Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Re: Presonus Studio One

Studio One is a really fantastic DAW. I come from years of using Cubase and it follows a lot of that paradigm. Everybody has there own preferences in a recording platform and Studio One has really fit that bill for my productions. It is incredibly easy to use, very intuitive and takes the best interface/workflow ideas of many products on the market into its design. Version 2 is such an incredible advancement as well.

John clued me in to this forum topic and just wanted to give you some info about my mastering services.

I am sure you are learning what mastering services can provide you in terms of value for your project. The two fundamental areas that stand out are the following:

Quality control - Mastering will provide a last step for quality control before the project is released as a commercial product. Checking for digital errors, disc errors, pops, clicks ect.

Final Sound Check - A second opinion with an engineer that has a well treated room and full range monitoring environment will greatly improve the quality of your release. Many artist mix with smaller near-field monitors and or studio headphones. Mastering on a full range speaker will reveal problem areas missed, particularly in the low end range. Checks are made to track levels, track timbre balance, stereo imaging, and dynamics.

At Soniclayers Mastering I offer a free evaluation master of one of your tracks. This gives you a chance to hear the possibilities of what my mastering services can provide you.

I master all styles of music and am not limited to just ambient music. So bring on the metal!

Let me know if you have any questions by contacting me directly through my website.

This is a really nice album! Very subtle in its dynamics but really gets under the skin with repeated listens. Uplifting work. Check it out!

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: Top 10 Ambient/Space Music albums
« on: February 05, 2011, 01:46:40 PM »

I'll take a shot at this.

Top 10 in no particular order:

Strata - Steve Roach, Robert Rich
Dreamtime Return - Steve Roach
Baraka Soundtrack - Michael Stearns
Desert Solitaire - Steve Roach, Michael Stearns, Kevin Braheny
Numena - Robert Rich
Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces - Steve Roach
Origins - Steve Roach
The Future Buddha - David Parsons
The Lost Pieces - Steve Roach
Below Zero - Robert Rich

Very nice textures and sounds. Love the cover art. Very Steve Roach "Dynamic Stillness" like.

Thanks! It was a lot of fun to create. Your video for Black Trees Among Amber Skies was just as powerful. Enjoyed it a lot.

Thank you. Glad you are enjoying the film. I wanted to bring some perspective to the music that may reach people in a different way than just listening to short sound examples.

I would like to present to you a documentary film exploring both the inspiration and creative

process behind the album Voices of the Ancients. I created this film using still shot

photography taken on some of my explorations throughout Mesa Verde, Bandelier Monument,

and Chaco Canyon. The film is available for viewing at these locations:

Most of my synths go directly into my ADDAs. There are a few that have very low output levels that need extra gain that I send through some type of preamp gain. The problem with using a straight ahead microphone preamp is that you will also need a DI. This can add up quickly in terms of price per channel. This is why using a mixer that can accept both line level and microphone signals is cheaper. Preamps, depending on the color, can add some extra weight to the sound.
