Darkened Soul--
You could have ordered Rapoon's GM disc from www.rapoon.net for (I think I paid) $18, or could have been $16, shipping included.  Direct ordernig from Mr. Storey has been very cost effective for me. :-)

Yeah, I'll probably hold off getting things from across the pond if I can get them in the US from other places, like the artists themselves. I'll try to remember next time!

I made mine in I think 320kbps for high quality mp3's in the zip file off my website (have to register to be able to get to it). It's also at www.earthmantra.com website which includes artwork and also at last.fm as well (probably no artwork there for it). I find that when I make a track in Ableton I have to load it into Sound Forge and resave it as a Wave file after usually taking out extra silence or tweaking fade in/out on it. Then I render it to an mp3 as well at anywhere from 128-256kpbs depending on where I am going to upload it. I use Nero pretty much exclusively for burning. I also don't burn at max speed, I drop it down to usually 8-16x and use Wave files when I do CD-R's that come through via any sales off website. I have to get the shopping cart fixed as something isn't quite right after creating an account and logging into it.

Another track done on sunday so a couple/few more and I may send Mike Griffin a demo of it to see what he thinks for Secret Sounds release. I should really start thinking about artwork on this one too as well as a title for it....

I just ordered the Oophoi and Rapoon CD's this morning from GM. I hate the Euro conversion.... ;-( >$50 for two discs! I think I'll wait next time for getting them thru someplace in the US....but still looking forward to them. I believe I have both of the others (I know I have Cryosphere and think I got Netherworld...not I gotta go dig em up).

Everything and Nothing / Re: New PC build

Well it's up and running. I had to take the locking tab bracket out to get the video card to seat properly and be able to be locked down. Currently overclocked to 3.330Ghz and will be replacing the stock cooler with the Zalman now that I figure out it latches to the base vs screws in like the 9700 NT did. So clean CPU top, re-apply the grease, seat cooler and latch it down and put it all back together again and see how the temps are at that point. Overclocking temps are pretty good (less than 60c under load compared to high 60's on the E6850 system).

So far I am quite happy with it.

All parts are in as of yesterday! So now I may start on putting it together tonight and see if everything fires up ok. Depends on mobo layout w/regards to wiring from case. It'll be up tomorrow at the latest barring any failed components. Fingers crossed! For memory I went with Crucial Ballistix Tracer this time. I have Corsair Dominator in the other new system (4Gb).

Everything and Nothing / New PC build
« on: March 04, 2008, 06:48:16 PM »
I thought I had a thread here....oh well, if so, move to it please!

I am building a replacement for my main PC which is on 24x7. The specs are below. Cost ~$1450

Thermaltake Armor full tower
Thermaltake Toughpower 600W PSU (cable management which I like)
ABit IP35 Pro mobo
E8400 3.0Ghz Penryn CPU
Zalman 9500 HFS/cooler
2x640Gb SATA II HD's
XFX 8800GT 512Mb Extreme video card
Samsung SATA Optical DVD burner
2Gb DDR2-800 memory

I don't know if I'll be overclocking this one yet seeing it'll be on 24x7. I may do it a smidge (10% maybe ;-)

My DAW/Game system is:
Thermaltake Armor case
Thermaltake Toughpower 700W PSU (cable management which I like)
E6850 Conroe 3.0Ghz CPU OC'd to 3.6Ghz
4Gb (1024x4) Corsair Dominator memory
XFX 8800GTS 640Mb Extreme video card
Zalman 9700 NT HFS/Cooler
Samsung optical SATA DVD burner
2x500Gb SATA II HD's RAID 0 (for performance)
1x500Gb SATA II HD for audio/game installs
This one cost me ~$1900 back in october but had ~$120 in rebates. I have one/two for new build. Prices now would have saved me probably ~$200 or more due to price drops on stuff. I was going to go for the Q9450 Quad Penryn but decided not to seeing a) not many programs take advantage of multicore CPUs still and b) I read it only had an 8x multiplier vs 9x which limits how far you can crank it up to. I've read people have gotten the E8400 to 4.0Ghz on air cooling. I don't plan on going that high! I have learned that it's better to overclock with only 2 sticks of memory vs 4 as things get a bit trickier when you have 4 sticks. So 2x2Gb is easier to OC than 4x1Gb sticks as an FYI. Also a lot of good info in the www.anandtech.com forum on overclocking and builds in general. Same for www.eggxpert.com forums.

