Everything and Nothing / Re: recommended AV receivers ??
« on: July 28, 2012, 10:04:27 AM »
I recently did quite a bit of research.

Here's a few pearls:

1.  Spend twice as much on speakers as you do on the AVR
2.  Strongly consider getting an AVR with Audyssey room correction.  This feature automatically corrects for your rooms characteristics which otherwise might significantly alter the sound you were supposed to hear.
3.  Look at the options for control with your smartphone or tablet
4.  Currently Onkyo and Denon seem to meet #2 and #3 above the best, and the price for room correction inclusion has dropped below $1,000 for teh first time
4.  If you need very specified help, consider joining and posting to AVS Forum http://www.avsforum.com/f/

Good luck.

One of my three 2.0 TB drives failed...fortunately it was just after I had backed it up :)

You may want to try replacing your wireless router.  That might help with your NetFlix connection and routers are cheap.

I have a Samsung DVD player with built-in Wi-Fi and it works fine for streaming NetFlix; I've never had a problem except when NetFlix was down itself for the player needed rebooting.

You can also use a powerline converter for your network and eliminate the need to run some ethernet cable if you want to try a wired connection for your DVD player.

And you can split that remaining HDMI port with another piece of gear:

There is certainly more than one way to skin the CAT-5.

Exactly 15,000 albums :)

Hearing no major objections, I have posted it here.

It's 109 mb.

Enjoy in memory of...

yes most definitely...
that would be awesome.....
thanks...

Thanks for your reply.  I'll give it a little bit more time for other replies to filter in.

I just don't want to violate any written or unwritten copyright issues and I expect this forum will have the collective knowledge to guide me here.

It's a great MP3 album that he released freely after the loss of a friend.  It's quite appropriate that I now listen to it and think of Jim.

I ran into Jim's MP3 album "Spectre Looms Suddenly" randomly yesterday.  I found it quite emotive.

Would anyone mind if I posted it again?  I Googled it and Jim's site is no longer up.

In case anyone is interested, this is the player interface visible on any computer in the house:

I can also control the system from any smartphone, iPad, Andriod tablet, or Squeezebox remote.

My next post should take me well over 150,000 files and  perhaps over 15,000 albums.

7 yrs ago, I lost ~15,000 vinyl records in New Orleans to Hurricane Katrina.  Now I have nearly that number of albums on three hard drives.  I'm amazed at how far we have come.

Everything and Nothing / Record Store Day 4/21/12
« on: April 21, 2012, 12:14:54 PM »
I decided to "celebrate" Record Store Day by going to the legendary Waterloo Records in Austin.  I felt energetic and decided to get to the store about a half-hour early.  Much to my surprise and consternation, the line wrapped around the entire city block nearly to the door of the store.   I was just as surprised to walk into the store about 10 minutes after opening to nearly standing room only as people slid up and down each aisle to look at all the vinyl releases that came out today including David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Abba, Captain Beefheart, etc.

http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases

It was madness.  I grabbed about 10 records including a Japanese reissue of Eno's "Another Green World" and attempted to checkout.  The line wrapped around the interior wall of the building to the other corner of the store opposite from the cash register.

After I waited approximately 20 mins and the line had moved about 1 foot, I calculated that I would be in line for about 2-3 hours before I could even see the cash register.

The mission was then aborted.  I unbagged my booty and walked out into the cool, sunny weather.

I then drove over to a smaller record store near my home but I couldn't find a parking spot!

Not a very successful RSD for me, but it DOES indicate the power of vinyl in Austin.

Jim
