I agree with Julio.Receiving the same offers for the last week.Guess it is like a promotion sale.

On the other topic, depending on what currency you are paying and shipping,I have paid for a download far more than what a physical CD would cost.In 2015,some download sites are still charging a premium for FLAC VS MP3.It is similar to what I receive on my shipping invoices from Fed Ex,fuel surcharge of $,like in 2004.What? When fuel is the lowest it has been in years, still a surcharge. It cost less now to store FLAC files than it did a year ago, same analogy with fuel.

AOC 1 is a masterpiece.New AOC in 2016.

That Markus Guentner is lovely.Similar feel for me as the first one he put out on Kompakt way way back.

No 1 by No. artists on BC.The label is No.Material Object and Atom.I find that MO always seems to have a constant drone or cohesive feel to his ambient tracks. Also uses some of the same samples over and over which ties his many works together.

Anamorph Specimens, also on No. on BC-A bit more techno here and there but again, its a whole mix.1 long ambient remix by MO included too.

Yagya-Will I dream during the Process on Sending Orb.Always enjoyed this.1 long mix with his usual dub-ambient-techno thing going.

Florealia is beautiful.Perfect late night drifting music. Most of the Aglaia releases are spot on.Some are not my taste but the purely ambient ones are.

Martin Gore-MG on Mute.
This is very cinematic.Unlike anything Depeche Mode has done with the exception of a few tracks in the mid eighties. No vocals. If you enjoy Aphex Twin,BOC or "IDM" this is for you.Recording quality is high. The short clip below shows his studio and modular racks.

If you want to see a 6 min clip of AWVFTS,here it is.I prefer the first LP to the second but I would see them live if I could.

I found out about PSB several years ago first with their EP and then album. It was outstanding. The idea was unique. The recording quality superb on CD.The new LP is as good.A bit more varied in tempo. Some tracks are quite sombre, others nearly R&B. See them live if you can.On tour now.

Martin Gore has a new LP coming out.The first track shows great promise.Very retro sounding and my first thought was Aphex Twin Ambient, then BOC.I lost interest in Depeche Mode a long time ago but this could be interesting.

Transonic-Virtual Current on FAX.2 long tracks by Robert Musso whom I think was the engineer for Bill Laswell. My favorite of a series of 3.

I am like Chris.
I simply will not buy anything anymore that I cannot preview. Then if there is one track that does not fit in,I can edit it out myself. The days of 30-90 second samples or selective songs are over.
I will never be into streaming as I want to own it in the best download format possible,FLAC.Even lossless streaming services will never have the obscure music I like and then there are copyright issues in my country.
With certain artists like Alio Die you sort of know in advance what you are getting so the risks for an obscure track are rare.
But that is the trade off I guess for the artist.Only give 3-4 songs out of 8-10 for preview, risking the loss of a sale to a potential buyer/fan versus having a person streaming for free.I am guessing that if someone does not want to pay for listening (something I do not believe in) then they will find an outlet where they can listen for free or move on to another artist doing a similar thing.
Unless I really want it,I will move on if I cannot preview all tracks. That is the new reality.

Alio Die is now on Bandcamp.Expect a ton of releases. Not sure why he is only posting previews of certain songs, sort of defeats the purpose as I wish to hear all the tracks before I purchase. But I have been an admirer for decades so there will be some new additions to my collection I am sure.

Fantastic Journey-The Circular Ruins and Mystified. On BC.The song titles are a perfect match to the music, as well as the artwork. It really feels like a journey. Some similar sounds from track 1 make it into the last track so it should be listened to from start to finish.Sort of reminds me of Seti Pharaohs. The usual high standard mixing from APK.

A Broken Frame-Marsheaux.A song for song remake from the Depeche Mode album. This LP from 1982 was disowned by the band and it is one of my favorite. These new versions bring the sounds up to date while keeping the melodies intact.

I may be there.

The Caretaker-An Empty Bliss Beyond This World. On BC.This is a strange one.The name and music is inspired by The Shining.I heard of this person in the media from reviews but never his music and his various side projects.Something about this one that is disturbing and ghostly and at the same time innocent and comforting.Interesting.

