A Produce & Loren Nerell
“Intangible”
(www.hypnos.com, 2011)

NOTE: This review was written on Monday, September 5, 2011 – the day that Barry Craig (A Produce) died unexpectedly at the age of 59. This review is dedicated to Barry and to the musical legacy he leaves behind.

Though A Produce and Loren Nerell have been composing ambient music for years, Intangible is their first collaborative effort. A gentle, bubbly sequence lightly introduces the title track, a superb number that pulls us right in with its silky blend of soothing sounds.  It is deceptively simple and eminently listenable. “Planet Atmo” is a more free-floating affair, lighter than air with a gently pulsating undercurrent. Light and dark elements play off each other perfectly. It has distinctly organic and synthetic components to it, a subtle, sublime piece of music. “String Theory” takes things in another direction, with a strong rhythmic, world music feel it, a well-placed change of pace.  “Area 51.1” pulls us back firmly into the ambient realm, though a few soft beats remain. The lead sound here is captivating, perhaps a processed sample from a didgeridoo or a drum of some type. “Lost in Transformation” is the darkest, most adventurous piece, churning and gurgling from otherworldly primordial origins. Soft rhythm returns on “Meadow Dust”, courtesy of a djembe or bongo drum, imbued with warm pads and gentle drones. “Pot Covers at Dawn” brings the album to a dreamy, atmospheric close. Each track excels at defining a theme then subtly exploring its nuances without pomp or circumstance. Intangible is a highly cohesive and satisfying listen; a worthy addition to Loren Nerell’s canon, and a fitting finale to the work of A Produce.

I am so shocked and saddened to hear this terrible news.  It was only a few days ago Mike that you, Barry and I were cracking jokes on FB.  And the new Intangible album with Loren Nerell is fantastic.  What a terrible loss.  My condolences to his family.

Thanks everybody for all the kind words.

You're welcome!  :-)

Hi all,

An announcement from Electroambient Space,

First, there is a new August issue posted, with an interview with Graham Getty and a few new reviews.

Second, after doing reviews more or less continuously for the past 15 years, I am taking a much-needed break.  Please refrain from sending new promos for consideration for review.

I am in the process of reorganizing the reviews and interviews pages, and will also attempt to catch up on the backlog of previously submitted music for review. If and when I resume reviewing new music, I will let everyone know.  Thanks!

Hi everybody.  The June 2010 issue of EAS is now uploaded.  This month's interview is with Darrell Burgan, who operates the StillStream radio show, the Earth Mantra netlabel, and records music as Palancar and with others.  I hope you like it.  Thanks!

The backlog of albums to review is seemingly neverending, and I tend to review the ones I like better first.  The ones I dislike often simply don't make the cut.  But even if I don't like an album, I figure the artist put their heart and soul into it, so you will rarely if ever find me totally discounting an album or saying it sucks or something like that.  I try to find something about it to appreciate, and do usually say if it is something that isn't my cup of tea.  But hey, the reason I review this stuff is I like most of it.

Hi everyone.  The May issue of EAS is now uploaded.  This month's interview is with Computerchemist.  12 new reviews, including the latest Steve Roach collaboration with Byron Metcalf, the new Robert Rich, Radio Massacre International, and more.  I hope you enjoy it.

Articology is a favorite of mine as well, and another friend I recommended the site to.  Excellent floating music.

Listening to the sample of the first track now, sounds great Anthony!

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Earth Mantra netlabel

This may be old news to some, but I wanted to pass along a great find in the ambient netlabel Earth Mantra (www.earthmantra.com).   Fans of Hypnos music should find a lot to their liking here, and it is all completely free!  I don't know how/why they do it, but it's pretty amazing.  They don't even accept donations, except to donate to a list of worthy charities they recommend if you want to.  They have 119 releases, mostly from unknown artists, but there are also releases by the likes of Tony Gerber and Kit Watkins.  Definitely worth checking out. But, of course, keep buying Hypnos CDs, too!

Hi guys.  This month's issue is posted.  New reviews include albums by Steve Roach, David Wright, Ian Boddy, and several from a free ambient netlabel called Earth Mantra.  Check it out, thanks.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

Hi everyone.  The January 2010 issue of EAS is now uploaded.  Check out over 25 CD reviews, including Hypnos artist Deepspace.  Also included is the Best of 2009 Year In Review feature, and an interview with Belgian EM artist Joost Egelie.  Enjoy.

Thanks for the comments.  I noticed as I was publishing that I did tend to go a little ga-ga this month - but I did really like them all!  The ones I really dislike tend not to get reviewed at all, since the backlog is so high.  (note to musos:  no, that doesn't necessarily mean I don't like your disc if you sent me something and I haven't reviewed it yet!)

Hi again.  The October issue of EAS is now uploaded for your reading enjoyment.  Several new CD reviews, and an interview with Forrest Fang.  I hope you like it.

I was sort of surprised to find I'd been pronouncing it correctly all along!   :)

My brother Mark sent me this link, should be of interest to fans of Hypnos-like music.  I'd not heard of this UK-based music store, or this particular artist, Lawrence English.  Very relaxing but not new agey (which is good IMO).   :)
