Hypnos News and Announcements / Re: Hypnos 2011 outlook

I've been out of the loop for over a year due to health issues and it looks like Hypnos has been very prolific in that time with some excellent releases.   I've wasted no time this week in ordering all of the Hypnos releases from the Herion album onwards and if the sound samples and excellent feedback on here is anything to go by,  I'm in for a real treat when the CD's arrive.   Good to see Hypnos still going from strength to strength.  :)

My introduction to the music of Seren Fforrd was the track "Strange Atrractor" on the "Sounds of a Universe..." compilation.   Immediately impressed by his offering on that album, I made a mental note to check out more of Andy's work.

I recently purchased "Veils, Shadows" and can honestly say that this is one of my favourite ambient albums of 2008.  The intricately crafted soundscapes on "Veils..." show an artist who is creatively on the ascendancy.  The ominous opening track "Slow Burning" is disconcerting yet compelling and extremely beautiful.  The rest of the album doesn't let up either in terms of maintaining the high quality.

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Andy at a UK electronic music festival and he comes across as an artist (and not to mention a thoroughly nice guy) who's extremely passionate yet very modest about what he does.  Personally, I can't wait to hear more from Seren Ffordd and am very much looking forward to any future releases that may be in the pipeline.   Hopefully in the future I too would love to see a Seren Ffordd release on the main Hypnos label.

FLashback day:

The Lucy Show, UNDONE - a real gem from 1985, too bad these guys never got huge.

The Lucy Show - Wow!  There's a much missed blast from the past.  I remember discovering them by accident in a local record store.  This absolutely awesome track was playing and I had no idea what it was or who it was by.  I enquired and it turned out to be The Lucy Show's "Leonardo DaVinci" (extended version on the Ephemeral 12").   That was enough to get me hooked.  Undone was a brilliant album, it's a pity the band didn't get the recognition that their talent deserved.

Hypnos Label Releases / Re: CD release: Steve Brand - Bridge to Nowhere

I was reading the above earlier and the description of the music really aroused my curiousity.   The MP3 samples were duly listened to and I would wholeheartedly agree with the comments above especially the remark about the artist tapping into another reality.    I really enjoyed what I heard so I checked out the MP3 samples for "Soul Spiral" and that's even more "out there" if that's possible!

Suffice to say, an order has just been placed for this two items along with some other titles and I can't wait to hear both of the Steve Brand albums in their entirety.  :-)

Currently playing:  Between Interval - "Autumn Continent"

Definitely my favourite Between Interval album,  highlight for me is the brooding fourth track "the tides of time" with the gentle sequence accompanied by the haunting melody over the top.

My copy received yesterday which even by Hypnos's high standards is pretty good going (took less than a week to get here - UK).

As soon as I first heard about this compilation a few months ago, I knew it was going to be an obligatory purchase.  My reasons for that?  Well, first up and forgive the fanboy mentality but it's a Hypnos compilation and from the high quality of previous compilations,  I knew even if "...Subatomic" just matched those in quality it would be an essential buy and an album I'd come back to time and time again.   Secondly there's the mix of artists - some familiar faces and some whose music is new to me.   Yet from previous compilations, I knew all the tracks would blend perfectly into a cohesive and very satisfying "whole".

My verdict?  Well from start to finish, a fantastic album - top selection of artists and music which is quite simply breathtaking.   The blend of beauty and bleakness that's sustained throughout the course of the album is spot on and it showcases very nicely just what makes the Hypnos label so special.   I read Mike's comment that this album has attracted a lot of interest - rightly so IMO.

Ok, so did it live up to my expectations?  You bet it did.  I love the more spacey feel to this compilation and it definitely isn't a case of Hypnos playing safe and releasing "Sounds of a Universe..." Part II.   Well, I for one can't wait until the next compilation.

Austere - Pulse

Absolutely awesome,  I listened to this on headphones at a fairly low volume whilst sat down by the sea earlier.   Within 20 mins my mind was some place else totally due to combined effect of the music and the sound of gulls and the waves.  The old adage about "less is more" is definitely true with Austere's music.

Now playing:  A Produce/M Griffin - "Altara"

Jeff Greinke - "Wide View"
Rapoon - "Time Frost"
Between Interval - "Secret Observatory"

Definitely a chilled start to my weekend with that playlist!  :)

As a newcomer to the forum,  I'd like, as my first post on here, to echo the above sentiments about the excellent customer service.  My last order took slightly longer than usual to arrive (Hypnos are generally extremely quick) and I found Lena to be extremely courteous, helpful and reassuring when she responded to my email asking if my order had been posted - the order actually turned up the following day and the delay was down to UK customs rather than Hypnos!   It's this friendly personal touch that IMO makes Hypnos an absolute pleasure to order from.

Regarding the music on the Hypnos label,  I am a newcomer to that as well and boy, what a voyage of discovery it has been.  I have managed to track down all of the in print Hypnos releases and I am absolutely staggered as to how a label can maintain such a high level of quality on all it's releases whilst embracing such a diverse range of musical styles.

I've read through the list of forthcoming releases for 2008 and there's so much to look forward to.

Huge respect to Hypnos and all the artists who have released work under its banner!
