Everything and Nothing / Re: What are your plans and goals in 2008?
« on: January 08, 2008, 05:45:20 PM »
hahaha..I have to ask, Really, can any of us be 'Mentally Fit':) muhahahahah

Yes - I love this topic - I'm the culprit for the 2006 and 2007 versions of this thread... :)  really glad you fired up a new one!

Once and for all - I'm buying a new soundcard and recording again.    Recording again has been my plan for about 4 years now (if you could still see the old threads, you'd laugh...)...   This is the year!

Heidi and I have already talked about getting a new soundcard since my Aardvark is tied to Win98 - and I don't feel like trying to get it to work in XP.   I might still use the old computer for a drum machine - we'll see.   I have a goal of writing a few songs this year and maybe, just maybe, getting a release ready to send out as a demo.

We've already moved a large chair out of my studio and half of my bass amp is in next to my synths for the first time in 5 years (the other half of the amp is at my mother-in-laws - we had a great jam session on New Years Eve... :)  it's coming home soon...).   I'm toying with getting a new effects box as a present to myself, and Heidi thinks I should buy a decent guitar.   I'm definitely getting the sound card - we'll see about the rest.

Beyond music my goal is to continue getting healthier and losing weight.   It was quite the weird year for my health last year.   I think I'm on the right track now with regular exercise, eating right, vitamins, and regular doctor visits.

My wife and I have these sort of running resolutions to be...

* physically fit
* financially fit
* mentally fit

I've been working on those three for about 5 months now and things are looking a little better in the world.

Heidi and I plan to hike more - that's the biggie for us.  I'm not an outdoor person, never have been.  We went hiking once last fall and I loved it.   We also bought bikes and I can't wait for the weather to clear up a bit to get out and ride!   I'm riding indoors this winter to hopefully have the muscles built up to actually be able to go a decent distance next year.

got 'GAS' huh there Mike(Gear Acquistion syndrome) where one likes to go out and just buy and buy a lot of gear for one's studio:) heheheh

I'm also going to add a few miscellaneous pieces of studio gear, little FX boxes and stuff.  Trying to clean up some clutter.

Everything and Nothing / Re: New flatscreen TV recommendations?
« on: January 08, 2008, 05:38:41 PM »
actually Mike, OLED is an enhancement to LCD....typical LCD as of today so far use just basic flourscent lighting for the backlight and the screen pixels, but by switching over to OLED as a backlight, it will improve the contrast, colors, etc of an LCD screen...in fact, Samsung already has a model out that uses OLED techology...in fact, they are also incorparating it into DLP's too...:
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=dlptv&model_cd=HLT6189SX/XAA

Darren, you're right that plasma screens use more electricity than comparably-sized LCD screens.  You're also right that Sony is doing LCD sets and not Plasma sets, at least next year.  But as for Plasma "not going to last much longer," do you realize you're talking about a technology that is seeing massive growth, not a downturn?

Also, OLED coming into play (which will not happen, for large-size TV screens, during 2008 or maybe even 2009) is not something that will lead to the increased acceptance of LCD over Plasma.  OLED will be a competing technology to both LCD and Plasma (you seem to imply that it's some sort of enhancement to LCD technology), so if you're proposing that OLED is a technology to wait for (just try to find an OLED television in stores, any size screen, at any price) then a person should buy neither Plasma nor LCD.

Well for one that's about to take the plunge myself next month, I will say this and have noticed the trend in the last few years.....just like the blu-ray vs. HD dvd format wars...from what I can gather is that plasma is going way of the do do bird......it's not going to last much longer due to the higher wattage needed plus the expense of it...
so that's why more and more manufactures are turning to LCD even Sony just recently announced they are getting out of the rear projection part of the tv's and going strictly LCD....
in fact, with OLED coming down the pipes..I see LCD becoming even better...

nah...they just don't realize that they have to create a new 'cookie' in IE or what ever browser due to the new IP address, etc....I had to do the same is log back in with my username...
just sometimes, people just don't look up and just start reading with out realizing they are not logged in...

I'm concerned that maybe a lot of people are having trouble logging-in for some reason.  I see lots of "guests" viewing the Forum at any given time, but not many logged-in members.

Maybe people are just browsing and waiting to see more traffic before they bother logging in.

I won't be able to work on this much until later today, but if people are trying to log in and unable to do so, please email me at mg (at) hypnos.com

hmmm...maybe we could "collarabate" on something together...:)

Hey there Mike,

I didn't realize what a great looking guy you were:)....hmmm..when do we get to see shots of Lena now doing her thing???? hmmmm:)...

I will probably post mine soon but considering my studio is very very simple and laid out simple enough....I am one of those that do everything, most everything through the computer, etc....only thing I use is my keyboard....

Lena can't do her thing with anyone watching.  Oh, you mean her music thing!  Well, I think Lena's shy enough about recording music without having me photograph her while she's playing.  Maybe some day.

As for me, I'd have to be a "great looking guy" to win the heart of a red hot sexpot like Lena, wouldn't I?   ;)

One little annoying thing I have noticed is that after posting a reply in this new forum is that it takes you back to post number 1 instead of taking you to the last post and if the thread happens to be 4 or more pages, this can be annoying...
Any way to fix this???

"What about the backups?" is a much longer and more tiring story than I'm prepared to tell right now.  Let's just say that most of the Hypnos site, the kind that resides in discrete files (html, php, txt, jpg and so on) that I can upload and download, is well and frequently backed-up.  The data underlying the Hypnos Forum is a batch of complex mySQL data kept in a huge file on the web site host's server, and that part is not readily backed-up by the user (or at least I didn't know how to do it until now). Worse, in the course of trying to comply with the web host's complete lockdown of that data, I deleted a bunch of old, redundant data (like the old, old Hypnos Forum on UBB software), as well as one bit of not-old, not-redundant data that was crucial to the running of the Forum.

The story of why I can't get the web hosts to just restore the database to its prior state, is the long, tiring and depressing part.  Let's just say I have come to truly hate the web hosting company that hosts hypnos.com, and that they will not be hosting the site much longer, but in the mean time, the Hypnos Forum as we know it will just have to start fresh.  Maybe if I hadn't been banging my head up against the brick wall that is ValueWeb tech support for the past 2 days, I would have been able to solve this problem more elegantly.

Yeah, I sent you an email complaining about the blue. Too washy/faded, and messes with the white text.
And the blue on posts blends the different posts too much. I'd look for a theme with a bit more differentiation.

And as I also said in the email, I don't mind being a moderator ... I'm checking the forum a lot and wield a mean lightsabre. Everything I know I learned form Obi-John  ;D
