Totally agree with APK and Mike here...well, not a surprise since i was the complainer mentioned in the starting post 

Tomas, that was you......In my mind the mysterious forum member was a non musician Fan, makes sense though as we are discovering that non musician fans seem to have nothing to say either way.

I may well be interested in knowing how some sounds are produced/created on a CD, but the artist can put this on a web site easily enough and not load the CD with technical stuff.

I think this is a good point, websites & blogs can be the digital equivalent of old school vinyl sleeves and all.......cd info kept to necessary details and then expanded if desired in the www.

Seems to me when I was a kid, fans  knew alot about the the music they loved  (this my be more applicable to rock music).  Personal details of band members etc.  I first discovered the the sound of a Minimoog and Oberheim synths form early Rush albums long before I was personally interested in synthesizers.  My fellow Rush Fans knew exactly what a Rickenbacker bass was and its distinctive sound.  We were not musicians, just fans or were we just fanatics.  Maybe.  Neil Peart was a huge inspiration and was why I started playing the drums.  Are ambient fans so different or are there just so few of us?

Yes like you Paul, all of those sorts of production side notes are very interesting to me.  When I see that an entire performance was recorded direct to 2 track 1/4" tape, this will make me sit up and want to listen even more! 

You make an interesting point about the dorm room scenario......my girlfriends 20 year old son cuts and pastes pre arranged samples and beats into garageband and snubs his nose at my decently appointed studio.  Good or unique instruments do not make great music...our ears have to be the judge of that but if I read that an artist made a recording with a modular synthesizer brand X, right out of the gate I already have a seen that this music was crafted, patched, call it what you will...a lot of time and effort has gone into the making of the music.  For me its sort of a flag that catches my attention before I actually hear the music.

This was a question posted by a forum member somewhere here regarding the long list of modular synthesizers used by Parallel Worlds....it was asked with a tone of frustrated annoyance because it seemed unnecessary to this person.  It struck me as an interesting question.  There are many reasons I believe and I have a few ideas of my own but Im curious if ambient/electronic music fans here care what was used to create the sounds we so love to hear.  Does it matter to the listener?  To musicians its a forgone conclusion...we will always want to know what was involved in the production.

Thanks Tomas for your MBP insight....seems strange that the iMacs are supposed to be very quite, yet the MBP's not so.  I say that because of the "slim" technology involved. Actually its hard to imagine a fan in a laptop come to think of it. 

Funny, not so long ago one of the main concerns of studio recordings was tape hiss from the multi tracks. looking back it seems it was a worthwhile trade for the inherent & much desired tape saturation today....anyway back to not so worthwhile fan noise.

Happy to say Im deep into cd graphics at the moment..... nevertheless, the beast is still misbehaving in the closet!

Yes Loren, this has been on my mind.....I recall you tell me that logic 9 works on your G5,  yesterday I checked the specs on Logic 8 which is what Im on and the intel core duo or intel xeon processor are "highly recommended" according to apple.  Logic 8 is solid, running on OSX Leopard 10.5.8....as to the other big cats that have come on the scene recently, it is a concern and I really dread all the software upgrades, reconfigurations and ilok issues that come along with a new machine, not to say the expense as well.  Im going to see how all this settles and struggle on with the beast in the closet in the interim.

what I love is to be sitting in crystal clear water on my surfboard looking out to the horizon to see the incoming swell break on an outer reef telling me to prepare myself and watching make the turn to paddle for the wave as it arrives to then hold me momentarily before coming to my feet and making the drop into the liquid glide as the reef below me flashes the wave disappears there is no shape or form but for the grace and slide I feel as the dance across the rising wall roars behind me then the sun illuminates the turquoise path that propels the sequence of movements to fast for memory until the energy is absorbed and the deep smile comes as I thank the universe for the ride of a life time......then what I love more as I paddle back out is to watch my girlfriend go through the motions and take the drop on another wave with a huge bottom turn she recoils into the most gentle display of fluid hydrodynamics in each arc and spray a courtship of elements she passes close to me her face of concentrated joy the body in unison a magnetic glow of ebb and flow.

We have been back a few weeks from a surf trip to Bocas del Toro, Panama.....and of course the moral of the story, never ask a surfer to describe what the ride was like, could sound similar to the wonderful drivel above.