Labraford-Prazision.I think this was the first ever Kranky release. This was the band that started for me what I call the new lo-fi movement.Sounds like it was recorded on a 4 track cassette and was I think the template for the Kranky sound.Sort of post rock and similar to the first few SOTL releases.

RIP Edgar.I was never that into TD more Kraftwerk but no denying that TD were highly influential in the 70s.

Autumn of Communion-AOC 5.The final installment I am told.Judging by the artistic cover of tombstones,I guess it is the end.Great series.

Ishq-Winter Light.1 long track, very serene with all the usual sounds.Lovely.

Chameleons-Peel Sessions.Always amazing.Big North American tour of the Vox version in 2015.

Cabaret Voltaire-Red Mecca. My favorite Cab period is 78-83.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Bandcamp to collect tax on EU sales?
« on: December 30, 2014, 04:32:06 PM »
I read about this today.Though it does not affect me (for now) as I am in Canada, my understanding is that any music sold on BC including downloads will be subject to tax for the buyer.Seems it depends on where the buyer is located, not the seller.I am not sure how I feel that tax is to be collected on something like digital downloads when I am in another country.Nothing physical being transferred.More expensive for everyone involved.Plus you already have to deal with currency conversation. For myself, when I pay in pounds or Euro,it is way more. This will not stop me from purchasing on BC,love the site as they do not rip off the consumer by charging more for lossless and you can stream full tracks, both a huge plus.

Saw this today.Mathias Grassow is on BC.Now you can enjoy his drones as a lossless download.Mostly box sets are available.Morpheus is of interest to these ears.He is certainly the master of drone with a gigantic amount of output.

Waterbound is quite the set.I have enjoyed every track except one.It is dubby at points but I just make playlists with the ambient parts and beat parts separate.I was not sure about the whole Ishqamatics either at first but it has grown on me.Space is my favorite.
AOC 4 is also excellent, again every track except one for me.The whole AOC series has been stunning.AOC 1 is up there in my top ten all time.

Harold Budd/Robin Guthrie:White Bird ST-Saw this came out some time ago.Previewed, more of the same from both.Did not buy.Still great though if you enjoy their trademark sounds.

It certainly will not go down as a historical PF album in any way.But I think that was not its intention. Its origins were from the DB sessions and was originally an ambient album, meant as a companion to the DB.In that context,it works.I combined this album with the DB in Itunes using the crossfade function on my Ipod and made my own 2 hour album, took out a few tracks and it works very well. But yes, most of it is quite dull.On the other hand, this will be the last ever music by PF.

Saw it yesterday. It was mediocre at best,5/10.There have been many comparisons with 2001.Kubrick would be turning in his grave. 50 years later,2001 is still a reference. In about a year, this film will be more or less forgotten. I really wonder what passes for culture now.Was it entertaining, sort of yes.Did it say anything,no. Music was OK,a bit cloying.Good point Drone on.Blockbusters use the same 2 or 3 composers for everything. You think a sci-fi pic would use more electronic based music like the film Under the Skin but it will never happen.

Anne Hathaway-Every scene she looked like she stepped out of a Vogue photo shoot.Do they have lipstick, eyeliner and rouge in hyper space. One scene Michael Caine is an old man, next scene it is supposed to be 20 years later,he looks exactly the same.BTW-He is the best thing about this.In the spaceship, one crew member has his helmet on and continues with it on,the other no helmet-Why the helmets men? What is with that TARS robot-I really laughed out loud when I saw that. Is that Nolans answer to HAL.What is with the "They" all time. You want to sound deep and mysterious, use "They".

I can relax and say it was just a film and that is fine. But when I read reviews comparing it to masters like Kubrick or that they consulted NASA and so on.Come on.

BTW-Dave is right.Boyhood is truly wonderful.

LP released today.I listened to all the samples on Itunes while I wait for my CD.Some of the sounds are a bit Wish You Were Here,The Wall and of course The Division Bell. You can also see video samples at the end of the preview of the band in the studio. Will it be a classic as the final PF product, time will tell.
