Natural Snow Buildings - Shadow Kingdom (a monster folk/psychedelic 2-CD set w/comic book that is similar to their Snowbringer Cult release on Digitalis; sounds much better to me than their last couple of cassette releases, which sounded like extended demos)

In the last week and then some:

Asher - Miniatures - Sourdine - 2xCD
(Ashy piano loops...you know done in that William Basinski and Caretaker hauntology scheme of things. Actually I found the release to be quite adorable and my girlfriend actually complimented on the atmosphere...mentioning something romantic about it? Perhaps but I find it to be more solemn and dusty...)

Philip Jeck - Vinyl Coda I-III - Intermedium Records - 2xCD
(Since I played the Asher I had this feeling that I needed to play some Basinski or Celer's "Capri"...but instead I made an effort to search for this long lost classic...anybody remember Jeck's early work? I found this work to be "original" in the sense that the man composes music through turntables and effects...yet his work sounds entirely his own...by all means if you find yourself a fan of The Caretaker or William Basinski...do yourself a favor and buy this...it will be expensive but a worthwhile investment...in my humble opinion it has not aged a bit and sounds fresh as ever)

Ian Hawgood*Le Mepris*Ryu Furusawa - Mobeer - 3"xCDR
(Nice little ambient and electronic pieces...I found the Hawgood tracks to be particulalrly good in spite of all the releases and similarites I have found in each. The packaging is fabulous and you get a free beer mat....unique stuff but then again it's a label related to Moteer, Lacies, and the extrodinary Cotton Goods)

Maju - Volume 3 - Extreme - CD
(To those who like ambient with texture and abrupt little glitches...I always found this artist to be very underated. Imagine Tetsu Inoue releasing something for Touch...I would have to say that Ben Frost and Lawrence English sound like this artist..not the other way around...do yourself a favor and buy all five albums while they are available)

You should try to track down Hosomi's 'Open Silence' if you can.. or if you haven't already. Its one member of Maju, comes with a nice DVD too. http://www.discogs.com/Hosomi-Open-Silence/release/1499627

Sadly Commune Disc is a tough label to crack, very hard releases to find, but they're totally worth it.

Today:

Solo Andata — s/t
I see that the 12K sound has finally advanced to the point where it sounds like Alio Die.

But seriously folks this is a great CD. Lots of water gurgle and soft drones.

Milieu — Of the Apple
I like Milieu in both ambient and IDM modes, but it's so hard to keep up with his output. This is one of his better ambient records, though there are probably 2000 I haven't heard yet. I like the grainy sound he achieves in this one.

Seefeel — Quique [Redux Edition]
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. The bonus tracks on the Redux Edition are sometimes slight. I'm still noticing details in the music after almost fifteen years, so that's got to mean something.

Mountains — Etching
New Mountains is an LP-only live recording. Really nice work ... I might like this better than Choral from earlier this year.

Solo Andata actually is a great group(artist?) with a 2006 album released on Hefty..."Fyrus Swan", or something like that...real nice with a bit too much guitar noodling to make it perfect

Jay Farrar & Ben Gibbard - Kerouac's Big Sur - One Fast Move Or I'm Gone - very good stuff so far, sort of stripped down Son Volt with a few Gibbard tunes thrown in.
Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson - Break Up - pleasant, poppy stuff. Scarlett J. has an interesting voice, though Yorn sings most of the tunes.
kings of convenience - declaration of dependence - very laid back acoustic pop, even more quiet than their last release. nothing earth shattering here but very enjoyable.

That's enough pop, how about some ambient...I'll start with some Leyland Kirby & see where that takes me.

(a very stripped down sound -bass guitar- minimal and intriguing somehow..)

(took many months before its arrival, romantic-kinded, nostalgic drone ambiance)

(musique concrete from another ethnic age.. fascinating stuff)

kevin drumm - imperial horizon
(a most delicate soft longform-piece, a highlight of the year for me)

steve roach - afterlight
(interesting to read others' perception on the boxset, but this one works best for me!)

bvdub - we were the sun
(sweet indeed, but a nice one)

thomas koner - aubrite
(sublime! i'm praying, praying for a re-issued boxset of his older works..)

Saw Scanner last night as part of an otherwise underwhelming festival of collage music that included Negativland, Chris Cutler (who was apparently very good, I last saw him with Pere Ubu) et al.

Picked up two discs by Scanner that I quite like:

52 Spaces and Rockets, Unto the Edges of Edges

I'm grateful that when sampling voices and phrases he avoids repetition. The visuals for his live show are quite delicious as well. The challenge, as always, is rhythm. It's use in most electronic/"experimental" music is never very sophisticated or subtle.

Ran into Scott Morgan (loscil) who is releasing a new one in 2010.

- Robert Davies: Terrestre (upcoming on Dataobscura ... Nice!)
- Murcof: The Versailles Sessions (Lots of interesting material on this. Will take a while to estimate its worth.)
- Lawrence English: A Colour For Autumn (can't get enough of this one)
