I am starting "Heaven's Reach", the 6th & final book in David Brin's "uplift" series.  I read the first trilogy a long time ago & recently returned to the series to read #4 & 5.  I really enjoyed those & am looking forward to #6.

the tumbled sea - melody summer - very pretty neo-classical stuff. some is good, some is too sweet.
the orb - orbus terrarum - wow! I can't believe I'd never heard this album until recently.  I heard Slug Dub on LastFM & had to get the album.  Loving the spacey beats.
klotzsch & krey - through all these years of trying to belong - very interesting recording from the 12rec netlabel.  Here's a portion of their description..."Home alone, Emil arranged subtle piano miniatures. Listening to these recordings via headphones, bassetthornist Ruediger Krey improvised over Emils' introspect piano dashes sitting somewhere out in the field with wind and birds and rustling leaves around him." What's a bassetthorn?  sounds like an oboe or clarinet.  Free download here...12rec
Arc Of Doves - Impressions - maybe a bit too pretty.

I just went on a binge of buying TV series on DVD and picked up...

IT Crowd season 2
Extras seasons 1 & 2
Curb Your Enthusiasm season 6
Arrested Development season 1
Eastbound & Down season 1

That should keep us busy for awhile.

Gregg Kowalsky - Tape Chants
Segue - Into The Fall
Ten and Tracer - Tsotsitaal
Martin Herterich - Silent Fileds

I just posted a new mix.  But instead of just adding it to the Low Light thread, I created a new one for it because I figured the title might catch everyone's attention.

I listen to music every night when I go to bed.  I try to keep the sleep play list fresh, but there are definite favorites that I return to again & again.  I wanted to do a new sleep mix so I could incorporate a couple favorite Steve Roach cuts, from Dynamic Stillness & Deeper Silence.

So I dumped some tracks to a portable hard drive, brought it to work & starting mixing in between "real work". I had 4 or 5 tracks laid down & I was listening to one of the transitions & literally fell asleep at my desk, hence the title of the mix. A lot of the tracks sound very much like each other which I guess is good in this case because one track stretches into another, in a long, trance inducing, ambient lullaby. At 90 minutes, the mix is longer than most, but I thought the length worked a bit better for sleeping.

Sweet dreams...

Two new mixes are up at Low Light Mixes.

They are both "rain" mixes that make generous use of field recordings mixed in with the music.  Of course some of the tunes have their own rain sounds mixed in.  Every cut in each mix has the word "rain" in the title.

One mix is a vocal mix called "I Love the Rain".

Celer - Cursory Asperses
David Tollefson - Near And Far
Steve Roach - Dream Circle
Interstitial - Temporal Arc

Put me down as very excited.  Mainly because of Abrams.  And now that the preview word of mouth is good, I am definitely psyched for the movie.

I've just posted an all vocal mix over at Low Light Mixes.  A vocal mix is a rarity over at Low Light, but this one, called "Refuge", still has an ambient sort of feel to it as most of the tunes are fairly quiet.

I've got a couple of songs from Martin Grech in the mix.  His release "March of the Lonely" made it on to my best of 2008 list.  I had to restrain myself from putting in too much David Sylvian, but he did end up with two tracks.  I included an old track from Roxy Music which is a vinyl rip that I did years ago, so there are a few pops & scratches that sneak in there.

Here's another thumbs up for Alan's mixes.  Most recently I've been listening to his best of 2008 mixes, an excellent selection of tracks.  I often go back to the "Great Axescapes" series as well.

Today's playlist includes...

ambrose field - being dufay [ecm] - an absolutely amazing album.  John Potter(Hilliard Ensemble) sings fragments of works by composer Guillaume Dufay (1397-1494).  The vocals are accompanied by live- and studio electronics performed by Ambrose Field, recycling and reworking Potter’s vocal input.  The result is spectacular.  Here their website...Being Dufay

Everything and Nothing / Re: List of words it is not OK to ever say
« on: March 13, 2009, 04:43:13 PM »
According to my 16 yr old's not cool for someone my age to say "dude".  She also doesn't like it when girls/women use the word "dude".

The favorite word for my 14 yr old son & his knucklehead friends is..."pants".  They just think it's a funny word.  They've taken to using it as an exclamation..."What the pants?!!".

A favorite word of mine is Fizbo.  It's not really a word, I use it to refer to people & it sort of replaces "dude" as in "Hey Fizbo, when are we going to the movie?" or "Let's meet in Fizbo's office."  I had a boss that used the term to refer to anybody on his staff.  Apparently it is a real estate term that means For Sale By Owner, FSBO.  He just appropriated it to refer to anybody.

A few other irritations that I just thought of...adding "ing" to words that shouldn't have "ing" such as "efforting" or "partnering".  I guess those may fall under the category of "office-speak" which I hate.  Words & phrases like "repurposing" "synergy" "paradigm shifts" "incentivise" "going forward" blah blah blah.
