Other Ambient (and related) Music / I love this album
« on: February 27, 2015, 02:43:49 PM »
One of my favorite albums so far this year is The Race For Space by Public Service Broadcasting.  And the best cut on it is Go!  Take a listen...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHIo6qwJarI

PSB is a duo that combines electronic-ish music with spoken-word passages from old public-service messages, filmstrips, newscasts, etc.  On The Race For Space, they also incorporate NASA communications with the astronauts & mission control.  For a geek like me who loves music and anything NASA it's a perfect marriage.  I really enjoyed their first album but this one is on another level.

I can't recommend this one enough.  Here's a few more links...

Listening: Podcasts, Mixes, and Music Sample Clips / Dishwasher drone
« on: February 15, 2015, 02:43:14 PM »

This is as close as I will come to making ambient music(or any music for that matter).

My dishwasher was making weird noises the other day, kind of sounded like some alien playing a didgeridoo was trapped inside.  So I recorded it and then processed it using Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch.  And whaddya know it actually sounds pretty good.

The only other ambient track I ever made was about 30 years ago so I guess that means my next track will be released when I'm in my 80s.

Everything and Nothing / Best of 2014 - non-ambient
« on: December 21, 2014, 09:57:17 AM »

2014 was another year where I continued to listen to more "normal" music than ambient or electronic music.  I'll just repost here much of what I said on my low light mixes blog.

Part of the shift in my tastes can be directly attributed to Spotify.  I listen to Spotify at work a lot and I have used it more and more to discover new music.  I keep a playlist called "2014 albums worth listening to" that now has 4113 tracks in it.  Not all the albums in there are great or even good, necessarily.  The playlist is just a collection of things in my musical wheelhouse that are worth exploring.  I'm constantly on the prowl for new things to add to it.

On Tuesdays, when new music is released, I go here... http://www.allmusic.com/newreleases  to find out what's new and if it looks interesting I sample it on Spotify & maybe add it to a playlist.  Finding new music has become close to an obsession over the past couple of years and with so much stuff out there coupled with ease of access, it's a great time for music lovers.

Most of the albums on this list you can probably find on lots of other indie lists like NPR, Consequence of Sound, Pitchfork, etc.  A couple records not on the national lists are from Wisconsin bands, Phox & Field Report.  Both record for the fine label, Partisan Records, as does Sylvan Esso which came in at #9 on my list.  Another album with a Wisconsin tie is Paradise Outlaw by Pieta Brown.  A beautiful, ethereal album recorded at Justin Vernon's studio in Wisconsin.

Another odd ball selection is the awesome album by Dylan Howe - Subterranean - New Designs on Bowie's Berlin.  It is a collection of jazz versions of Bowie instrumentals from his Berlin period.  I love this record!  Find it & buy it here... http://dylanhowe.bandcamp.com/album/subterranean-new-designs-on-bowies-berlin

I included Loscil - Sea Island on this list, even though it's electronic not indie, because it's very, very good and deserved to be on both lists.

The only other album that doesn't fit under the indie umbrella is Piers Faccini & Vincent Segal - Songs of Time Lost.  It's a subtle record of soft vocals, guitar and cello.  If you like Nick Drake you will love this record.

The rest of the list is all variations of indie music, some loud, some soft, some electric, some acoustic, some straight forward and some a bit more odd - all of it good stuff worth the effort of seeking out.

What were your most played albums this year?

BEST OF 2014:

  1. The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream
  2. Damien Jurado - Brothers & Sisters of the Eternal Son
  3. Field Report - Marigolden
  4. The Rural Alberta Advantage - Mended with Gold

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Interactive ambient

Here's a link to an online interactive installation.  The music comes from Marconi Union and the site allows you to create your own unique version of their song "Weightless" with a few clicks.

http://www.immaterial.org/

This is similar to other endless ambient generators I've tried but I like this one because I love Marconi Union's music.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Ambient cover tunes
« on: June 18, 2013, 10:32:24 AM »
I'm thinking of doing a mix of ambient covers, but I'm not sure how much is out there.

Right off the top of my head there is Bang On A Can's version of Music for Airports and Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto did a couple of versions of By This River which were very good.

I guess suggestions could include ambient covers of other ambient tunes and ambient cover versions of tunes that weren't originally ambient(wow that sounded confusing).

Any ideas?

Today at work I was listening to the latest release from Loscil, Sketches from New Brighton, on Spotify.  And every song is listed as "Explicit"!!   ???   There must be some subliminal f-bombs hiding under the synths.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Ambient music from non-ambient sources
« on: September 02, 2012, 01:01:20 PM »
I think we had a thread on this idea in one of the previous incarnations of the forum.

I'm looking for suggestions of ambient tunes from non-ambient artists.  A perfect example is "Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats" by Genesis, great ambient tune from a band not known for ambient music.

I'd like to eventually do a mix of these kinds of tracks so if you guys have any more ideas or examples please post them here.

I saw this thread at NPR Music & thought we could give it a go here.

Right off the bat I'm going to cheat & say three bands were a big part of my college life...

1. Ultravox
2. Snopek
3. The Police

University of Wisconsin - Madison '78 to '83.

Snopek was a local band that I saw at least a hundred times.  Even though nobody else knows them or cares I had to put them in here.

The Police were ever present during my college years.  They played a small club across the street from my dorm in the spring of '79.  They had to play Roxanne twice because they didn't have enough material for an encore.

But I'd say the first band that comes to mind when I think of college is Ultravox. I remember falling in love with new wave synth & playing the crap out of "Vienna".  We played "Sleepwalk" & "All Stood Still" at every party we had and if you stood in the middle of the living room during those songs, you didn't need to dance because the floor shook & waved & bounced so much.  I still make party mixes but I miss the dancing.

Myke Weiskopf runs an excellent site devoted to  to preserving and disseminating indigenous sound and music as heard via international radio.  I've downloaded & listened to some wonderful recordings over the years.

In honor of World Radio Day, Myke is making a 5 cd set of recordings available for free download!  But it's only for one day.

Here's the link to his post...

A great opportunity to grab some fascinating, sometimes spooky, always cool recordings.
