Now Playing / Re: Currently listening, part 1

Listening to a track from the album series called Throne of Drones from 20 years ago.  Asphodel is the defunt label.  I think the track I'm listening to is either Jeff Greinke, Robert Rich or Mick Harris.  Sadly, this album was sold and digitized before I cared about labeling tracks and artists.  It's very deep bass and droney.  It happened during the ephemeral Isolationist genre of dark experimental ambient.  Still sounds good today...

What’s the track length?  I have all those “... of Drones” disks and can probably ID it for you.

I feel like vinyl manufacturers would try to prevent that from becoming a reality any time soon.

Possibly...  Maybe it's a technology they could license, and market themselves?

It's still far from being fully realized at this point.

Some interesting work being done by ZoStream; supposedly true lossless digital.

Their patent was granted last fall; they're currently chasing funding and working up prototypes.

Long discussion thread about it here:  https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/showthread.php/314365-Patent-Licensing-Advice

You’re going to have to add another 650 days to that release; Jliat is way ahead of you, at 711 days, 14 hours.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Nagging iTunes distortion problem solved.
« on: December 04, 2017, 03:21:56 PM »
I use iTunes on a dedicated PC to stream music all over my house via an AudioEngine wireless DAC. It works flawlessly, but there has always been an annoying distortion on some tracks, particularly ambient droning mid-frequency stuff (think quieter Steve Roach recordings, Jonathan Coleclough, etc.) I used to think it was an artifact of MP3, and just lived with it. But recently it's started to really nag at me, so I set out to eliminate it. I tried direct-wiring the PC to the AMP; new speaker wire; even lowering the line-level volume, thinking maybe the DAC was coming in too hot. Nothing helped.

Realizing that maybe iTunes EQ was to blame, I checked my settings; everything was set to "none" for EQ. Hmm... So I reset each individual file to "flat" instead, and BAM, distortion gone.

Damn, that was easy!

He and Roger King should make "Dust to Dust 2".  A top ten album for sure.

Arecibo - Trans Plutonian Transmissions

Dark Ambient Space music with Industrial overtones.  This was a one time side project of Lustmord made many years ago and it still sounds good today.  Not sure what the YouTube sounds like.

Love that album.  There were rumors of a follow-up, but it never materialized.

I've heard a few of the em:t releases over the years (Woob being a fave), but just discovered the whole discography on YouTube.  I've listened to all of them this week while working; wow, there are some really interesting sounds here.  Takes me back...

Everything and Nothing / Re: CD Disc Rot

I had a PDO disk go bad; Skullflower's "Xaman".  Google it; almost every copy went bad; I sold my copy, along with a CD-R rip I managed to get before it failed, on eBay for stupid money.

I've had a few others go bad too (for some reason, stuff on Crowd Control Activities had a higher rate of failure than other labels.). I've gone all digital now; now it's just catastrophic disk failure I need to worry about.  Lol

I got the Bandcamp download yesterday, and have listened to it several times.  I've always been a fan, but I think this is my favorite release so far.  Excellent work.

Don't get me started on ePackets, the subsidized shipping from China and Hong Kong to the US.  If you're a big company like eBay, you get to negotiate super-cheap shipping rates, which the rest of us subsidize.

 :D

File it in the "music my dog hates" section, along with every ambient disk with storm sounds in it.

I got the Bandcamp downloads yesterday; no real surprises in either release, solid work.  My only complaint about both releases is the presence of the high-pitched "dog whistle"; this sound is really grating, and ruins the mood for me.

^^^ That looks pretty slick!

I bought a new place, and was having trouble with my Airplay dropping out; turns out it was conflicting with my other router.  So, I got one of these:

http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Wireless/W3-Wireless-Audio-Adapter#overview

The sound is awesome, and it's on its own frequency, so networks are irrelevant.  The transmitter dongle acts as a sound card; I control itunes from my phone or ipad, just like with Airplay (but without drop-outs), and send the signal to a receiver dongle hooked to audio ins on my amp.  It even lets you transmit to multiple receivers, so you can stream music all over the house without the annoying lag of Bluetooth.  Highly recommend, especially for folks like me who can't solder like zzzone.net.  ;-)

I have a dedicated PC running iTunes.  It streams through an Airport Express to my main living room receiver; I control the library using the Remote app on my iphone or ipad, since the PC is in my office, not the main room.  Works pretty well.

For outside speakers, I have a Bluetooth transmitter on my receiver's outputs, which streams to a TDK Bluetooth speaker.  I'm planning to hard-wire some outdoor speakers to get better sound, and avoid the annoying time-lag of Bluetooth.

I've seen some newer receivers that have Airplay built in, which has me curious about upgrading...

Steve Roach - Bloodmoon Rising Arrived yesterday in the mail, all four discs & five hours of it. Needs a few more listens, but a solid effort from Steve. Not as layered and nuanced as Mystic Chords and Sacred Spaces, his last weighty tome of deep headphoning, but a good place to dive back into the "Sound Current" as he calls it.

Check it out on Bandcamp if you haven't yet.

Are the remastered versions of #2 and 3 noticeably different from the original Bandcamp versions?

I don't know how I would deal with losing internet for 2 months. 2 hours is bad enough.

Mo Boma - Jijimuge One: Hut Song/Chronos

Jijimuge is a great album. Not a lot out there quite like it. The closest comparison point would be Jon Hassell, who actually discovered the band and helped them to get signed to Extreme Records back in the day.

Mo Boma's four Extreme disks are some of the best things ever released on that label.  Beautiful, creative music.

After a few listens, I gotta say "meh".  If it weren't for Steve's name being on this, I doubt it'd get noticed amidst all the other great music out there.  I'll pass on this one, and patiently await his next release, hoping he recaptures some of that old magic while pushing new boundaries.
