Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: The Necks
« on: March 06, 2008, 07:28:49 AM »

I just became one. And it's totally out of character for me, because I listen to drift/drone and Indian classical most of the time. Been buying their stuff left and right..."Hanging Gardens" is truly great

IMHO, power cables do make a huge difference up to a point, then they become just different flavors. In my case, replacing a cheap generic power cable that came with a $3k CD player tightened the bass significantly, created a truly holographic sound effect with three-dimensional depth...etc. Naturally, the rest of the system must be up to it, otherwise, it's a waste of money. BTW, I do have "tin ears", so to speak, and in no way aspire to be an audiophile.

To hear the difference, the recording must be of good quality too. Ironically, I purchased some CD-r's from a certain ambient artist a few years back. They were full of clicks and cuts, lousy recording quality altogether; his response to my complaint was that the problem was with my sound system because it was way too resolving :-\. Go figure...

Now Playing / Re: "Classical" Music or Contemporary Composition Listeners?

Check out Theatrum Chemicum, whose  driving force is Enrico Cosimi, aka Tau Ceti.
Also, can never go wrong with Gustav Mahler and contemporary Scandinavian composers like Norgard

Here's my favorite, by far:

Jack DeJohnette, <Oneness>,  very atmospheric, sparse jazz with great percussion

I'd like to buy it, anyone knows who might be selling it? (sane price, of course)???

What pisses me off is that after I got their <tri repetae>, still looking for the glimpses of genius, I kept buying every other CD not only released by them but also by the Warp label, and consequently had wasted a lot of money that could've been spent on really nice music...Another guy that I feel likewise about is Mick Harris of Scorn...

But seriously, it's a shame what happenned to Autechre. They had such a great promise...but wait, ....there's that Uwe guy, Arovane that is! I feel much better now!

I've been an Alio Die fan for many, many years and happen to own every CD he ever made. They're all spectacular! The Password for Entheogenic Experience and Expanding Horizon are my favorite. His works under the Five Thousand Spirits moniker, except for the very first one, are not exactly my cup of  tea (too many analogue sounds, less organic). His early works are all a true classic. It is thanks to him and M Grassow that I developed a taste for ambient music. Amazingly, every ambient CD I tend to subconsciously measure against their music....

Just got a 3-DVD Emmanuelle Beart collection. French movies at their best! The kind of minimalist, yet immensely rich acting that bloody Hollywood has never had. Lauren Hutton in American Gigolo comes close to Ms. Beart's acting. Definitely, not for everyone, but worth the $50.00 I spent.

Great mix, Dave! (except for one vocal track that I don't dig...but, with very few exceptions, I don't dig vocal music, period)
