Loren Nerell / Mark Seelig: Tree of Life
Limited edition of 500
Loren and Mark’s electro-acoustic debut merges the ambient soundworlds of Southeast Asia, North & South America with the spiritual influences of Bali and India. One part droney soundscape, one part tribal deliberation, and one part ethnological exploration,Tree of Life expands into a transformative experience. Loren’s deep understanding of Balinese music, coupled with his expertise in sound engineering, effortlessly complements Mark’s Bansuri flutes and harmonic overtone vocals and chants. Supported by Sarangi maestro Pankaj Mishra from India, and up-and-coming percussionist Max Link from Germany, the release follows up on ideas sparked during Loren and Mark’s first time on stage together at the 2010 SoundQuest Fest in Tucson Arizona.
“The Tree of Life is a nearly universal symbol found in many different spiritual and mythological traditions around the world,” Loren explains. “It symbolizes the interconnection of all life to our planet. From these many different traditions the names for each song were taken, many of which literally mean the Tree of Life.”
Tree of Life is a mesmerizing blend of ancient instruments, haunting voices, and whispers of Balinese and Indian wisdom traditions woven together with ambient field recordings; it takes the listener on a journey of life and its endless interconnections of this planet.

I just found out from Barry (A Produce's) wife, that his long time friend and collaborator Ruben Garcia is gone. The title of this subject is the title of one of Ruben's album that A Produce put out a few years ago, and I have to say its sadly too fitting as from what I understand he died almost a year ago. I haven't seen any info to support this but this information came indirectly from Harold Budd. I didn't know Ruben very well, I only talked with him on the phone a few times. I had the pleasure to master a few of his later albums. My favorite being Through The Looking Glass the very last release on A Produce's Transport label. I'll be listening to some of his work today.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Binaural Recordings?
« on: December 27, 2013, 05:02:39 PM »
I am looking for some feedback on this issue so, this is a question to everyone out there. I just finished mixing my next album with Mark Seelig which is going to be called Tree of Life. A friend came over the other day and we got to talking about surround sound music (my friend's specialty). He told me he started mixing his stuff down to binaural stereo mixes for headphone listening, so people could enjoy his surround sound music on their ipods or mp3 players. We discovered that I actually already have in my music software the ability to make such recordings without having to do a surround sound mix. So my question is would anyone be interested in this? It would be a separate mix that you could download, but would not be available on the CD, and it would require headphone listening since binaural audio doesn't translate as well to speakers. Please let me know if this does or doesn't appeal to you. Thanks in advance.

Everything and Nothing / A Favor from my Hypnos friends.
« on: October 15, 2013, 03:00:35 PM »
I would like to ask a favor of all my friends here on Hypnos. I recently had the great pleasure of composing the music to a video on the art of Trang Le. Her painting 111,978 is an incredible and important work on the Iraq war. The rest of her body of work is just as amazing. Right now she has an article up on kcet.org, the website for a local TV station here in LA. The article on her is in competition with another article on local DJ culture which if you ask me is not really a fair fight. Basically one solitary artist (sound familar? Just like most of us here) against a group of DJs and the young hip crowd who are very savvy with social media, basically a whole community. If she wins the competition the prize will be KCET TV will make a documentary on her and her art. So I am asking all of my friends to vote for her. You can vote once per day per location. So your home computer, your work computer, your local coffee shop, even the browser on your smart phone, they will all count as separate votes. Please as a favor to me and for her seriously consider voting. The vote is very close right now, even voting once might put her over the top, here's the link where to vote, you can also read the article on her from here:

http://www.kcet.org/arts/artbound/vote/vote-metralleta-de-oro-vs-paintings-of-trang-t-le.html

Also, here's the video I scored about her artwork:

!

Thank you for your consideration.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / BIAS Peak
« on: August 11, 2012, 09:50:21 AM »
Just thought I would give Peak owners out their a heads up. You might want to deactivate and reactivate your install of Peak. For about a week the activation server was down, well now its back up and I just moved my activation over to another computer. When I was done I now have every plugin the BIAS made, all active as well. I never owned any of these plugins before so I am guessing this is a parting thank you to us loyal Peak owners.  :)

« on: June 14, 2012, 12:35:55 PM »
Hi everyone,

As some of you probably already know I have some new releases out. First up is my latest called Slow Dream out on CD from Projekt records:

You can order the CD directly from Projekt:http://www.projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=PRO00271, or from Steve Roach's website as a single or in a combo pack with other CDs http://www.steveroach.com/store/store.php?item=481.

