I think for one, if we got rid of the loudness wars and use high res music files I think we could actually hear the dynamics of a song a musician intended for their listeners....
I personally use 96Khz/24 bit, esp. since I know I am going to have to dither down to CD quality, but I capture the nuisance of the guitar player and capture his expression on the guitar. For that matter, drums, sythtns, etc.
that way, the captured moment, expressions and emotions are not loss when converted down.

Really quick question...did you do the video yourself or did someone else make the video for you???
I love it and was just wondering what tools were used in making it...

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: Alio Die on BC
« on: February 17, 2015, 12:15:12 PM »
I don't know if this is the 'new reality' or not, but BC is unique (as far as I'm aware) in that it lets people stream releases in effect. I've heard that may change, even iTunes limits listening to a preview. Naturally this differs from a service like Spotify, but it seems to me to be the same thing in effect, it's just that listening is free on BC.

I understand the artist deciding to limit their tracks and I also understand that the listener wants to hear the full release (which is what I currently do with my material)

Bandcamp does limit the number of times you can stream something.  I was streaming a Mick Chillage album last week; this week I tried to listen again, but I got a pop-up telling me to open my wallet.  I clicked "no thanks"; now when I hit play, the same pop-up window appears, and I can't stream it anymore.

I found a way around that in a web browser. I don't know if I should openly just come out with how to get around that, but if the majority here thinks I should, then I will post the solution.....:)

<hint> your cookie history ;)

I'm sorry....It must be a U.S. region thing only since that's the official youtube site for Jon Jenkins, but here's CdBaby's website for him. Just go to Track 8 and you will hear the wobbly effect...

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Synth Wobbly effect
« on: December 16, 2014, 08:55:31 PM »
Hi there.
I was wondering if someone could guide me on how to create this synth wobbly effect, what filters, etc.? I know it can be applied not just to synth but to other samples, etc..

It's Jon Jenkins, A Word with the Vine here:

The effect starts around :57 seconds into the video.

Any help to guide me on creating this effect would be most appreciated it. Thanks..

Everything and Nothing / Re: Remasters: To tweak or not to tweak?
« on: September 22, 2014, 08:23:14 PM »
To me when I was mastering my own music is not to slam it hot and add a compressor, etc. just to make it hot....
As one reads a lot of the old master engineers, they will tell you mastering is subtle, just to bring out the best of the song and album as a whole. To bring up the highs to emphasis something or bring up the lows to emphasis without making the song muddy.....
Mastering can be well done without having to up the levels.....each song should be enjoyed at it's normal, intended level the musician wanted.....

It's definitely not about the gear, it's about what's inside that drives one's passion and creativity to make music.
My gear is average, but my passion to make music is about emotions, images and conveying that as music......
That's what should drive one to make music and their passion may it be music or being a chef, etc....doesn't matter....find your inner passion and creativity and go forth and make it happen...

I appreciate your efforts, but the album I've listened from you - Alternate Realms 2, have good ideas, but the sound quality is not very good, I'm sorry. But this is what I'm discussing here, good ideas that are lost in the middle of weak setups. The weak link should always be you and not the gear, so if anything have to improve is the artist not the gear.

This also goes back to the latest trend we are experiencing in the music field is that everyone wants their music portable and streamed which is heavily compressed and low bitrate, etc....
Many articles on this current trend and why people like us can't really stand it, because we musicians want the highest fidelity and quality, but to reach the masses as of late, we have to cater to what's popular to get our music heard....
if you heard my album on an actual CD, you will hear the entire spectrum of my sounds, etc.:)
