BTW, if you want to check out OPN I would recommend Rifts, it's a nice collection of three of his recent vinyl albums on CD

Emeralds have been going for a few years, the self-titled album on Hanson is a pretty recent effort

I'm a big fan :)

Their early stuff was more cosmic drone, but their recent stuff has more melody and sequences, which with the guitars I find more reminiscent of Manuel Gottsching

Music Gearheads Tech Talk / Re: Battery operated sound generators?
« on: November 20, 2010, 06:36:39 PM »
i like battery operated stuff, and often record loop/drone improvs out in the wild
some of my faves
with speakers
bleep labs thingamagoop 2 noise box
casio pt-82 simple analog preset keyboard
yamaha cs-01 analog synth
yamaha pss-380 editable fm synth
yamaha vss-30 sampler
without speakers
chimera bc16 controlled by yamaha cbx-k1
ipod touch used for apps and loading sounds into vss-30
korg kaossillator
korg microkorg
and if you need speakers try the roland mobile cube
i usually run stuff through a monotron for filtering, pandora for fx and boss dd-20 for looping, if using more than one thing at once i use an edirol m-10mx mixer

28
I'd probably get another repeater and perhaps a simple analog polysynth with lots of knobs/sliders like a juno-60 or ax-60

I use a repeater and 2 dd-20s for maximum ambient looping :)

Everything and Nothing / Re: Is there such a thing as a "black CD"???
« on: July 23, 2010, 03:00:22 AM »
the first four volumes were released by a different company and were definitely silver pressed CDs, with a black vinyl effect label on top, the new ones are on what appears to be a black CDR, as bottom is black too, unless someone has started pressing black CDs...

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Re: Robert Rich Tour Blog

Having put on and attended lots of ambient/EM gigs over the last few years I find that 'karaoke' style EM can be OK if it is done well and is entertaining, but personally I find it a lot less engaging than a real live performance, where all the elements are performed live and there is little or no pre-recorded backing

Everything and Nothing / Re: The price of CDs
« on: March 22, 2010, 02:19:07 PM »
I very rarely worry about the cost of a CD if it's something I want

I am more easily tempted to try stuff if it is less expensive and quite like bulk purchase offers

I would never not buy something because it was too cheap