I should be running the new system this weekend as the rest of the parts are due in thursday! So I know what I'm doing saturday during the day. Installing the hardware then XP Pro SP2 and partitioning it to maybe put Vista 32 bit ultimate on it when I get it from MS from doing a survey on my other new system.

Herbst9 vs Z'ev - Through Bleak Landscapes - nice kinda noisy in a sense of what's going on. I like it. Interesting stuff.
After:
Sear Bliss: Glory and Perdition (if you like black metal check this band out, Trumpet/Trombone! AWESOME stuff! Excellent production, been in touch with Andras (singer/bassist), I have a few of theirs as well as Decade of Perdition DVD (unfortunately it's PAL....plays on PC but not on my Panasonic....grrrrrr. My old apex would have played it but I tossed it when it started having issues playing discs...). But it is pretty cool stuff for black metal. Well played, great production and again the use of Horns in it is a treat and not overdone at all, works very well in the music.

and after that...probably some DOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooommmmmmmmmm! ;-)

I've got 2 new tracks done and a 3rd that I may rename to fit the way I am naming the tracks (using english to greek translator to find closest match). So far about 25 mins with the 3 tracks. I need to work on at the minimum 3-5 more tracks so I can get up to at least an hours worth (preferably longer) of music to have a new release soon. No timeframe at this point. I should probably start thinking of a title for it as well as thinking about the artwork. I should also go revisit Abyss to see if I can salvage what's done and either add to it or do a total rework of it. I'd wanted to do 2 long tracks for what I'd call an EP which would have been (if I didn't lose cavernous track) pushing about 40-50 mins for the two of them. I want to rework Abyss, that could end up on the new release though. I don't know!

LOL, at least I've been a bit more active with it lately! Now to get Mired In Twilight moving forward as well...but that's a bit of a different beast.

I was debating on losing my M-Audio Omni Studio breakout box + Delta66 to maybe go the UltraLite but I've read some negative things about it. What's this Presonus item running? You're using it with a laptop right? I'd have to get a firewire card since the new systems mobo doesn't have firewire. I knew that in the beginning before getting it. I wanted it for overclocking and DDR3 support.

Anyways Mike, look at Ableton Live, comes in Windows or Mac flavor ;-) and at least two of us here are using it. You can download the demo and use pretty much all of it sans saving and possibly some stuff not there, i.e. instruments like Operator, Sampler, Tension, Analog and Electric probably aren't there. But Simpler and Impulse should be (sampler and drum machine program to drop samples into). With the drum rack in Live 7 it's MUCH bigger than before, now up to 128 slots, padKontrol maps correctly now too. Pretty slick piece of software but it isn't cheap. Not sure if they are offering cross-grades. You'd have to check their website at www.ableton.com. It's worth downloading to check it out anyways. ;-)  A lot of folks use it for DJ-ing...I have no use for that side of it but lots of stuff to do in it. WAY too much IMHO, plus Quicktime video support for those into doing videos with their audio.

I will have to see if former guitarist/band leader is still interested in an audio interface. Currently unemployed unfortunately so I can't offload my PC w/21" monitor to him for cheap yet. Too bad that Motu doesn't have MIDI. I don't think the mkII has MIDI either, he'd have to look at the Ultralite which is like ~$550. The other may be doable if he has the cash. I ain't fronting anything for him/anyone cept myself ;-)

I'll let you know. If you sell it, that's fine. Don't wait too long on response from me on this.

i am listening to mike's sorta collab with fearsore - absence of absolutes and it is a great cd! it has all of mike's signature dark drones and deep atmospheres. i am not familiar with wiley wells but would like to find more of his stuff.

Well, you can check out what he has over at www.myspace.com/fearsore to see if he has anything new(er) posted there. I don't think he's got a regular website like a lot of us do.

Everything and Nothing / Re: What are your plans and goals in 2008?
« on: January 08, 2008, 02:20:53 PM »
Well, I left Shroud of Bereavement to concentrate on my own projects so 2 goals are to have  2 full length releases, one for Darkened Soul and one for Mired In Twilight (which I'll shop around to mike this time ;-) ). Continue learning guitar to eventually add some of it into the music quite possibly (acoustic most likely unless I got electric on the 7 string for some evil drone sounds.....muwhahaha

Lose some weight is another goal, get back into some form of exercising.

When a) I figure out how to put a picture in the post and I get my *studio* area set up and gear on the desk I'll take a photo or two to show the layout. Maybe even sneak the guitar stand in there ;-)

Uaral - Sounds of Pain (FINALLY I have a real copy...took me forever to find it!)
Uaral - Lamentos a Poema Muerto (official debut)

They're from Chile, play doom but use flute, organ, piano acoustic guitars (beautiful stuff here), a variety of vocal styles (growls, screams, black metal, clean, in native tongue and I think some english) but it's really REALLY cool stuff! Beautiful guitar work (classical/acoustic/spanish style). They have a fan page over at myspace where you can check out a couple tracks or so. A real jewel in the rough as first time I listened I didn't really pay a lot of attention, on a burn to CD it was a whole new thing! Floored me!.

Hi, I don't know what they have for tabla/indian stuff. I know they have an acoustic guitar thing out recently but probably wouldn't be in the subscription, i.e. buy separately. Not sure who has them. Check out TrackTeam threads over at ableton forum too for more free stuff for Live.

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Re: How do you record?
« on: December 23, 2007, 05:50:29 PM »
I have 2 DAW's as we want to call them. A desktop (newly built overclocked 3.0Ghz C2D E6850) and I put my Delta66 + omni studio breakout box into it. I was debating on going with the M-Audio Ultralite for ~$550. Lot's of outs/ins and has MIDI on it. And it's firewire so portable. But I'd have had to get a firewire pci-x card for my mobo since it didn't come with it onboard. I hear FW is like zero latency compared to USB interfaces but I don't know firsthand on it. I use Live with the omni-studio and MIDIMan 2x2 for MIDI connectivity for the synths.

My laptop is another issue. It has the built-in video cam/audio into the display and I get nothing but feedback when I leave volumes normal. I have yet to find a way to completely turn it off so I don't have that problem. So in the meantime I just work within Live and will copy the .als file over since both systems have the samples (in different locations so some tweaking will be needed to duplicate it on the desktop). Glad to see Ben and Mark using Live. It's a helluva piece of software IMHO.

If you have firewire and see a lower/zero latency go with one of those. If not look at the USB options. I've seen some complaining about the M-Audio Ultralite on the net so you may want to read up on it before getting it. For me, MIDI and audio in/out is what I am looking at. I don't care about effects on the unit, etc...that's what the software is for.  The laptop is an HP Pavilion DV9000T custom built which I updated the HD's to dual 120's then swapped the boot disk to a 250Gb due to running out of space with Native Instruments K2->K4->K5 installation. Nice 17" widescreen and price was decent searching for HP Laptop coupon last year, saved an additional $132 over HP's $150 when configuring it. Helps to search for them before buying (coupons).

Anyways, that's what I have along with M-Audio BX8a powered Studio Monitors aside my 20" WS samsung LCD on my Producers desk from Guitar Center ($399 I think, got it for $230 from friend who works there). Nice 5' desk w/42" top shelf and under it in middle you can rack-mount gear. I have my furman power conditioner there.

If I don't log in before X-Mas, HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL OF YOU!

Mike

First you can never have enough sounds, just like CD's! LOL. It is a helluva program if you ask me with what you can do with it. I am still scratching the surface and I've been using it off and on since I got into it well over a year ago or so with Live 3.0.2->3.0.4->4.x->5.x->6.x->7.0.1. There's a LOT to learn on it just from the standpoint of understanding what everything is in the first place. If I understood the guts to synthesizers/synthesizing I'd probably be a lot further along......but seeing I should have some more time on my hands I should buckle down and dig out the lessons (recommended to go through them all as I review them now and then and still haven't gone through them completely) and the manual! And of course continue working on learning guitar more too.
