Hello Forrest,
Yikes! I'm sorry to read about your unpleasant experience. It is good to know that you made it through and are home to heal. Best wishes for a quick and complete recovery. I look forward to more music from you.

I used to have the Public Image album on vinyl. As I recall, there were some pretty interesting musicians playing on "Rise" including Ryuichi Sakamoto and Steve Vai. Vai turns in some pretty crazy acrobatic whammy bar guitar on the title track.

It's great to hear more of your music Saul. I'm enjoying a little ambient film festival today between watching your videos and the short film, "Intangible", with music by Loren Nerell and A Produce. Cool!

That's good news Loren. I really like the piece from the film and look forward to hearing more from this collaboration. I enjoyed your mixes on the recent Dean De Benedictis release, "A Cambient Variations" .

Everything and Nothing / Jon Hassell and Dhafer Yussef in Concert
« on: February 15, 2009, 10:25:05 AM »
I just enjoyed a wonderful evening of music at the beautiful Chan Centre here in Vancouver. Jon Hassell along with his current band, Maarifa Street (featuring among others, Peter Freeman and J. A. Deane) finished their tour in support of his new ECM release. Opening the show was Tunisian musician Dhafer Youssef.
Youssef's virtuoso oud and inspired vocals were accompanied by piano, acoustic bass and the the amazing drumming of Satoshi Takeishi, a mixture of Jack DeJohnette and Glen Velez. A Beautifully intense set with stunning vocal performances and intricate rhythmic interplay.
Jon Hassell's performance was a gorgeous tapestry of deep dreamtime melodies from he and his violinist backed by the harmonically rich, sometimes glitchy sonic stylings gently pushed along by minimal percussive suggestions and dub bass lines. One portion of the music sounded a bit like Hassell's narcotic trumpet was playing over a Steve Roach atmosphere. Very, very sensual music to say the least. I look forward to the ECM release, which comes 25 years after his last recording for that label, the milestone, "Power Spot".

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: Jorge Reyes (R.I.P.)
« on: February 12, 2009, 01:14:52 PM »
I too, am in a bit of a state of shock from this truly sad news. I had the pleasure of spending a few days with Jorge back in May of 2000. Biff Johnson and I flew from Sacramento to Tucson to serve as roadies for Steve Roach's annual concert there. The day we arrived Steve and Jorge were emerging from an all-nighter in the Timeroom. They had just recorded what was to become "Cave Dwellers" on "The Serpent's Liar" CD. They had been working that week on material for the "Vine ~ Bark & Spore" release as well as preparing for the show.
Jorge was an amazing spirit. I remember asking him if he worried about stepping on the clay whistles and flutes that were placed on the floor near his feet where he often danced. One of the little whistles was hundreds of years old. He said something like, "if it happens, it happens." He lived in the moment. A favorite memory is sitting in Steve's backyard having a tech meeting about the show when Jorge appeared with a bottle and shot glasses and proclaimed, "Now is the time for tequilla". Best wishes for your next journey, Jorge. Thank you for the blessing of your spirit and the gift of your artistry.

I agree, Harry's got it going on!
My wife, Lindy is the Executive Director of an arts complex. It consists of a 500 seat theatre, a 2nd smaller theatre, an art gallery and adjoining ceramic, painting and photography studios. Previously she was the Executive and Artistic Director of the Vancouver international Children's Festival. She has been involved in the performing arts all of her life.

Everything and Nothing / Re: CD-R Deterioration
« on: January 10, 2009, 01:12:18 PM »
I have been checking some of the CD-R titles in my collection that have been mentioned in this thread and have been lucky so far but still have many more to check. Unfortunately my copy of "Lumina" by Vir Unis is toast. Too bad!
The last time I was in California during the late summer of 2007 I talked with Lloyd Barde and he made it pretty clear that he didn't really care for CD-R releases. Probably because of the return and replacement hassles. I think I will check the Saul Stokes wooden box releases now. It would a real shame to lose those!

John,
It's great to have your site up and running again. That's quite the relocation and renovation adventure you and yours have been through. The new 'joint" sounds wonderful, congratulations!

Forum Member Projects News and Promotion / Saul Stokes - Vast Remixes
« on: August 04, 2008, 05:05:21 PM »
I have been listening to some of Saul Stokes music on my iPod during my morning walks in anticipation of the release of "Villa Galaxia". As I was scrolling through the selections I came across 3 forgotten pieces that were part of the "Vast" remix project. Pete Kelly "remixed" "Chrome Garden"", Masse/Memoire did "Lighthaus" and APK as TCR produced "Adrift", although I don't recall what Stokes piece he referenced. They are all wonderful! I was wondering whatever became of this project. Saul was supposed to have circulated several discs with his files on them for interested parties but these three pieces are the only ones that seemed to have surfaced. There is no mention of the project on Saul's website and all previous Hypnos Forum discussion was lost in the "Big Crash" way back when. Anybody have anything to share?

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: R.I.P. Backroads Music
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:07:36 AM »
I am sorry to read about Backroads Music closing down. Lloyd was an incredible supporter of the various genres of electronic music (also world and folk) as well as being a knowledgeable and friendly guy.
I will fondly remember the many visits that I made to the Backroads warehouse for the sidewalk sales when I lived in Sacramento. Since living in Canada I managed to drop in when visiting California last summer. Lloyd was helpful as always and I drove away with a box full of wonderful music. I certainly wish him the best for what comes next.

Hello!
Hey jkn, is there a problem with the Atmoworks site? I have just returned from being away for over a week and can't seem to connect regardless of what server I use. I'm just wondering if I missed something?

Recently I have enjoyed:

Perceived Distances (Blue Oasis) - A generous collection of various artists' tracks that flows quite nicely. Great job APK!
React (DIN) - Robert Rich and Ian Boddy recorded live at the Star's End 30th Celebration Concert last year. Sounds like it was a great show. They get their groove on in a serious way a couple of times!
Asunder (steveroach.com) - Nathan Youngblood
and
Mantle (steveroach.com) - Brian Parnham
Both of these offerings from Roach's new label are great textural/drone/ambient sound journeys. Very earthy. Recommended and available through the Hypnos store in addition to Steve's website.
An Opera for Four Fusion Works (Hypnos) - I finally listened to Vidna's series from beginning to end over two sessions. A wonderful exploration of possibilities.
