bvdub - dreams of red chambers - Thanks to Allan(Undershadow) for turning me on to bvdub in his wonderful ambient dub mix.
Segue - A Glass Darkly - new release from the netlabel Resting Bell.  Some very good stuff on that label.
goldmund - the malady of elegance - more excellent piano music from type records.

Everything and Nothing / Re: What does this music do to you?
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:47:02 AM »
deepspace,  I know exactly what you mean.  I have music playing everywhere, almost all the time.  So much so that I'm now exploring ways of having one central music server play throughout my entire house.  Like you said, the music accompanies me through the day.  So a piece will have a different feel to it if I'm listening while going to sleep vs mowing the lawn vs stargazing vs taking the dog for a walk.

I remember listening to Yagya - Rhythm of Snow while walking & loving the way the sound & pacing of my footsteps on gravel worked with the subtle rhythm in the music.  Having music around me enhances what I'm doing.  The ambidubtechno mix the Allan posted in a thread in "Now Playing" will work well for walks but will also be great for floating in the lake with a beer(which I will be doing next month!).

Ambient music can make mundane tasks more bearable and make cool activities like stargazing even more special.  It can make me forget the real world or help me deal with whats going on in it.  It provides a soundtrack for reading the paper, folding laundry, cleaning the house, watching my son's baseball games, sitting on the deck with a frosty beverage, etc.

Woo hoo!!  This looks great!  Downloading now.

Andrew Deutsch - The Sun - I absolutely love the album.  Thanks to Brian Bieniowski for the recommendation.

Nunc Stans - Land - very nice, floaty ambience.  good stuff.

Marconi Union - a lost connection - I really like their other two releases, hopefully this will be right up there.  So far so good.

Looking forward to listening at work, then on the deck this evening.  Thanks.

James Taylor - Fillmore East, New York City [1971] - old JT has always been a guilty pleasure of mine.

Jonathan Hughes - Circumflex [atmoworks 2008]

Music From The 21st Century - This is an old album from 1986 that I had on vinyl back then, but now only have the sleeve.  It's a compilation featuring Steve Roach, Tangerine Dream, Richard Burmer, Neil Norman, Michael Garrison, Alex Cima, Don Preston & Bruce Curtois.  It's never been released on cd as far as I know, but I just found an mp3 version on Amazon.  Only 5 of the original 8 songs are on the download version.  But it's still very cool, brings back a lot of memories.  The music is essentially sequencer driven electronic music.  Here's the link... 21st Century

Everything and Nothing / Re: American Cancer Society - Relay For Life

Thanks for the link, Mike.  I used to donate to a local team but they didn't do it this year, so I might as well support your team.

Here's a musical sidebar to the Relay for Life discussion...
My son & I were hitting some baseballs in a field next to the track that was running Relay for Life.  They were playing music through loud speakers for the runners & walkers.  Unfortunately it was all "inspirational" music.  The most insipid, annoying, soft rock crap you can imagine.  I have even more respect for the teams that had to run under those conditions.  I would have gone around the track once & just kept going straight after the last turn.  Maybe your team can start a nationwide trend towards ambient Relay for Life soundtracks.

Good luck.

There is no clever theme to this new mix.  I noticed a similar feel to much of the new music I was listening to so I decided to cobble it together in a mix.

All of the music in this mix is new, either 2007 or 2008, except for the Andrew Deutsch cut which is from 2005(although it is new to me).

The music in this mix has a sort of subdued, orchestral fell to it. I started thinking about this mix listening to the new Deaf Center release.  Layers of strings create a beautiful, melancholy experience.  That pretty much describes the rest of the music in this mix.

sigur ros - Me su eyrum vi spilum endalaust - Still sorting through this one. I like it, just depends on how much I like it.
Saul Stokes - Outfolding - I had to give this a spin after using a cut from Washed in Mercury in the last mix.  Excellent.
Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill - Fantastic lo-fi, atmospheric folk tunes with a distinct, ghostly quality.  Songs are a bit more up front than previous albums.  Wonderful release.  Possible candidate for end of the year best of list.
mwvm - rotations - Any Stars of the Lid fans will like this record.  Just a bit darker & more dissonant than recent SOTL.  Excellent recording.

Here the latest mix from Low light Mixes...

It's an ambient trip down memory lane.  I have been listening to Steve Roach's Structures from Silence as sleep music lately.  It was great to hear that cd again, especially the title track.  So that made me pull out some more 'golden oldies', which lead to this mix...retroact 1.0.

All the music in this mix is at least 10 years old. Structures from Silence is from 1984! The Aphex Twin cut is from 1994. I cheated with a couple of tracks however, such as the Tollefson & Vidna/Pearce cuts, which are from 1999.

With new music coming out all the time & with my tastes changing over the years it's easy to forget what a great album Saul Stokes' Washed in Mercury is.  I'll have to pull out Zo Pilots & Outfolding too.   I am very happy to have worked in Thom Brennan's The Path Not Taken into the mix, one of my all-time favorite ambient tracks.

As I said over on my official blog post, this mix is not supposed to represent a certain time period or demonstrate evolving styles. It's just a bunch of older cuts that I sort of randomly pulled out & thought would work well together.

Some new...
Stars of the Lid - Carte De Visite [kranky] - very nice, if you liked 'Refinement' you'll like this.
The Green Kingdom - Laminae [the land of 2008] - sort of ambient, sort of glitchy, toss in some field recordings & you've got a very nice release. Definitely on the lighter side of ambient.  You can find it here... Green Kingdom

Some old...well not really old just not new...
Saul Stokes - Vast [foundry 2006] - wow, I hadn't listened to this one in a long time.  Not my favorite Stokes release, but better than I remembered it.  I like it a lot.
Chris Short - Duende [atmoworks 2002] - excellent guitar ambient.  a double cd full of great music.

Recommendations to make your summertime listening more fun...

cut copy - in ghost colours - at times very 8p's synth pop sounding but in a totally good way, very nice pop music that I'll be listening to all summer.
the ting tings - we started nothing - bouncy, shiny pop that has no substance or staying power but is fun for awhile.
Coconut Records - Nighttiming - a collection of different styles that works pretty well.  I absolutely love the song "West Coast", very sunny & poppy, perfect for summertime listening.
duffy - rockferry - Duffy is a white soul singer with '60s styling, like fellow brit, Amy Winehouse, but better, less annoying.  Good production & instrumentation makes this a fun throw-back listen.
vampire weekend - vampire weekend - sort of ska, indie, afropop, tralking heads meets graceland.  tons of memorable hooks & melodies.  my daughter & I will be singing these tunes in the car a lot this summer.
Atlas Sound - Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel - I bought the Amazon mp3 version of this on a recommendation from Brian Bieniowski.  He describes it as "bedroom, ambient pop".  Good description, good record.

Good to see that Emeralds will release an LP version of Allegory of Allergies, a great drone record.  I wish they'd release more cd's or cdr's.

other recent spins...
Holger Czukay - On the Way to the Peak of Normal [1982]
Happy The Man - Happy The Man [1977]
Terry Riley - Persian Surgery Dervishes [1971]
Clara Mondshine - Luna Africana [1981]

I guess I was in the mood for some old music.  Happy the Man & Clara Mondshine both remind of college, at least what I can remember of college.

Bill,

Thanks for 'bullfrog pond'.  Great quality recording!  The sense of space is brilliant!

It has definitely inspired me to go out again this weekend & do some recording.  Now I need a better mic.
