Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: What is Youtube to you?
« on: April 02, 2014, 03:11:07 PM »
Concerning auditioning music,I use You Tube to hear complete tracks before purchasing a FLAC version elsewhere. The audio quality as mentioned is horrible on You Tube but for a one time listen,it is fine.Bandcamp is my default site for listening first. If the music I want to hear is not there,I go to You Tube.
Similar to Chris,I will not buy anything,or nearly anything without hearing the complete track.I remember in the day going to my local record store and playing the complete LP or CD before buying. As an example,a recent artist who I greatly enjoy and have 8 titles of put up a 23 minute track for purchase.Out of those 23 minutes,20 were ambient bliss,3 were noise.I did not buy.If I had not heard that 3 minutes of noise prior on Bandcamp or You Tube,I would have purchased and it would have gone into the bin.
Sorry,a 30 second or 90 clip of a 20 minute track in 2014 does not cut it.
I have also noticed that on BC,pricing is all over the map (cannot figure out how an artist determines the price in the first place) but that yes,in some cases downloads are more expensive than the physical CD which baffles me.Plus then you have all the different currencies and exchange rates.I do think that all music is worth something.Even if an artists is offering something for free,if I enjoy it and will listen to it over and over, well worth the price of admission. After all,you can choose to buy or not, listen or not.Pay or not.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Grammys/Kraftwerk
« on: January 28, 2014, 12:10:03 AM »
Watched bits of the Grammys yesterday.Since I am not into MOR music,it meant nothing to me.Actually sad what passes for music now. Daft Punk are kinda of cool with the robots( hmmnn wonder where they got that)
At the televised introduction,LL Cool J goes on and on thanking no name hip hop artists,American Idol, current rock acts- all of whom will be forgotten more or less in a few years about their influence on music, no mention of Kraftwerk.
However I saw that Kraftwerk got a lifetime achievement award. At a seperate ceremony along with Ringo Starr,Isley Brothers and others.
Ralf spoke for a minute. That is 55 seconds longer than he has spoken to the public in some 30 years.
Kraftwerk are so under rated for what they have contributed to modern music. No hip hop,no EDM,no electronica,no ambient without them.
If you are lucky enough to see them live in 2014, you should.I am.Granted Ralf is the only original member left but I saw them last time think it was 2007, and it was mind boggling amazing. In fact, I was the local contact on behalf of the promoter as they knew I enjoyed their music. Spoke to Ralf and Florian when I could. They were very civilised and cultured. Ralf actually knew the current acts and wanted to clubbing. Yes,they wanted to know about cycling in Montreal and where they could rent bikes.

I purchased this year mostly downloads (lossless) and a few CDs.I do tend to listen for music that is similar to my past likes but that has a slightly new feel to it.

Deepchord-Electrostatic Soundfields
Blamstrain-Sunday Dub Live
Material Object-Indiana Drones/Ambient Mix 4
Ashtoreth's Gate-Shadow of the Bowman
Steve Hillage-Dreamtime Submersibles
BOC-Reach for the dead
Variant-Thru the Cosmos
The Angling Loser-Author of the Twilight

Thanks for the Expo 70 Drone on,another winner from you. Never heard of him but the art work and that album is very cool. I looked around his website, some of it is very dark and spooky but some is very light in feel. Sort of like FLying Saucer Attack or early Klaus.
Talk of Steve,I put on Slow Heat today. I read tday that it was the hottest ever on record in Death Valley.

Besides the first track, the new HB is to my ears going back to the White Arcades in mood, not in instrumentation.Darker and a bit nostalgic. Only one song with piano but way better than his recent output. If you are looking for the Eno/piano phase, this is not it.He has done that to death.
Wire Train-Chamber of Hellos, very underated guitar pop band from San Fran from the early 80s.
Loops of Your Heart-And Never Ending, from The Field in a TD way from 74,sequencing.