The other release is an oldie. The first  album that I ever released back in 1986 on cassette is now out on vinyl (my first ever vinyl release) called Point of Arrival.

This release is a bit different then my current output, more in line with the so called "Berlin school" of music (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Micheal Hoeing, etc), but from a west coast point of view. You can pick it up at the following urls:
http://boomkat.com/vinyl/543940-loren-nerell-point-of-arrival

http://www.forcedexposure.com/artists/nerell.loren.html

Also, you can listen to the entire album (not 30 sec clips but entire tracks) first at bandcamp before deciding if you want to pick this up or not:

I hope you all enjoy the music, thanks for your support.  :)

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / The Downside of Software
« on: June 13, 2012, 11:54:45 AM »
I was just reminded today of one of the major downsides to using just software in our audio creations. Last week both Bias Software (http://www.bias-inc.com/) who make audio editing software for the mac called Peak, and Redmatica (http://redmatica.com/Redmatica/Redmatica.html) who make editing tools for software samplers, no longer exist. In the case of Redmatica it looks like Apple bought them out, so their software might make it to part of the next version of Logic Studio (most of their software was geared towards Logic's software sampler anyway). But in the case of Bias, it looks like they are gone for good, which to me is rather sad as I have been using Peak for about 15 years now (since version 1.6, last version is 7.03). Add to this numerous software plug ins that I use frequently (like NI's Spektral Delay) that are no longer supported, not to mention Sounddiver, Apples own midi sound librarian software that Apples no longer supports and does not work with their current OS. I guess this is nothing new, I've had other software in the past disappear (anyone remember Alchemy, or Masterlist?) but its all a bit frustrating since so much of what I do is reliant upon this stuff. I know nothing lasts forever but at least most of the hardware I bought even 30 years ago still works. Sorry, just had to rant.  ;D

Hi everyone,

Mike has already posted this under  the thread for the Intangible CD release in the Hypnos part of the forum. But I thought it might be a good idea to post it here as well since its a kind of Podcast. I put this together the other week to give everyone a chance to hear some of the tracks off of the new album, but also some past solo stuff from myself and A Produce. 16 tracks in all, 78 minutes of playing time for you to enjoy. So go check it out at the following link, its also downloadable for you to take with you:

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Hardware loopers
« on: August 03, 2010, 02:31:43 PM »
I think I am in the market for a new hardware looper. I'm just starting to think about what I am going to do next October and a looping box is pretty high on the list (right next to a new mixer). Anyone have any favorites they are using right now? So far I've been looking at Digitech's Jamman loopers, mainly the Jamman Delay version, and/or the Eventide Timefactor. Last year I borrowed a friend's Boss looper, which was ok, but not perfect. Any advice is appreciated.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / One or Two computer monitors?
« on: July 01, 2010, 12:28:26 PM »
My eight year old LCD monitor (has it been that long?) finally broke to the point that I can not use it in my studio. Originally I was thinking about replacing it with a single 27" monitor, but I noticed I could get two 22" monitors for about the same price. Any thoughts? Right now I am using two 17" monitors in its place which seems ok, but I would like more room.

Anyone into mixers? I'm looking for a new one for some live use. Been thinking about the Presonus Studiolive boards, here's a picture of one:

I'd like to have something with firewire connections if possible.  Feel free to post any boards you find of interest.

Everything and Nothing / Projekt wants you to fight piracy!
« on: February 15, 2010, 11:08:42 AM »
Sam sent this to me last week, maybe we can start a movement and make people aware the kind of damage they do to us artists when they choose to download, or at the very least make it more difficult for them to do so:

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Logic Studio 9
« on: July 24, 2009, 08:56:15 AM »
For those who care, Logic Studio 9 was released yesterday:

http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/

Looks pretty good, lots of new features. The down side for me is I will have to upgrade my studio computer to run it as it won't work on a G5.  :'(

To me its probably the best thing he has done. Having said that, I just heard from Barry that the copies that Hypnos and CD Baby currently have will probably be the only ones offered for sale.  :o So, if this artist interests you I would suggest you get your copy ASAP.
