Everything and Nothing / Fringe - anyone watching this show?
« on: February 13, 2009, 08:03:19 PM »
I find it interesting, the lead female is pleasant to the eyes in a girl-next-door sort of way. I also like the doctor as he reminds me of what a present-day vincent price should be like. Kind of eccentric and brillaint. I find it good on the gore factor, strange factor, make you think factor, etc...

Anyone else into this show? I dig it.

I currently have a DNS-323 NAS box w/2 500GB SATA II's in mirrored configuration. I have been debating on going Windows Home Server route or perhaps using my old PC for a DIY NAS setup utilizing free software. WHS is ~$100 which isn't expensive IMHO. My NAS cost me ~$450 when I purchased the unit + 2 drives back then. I can see it via my PS3 but can't get to any mp3's off it. I have it set up wirelessly. I read it works better wired as well as get some other software installed on the linux side and it will work (so they said).....

What do you use, if anything of this type and your thoughts on options available now. I am not looking to go drop a lot more money on it. If I can re-use the 500's in WHS via sofware raid that'd work out well. I believe I can connect to of them currently to the mobo in there now. Not sure if it's SATA I or II (I think I as the board is old nowadays).

May every one have a abysmally dismal xmas and a suffocatingly murky new year (doom version  ;D )

Oh! Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all here!  May times be peaceful and joyous to everyone.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Koasilator and mini-kaoss pad

Anyone check out that Kaosilator from NAMM video at harmony-central? Pretty cool but no midi in/out on it. It's $149 at guitar center (just the kaosilator). I am still debating on Kaoss Pad 3. I'll have to toy with my buddies KP2 as he hasn't sold it!

Stijn Van Cauter, mastermind behind Until Death Overtakes Me, Dreams of Dying Stars, In The Mist and many other projects has decided to start releasing his music on the net free. Go to and click on Distro. From there you should be able to find his stuff. It points to for some, if not all the releases. I highly recommend his Dreams of Dying Stars for sure. Nice ambient/drone/space music. In The Mist I think is more guitar-drone stuff. Other stuff is different due to the various projects. Until Death Overtakes Me is his funeral doom project.

Everything and Nothing / Extra copy of Inade Alderbran(sp)

....I ended up picking this one up plus another I didn't have and when it arrived I looked at the cover and thought...hmm, this looks familiar. I hope I don't have it! I listened to it once and put it away and saw I have it with slightly different artwork. So this one is up for sale for $11.00 shipped in the US, $12.00 shipped outside the US via paypal.

Everything and Nothing / RIP Isaac Hayes
« on: August 10, 2008, 05:08:42 PM »
Some may remember him from Shaft (theme song), others from Escape from New York or other films, or from him musical career. Or Chef from South Park. He'll be sadly missed either way! Rest in Peace Isaac!

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Mired In Twilight

MIT is my other project I got off the ground last year with a couple tracks over at but it sort of stagnated for awhile....(like months!). BUT! The good news is that it's got new life finally as we started recording some stuff and I have a rough mix/arrangement my counterpart put together from our recording session a week or so ago. It's about 6+ mins long and I am trying to see if we need to add any more instrumentation to it/layers I may put it up off the site linked possibly to get some feedback if anyone cares to check it out. We recorded drums/strings from his Triton Studio and used a couple tympani from Ugly Remnants loop set which sounds pretty good/deep. But it's a rouggh mix/arrangement and needs a little massaging/effects if we leave it as is. But there are two tracks we did last year (I did the arrangement for Dirge for Grace) and we both worked on the arrangement for A Call To War. This new track I'm feeling would be good for an ending track on a full length...just the vibe I'm getting from the arrangement.

Anyways, check it out if you like. It's more martial than dark ambient but I'm planning on adding that in there somehow....

Everything and Nothing / New PC build
« on: March 04, 2008, 06:48:16 PM »
I thought I had a thread here....oh well, if so, move to it please!

I am building a replacement for my main PC which is on 24x7. The specs are below. Cost ~$1450

Thermaltake Armor full tower
Thermaltake Toughpower 600W PSU (cable management which I like)
ABit IP35 Pro mobo
E8400 3.0Ghz Penryn CPU
Zalman 9500 HFS/cooler
2x640Gb SATA II HD's
XFX 8800GT 512Mb Extreme video card
Samsung SATA Optical DVD burner
2Gb DDR2-800 memory

I don't know if I'll be overclocking this one yet seeing it'll be on 24x7. I may do it a smidge (10% maybe ;-)

My DAW/Game system is:
Thermaltake Armor case
Thermaltake Toughpower 700W PSU (cable management which I like)
E6850 Conroe 3.0Ghz CPU OC'd to 3.6Ghz
4Gb (1024x4) Corsair Dominator memory
XFX 8800GTS 640Mb Extreme video card
Zalman 9700 NT HFS/Cooler
Samsung optical SATA DVD burner
2x500Gb SATA II HD's RAID 0 (for performance)
1x500Gb SATA II HD for audio/game installs
This one cost me ~$1900 back in october but had ~$120 in rebates. I have one/two for new build. Prices now would have saved me probably ~$200 or more due to price drops on stuff. I was going to go for the Q9450 Quad Penryn but decided not to seeing a) not many programs take advantage of multicore CPUs still and b) I read it only had an 8x multiplier vs 9x which limits how far you can crank it up to. I've read people have gotten the E8400 to 4.0Ghz on air cooling. I don't plan on going that high! I have learned that it's better to overclock with only 2 sticks of memory vs 4 as things get a bit trickier when you have 4 sticks. So 2x2Gb is easier to OC than 4x1Gb sticks as an FYI. Also a lot of good info in the forum on overclocking and builds in general. Same for forums.

I should be running the new system this weekend as the rest of the parts are due in thursday! So I know what I'm doing saturday during the day. Installing the hardware then XP Pro SP2 and partitioning it to maybe put Vista 32 bit ultimate on it when I get it from MS from doing a survey on my other new system.

Anyone here use their stuff in Ableton or Reason? They have a bunch of different racks, instruments, etc...and you can pay for a yearly subscription at and get their monthly releases. They are called micropacks. I signed up awhile ago and have gotten several already for use within Ableton Live. Some cool stuff. They just released a new one which I will be installing (along with others) to Live 7 later today to check out.

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Darkened Soul
« on: December 09, 2007, 03:54:32 PM »
Well here we are again with a new forum! Yay.....!  Anyways, started working on some new Darkened Soul material and a Mired In Twilight material. I have a short intro track for that project and a 7+min track for DS. I am going to probably start working to get a full length for both projects so I can have some new releases in the near future (next year most likely by the time I get both of them done).

I have artwork being printed up at a local Kinko's so I can list the split between Darkened Soul and Fearsore for purchase off my website. I'm also getting inserts done for both of my first two releases so they'll look more professional (hopefully!) and just make them up on an as-needed basis. The DS releases are listed off my Store page from my website and hopefully it's working as I expect it to.

I figured it'd be easier to have one thread for both my projects and not cluster up the forum ;-)
