NODE - NODE 2 (DiN44)

DiN44 | 2014 | Limited to 1,000 copies
Release date 18th February 2014

Synth supergroup Node return with their first new release since 1995! “Node 2” features three of the original members, maverick producer and sonic legend Flood, renowned producer and composer Ed Buller and classically trained Doctor of music Dave Bessell. The band are joined by new member, Hollywood composer Mel Wesson, who has most recently provided the soundscapes for Hans Zimmer’s run of blockbuster films. This extraordinary collective take time out from their high flying day jobs to indulge their secret passion for all things analogue.  The result, “Node 2”, is the culmination of two recording sessions that took place over the last year and a half at Battery studios in London.

Featuring what is quite possibly the largest collection of vintage analogue equipment that has been assembled in a studio in recent times, this quartet drag their favoured analogue tools, crackling and bleeping into the 21st century.  Staying true to their roots the band improvised everything live and recorded straight to two track. The final result is edited down from the mass of material that was recorded but is otherwise presented as it was played, without the computer tidying up or overdubbing that has become part & parcel of most contemporary recordings.

The resulting nine tracks range from the classic Berlin sequencing of Shinkansen East and West to the moody introspection of Dark Beneath The Earth. Along the way we are served up such unclassifiable treats as March Méchanique, which mixes martial rhythms with Arabic flavours and subtle sequencing, or the extraordinary No Signal which pushes sonic boundaries, mixing custom written physical modelling software with analogue microtones.

Don’t miss this increasingly rare chance to hear what these legendary machines can do in the hands of experts. Presented with an extensive accompanying booklet that contains fascinating insights into the recording sessions and working methods “Node 2” is another must have release on the DiN label.

Electro Harmonix (Tetsu Inoue/Jonah Sharp).  CD reissue on Ambient World, an ambient classic.  I had to pay a lot for this disc as it's near impossible to find right now due to the sudden passing of Pete Namlook and the Fax label coming to a halt, perhaps (most likely) indefinitely(?)  Still no further news from the family or anything posted at all on the Fax website (www.namlook.de).

there are still some FAX cd's available here in normal prices: http://www.cue-records.com/index.php?cat=c13_FAX-RECORDS-FAX-RECORDS.html

about the price increase, it quite probably has to do with the shipping costs getting higher...

Parallel Worlds and Dave Bessell - 'Morphogenic'

DiN41 | 2012 | Limited to 500 copies

Release date 30th October 2012

Morphogenic sees a new collaborative project on the DiN label, although the name of Parallel Worlds should be familiar to DiN aficionados due to the two solo albums Obsessive Surrealism (DiN26) & Shade (DiN32) as well as the more recent collaboration with DiN label boss Ian Boddy on Exit Strategy (DiN37). Dave Bessell is, of course, a new artist to join the DiN roster, although his name should be familiar to lovers of analogue electronica due to his contribution to the almost legendary band Node. One of the four founder members of this group, Dave is also joined on the track Heterodyne by Ed Buller the world renowned producer and master of the art of sequencing large vintage modular synths.

Bessell has a formal education in classical composition and these skills blend perfectly on Morphogenic with the intricate, sequenced rhythms of Bakis Sirros aka Parallel Worlds. Whilst the eight tracks have all the fluidity and organic feel of analogue synth dominated pieces, they have a shape and form to them that make them fascinating compositions. As well as joining Sirros in the analogue arsenal with his mighty Macbeth M5n, Bessell also provides some very effective and unusual guitar backdrops. Bakis made extensive use of Serge, Buchla and Oberheim synths in this recording which contribute to the warm and organic soundscapes. Bessell also writes custom software that is employed to great effect in providing unusual and detailed textures through which the incessant, complex rhythms and beats of Sirros rise and fall.

iNDEX04 (DiN40) is now available on iTunes.

19
hi all,

iNDEX04 is the fourth DiN compilation album and includes two tracks each from the titles DiN31 - 39. The artists on show are Ian Boddy, Parallel Worlds, Markus Reuter, Erik Wøllo, Bernhard Wöstheinrich, ARC & Mazmoneth.

As with the previous three DiN samplers (iNDEX01 - DiN10, iNDEX02 - DiN20 & iNDEX03 - DiN30), DiN label boss Ian Boddy has mixed and cross-faded the 18 tracks into a continuous ambient mix that not only showcases the albums on the disc but presents an exciting and varied CD in it's own right. It also highlights the varied and intriguing music that the DiN label offers on it's releases from deep analogue synth grooves through vibrantly melodic instrumentals to powerful, epic ambient atmospheres. An intoxicating mix of the old and new beautifully presented in a slimline cardboard wallet with an extra flap which just adds to the value and collectibility of this disc.

DiNDDL12 Strange Attractors by Ian Boddy

"Strange Attractors" is a milestone for the DiN label in that it is the 50th album release (38 physical + 12 digital). As such it is only fitting that it should be by the driving force behind DiN, label boss Ian Boddy.
Recorded live in April 2011 at the Awakenings series of electronic music concerts the album showcases Boddy at the top of his game. Employing almost exclusively analogue sound sources he crafts a seamless blend of electronica spanning 76 minutes of sonic exploration.
The album opens up with "Amongst Dark Clouds" with it's nebulous, spacey atmospheres and wash of glorious, epic chords. Tracks such as "Crossing The Range" and "Return Vector" see Boddy pulling off the feat of live sequencing and keyboard playing, a difficult task in a solo concert environment. As the tracks build you can literally hear Boddy building the pieces brick by brick to a sonic crescendo before tearing the musical structure down again. A fascinating experience that uses his years of experience using analogue modular synthesisers to the full. Other tracks such as "Parabolic Excursions" & the encore piece "Trip The Light Fandango" use studio created trippy sequencer grooves. Over these Boddy plays a range of subtle keyboard parts which feature his analogue "Ondes Martenot" style controller. These soaring lines are built up using a looping device into beautiful ambient beds and phrases. The title track "Strange Attractors" is an all together different affair. Like some proto-sequencer soundscape it's organic pulsations seem to drift in and out of phase. Overlaid with darkly shimmering ring modulated textures it's dark, unsettling atmosphere is punctuated with beautiful mellotron flutes. Building to an intense climax Ligeti like choral intrusions heighten the sense of unease.
One of Boddy's best and most intense concert performance of recent years "Strange Attractors" showcases one of the UK's leading electronic musicians. With almost 150 concerts under his belt such experience really shines through on the complexity and inventiveness of this live show.
