Other Ambient (and related) Music / The Ancients awesome review:)
« on: December 10, 2010, 05:35:14 PM »
Thanks John for doing an awesome review of my album, The Ancients and keep up the awesme work..:

On his newest release, The Ancients, Darren Rogers weaves a musical tale of the “lost knowledge of Atlantis.” The story spills forth in four fairly long tracks, the shortest just shy of 10 minutes, for a little under an hour’s worth of calm, sighing, melodic music. Truth is, The Ancients doesn’t really need the ostensible theme to work. My first listens were made free of that context and I liked what I heard; no deeper sense or insight was gained through knowing Rogers’ narrative intent. The opener, “From the Stars,” is the longest track, a lush and graceful flow of soft chords with an undertone of approaching sadness. A very nice ambient work that stands on its own. Rogers appropriately layers some drama beneath his drifts on “Utopia Lost” and carries it easily into “Celestial Voices from the Heavens,” where the composer makes strong use of a vocal sample, coming like the voice of a lone Atlantean singing in prayer. To me, this track starts a bit uncertainly but levels off a few minutes in. Towards the end Rogers gives it a distinct spacemusic feel. I can’t decide if the closing/title track starts out with the sound of panicked voices–which would make sense if Rogers is ending his story with the ruin of Atlantis. It’s a little distracting but, like the track before, this one eventually smooths out on a bell-tone melody that gives way to starry, pensive pads.

All in all, The Ancients is a solid piece of work that hovers on the border between drifty ambient and deeper spacemusic. Well worth a listen.

LOL...don't you know that if they know they can not play hardly at all, the thing to do is to crank the volume to 11 to drown their lousy playing out so no one will notice their lousy playing:)

Everything and Nothing / Re: Which is it??

These are some good comments guys...keep them coming...
Yeah, I totally agree in that we are doing it for the art..for the love of it...

Mike: my gear switching change is not for the money, etc, but something I have loved since I was little doing is creating fictional worlds and try to let other people enjoy them as much as I have....
like what was said before...we all use are different creative methods, being either music, photography, writing, etc, but we all love our craft...

Everything and Nothing / Which is it??
« on: November 25, 2010, 09:55:19 AM »
I have kind of switched gears from music to creative writing and was reading yesterday about one's craft in that do you do it for the fame and money or do you do it for the love of it???
If you do love your craft and look around at the other people that are doing it just for the fame and money, do you have despise for them??

Esp since our art is ever changing from what we use to know to new things, so would one continue writing for your craft even though you know maybe the art you love is dying???

I would love to hear from listeners too about what they think...

LOl..you sure you want to go see Battle: Los Angelas???
It could turn out to be another Skyline movie hahahahah
yes I do admit it looks interesting...

I wanted to thank those who mentioned missing me. It's nice to be missed, honestly.

I canceled my Hypnos account a while back and only sparsely lurked here for a long time because, frankly, I didn't think I had much to offer any more. I had more or less suspended reviewing ambient music because the demands on my time reviewing "new age" and world fusion music for New Age Retailer and Zone Music Reporter, combined with my "real life," made me feel like an impostor of sorts. Also, I have been sucked into Facebook and spend (too much) time there. But, as some of you who follow me there know, I am contemplating bringing Wind and Wire back from the dead...in its original format, i.e. covering all kinds of music. I don't have anything definite to state except that I have many MANY older (2007, 2008, 2009) ambient CDs to review still and I still get the occasional ambient CD too (I have reviewed recent releases by Roach and some others for New Age Retailer). I have struggled with finding time for life AND reviewing over the last two years but whenever I do play an ambient CD, I realize I still love the genre. However, I admit to being hopelessly out of the loop (although Marlene was nice enough to have Richard Bone send me his latest).

Anyway, as to the vagaries of this board, hey, at least it's not as bad as ambient@hyperreal, which has REALLY dried up! I do think that with Jim's passing, some of the spirit of this board evaporated. Jim could always be counted on to comment and stir things up. I don't want to pass judgement on or make any statements about the amount of self-promotion on this board...that's better left to others. I do feel that this is more of an artists' hangout than it ever has been, but there's nothing wrong with that. I also think that, as time went on, and as some (not all) arguments descended into some less than savory conduct, civility took hold a little too strictly. Constriction, strictly IMO, tends to stunt growth. Better divisiveness that leads to critical thinking than the group-think that stifles dissent..or something like that!  ;) Or maybe I am just channeling "V." (for Vendetta).

Anyway, as I plod my way through the second half of my "50s" (being 56 now), I have mellowed to the point that long-timers probably wouldn't know it was me, except for my trademark verbosity and redundancy!  :D

If I feel I can contribute to something being discussed, I will do my best. As for the potential for another W and W resurrection, trust me...you will all be among the first to know. Oh, and has anyone seen part 1 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yet? Kathryn and I are seeing it Thanksgiving Day. Opinions? Also, if you are a SF fan and haven't watched the trailer for "Battle: Los Angeles," yet, do so NOW (at http://apple.com.trailers) because this looks awesome!!!...as one early quote stated "It's like Black Hawk Down meets Independence Day."

Cheerio, chaps (and you too, Lena!).

Nah..I like coming here.....I like to see who's releaseing new stuff, new upcoming ambient artists....what Lena is doing:)....
yeah I do admit at times the spammers(people who post constantly about new stuff coming out is a little overblown) but other than that....I am the guy who just sits back in the room and watches everyone else......
I mean...for example, I am a lurker right now due to I switched creative gears and decided to start working on my novel again so I decided to put music on the back burner esp since it seems people are not interested in my music it seems:(....BUY my music, The Ancients at www.imagineerrecords.com

anyways...
enjoying this place...

yeah..we can do the women of ambient photos:)...Just kidding...

Nudity.  Excessive, gratuitous, unnecessary nudity.

Everything and Nothing / Re: Married to Ambient

yeah..that definitely sounds like an episode of ambient cribs:).....

"Welcome to our wonderful home!"
MtA: "Umm - wow - it's smaller than I expected"
"It's 880 square feet - plus - we have a partial basement which does occasionally get water."
MtA: "oh ok, well show us around"
"Here's the kitchen... and the living room... that's Peanut our dachshund... she'll nudge your leg a lot with her nose, that's how she 'sees' you since she's blind as a bat..."
MtA: "wow this is a long and narrow living room... "
"Through here is our bedroom, and over there... that's where the magic happens!   The studio / spare bedroom"
MtA: "That's it?"
"Yeah - well unless you want to see the basement... but it's not that exciting".

Ok - I'll stop - this actually seems more like Ambient Cribs than Married to Ambient.  ;-)

Everything and Nothing / Married to Ambient
« on: November 07, 2010, 09:15:11 PM »
Just got finished watching yet another reality tv series called Married to Rock about the wives of rock stars(yes I know, why am I watching yet another mind numbing reality tv show. I don't know...just makes me go off and not have to think for a while hahahah. anyways), etc and just got me to thinking of that they should do one called, Married to Ambient. Would be very interesting to see what happens in the day to day life of being married to an ambient star:)....
