Title: Where can I read more about Robert Davies?
Post by: TowardsADistantWhole on August 25, 2018, 07:01:13 AM
Hello All,

I am an occasional lurker on this forum, although I am not sure whether I have ever posted here..

I have been a huge fan of Robert Davies for some time now. I find his sonic constructs to take me to places that few other artists are able to. Introspective music at its finest!

I would like to read more about him - his inspirations, production techniques/synths used etc - and was wondering whether anybody could point me in the right direction, as I can't seem to find anything.

Many thanks :)

Hi there.
Great to hear you like Robert's music so much.
He does have his unique sound, and is so reliably listenable from album to album.
And as you say, introspective, but also relaxing and somehow mysteriously intriguing.

I master and release his work on DataObscura, and collaborate with him on The Winterhouse projects.

Yes, he is somewhat absent from the web, and from social media generally.
I did put some things up here years ago ::  www.dataobscura.com/robertdavies/
but as you probably know, it's really just visuals with nothing personal or descriptive.
I must try to get more from the lad !

I can tell you a few things about him.
He's a really nice guy.
He lives in upper New York State in the USA, near the Finger Lakes.
He holds down a couple of jobs to make ends meet, which keeps him very busy beyond the music.
And he is not very web savvy. Or particularly tech-oriented.
I do know he records into the Reaper DAW, and uses software primarily.

He trained as a visual artist, and has had local shows.
But he is very committed to the music he makes, and is very reliable for working on new material.

Musically he is, so he has told me, especially inspired by Aglaia (on Stefano Musso's label), and Eno.
But of course he is also inspired by nature, and by the deep communion he finds with nature.
And by curious writers in the vein of H.P. Lovecraft and Algernon Blackwood.

I really should get him to write something about himself and his influences, and post it.
But he is somewhat reclusive.
I will see what I can do.

I should add that I have worked with him for many years, but have never met him face to face.

Hi APK,

My sincere apologies for just getting back to you! I only realized that I had a reply to my question when I was checking my junk mail when I was on holiday a short while back.

Many thanks for the information! I have learned more about the man from your reply than I have through all my searches. This little teaser has unfortunately just whet my appetite for more information, however..

I would love to know some more about his production techniques, choice of soft synths, and, I guess, his creative process as a whole.

It is incredible that you guys have never met in person, yet produce some of the deepest and most mysterious music around (I LOVE your track "The Depths of Winter.")

Please get on his case and drag him out of his dungeon!

All the best.
