Pete those fans have some pedigree......design by the  "Austrian Institute of Heat Transmission & Fan Technology ;)  Seriously though appears to be a lot of research done on the design, they must be quiet.

It seems to me that PC's are way ahead in the world of keeping a computer cool and quiet.....from silent fans to liquid cooling systems.

Thanks for posting with pictures Loren.....I had read some good things about the Noren Acoustilock gCab, nice to actual hear from a forum member that uses it.  At $1250 it is not cheap but cheaper than buying a new Mac Pro.  IF my closet experiment does not work It will be something to invest in down the road

Yes a computer upgrade is the best option......the big screen iMac looks good, other than my powercore xpress card with I only use for the VSS3 reverb I could go totally usb/firewire.  Anyway my budget for the up coming months has be slated for cd production so no big or small expensive toys right now.

Yes Mike the idea of doing sensitive recordings in another room makes sense, most likely cheaper to move preamps and cables to accommodate the situation than than isolate the studio.

I gave my G4 to my girlfriend and each morning, several rooms away, when it auto starts it sounds like a hair drier.

I have a feeling my solution may just be an inadequate band aid to the problem but hopefully it will enable me to work without that sonic interference right in my face.

Cost wise the highest ticket item is a Gefen Dvi to Dvi booster to extend the display ...$169  Fortunately firewire repeaters and usb hubs drop way down in price.

Im in the process of moving my computer, a G5 Quad Core Mac out of my studio, well not entirely out but into a closet in the studio, your standard accordion slatted closet doors.  Right now the computer is close to my right moniter and when pushed with a lot of plugin activity the fans start to gear up and I just cant deal with what the fan noise is doing to the mid high to high frequencies when trying to mix.

What are you doing to deal with this?  Ive look at the expensive Isobox option.  Mixed reviews from what Ive read.  Seems to be an overheating issue with those boxes.  Putting the computer in an other room is not an a posibility.  Also not ready to upgrade my computer....Ive heard the newest Macs are almost silent.

Your thoughts are most most welcome.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Best Audio Cables
« on: July 16, 2011, 06:31:26 PM »
Thanks to Chad Kettering for turning me on and others I hope...its in a post here somewhere.. to really good audio cable guys http://www.proaudiola.com

The best Mogami cables & neutrik interconnects....its not cheap, but if your looking to move beyond Hosa et el this is the way to go.  They make you cables to order whatever length and turn around is a matter of a day or two.

Remember, we are only as good as our connection......damn, I should work for at&t.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Re: The Ultimate Ambient Synth
« on: June 13, 2011, 03:45:03 PM »
Julio, my favorite Rutman CD is probably his collaboration with Carsten Tiedemann of Mo Boma under the project name  "Spacebow," called Big Waves.  His Steel Cello Ensemble's Zuuhh!! Muttie Mum!! CD isn't bad, either.  I first heard him on an LP called "Bitter Suites," which I don't think has been reissued on CD.

Hdbrell, forgot all about Harry Bertoia.  He is probably better known for his Bertoia chairs, but I love his music, too.  I have his "Unfolding" and "Sounds" CDs, which are reissues of earlier LPs.  Who needs a great synth if you have a great acoustic sound source?  The Bertoia pieces remind me a bit of albums using the wind harp, but are much more complex and almost orchestral.  I've corresponded with his son Val, who seems like a nice guy.

Forrest

Thanks again Forrest.... I will check out your recommendations.   I did not put the Harry Bertoia's Barn and as you say his better known chairs as the same person. Love it!

Where is this thread going...... we now have ambient chairs :)

Julio, if you like the sound of the Baschet crystal, you should also check out some of Robert Rutman's music (under his own name and under his group name, "Steel Cello Ensemble").  Rutman's steel sound sculptures have also been featured on some of the late Klaus Wiese's releases.

Forrest

Thanks for the suggestion Forest.....did a little reaserch into him but most things I came across were very avant garde group performances that did not show off the sound sculptures that much.  His website did have more but very short sound clips. Still worth pursuing, I will have to dig deeper

I do like the sound of the Baschet Cristal......its a sound I have tried to synthesizer...wavetables come sort of close but its still a far cry.

I'd love to spend a day playing around in Harry Bertoia's barn.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtZ3qmGBWEM

Cant say ive ever seen or heard anything quite like it.....towards then end of the video when a bunch of sculptures are in motion it becomes very interesting as the motion and sound begins to diminish and each piece becomes still, beautiful yet tense in a way.

