Yeah, I imagine this is a fine line for musicians as well. You don't want to repeat yourself, yet you strive for your own signature sound as well.

Offthesky & Pleq - A Thousand Fields
Pretty neat experimental ambient from two of the most creative forces in that niche. Very dark, lonely, desolate tracks, featuring the sounds of broken machines, wistful violins, and some dramatic cinematic overtures. This wasn't the masterpiece I was hoping for, but it is a great album nonetheless and well worth a careful listening. Beautiful packaging from Infraction.

Jacob Newman and Devin Underwood - The Vivid Unmapped
A 2011 release from DataObscura. I recall Joe R. and others singing the praises of this album a while back. I picked up the digital version on Bandcamp last week and have been enjoying it immensely. It has a little bit of everything: a classic ambient feel with warm, drifting synth notes and a bit of an experimental angle, with found founds, interesting sonic manipulations, etc. The atmosphere is great--not too dark, not too fluffy, and somewhat mysterious.
Joe, that The Boats release seems to be majorly OOP. So, if you want to mail it to me for safe keeping, I'll understand
