np:  Max Corbacho - The Talisman   ... this, Breathstream, and Ars Lucis are all amazingly beautiful.

was:  Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown ... this is a truly excellent album from them - multiple spins the last few weeks.

Heard the Them Crooked Vultures - New Fang track on the radio several times now - wow, cool.   John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl, and Josh Homme - nice lineup.

Been listening to a lot more demos lately, but since none of that stuff is (yet) available to the public, I'll skip right over mentioning it.  But, as far as recent listening of the variety that's readily available for purchase/download...

Mamiffer - hirror enniffer
I guess this is an attempt to blend delicate and pretty musical elements with rougher, more aggressive noise/metal sounds (this is on the Hydra Head label, after all).  As I listen I find myself swinging back and forth between thinking "this is sort of an interesting blend" and "I hate this, it sucks, turn it off."  Maybe that's a good thing, and I need to listen a few more times before this recording's is properly revealed to me, or maybe this will just be the last Mamiffer album I listen to.  This is a duo from Seattle, and I think it's a guy and a girl.  Kind of a neat concept, so maybe I should go back and try to like it again.

Viridian Sun-- "Infinite In All Directions"-- trippy and cool like science fiction
Sans Serif-- "Tones For LaMonte"-- lovely drones, as I like them

At this very moment I'm listening to The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing.   I've also been listening to Muse - Origin of Symmetry in the car.

I've also been listening to a few demos although I highly doubt my demo pile is as deep as Mike's... :-)   I had one stuck in my player most of the day yesterday - ambient goodness.

i've been buying too many CDs lately, just insane.. ??? :)
well;

thomas koner - aubrite
thomas koner - teimo/ permafrost

(perfect deep quiet ambience of the highest order for the snowfall here at the moment..)

seattle phonographers union - s/t
(fantastic fieldrecordings rarely heard like this, all so fresh and crispy..)

jana winderen - heated
(a bit like Koner, exploring deap icy seas, nice one)

aglaia - reverberant skies
(still need to give this a full listen BUT so far this sounds terrific, each disc (3) presents an own feeling; White Maps sounds like Aglaia meets the droney Oophoi, Naked Movement sounds almost like Stephan Mathieu's sensibilities, and Reverberant Skies like a Vidna Obmana's continuation of the Memories Compiled CDs..)

The new Lucette Bourdin release on Earth Mantra is, well, I'll spare you the "movie critic" words like "arresting", "hypnotic", and their favorite..."compelling." Just listen to it. You won't want to stop. Definitely one of the finest ambient artists working today.

- Jonsi and Alex: Riceboy Sleeps

Very listenable. The Sigur Ros influence is clear.
I'd say it sounds like Mum meets STOTL.
Kinda material I especially enjoy.

Been a while since I posted last...which only means a lot of music to mention.....

Alec Cheer & Alistair Crosbie - No Monsters - Lefthand Pressings - CD-R
(Many have heard me run my mouth off on the work of Alistair Crosbie....like the last album from 2008 this one in my humble opinion seems to be much cleaner and less distorted.  Similarities can be found with the more ambient pieces of Tim Hecker and the more subdued Aidan Baker....Highly recommended)

Alistair Crosbie - The Last Day Of Summer - Lefthand Pressings - 3" CD-R
(File this one under the work of Hammock and Robin Guthrie...perhaps what I like so much about Mr. Crosbie is his ability to create music in so many different genres...very nice floating guitar melodies)

Brian Lavelle - Avalonian -Apollolaan - CD-R
(Severely limited release that tracks down Brain at his most ambient...many may know this artist for his dark ambient or drone experiments...this on the other hand is downright beautiful and seems to focus more on the ambient textures with guitars thrown in for good measure)

Eyeballs – Invisible Castle – Blackest Rainbow – CD
(Nice drone atmospheres with a much lighter quality….the artist has done a bit of a 180…in the past one was accustomed to murky drones…now we have a brand new artist altogether and one to keep your eyes on…look for the reprint of this Dead Pilot CD-R as this is when stuff begins to get really interesting)

Cory Allen – Hearing Is Forgetting The Names Of The Things One Hears – Quiet Design
(Rather contained work that seems to focus more on the loops…I liked the last album more…this one sounds much to clean…and to be honest I have not been able to listen to the entire album….as one gets bored around the third song and looses interest….)

Stroma – S/T – Razors And Medicine – Cassette
(Brilliant ambient drones….if you happened to enjoy the works of Marble Sky…please track it down…perhaps this would have gained more attention if it was available of CD…but brilliant music none the less)

Atheus – Soundscapes And Drones – Ghost Sounds – CD
(Deep dubbed ambient atmospheres…very similar to darker GAS material.  Yes it’s been done before…but then again so has the new album from Markus Guentner…recycled music that doesn’t break any new territory but it’s still not short of being brilliant.  I would recommend this but I have noticed that after a few listens it gets a tad monotonous)

Jaxson Payne – Hopen – KOEPT – CD-R
(Perfect ambient for the winter holidays….really seems to fit the seasons as it has a bunch of choral atmospheres that are not cheesy…this took me by surprise and has definitely won me over in the last week….the most played album for the month of December in my books)

Troum/Asianova/Voice of Eye-"Actualization": Further evidence that it is criminal more Asianova is not available on the market.

John Foxx/Louis Gordon-"Shifting City" and "Pleasures of Electricity" reissues: two disc sets with bonus material. Foxx is a little genius.

Pete Namlook-"Pearl": decent ambient album but like his Season's Greetings series this shows his limitations at creating long-form ambient works as they tend to be too long and boring, or trying to imitate other artists.  He should stick to what he does best.
