Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Re: Gear: Studio shots by Deb
« on: December 28, 2007, 03:32:30 AM »
I don't use 1, 2 or 3 ;D, mainly because I don't have a lot of equipment and connecting things up does not take a lot of time. I may look into patchbays at some point, but currently I am only working on one sound chain at a time.

I am considering how to do some live music so will have to get a mixer at some point.

How many chains of sound do people have running at once?

Merry Christmas everyone and best wishes for 2008

I use Sennheiser microphones, Novation supernova rack, Technics KN1400 keyboard, electric guitar, various acoustic sound sources such as glass, pipes, bells etc, Korg D16 portastudio, TC M3000 reverb, Roland VP9000, Tascam MD350, Roland VS2480...awaiting arrival of Korg MR1 and Alesis DEQ230D equaliser.

I tend to put everything through everything else, at least twice. Sometimes when listening to mixes I hear a sound and can't remember how I created it - tends to bring in a certain amount of chance and chaos.

I also like trying to create chance in the mixes too - processing some sounds in real time without knowing exactly how they will fit to everything else.

No computer software at all at present.

I've got a couple of Ron's releases, one of my favourites being 'Of Desolate Places And Urban Jungles', released 10 yars ago on a 3" CD by the Amplexus label. A really good mix of beats and sound recordings that creates it's own path.

Don't know if it's still available or not.

Art and Literature, Movies and TV / Re: Now reading

Just finished a book called 'Inubus'. Fantasy dealing with the landscapes of Ephemera, where the deepest resonances of the human heart can change the geography or lead them inot the worlds they 'deserve'....

I was always an SF reader as a kid and young adult, might have five books on the go at once. Really enjoy the modern science stuff like 'The Whole Shebang' by Timothy ferris and others about string theory....I like seeing how much further I can get each time i read them before I know I really don't have a clue what they are talking about.

Anyone have favourite or unusual ways of reading?

As a kid I'd read a book forwards and then read it backwards prargraph by paragraph (sentences or words was too difficult) - had a similar effect to the film Memento.

I also  liked to read the last sentence and paragraph and work out as I read how the auther would get from a - z. caught me out once as I read a book completely awed by the huge (SF) historical and civilisational range it was going to be covering. Could not work out how the author was going to do it, especially as I got nearer and nearer the end....until I realised I'd read the last paragraph of an excerpt from another book. ;D

And in a recent programme of 'Top Gear' in the UK BMW had a programmable car that went around the circuit unaided in a faster time than the human drivers could manage. Not a robot or a flying car, but somewhere between the two....

Jeremy clarkson was in the driver seat just in case, but apart from providing a commentary he was uneeded ;D

Getting in the habit of having an Immersion for late night reading/sleep mode. Harder to find better, in my collection at least, for complete chill mode without any distraction. Seems like Immersion 1 and the 'Sleep Chamber' disc from Immersion 3 are the best for sleeping, though 'Still' is good for sleep as well. I'm kind of taking the titles literally, and even use 'First Light' ease me into the waking world on early mornings. Seems to fit perfectly, but doesn't demand it either. The Immersions are fascinating, and I hope to put some of them on in the work room for a more active and loud listen. I like to imagine they are a kind of Bach organ work, or what he would be playing if transported to our time. It's a pretty tall order to be compared to Bach, but I think over time it is borne out by the music, and how it seems fresh, honest, and deeper over time. Also looking forward to Arc of Passion, which I was going to try to skip over, but couldn't resist, due in part to the sequencer stuff it has on it. Been getting in to more of this kind of electronic music via Ian Boddy and Tangerine Dream, and don't have any of the Roach sequencer albums, so it will be fun to see how Roach works with it. Looks like Arc of Passion will have a less dissonat sound than the Immersions, which I enjoy sometimes...

Light Fantastic is my favourite roach sequencer album.