Harold Budd-Jane on Darla.Ignored his last several,in fact since Avalon Sutra but this one is back to basics more or less. Close to the White Arcades.Serene, even a bit dark except for track 1,a bit odd.
Boards of Canada on Warp-Have not had anything by them since Trans Canada Highway but this new single is quite amazing. 5 minutes of travel.Spooky video.
Public Service Broadcasting-Inform.This is one of my favorites from the last year.Have their two Eps,now the new album. Post rock/electronica, early OMD meets Mogwai.Very cool idea. They use old PSB films as lyrics/vocals and videos, excellent recording as well.

In the February issue of Esquire USA ( if you are into that) there is a 12 page article on the USPS and the why/ what of the increases. Seems they lost 15 billion! In 2012 and had/ have about 3 days reserve before going bankrupt. And yes,it seems the increase for the most part is to shore up the pension fund for future employees.
I have no problem going to lossless downloads but for those that still want to ship CDs,look into Fed Ex or UPS,it does not take much to set up an account, even commercial.I just got 4 CDS ( not avail with a download) from California to NY by UPS and was charged $12, got it in 5 days with tracking.
Drone On,it's tough all over :o,but continue to support our music please.

Drone on,you will like the Echospace, the second CD is worth the price
Is the new Sylvian all instrumental? Any Sylvian vocals? Any noise parts? Samples are interesting.

I cannot comment that it an inferior way from the artist but from my point of view as a collector,it is now better,as long as it is in a lossless format. And I come from lps, tapes and CDs.I have no attachment to CDs and back up my music. But that is another thread.

The USPS is going broke,or are broke due to the various reasons Mike mentioned and the future in shipping lies with Fex Ex,UPS,DHL,etc... Their rates are all over depending on if you are commercial, residential,if you have an account but what I get is a solid, never fail delivery system. I have had items shipped from California to New York and was charged $5, cannot figure it out but there you go. Never had a shipment lost and if they day 2 days or 5 days,it is that.
Or from Montreal to Vancouver for $12 by UPS.
I ship all my work related materials by courrier, rarely use Canada post except for local letters.
I can tell you I will not pay $10 or $15 to have 1 CD shipped. I have already gone the FLAC download route. It is just the way it is.Hard copy product of music,or even DVDs and books is on the way out.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: William Basinski- where to start?
« on: January 16, 2013, 10:15:48 PM »
Thanks so far. Any one heard Water music? I will start with Loops 1.
" better than Eno" was straight from a Pitchfork review.
Yesterday I plugged in my trusty Revox B77 in with a few of my old tapes and sure enough, they were not in the best shape.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / William Basinski- where to start?
« on: January 16, 2013, 12:05:32 AM »
I have heard about this artist but finally got around to read reviews. I am may behind the trends after 25 years of collecting but just getting to this guy.The reviews, especially the Loops series, are so positive it is nearly unreal. 5 out of 5, 100% plus, music from the heavens, ambient king ( better than Eno)The hype is unreal. So,where do I start? A 90 second sample on itunes is not the best place. I understand the technical end of the Loops series,to me nothing new there  Disintegrating tape,I still have used tape from my old Revox,I should check the tape out. Thanks.

As a consumer of music, not a creator,Bandcamp is my favorite download site at the moment. I Tunes is the largest but the 256 limit disturbs me. Boomkat have the largest selection of my type of music but are expensive as it charges in pounds though site is very well done.Bandcamp let you listen to all the tracks,a huge bonus for me as a 30 second clip does not work. You can choose Lossless or Flac at no additional charge. The lay out is well done and artistic. I really like their new beta test site.I have very little attachment to the physical product anymore. I have surprised myself there coming from the days of LPs,cassettes,CDs but as long as I get it in lossless form and I back up,it is OK.
BTW,3 new Biosphere albums out there. Film soundtracks. Not much new unfortunately.

I got a cd I bought off Ebay shipped from the UK to Canada regular royal post last month in 5 days. I could not believe it,faster than shipping within my own country.Going the other way, never done it but not uncommon to see a few weeks.

Further, there is a great 2 part interview each 10 minutes on You Tube about Peter.
Key in Pete Namlook's slice. Got it through Pitchfork.
We will miss you.
