Hoping to re-visit the so far disappointing new Christopher Willits disc...

"Tiger Flower Circle Sun"
I was disappointed after the first listen,
but like it a lot more the second.
Its grown on me.

I was the same with "Ocean Fire".

I'm trying. I'm on the 4th round and I hear Fripp and plodding repetition and rhythm. Only at the very end does it in any way achieve lift-off. Huge disappointment. The cover art suggests lightness and expansiveness but it's in short supply.

I liked Ocean Fire on first listen.

David Bowie - Outside
My favorite Bowie album post Let's Dance.  Production by Eno.  Dark, weird and churning, at times almost industrial, with a bizarre story underlying and connecting the songs.

David Darling -Cello
Not quite as sublime as Darling's album Dark Wood, but wonderful.  I wish he had a dozen more albums like these.  This represents the ECM label's most "ambient" edge, I think.

I discovered Cello first, so IMO that was the pick of those two discs...easily his best pair of releases.  The 'River' series - a collaboration w/ pianist Kjetil Bjornstadseries - is very solid as well.

Any other recommendations for ambient ECM?

Aglaia - White Maps
Aglaia - Reverberant Skies
Aglaia - Naked Movements

Trio of recent releases on Hic Sunt Leones - each is stunning.  White Maps is perhaps the best of the 3.
Recalls earlier Alio Die and Oophoi records - very expansive and lush...

Interesting perspective on the Aglaia trio--I thought Reverberant Skies was by far the best and the other two I couldn't get into at all.   :)

I know this is not ambient but I am listening to the new Arcade Fire CD "The Suburbs" which I really like so far.

Haven't heard Reverberant Skies, but I enjoyed White Maps.  Thought Nacked Movements was a bit of a throwaway---too many lackluster samples in that one for my taste.

Recently listened to:
Quiet Sun - Mainstream
Christina Kubisch - Licht Himmel
K. Leimer - Degraded Certainties (really liked this one)

For ambient ECM I'd recommend...

Andrey Dergatchev - the return, ost
Jon Hassell - Last Night The Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes In The Street
Ambrose Field - being dufay
Steve Tibbetts - anything ecm release

For ambient ECM I'd recommend...
Steve Tibbetts - anything ecm release

Also Arvo Part's "Alina"

But not *anything* from Tibbetts. "Northern Song" and "Natural Causes" are the most consistently "ambient" of his ECM output. I like them all but these two are the quietest if that's a concern.

yes that's true of Tibbetts, some can be quite noisy and aggressive. That new one Natural Causes is great, I recommend it highly!  :)

My favorite "ambient" release of Tibbetts is "Big Map Idea."  I remember when I first came across his "Yr" album while in college; back then, it was a self-released LP on his Frammis label.  He was kind enough to write back to me.

One extremely ambient ECM CD I'd recommend is Stephan Micus' The Music of Stones, which, is surprisingly very drone-like and was recorded in a cathedral, IIRC.  Another very early ECM release with an ambient feel is Art Lande/Jan Garbarek's Red Lanta.

For some reason I've been listening to a lot of J Geils Band from the 70s. They could really rock. Rediscovering albums I dismissed in the past like Ladies Invited and Hotline.

Still like it a lot.

I think Safe Journey also has some nice ambient moments to it. My intro to Tibbetts was also Yr. I bought the LP at a used record store, I was going through the under dollar bin when I came across this album. I remember reading a pretty good review of it in some magazine that summer, so I took it out and gave it the once over. It had never been played, hand written on it was "promo copy" with dinosaur stickers. The price was 10 cents, no brainer, best 10 cents I ever spent. ;D

One extremely ambient ECM CD I'd recommend is Stephan Micus' The Music of Stones, which, is surprisingly very drone-like and was recorded in a cathedral, IIRC.

I have that on CD, haven't listened to it in years but I remember enjoying it. I'll have to dig it out and give it a listen again.

BTW, still listening to that Jon Hassell bootleg, trying to catch some mojo for next months gig.  :D
Take care.

- Eno :: Another Green World
- Biosphere :: Patashnik

They are both remarkable works.

James McDougall-"Dispossession of Periphery" (Mystery Sea).  Very good and nice addition to the MS catalog.

My first Tibbetts was also Yr, also discovered in college at a used record store.

I used to go into that store(Yaz records? in Madison, WI) almost every other day.  I'd buy stuff just because I liked the cover art.  I think I bought the Tibbetts album because of the art & it was semi-local, from next door in Minnesota I think.  I also got his first self titled album at the same store.

Great music, good memories.
