Sigur Ros-Von.  Their first album, a dark ambient space rock masterpiece.

Swans-The Seer.  The verdict not in on this yet.  But a welcome return of a great band.

Boston-Boston and Don't Look Back.  Don't Look Back, one of the great albums of the 70's!!!

Altus : The Sidereal Cycle 2......A beautiful gem & free download at bandcamp.....step up to the plate and pay for it.  Well worth it!
Carbon Based Lifeforms : Hydroponic Garden..... :)
Ben Fleury Steiner : The Places that Find You......a familiar tone to "Keep a weather eye open" yet with more ethereal space.  Very Special!
Bruno Sanfilippo : Urbs.....I usually don't have a taste for too much field recording in the ambient music I like but this is really so intrinsic to the music and adds just enough to deepen the experience, and it is deep, subtle, curious and meditative.

Speaking of delicate,  finally got Saul Stokes' Metacollage.  A minimal masterpiece.  His music is always cheerful while keeping that subtle sci-fi- cool edge to it.

I liked the stripped-down feel of this one--sort of like Saul distilled his sound down to its essence.

NP:  David Byrne & St. Vincent - Love This Giant (very strange combination of horns, funky beats and odd lyrics, but it seems to work, at least on first listening)

I've found that "Love This Giant" even grows on repeat listenings. Caught them live last week and loved the show. The St. Vincent songs with the brass arrangements felt even better than on her albums. Byrne, who is still in very fine voice, let Annie steal the show.

Exactly.  What few "melodies" if any are more binary, and little interrupted bleeps and implosions of bass appear and disappear.  He makes good use of the silence inbetween- a truly ambient album from Saul Stokes.

Also listening to Andrew Lahiff's Inner Worlds Returning, my first listen of something from Relaxed Machinery label, and it was a good pick. It's well crafted, and it reminds me of Thom Brennan for all the soft, mood-elevating mistiness. Maybe a tad smaller scale and more intricate than Brennan.  It's also on the James Johnson/ Ishq side of the palette- Ishq, because of the occasional echo delay for the birds chirping- Ishq does that a lot with birds and drops of water and it's neat :)

Some real gems out this year:

Loscil - Sketches from New Brighton

A favourite for many reasons, plus I enjoyed doing a portrait session and field recording there with him this summer.

Celer - Engaged Touches

Re-release on Home Normal. I know there's too much Celer out there but this one is a solid set of thick, warm atmospherics.

David Wenngren & Chris Bissonnette - Meridians of Longitude...

Also on Home Normal. Surprised I've seen no other mention of this.

Pjusk - Tele

This duo remains strong and this one had me from the start and bears repeated listenings well.

I was a little unhappy with that new Loscil ... some parts I thought were weak/predictable.
But I did so love the previous album, and this goes back to earlier things.

Been playing some favourites.
- Pub :: Summer   (ha!)
- Gas :: Pop  (classic)
- Keith Berry :: The ear that was sold to a fish  (was a mighty fine re-release on Infraction)
- Philipp Weigl :: lots of tracks from various albums.

In heavy rotation and inspiring while designing:

Autechre: Oversteps
Autechre: Move of Ten
Plaid: Scintilli

This pair of Autechre albums is fantastic, reinvigorates my urge for electronica. I haven't been listening to Autechre for quite some time, it's good to pick up at this point and see they have integrated techniques and are producing this kind of effortless seeming, liquid flowing depth of music that feels fresh and timeless.

Haven't been listening to Plaid in such a long time. This album revisits some of their previous sounds, but that is a good thing, and it is so well done and masterful, feels much more mature and integrated that all previous albums.

I'm pleasantly surprised that there's still some goodness coming out of Warp. I am curious about other acts on the label, but after some investigation nothing has caught my interest enough to want to buy. Anybody else into or getting back into Warp currently? I thought I'd given up on them, what, ten years ago...

lately in the mooddrive of -dare i say- truly enlightning (woofer-friendly) beat-o-tronics (triggered by the latest Earth House Hold alterego of Bvdub!):

earth house hold - when love lived
(what an incredible damn good-feelin' album by Bvdub!! most probably my favorite by him)

DJ Sprinkles - Midtown 120 Blues
federsen - for future times & beings
joergmueller - heavy heart

and a bit more clinical heavy sounding..;

silent harbour (conforce) - silent harbour

anticipating;

mathias grassow - blood moon
upcoming Steve Roach work
harold budd / Bandits of Stature
Bvdub - Home (2CD on Echospace)

yes, all strings, true.
though the mp3's do not disappoint so far.
let's say; 15 short snippets of his 'As Long As I Can Hold My Breath' from Avalon Sutra...
