I've showed a friend some ambient that I enjoy, Mike Griffin, Oophoi and others in the same genre.

The guy said:

'It's lifeless simple and morbid'

On the other hand he said he enjoys a lot this one:

Do you think a pretty video and images makes a bad/unnoticed track interesting and vice versa?

As you may know, I'm building a ''middleweight'' ambient recording home studio. I've been undecided since the beginning (about a year and a half ago), which interface to pick up, so I've been buying everything else, leaving the interface to the end.

First I was looking into a all in one solution, the Yamaha 01V96i, because of the tactile feel.
Then I was thinking that it would be better to focus on the conversion instead of a full kit, investing later in a Mackie MCU pro DAW controller.

Then I was interested in the RME Fireface UFX, the drivers are rock solid they say, but unfortunately it only has 12 inputs, to expand it I would had to buy another AD/DA converter and plug it by adat. So the price would be like the Antelope Orion or more...

As you may know, I own several digital and analog synths, 10 by now.

So I bought a lot of Mogami cables and a TRS patchbay and I've been doing some ambient recording tests using my synths with my 6 track Zoom H6. I'm so happy with the results, that I can't wait any longer for a proper audio interface.

I went back again to the Antelope Zen Studio, now that should be properly reviewed.
I've noticed besides the 12 inputs on the box, it has an additional 8 inputs by DSUB 25 connector, making a total of 20 inputs, perfect for my current array of synths, with no additional cost of another adat converter.

What you think of this kit:

Zen Studio

Mogami Gold Multicore TRS <> DSub 25 (Plugged into my TRS Patchbay)

RME Raydat

What do you think of the Orion 32?

Would it be a better investment? An alternative kit involving the Orion 32 maybe?

Then the Midas M32 is around the corner for 3K + euros, arghhh! :)

What cables do you use to connect your synths?

My setup is going to be like this:

Patchbay (Samson S-Patch Plus)

and into a RME Fireface UFX.

Do you record in mono or stereo? (adding fx and panning later in daw)

Is it needed to use balanced cables? Seems most synths use normal high impedance signal like electric guitars.

Any recomendations? Thanks!

Hi all,

So a guy in my country has this piece of gear for sale. It's a rare analog filter, 1000 units were made, but is this filter good for ambient?

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / DACs

I need some advice regarding DACs.

The main purpose is listening to FLACs on my working pc. I'm purchasing a pair of Adams A77X for this.

So my options so far are:

Dangerous Music Source

Benchmark DAC1

SPL Crimson

Grace 902

Let me know what you think.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / What synths did O÷phoi used?

I really enjoy listening to his works, unfortunately I can't find any info about what gear did he used.

I see a Fizmo, Korg Z1, Waldorf Q and a Korg MS 2000 in his most famous photo and a bunch of dat machines?

I know some artists here collaborated with him, so maybe you know more than I do :)

Rest in Peace.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Help me finishing my ambient setup :)
« on: January 19, 2014, 09:06:03 PM »
Hello, first time user, great forum!

I'm building a setup for ambient music creation.

I've decided to go hardware, my goal is to layer all the synths at same time for some long and lush ambient pads and drones, the sound is to be relaxing, meditative...

So after a year of researching in my free time I got this setup:

Roland V-Synth v 2.0
Korg Z1
Novation Supernova II keyboard
Korg MS 2000 BR
Access Virus B desktop
Yamaha TG-33

Edirol UM-880
Novation SL 25 MKII

Lexicon PCM 70

So any tips regarding more tools to complement/finish my setup would be appreciated!

I'm looking for:

.Good synths for ambient pads/drones to complement existing ones without too much crossing with my current material.

.Field capture recorder and mic

.Mixer with audio interface

I've been looking at this one:

01V96i | Mixers | Products | Yamaha

But other options would be appreciated

.Good microphone to capture singing bowls and other instruments (gongs, sitars etc)

.Intuitive DAW software, the yamaha 01v96i seems optimized for cubase AI not sure if this is the most intuitive DAW?

. Good speakers, been looking at these genelecs:

Genelec M040 - Dream big. Then make it happen

. Headphones, currently I have a shure SE 215 in ear phones, but I'm looking for a more practical ones easier to put on/off the head like:
