Which artists makes the best lo-fi ambient? I'm thinking something along the lines of Milieu and William Basinski. Hit me!

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Looking for my first synthesizer...
« on: June 08, 2012, 07:57:10 AM »
Hi there musicians,
I'm looking for a synthesizer to play around with. I'm not even an amature musician, but I kind of know what sound I'm after. I'm very fond of the Ozric Tentacles sound. I know they've been using Novation synths, but when I look at the video below I also see a Roland synth... I think. And if it can do string-like sounds, for ambient music, that would be VERY good too.

You can see a video here with a synth intro:
Ozric Tentacles, Synth-Jam, HD, Live @ Birmingham Hare & Hounds, 13th May, 2012.

Cheers!

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Bvdub - where to start?
« on: April 07, 2012, 05:55:55 AM »
Where to start when it comes to Bvdub? He seems highly spoken of on some forums, so I think it's fair to give him a chance. But looking at his catalog on Discogs he seems to have become quite prolific as of 2010.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Music like Quiet Music
« on: October 27, 2011, 02:58:59 PM »
Are there more music out there like Quiet Music? I am looking for recommendations. Melodic ambient without beeing too cheesy. I suppose there are tons of new age music, which I don't mind as long as there's some depth in it.

For fans of Ishq this should be interesting. They are coming out with an album in November 2011 called "And Awake".

Steve Roach continues the Immersion series by adding Vol. 5 to his catalog. It's wonderful to hear Roach trying out something new which he does on this release. It's very different from the other Immersion releases in that regard he doesn't do pure long-form drone works. Part 1 starts out with some purring sounds which continues for about 14 minutes. Then it sort of escalates and he goes wild with his glitch-tool on part 2. This is surely very unlike the other Immersion releases and it caught me totally off-guard. On part 3 he gives us a very interesting melody to work with, which goes on for over 30 minutes. The entire disc 1 is my favorite. But it doesn't stop here. On disc 2 he makes a long-form drone piece for those who want to immerse themself in the Immersion Experience.

Independent Music Reviews / Steve Roach - Arc Of Passion
« on: October 14, 2011, 09:53:07 AM »
"Moment Of Grace" starts out with some swooshing synth works. Undeniably very Roach-like.
At the moment this starts you can feel the electricity in the air and that something exciting is about to happen. The main piece "Arc Of Passion" begins with sequenced synthesizers that takes you into distant realms with a hint of a sci-fi theme. This "sound world" that we are being introduced to takes you back to earlier releases like "Proof Positive" with its propulsive and forward-moving feeling. Glimmering and colorful scenery is expandanded across the two speakers. A very strong release indeed. No wonder this was one of the releases that made me a fan of Steve Roach.

Independent Music Reviews / Steve Roach - Darkest Before Dawn
« on: October 14, 2011, 09:52:39 AM »
A pillar of sound rises up from the earth and touches the cloudy sky of the dark night. The moon is as big as ever. You are being totally immersed in the darkness but you are calm and serene. The sound is meandering and coming from all directions. You travel further into the night and the sound is piercing your mind. The sound becomes overwhelming and briefly you might want to escape but you return to the lonesome path in the night to find out what is within this black void that is Darkest Before Dawn.

Independent Music Reviews / Steve Roach - Immersion : One
« on: October 14, 2011, 09:52:03 AM »
I strongly remember when I discovered Steve Roach in 2009. Immersion: One was one of the first CDs I came across of his vast catalog. I listened to this piece while lying in the sofa - and somewhere in the middle I fall asleep and later on when the volume fades I wake up again. And I feel more relaxed then I've ever been. But most remarkably I feel I've been somewhere very, very distant whilst listening, or sleeping rather. This serie is still on-going and calling it "Immersion" is very suitable because this is pure cosmic therapy of the new millenium. Along with Vol. 3 this is the sound world I've listened most frequently to. There's a light dissonant tone in the music which is most noticable in the first half of the CD though there's nothing harsh about it at all. In fact this drone-work is purely etheric and can set a man in trance if he allows himself to.
