Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: Whatever happened to....?
« on: November 28, 2015, 03:25:00 AM »
What happened to Tetsu Inoue is still a mystery it seems:

First let me say that Steve Roach will always be one of my favorite artists in music. However, recently all that talk on his website, album descriptions etc., is starting to annoy me. It has annoyed me before, but it seems to be getting worse. It's so full of adjectives and hyperbole and it's not exactly modest either.

I understand that promotion is necessary and I appreciate the enthusiasm and effort that is put into these writings, but for "outsiders" these texts (which are copied by other sites) may actually be a big turn off. For a lot of people it may appear like a whole lot of new age bla bla.

Honestly, Steve, if you are reading this, I love your music, it means more to me than I can put into words, but when you or your associates talk about your music, I think a more humble and objective approach would serve your music better. Your music stands on its own. It doesn't need all those fancy words and descriptions.

I also really like Redshift. I've been playing "Glide" from the album "Toll" countless times over the last months. Retro done right.

Redshift - Toll

Glide is THE track I've been waiting to hear from them. Superb!

Well, there's something for everyone. I prefer his later tribal albums. Great sound, deep trances and grooves. Fever Dreams 2, The Serpent's Lair and Dream Tracker are right up there among my favorites. Even more recent, Monuments of Ecstasy is very nice. I think he is still going strong in most if his styles.

I'm not excluding the possibility that there's something under the surface of these pieces, something I'm not hearing yet. Some of his music takes time to get attuned to. But for now, I prefer any other sequencer piece I've heard from him. Favorites include: Harmonia Mundi (Empetus), Living the Dream (Life Sequence), Lifeforming (Kairos), Hyperportal (Core), Arc of Passion (Arc of Passion) and more.

I've listened to the samples and I'm not quite taken with it. There's something basic and samey about its sound. Almost minimalistic. Most pieces are rather laidback. I prefer his more energetic, futuristic sound. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore some of his sequencer pieces, but these aren't really my style.

Steve Roach - The Magnificent Void
This album was a life-changing purchase for me in the 90s and I often return to it for inspiration (Infinite Shore and Altus are some of my favorite tracks in the genre). But I rarely find the time to listen to it from start to finish, in one listening. I did so this past weekend and it was a religious experience. I know some people consider this album to be over-hyped; I'm not one of those people.

Ha! Pop music is overhyped.
TMV is a piece of art music that deverves all the recognition it gets, and more. I think in fact many "modern classical composers" would be in awe once they heard what Steve Roach has achieved on this album and some of his other masterpieces.

Thought I'd restore the video of the original post. I also added a second piece by Chesnokov, listen to the deep bass in that one!

Anton Bruckner - Symphony No. 8
I've been pretty much obsessed with this symphony in the last months. The more I listen, the better it gets.
Here's a fantastic performance of the finale:

Steve Roach & friends - The Ambient Expanse

Is it just me or is The Eternal Expanse one of Roach' very finest pieces? It's sublime. I've been listening to it all day.

Steve Roach - Mystic Chords and Sacred Spaces 2 ie parts 3 and 4.

Listening to the free download whilst amazon deliver the CD. It is wonderful.

It sure is. The final three tracks of part 3 are transcendent.

I'm anticipating this game very much. It looks very promising and beautiful.
