Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Re: The Modular Synthesizer Thread

I've found the VCS3 is great for processing stuff, I particularly like running external synths through the ring mod -> filter -> spring reverb, using the oscillators as to modulate stuff (and each other), rather than as sound sources, can get pretty wild, but can also be musical too

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Stars of the Lid tour October 2016
« on: April 06, 2016, 04:44:00 PM »

The legendary drone duo announce their largest tour in nearly a decade.

Stars Of The Lid will embark on tour this fall to play some new compositions and they’re bringing a few special additions. The longtime duo of Adam Wiltzie and Brian McBride will be joined by studio collaborator Francesco Donadello as well as Robert Donne of post-rock greats Labradford. They’ll also bring along the Echo Collective string ensemble and a vintage Moog System 55.

Performances from the group have grown so rare that the 10-date tour actually makes it their longest since 2008 when they toured their last album Stars Of The Lid And Their Refinement of the Decline. Last year Kranky reissued the groups records on vinyl and Ben Frost revealed he was working with them on their long awaited new album.

Tour Dates:

10/01 Amsterdam, NL @ Paradiso Nord
10/02 London, UK @ Barbican
10/03 Bristol, UK @ Colston Hall
10/04 Nottingham, UK @ Nottingham Contemporary
10/05 Manchester, UK @ Methodist Central Hall
10/06 Glasgow, UK @ Oran Mor Auditorium
10/07 Newcastle, UK @ Sage Gateshead
10/08 Cork, IE @ Christchurch
10/09 Dublin, IE @ TBC
10/10 Brighton, UK @ St Mary’s Church
10/11 Brussels, BE @ Special location project presented by AB

The electro-music festival is the world's premiere event for experimental electronic music. Known as the "Woodstock of electronic music," it features three full days of concerts, seminars, demonstrations, workshops, jam sessions, collaborations, video art, and a swap-meet. Electro-music 2016 will be held at the Greenkill Retreat Center in Huguenot, New York, September 9 - 11, 2016.  Now in it's twelfth year, we expect this to be the biggest and best electro-music event ever!

The scope of this festival is very broad, covering all aspects of electro-music: experimental electronic music, ambient, space music, circuit bending, computer music, electro-jazz, modular synthesis, musique concrete, improvisation, algorithmic composition, multi-media, visual art and much more. The focus will be on participant involvement, sharing, community development, audience education, and great music.

You can actively participate in electro-music 2016 by performing music or visuals, giving a seminar, workshop, or demonstration, joining one of the many collaborations, or by volunteering to help with various tasks.

If this is your first time, please visit the web site for instructions on how to participate:

http://event.electro-music.com/

The deadline for application is June 30.

This event is a community-sponsored gathering, not a commercial enterprise. As such, everyone who attends will need to purchase tickets, including performing artists and volunteers. We regret that we cannot provide compensation for artists, or pay for travel expenses. We strongly encourage full participation: plan to attend for all three days to support your fellow artists and to contribute to the sense of community. This makes the event more enjoyable for everyone.  Highest priority for performance spots will go to artists who are fully involved. Ticket prices are expected to increase slightly from last year, when they ranged from $40 for a single day to $339 for a three-day pass including meals and lodging.

I saw Stephen Parsick at the B-Wave festival at the weekend, he says he is about to return from some kind of self-inflicted sabbatical... he says he needed to have a break

I just bought a used OP-1  ;D

It's really fun and I'm really enjoying the sounds I can get out of it. On the surface it seems very minimal, but it can actually get quite deep  :)

Thanks for the info Modulator & Scott.  I have seen a few of the cool synths for iPad and without being able to demo them was concerned they were more toys then serious instruments.  Not so!

I think the iPad is a seriously fun toy, but then I think my Matrix 12 is too :)

The minijack has been fine for me, it's pretty good, but there are proper audio interfaces availble though if you need better quality

Voice count depends on the app, and it varies quite a lot

The iPad probably doesn't make much sense for someone who just wants to play a synth via MIDI, but it's great for someone who wants a self-contained sound maker with lots of cool synths many of which have interesting performance interfaces

I would recommend the iPad too, there are some very nice synths (addictive synth, animoog, alchemy, nlog, dxi, magellan, sunrizer, wavegenerator etc) available for it now and also some very interesting experimental/noise/weird stuff (abcdefg, cp1919, impaktor, curtis, photonoise, modaxis, monnix, riscy, toplapapp etc), plus you can get i versions of the MS20, electribe and kaossilator, and that's just a small selection. I've even been sampling my old synths using samplewiz so I can use them anywhere  8)
