Forum Member Projects News and Promotion / Hakobune - Tonight Is Why
« on: August 31, 2013, 11:11:41 AM »
Psychonavigation Records is excited to welcome our first Japanese artist to the label. Following the success of his album on our sister label (Pure Wave Recordings) we present the latest work from the prolific ambient artist ‘Hakobune’ aka Takahiro Yorifuji. Born in a small town in Hyogo, Japan,Yorifuji currently resides in Tokyo.

'Tonight Is Why' is the artists first foray into the world of releasing an album which comprises of one long solo piece of music.

Over the 39 minutes we are swept away to an imaginary world, dark and bleak one minute and other times strange and mysterious. The album was recorded one late spring morning, using guitar and some pedals. To simply classify the music as Ambient drone is to miss the point entirely though, listen closer and you will hear a wonderful subtlety within Takahiro’s music. His productions share many similarities with the work of Brian Eno and fellow Japanese producer Tetsu Inoue.

Roger Doyle is the Godfather of Irish electronic music. In 2007 he was awarded the Magisterium Prize at the Bourges International Electro-acoustic music competition in France - one of the most important prizes in the world for this type of music. ‘Babel’, his magnum opus ,which took ten years to compose, was released on a 5-CD set in 1999, where each track corresponds to a ‘room’ or place within an imagined giant tower city. Roger has teamed up with Ireland’s Psychonavigation Records to release ‘Cool Steel Army’. The longest and most important piece on this CD is called ADOLF GEBLER, ‘Adolf Gebler, clarinettist’ is scored for symphony orchestra, piano, female singer and CD player playing back the acted scenes. The script, specially written by Carlo Gebler and adapted from his memoir 'Father and I', is based on the story of his grandfather Adolf Gebler, first clarinettist with the Radio Eireann Studio Players (a precursor of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra) which he joined in 1936. Adolf came to live in Ireland having fallen in love with an usherette he met after a concert he gave in Dublin in 1910. The first performance took place in February 2008 at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gavin Maloney. Just before the piece began the auditorium lights were lowered and all music stands were lit to increase the atmosphere. What followed was a beautiful insight into an otherworld were music and theatre form a beautiful unity. This recording is a revised and expanded studio version, prepared for CD, with singer Fionnuala Gill (the song was re-imagined and more than doubled in length), and re-created with the Vienna Symphonic Library software programme.

Good evening,

We at Psychonavigation Records here in Dublin Ireland would like to inform you of an album that may appeal to the Hypnos collective ;)

Gel-Sol IZ'

A joint release between Psychonavigation and Canadian label Upstairs Recordings. Seattle based producer Gel-Sol presents his new album entitled 'IZ', and in his own words "Is an all-ambient adventure I wrote for my niece Izabella, who was born early last year". Gel-Sol (aka Andrew Reichel), whose dichotomous sound spans from ambient soundscapes to complex, rhythmic electronica, creating a dynamic psychedelic universe with heavy emphasis on improvisation. His influences range from 70's prog and kraut rock to electronic and psychedelic. The album's music showcases Gel-Sol's trademark melodic edge combined with sweeping Synth pads reminiscent of 90’s ambient albums from the likes of Pete Namlook & Global Communication...

Cyclic Defrost Review:

Seattle-based electronic producer Andrew Reichel (aka Gel-Sol) has cultivated something of a reputation for ‘widescreen’ downtempo / ambient soundscapes, with his 2004 debut album under the production moniker on Em:t ‘1104’ calling to mind The Orb’s surreal sample-laden psychedelic flights of fancy circa ‘Adventures In The Ultraworld.’ A scant twelve months on the heels of last year’s ‘Unifactor’, this third album ‘IZ’, a joint release between the Dublin-based Psychonavigation label and Canadian imprint Upstairs sees Reichel constructing a nine-part ‘all ambient adventure’ for his niece Izabella, who was born last year. From the very outset here, the familiar melodic aesthetic heard on previous Gel-Sol albums is firmly in place in, with the opening title track introducing the lush, almost orchestrally-arranged fusion of rich ambient synth pads and flowing melodic elements, the resulting blend sitting somewhere between Pete Namlook’s similarly cosmic and beatless mid-nineties output and Tangerine Dream-style prog.

Curiously though for an album dedicated to an infant relative, while the overriding mood tends towards uplifting and optimistic territory, there’s still a trace of underlying tension and uncertainty, with the sampled sound of distant police sirens and what sounds like a homeless man creating an effective counterpoint to the bleak-sounding string swells that roll throughout ‘Mourningwok.’ It’s these vaguely unsettling undercurrents that also add an unexpectedly dark and poignant edge, such as the dark subterranean bass tones and disembodied hypnotherapy samples that float through the ominous ‘Raneboze’, and maintain the levels of intrigue whilst preventing proceedings from drifting completely away into a blissful ambient / chillout waft.

We have a couple of cheap copies for sale up on Ebay at the moment