This is the Baschet Cristal as used by Film Composer Cliff Martinez, its not a synth but certainly up there as a contender

Heres a link to some audio/visuals

For my own work I would say my Martix 12 going through an eventide eclipse is my ultimate ambient combo......also Id have to add the Hartmann Neuron, I used to have the VS and it was definitely unique

Yes Paul....in many ways the thread is pointless, though I still find it interesting to see what others consider it to be such as a Field Recorder, FX rack unit or as Seren's post beautifully illustrates the possibilities.  I would have loved to walk on that hilltop amongst  those tune bamboo poles!

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / The Ultimate Ambient Synth

Is there such a thing?  Can it be just one machine?  Maybe it is not electronics at all. perhaps it is........

This was a thread over at gearslutz http://www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-electronic-music-production/481410-whats-ultimate-ambient-synth.html

I think I have it, dont you,  but then.......a perfect gear topic for the Ultimate Ambient Forum!

Sort of comforting to know that Tribal Ambient....come the end of days,  will be the last form of music on this earth.  How else will we be able to communicate with one another?

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / NIN Gear
« on: June 04, 2011, 06:08:44 PM »
Well this has nothing to do with ambient for sure, although there are places where Reznor has done his ambient part from time to time.  Anyway Im a fan and came across this posting on Gearslutz about synths used in NIN and a good majority of the 7 pages is Charlie Clouser talking about his part in Nine Inch Nails, his perspective and his present state of being.

Well worth a read.

Cheers

P.S. Charlie chimes in at the bottom of the first page.

I would also like to point out the very successful El Hadra Ornaments Bundle forum release which has sold out, and Im happy to say Im one of the hundred.  This was brilliantly done.  Great artists, wonderful music.  Imho this illustrates the promotional reach forums like Hypnos & Relaxed Machinery have.

Anywho, I'm just wanting to suggest my opinion that FaceBook is a promo tool not to be overlooked.

I think this may be true in your case Jesse and Saul.....2 very talented musicians with a catalogue of excellent music, respect from the em community and fans excited about new releases and other sonic adventures.  Without this Im not so sure. My experience has been other wise , but then I am not in the same position as you or Saul so that may have a lot to do with it.

The picture may not show much of the studio yet but it does have a nice vibe to it......perfect for some late night listening.

I would say for myself Im not burnt out but more likely lost as to what and where to be web-wise.

I quickly ruled out Facebook, Myspace, Twitter as colossal waste of time and energy, and a waste of time regarding EM and its various genres..... that being said Im still signed up with all of them. For touring Indie alt rock bands....its a different story.

First and foremost people need to be able to hear your music and then purchase it with the least amount of hoop jumping.....I feel thats pretty mush taken care of with the artist that post hear, though I would mention the pit falls of sites like cd baby as far as audition the music.....30 sec sound clips dont cut it.  As a retail e store I imagine its fine, but not without another site where fans can listen to a few minutes worth of music per track and or an e radio on your website that streams a wonderful flow of your sonic flavours

Blogs.....these do offer the fan a chance to get closer to the everyday of the artist / record label, but also require quite a commitment to stay on top of.  Today we have bloggers for hire.  Yeah right!

So whats left......enter the Hypnos Forum,  sounds like enter the dragon, a lot more gentle, same spirit.  I have been here off and on since 2000 AD, more or less, and this forum has been for me a home to return to, a place where I can discover more ambient/electronic music than anywhere else that I have ever come across.  From the "Now Playing", to "Non Hypnos Artist" and of course the ever expanding Hypnos catalog of music. I have purchased more music via this forum than anywhere else

As for my own music, I have sold more cds though the Hypnos forum than anywhere else, humble though those sales maybe.......So kudos to Mike Griffin for being a guiding light when all else seems somewhat dark.

Cheers!

Came across these very odd synths.....these are not photoshop creations, they are available through Big City Music in LA

Heres a little video of the Swarmatron used in Trent Reznor's newest sonic adventure...How to Destroy Angels

And a link to a short film on the creators of these machine......very interesting & strangely funny

Enjoy!

Its a hard thing to comprehend  that a moment in the future will come when everything that I have come to know as my life will cease.  I can see through the fairy tales...still I do like a good story, yet they offer no lasting light in the dark.

"Its too bad she wont live....but then again who does"  The last line of dialogue in the whats the meaning of life Classic Bladerunner, as if you didnt know. Carpe Diem.  If thats all we have then all these moments are so prescious, good & bad equally.

I know my corporeal body will literally push up daisy's, but my consciousness, my energy, what about that?  Perhaps mother earth will absorb it and become part of Gaia.  That would be a useful ending :)
