Everything and Nothing / Ayahuasca: drug or sacrament?
« on: August 15, 2010, 12:27:22 AM »
Anyone familiar with this topic? Some famous people like Sting and Tori Amos have used this psychedelic and it has many proponents saying it can cure some mental illness and even physical illness, and that it is not harmful (like ecstasy and other synthetics).  Any "experiencers" here?

Lovesliescrushing-Girl Echo Suns Veils. Noise never sounded so peaceful.

Rudy Adrian-Distant Stars. Excellent deep space music.  There are some annoying "glitches" on this as on one of his other Lotuspike discs, not sure what that's all about, but otherwise the music is flawless.

Sad Lovers and Giants-The Mirror Test Redux. Fantastic post-punk/new wave UK band from the glorious 80's.  Neato echoey guitars a la Chameleons, Cure, etc.

Well you don't wanna SCARE your girl out of the bed, do you?....

My recommendation: Harold Budd/Cocteau Twins "The Moon and the Melodies"

In my experience females don't "get" ambient music, especially the dark stuff, so keep it light n'ethereal...

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Celer "Dying Star"

Another good one from Celer, on the Dragons Eye Recordings label.  Limited 500.  This is pretty basic Eno-type ambient, analog-synths (as opposed to Celer's heavily processed environmental releases), maybe most similar to "In Escaping Lakes" on Slow Flow Rec.

Just got this last night, fantastic! Some similarities with the Aqua Dorsa release by way of glitch, guitars, n' drones.  Even Vital Weekly liked it (although again FDW states "nothing new under the sun". Oh brother...)  The cover photo is totally spellbinding.  Another big winner from Glacial Movements!!

What the hell is this above?? That's my post! Is this some kind of spam thing?  ???

LOWLIFE-various/everything.  R.I.P. to their singer Craig Lorentson, who I just discovered died recently (June or July 2010): one of the finest vocalists to come out of Scotland, fronting one of the greatest underground "cult" bands of the 1980's (featuring Will Heggie, ex-Cocteau Twins).  They should have been HUGE.  Only 44 years old...Playing it loud and proud today in CL's honor!

Other Ambient (and related) Music / Dark Duck prices
« on: August 11, 2010, 11:45:03 AM »
Is it just me or do Dark Duck prices seem kinda high? I was going to place an order for $12.50, then the shipping comes up to $5.00(!) within the US.  So $17.50 for a CDR?  I think if you're doing a small run, obscure label on CDR, discs should be going out the door for no more than $12 (total).  Otherwise it makes me not want to invest in these releases...See Ambientlive for a good example of how to do it right: about $10 to $12 POSTAGE PAID WORLDWIDE for their single albums.   8)

Nah, I think it was 2008 for An Aerial View.

Yeah, I like the digipak idea too for Hypnos, should be good.

I wasn't saying there was ill-will involved, I'm saying Mathias deserved to have a proper US release and for some reason it has never happened.  When there always seems to be a delay with one artist, a person can start to wonder, though.

Seems strange Projekt would release a solo Mark Seelig CD but not be interested in Oophoi!  Sam Rosenthal's loss...

As for Alio Die, Projekt doesn't really release his music anymore, at least not for a few years now.

In my view, Rosenthal seems to release music based on his "friends" taste instead of the public's.  I mean, ERIK WOLLO on Projekt?? I really like the Wollo Projekt release "Gateway," but this release seemed more like a "favor" to Steve Roach than anything else because they did that collaboration on Projekt.  To me it doesn't fit the label at all.  And that Seelig release "Disciple," didn't really understand that one either.  Can't see sales of these being too high.

I think we need to start a petition for an Oophoi Projekt release.

Now that I think of it, Mathias Grassow got a raw deal as well by being denied a Hypnos release.  Never understood why Hypnos would not put out even ONE Grassow disc yet release stuff by virtual unknowns in droves.  If the "Path of White Clouds" reissue ever comes out on Hypnos I'll eat my words. But until then...

I would think Projekt would be interested as well.

The Roach Productions I believe was started as a vehicle for newer artists who Roach has helped with their music production, like Brian Parnham and Nathan Youngblood.

Brendan Perry- "Ark" If you're a DCD fan this is very much worth getting.  He used only synths and samples so it's very synthetic (and to its detriment in spots, too polished sounding), however  there are some GREAT songs here that would've fit nicely on a Dead Can Dance project had they not disbanded so long ago (can't believe it was almost 15 years ago!)

Create-"Kindred Spirits"
Type O Negative-"October Rust"
Erik Wollo-"Gateway"
Jeff Pearce-"Daylight Slowly"
Mathias Grassow-"Dissolution"

No, no sound issues yet on these discs...

You're right about SPV really screwing up some of the KS reissues.  Don't forget the awful distortion on "Picture Music."   8)

Whatever they are, they look cheap and they probably were cheap to manufacture.  Can't understand why an artist with the name recognition and virtually guanranteed good sales of someone like Klaus Schulze would want to put a music release on some kind of other multi-media type disc, for the reason it "looks neat." SPV/Revisited achieved the "vinyl look" fine with the label side "grooves" on all the previous KS reissues.  Who care's what the bottom of the disc looks like?

How's the new album coming, Phobos? Will it be a physical release as on "Darkness Within"? I love DW, everyone on the Forum should definitely check this out!

No, you're not alone in your summation.  It's been really hard for me to get into this.  The sound is so different from the classic Roach we all know, and expect--maybe this is the "problem."  This album is not drowned in reverb and the music is more "up front," if that makes sense.  If ECM went purely "electronic", maybe this would be the result?  I had a good listen at work today and started to appreciate what he did here.  This is one you might need to put on the shelf for awhile and come back to with new ears.
