i scooped up 10 new gos titles this week and i am blown away! the bfs/borghi disc did not get anywhere near enough attention! it is amazing! and as a means through which i speak is a wonderful drone junkie's fix! as is six impending clouds by netherworld. superb stuff!

yep - the man who made the offbeat cool (and made shooting dope sound like fun) has created a cd of some extremely cool ambient music. i am absolutely blown away by the textures and timbres of this soundscape! amazing!

i guess i am a hypnos artist - hmm. i like the sound of that.
i have added some cool stuff to my arsenal of sound making devices.
i purchased a brass Tibetan bowl but can't figure out how to make it sing. it has a great gong sound, however, and i have used that extensively. stretching one of those tones out makes an awesome atmosphere.
i was searching for violin bows on ebay and found violins instead - cheaper! they were brand new, from china. the shipping is $50 but the violin was only $7! $52 for a violin is a good deal so wow! - i am taking violin lessons. i will also be using the bow on my acoustic guitar, dulcimer and lap harp. it makes some cool noises.
i have also added bamboo chimes, a bodhran, an irish whistle and a native American flute (very small) to my repoirtoire. i am making some cool stuff.

Everything and Nothing / found sounds
« on: February 26, 2008, 07:03:43 PM »
i think about this often. i have made several tracks using nothing but processed found sounds and i look for them everywhere. the most interesting one i have is a can that is similar to an empty shoe polish tin that has about 15 pennies in it. i make some real cool sounds by swirling it around. i then process it numerous times and stretch it and i get some very cool drones and atmospheres.
i have also made a couple of rainsticks with toothpicks, cardboard tubes (especially the ones from wrapping paper) and navy beans, rice, black eyed peas and popcorn. i have plans to make some with metal tubes, screws and ball bearings and/or bb's.
i also use my grandsons' toys a lot. they sound extremely cool when the batteries are low.
i also use some more conventional devices like wind chimes - the bamboo chimes are awesome - and various rattles. pill bottles are very good for that.
what kinds of things have you used.
(steve roach used empty beer bottles on dust to dust.)

i have posted a free downloadable cd in memory of my friend, dave k, who passed away last month. you can find it here:
please listen and let me knopw what you think. it is some very personal music.

Everything and Nothing / dave k
« on: February 09, 2008, 04:28:32 PM »
greetings friends,
i was at my aa home group this morning. near the end of the speaker's message, he said something about his therapist, dave - that he had died recently. i was shocked! dave is one of the best friends i have ever had. we got sober together starting 20 years ago (he got there about 6 months before me) and we played softball together for 2 years in the mid 90's. he was a total class act and a dear friend. we did not, however, socialize together very often. our face to face friendship was almost exclusively at meetings or at trainings when we worked for the same rehab center.
anyway, dave had had chronic back problems for years - since the last year we played ball together. he was off work on sick leave when he began developing headaches and blurry vision. he went to the doctor and got some tests. he was diagnosed with cancer and died within three weeks - somewhere around january 12. i was away that weekend in wilkes barre where my father is recuperating from open heart surgery so i did not hear it announced at any meetings.
when the speaker talked about it i just sat stiff as a board and then began shaking, then crying, gently. i am still stunned. i hadn't seen dave since some time in june or july and he was doing great. his son had just turned 6 and was playing baseball and dave was so proud. (he and his wife had tried to have kids for years and finally were blessed 6 years ago with a son - luke. dave was 52. kathy is about 45.)
well, i have been working on some experimental and fairly dark pieces for a set that had no direction. i sat down this afternoon and polished a couple of the pieces and finished two wip's - including one alternate version. the spectre looms suddenly should be available for free download at late next week. it is a jim brenholts release and is dedicated to my good friend dave k - also a lover of ambient space music. (he was very twisted - he liked most of my stuff, too.)
i am extremely saddened by this turn of events. i thank all of you for your support.

Everything and Nothing / the sobbing stone
« on: December 13, 2007, 06:55:48 PM »
i had a thread on the old forum about this movie. little stevie philips wrote and performed the soundtrack and the music is glorious - my pick for 07's best cd.
i checked at lmbd and viewers give the flick a 1.2 (out of 10) but siskel and eibert give it 2 thumbs up. (? - they could not have watched the same film!) the posted review is also very positive.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / pro sessions

i picked up some loop bundles by pro sessions. wow! these have some very cool sounds and they were CHEAP! - $9.99 per set. i got 3 - tension theory, spooky ghost and sounds of unseen worlds. has anyone else ever used or heard of them?
