've listened to at least.  Arpe di Sabbia is definitely worth the second visit, especially disc 1.

I would add for consideration Spirals of Time- it's a two disc (?) epic journey of subtle, quiet power.  There are a couple of nice pleasant surprises, one of which is contained in the last track.

Also Mare Vaporum- this is one that is basically a single, slowly evolving loop that does it like any of the best of Eno's or Roach's long form classics.  It's not too simple though as it has a lot of moving parts and does meander at times from the basic loop, but it has a good mix of high and low tones and for me is one of his most hypnotic and relaxing albums, not a boring work but not overly dark or ominous either.

You can't lose with a track called "Lord of the Starfields"  :D  It's a fitting title.

I agree with the choices, too.  Here are my choices:

Signals From The Great Beyond
Archaic Oceans (collab w TauCeti)
The Spirals of Time
The Martian Chronicles (collab w Seren Ffordd)

Spirals Of Time - Still my favorite
Mare Vaporum - I have always resonated with this one
Athlit - the Cd that sparked my interest in working with Gigi
The Rustling Of Leaves - this one is special to me as I have vivid memories of lying in bed in Gigi's guest house listening to this on a Cd Walkman and drifting off and thinking how beautiful and pastel it was.
Dreamfields - please excuse what could appear to be shameless self promotion but, this album is special to me due to the deeply personal level of back and forth collaboration on this release. Gigi kept calling it his most psychedelic work, and the concept of the directions was his. I also have memories of taking a daylong retreat out in nature and listening to the final mix and master and being completely lost in the bliss of the moment of the atmospheres blending with nature. He was really pushing for avant guard sounds, movement and startling artifacts and instances on this one.
Bardo - I will pick a 6th one to be fair, I like this one for its sheer intense power.

ooh, ah, which ones to choose? in no particular order....with a bit of a cheat...

The Dreaming of Shells
Dreams (original 3" disc set)
Three Lights at the End of the World

+ don't forget the 'compilations' - Time Fragments Vol 1 - 6.

+ collaberations:
Liquid Ghosts - Camera Obscura.
Wouivre - with Klaus Weise.
Nocturnes - with Paradin.

and I've just remembered (how could I forget): The Rustling of leaves.....

added - just read all the other lists - 'Rustling' appears in a high number of them....

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys...

The Rustling Of Leaves seems to be on several lists, and I remember that also being one of my favorites. That may be the one I plug in first tonight. And Lord Of The Starfields is indeed a beautiful track... and I completely forgot about Nocturnes- that was terrific.

From the discs that I have which I will list I can narrow it down to a favorite track....Lord of the Starfields from Athlit.

Dreamfields w/PV
Distance to Zero w/PV
Il Silenzo di Dio
Signals from the great beyond

Both cds that team Oophoi with Paul Vnuk are very special....sometimes you need another to bring the best out of each other
