Everything and Nothing / Board Advice
« on: February 25, 2010, 07:07:31 AM »
I have been reflecting on some of the advice given, often by experienced artists on this board. To summarize: 1. Use real instruments, not loop libraries. 2. Pay for professional mastering services. 3. Do not write dark, droney music. It is a bad trend in ambient. 4. Do not release too much, especially on small, unknown labels (or netlabels). 5. Do not release on cdrs (or cassettes). A lot of this advice is probably good, and certainly eye- (or ear-) opening. I thought about apologizing for the way I have gone about things as mystified, but honestly, I am very happy with the music I have made, especially recently, and very satisfied with my Hypnos Secret Sounds release, for sure.

I will admit, that if I only had more resources, I would probably take more of this advice. But as a humble library worker, paid by the state, my studio is somewhat limited. At least for now.

Perhaps I should drop by Blackinfinity's studio when it is ready-- I could use some new gear?

Anyway, all very interesting, so I won't be "Ironic" and quote Alainis Morrissette about "good advice".

All tracks are free to preview. Some are quite nice.

Hypnos News and Announcements / Hypnos At Discogs
« on: January 05, 2010, 07:17:24 AM »
Hi folks! I don't know if any of you use, but I have noticed that though many discs from Hypnos are represented, there aren't just too many ratings or reviews featured. Perhaps Hypnos artists and fans would like to add data to the database? Dare I say positive data, or even just honest data?

Here is the HSS page:

And the general page for Hypnos:

Some releases are better represented than others, but quite a few only belong to a couple of people and have 1 or 2 ratings, which I am guessing is not accurate.

Just some thoughts.

Here is a little self, promotion, also I do like the images a friend did for me:

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Free Effective PC Anti-Virus

It solved some problems for me tonight:

It's a free program. The quick scan found nothing but the full scan found the 2 problems I was having.

(Sigh) 130000 files, and 2 were corrupt. It was enough.

Anyway, so far this program seems ideal-- recommended as a free alternative to the expensive ones like McAfee.

I hope this is not premature, but it is true and somewhat public now that mystified will be releasing a cdr on HSS very soon (as early as 12/2009).

I hope people will give the cdr a chance-- I found myself actually listening to it here in the studio a lot, which is not very common for me, as it is an easy listen and has lots of open space.

It will be called "Primal Mystification".

Essentially the music combines textured and tuned drone backgrounds with rhythms and sparse melodic touches. The first piece has a little of a "Roach"-ian feel, if I dare to say. The others are less simple to define, but I think people will like them.

Anyway, my project has been around for about 8 years, and not without controversy. Some say I am too prolific, some that I have made too many free releases.

It has always been my philosophy to release the very best on cdr or vinyl, and this I believe is one of those times.

Any questions or comments?

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Greinke's "Virga"
« on: November 26, 2009, 04:27:23 PM »
Any opinions on this one?

I had heard "Cities In Fog" and "Lost Terrain", and I especially loved "Lost Terrain".

But "Virga" surprised me. It is, I think, mature. It also seems to sacrifice complexity for emotional impact. At times, though, it seems to simply be a small ensemble sounding melancholy. That is an emotion he has mastered, for sure, but I kept wondering-- where are the strange synths, drums, and keys?

There is nothing at all psychedelic about this album. I am not into drugs, but I do like trippy music, and I missed that quality.

Perhaps in a few years, when I turn 40, I will have changed my mind? It could be.

Anyone else?

This cd sure is being played on the radio a lot. . .

Dark, swirling, foggy sounds with some field recordings.
