I love his sequencer driven/rhythmic/tribal music nearly just as much.

Seems that most of my calmer favorites were mentioned.
One piece I always return to is "The Eternal Expanse". I believe it is one of his finest, purely ambient/textural pieces.
The Passing is beautiful. And of course MC&SS, especially disc 2 & 3.

Max Corbacho is great in this area as well. I love Arte Magnetica and Splendid Labyrinths.
Also, Jonn Serrie!

I'm a big fan of good symphonic orchestration and I love strings more than anything. All the pieces here are exceptionally beautiful. Mahler was a great admirer of Wagner throughout his life. I myself am a great admirer of Wagner. He created melodies that are not of this world. And he has the most unique layers of sound that I know. His stereo image of the strings is extraordinary and you experience the sound floating up in space. I have seen three Wagner operas so far (Tannhäuser, Parsifal, and yesterday Tristan & Isolde). You have to like Wagner. But those who like it will love his music forever.

The Liebestod at the end of Tristan und Isolde is one of my very favorite pieces of music. So extraordinary and profound.
I can imagine it is even more powerful after listening to the entire opera. I just haven't got around to it yet. 4 hours (?) seems a bit much. Maybe, some day. :)

Samual Barber :: Adagio for Strings

Possibly the most beautiful 8 + minutes of music ever written?.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3MHeNt6Yjs

I think it is "just" one of many.
For example, here's a piece that is more or less similar in sound and profoundly moving as well, the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th symphony.

Just listened to it on Bandcamp.
A beautiful and varied album, very refined ambient music. A wonderful collaboration and a nice blend of their individual styles/soundworlds, although I think I hear more Michael Stearns than Steve Roach so maybe Steve took more of a background role.

Mozart - Ave Verum Corpus

A stunning, short choral piece by Mozart composed about half a year before his death.

Psychonavigation 2 is my favorite of the bunch. Some very atmospheric pieces (Blue Shift is like being trapped in an alien vessel) and at the center probably one of the highlights of the entire FAX catalog: The Fate of Energy. Such a cool track.

Inoue

I was just listening to Inland; a masterpiece of subtle ambient music. A true highlight of the entire genre.
Any news on Tetsu Inoue's mysterious disappearance?
I suppose not...  :(

Now Playing / Chillwave

Chillwave is the calm and subtle subgenre of 80s inspired Synthwave.

There's some amazing electronic music to be found within this genre that I think certain members will appreciate, especially those who posted in the "Downpipe" thread.  8)

Here are a couple of carefully selected tracks. A great Youtube channel for this music is Electronic Gems.
Any more fans of Chillwave or Synthwave in general?

Downtown Binary - Lost

Steve Roach' latest.
I'm very impressed with the variety and level of detail of this album. This isn't a "born from the moment" thing but an album that he has really worked on for a longer period of time.

Wagner's Liebestod, the aria at the end of his opera Tristan und Isolde, has been haunting me a long time.
Horowitz recorded this piano transcription by Franz Liszt a few days before his death.

Steve Roach - Molecules of Motion
This, and other Projekt titles, are on sale today on Bandcamp, so I picked it up. I like it okay, but I'm less partial to the sequenced work that Roach releases. I much prefer the drift-based soundscapes.

I like it but it's the final track "Empath Current" that stands out. Wonderful piece.

Currently listening to Max Corbacho - Arte Magnetica
Again some breathtakingly gorgeous tracks in there. The 1st, 5th and 6th are just... wow.

Everything and Nothing / Re: Epic music?
July 29, 2018, 03:24:36 AM
"Epic" you say?
Even if you're not into classical music, the finale of Gustav Mahler's 8th symphony is just something you have to hear before you die, at least 10 times.

Take a little time getting to know this fragment. When you "get it", it will hit you like a truck.
You don't even need to listen to the rest of the symphony (even though it's always better to listen to these fragments in their proper context; after getting to know the entire symphony).
