Hi there AVMO. I have listened to Ecipse Mix. Not sure of it yet, was working whilst it was playing and initially found it a bit heavy on the bass rumble and thus too much whilst trying to concentrate on other matters. Will have to give it another go without distraction.

Off the top of my head, If we are talking long form, I would highly recommend ;

The Passing- melancholy but utterly beautiful
Invisible - Dark and interesting.
A Deeper Silence

And you seriously cannot go wrong with the Structures from Silence - remastered triple masterpiece.

Thanks so much for the response and suggestions, much appreciated. Yeah, I sort of gathered that from the little bits I heard of Eclipse Mix which was what made me somewhat hesitant about buying it. I quite like the concept behind it though, maybe the heavy bass has something to do with that?

Been sampling your recommendations, very interesting stuff. The Passing reminds me a bit of his work with Kelly David on The Long Night (which I think I am absolutely in love with) while Invisible almost gives off a Lustmord-esque sort of vibe. I wonder what a collaboration between those two would sound like? And yes of all of his early work I keep meaning to look into Structures, even just the original release. It's been highly recommended before to me and I've slowly been working my way up to it with his other material from that era.

Thanks again!

Steve's longform pieces are well worth getting into - I was recently listening to Slow Heat and The Dream Circle.
They are a different sort of listen - more akin I think to Robert Rich's sleep concert ideas.

The Passing is an extended version of a track released many years ago and previously only available on a compilation disc.

Many of his releases can 'count' as longform - The Magnificent Void being one of them.

Vir Unis's first releases are worth checking out for a similar vein - The Drift Inside and Aenonian Glow (which I used to put on low level repeat while sleeping.

Then you can explore Roach and Unis collaberations - very different, Body Electric and Blood Machine.
Blood machine has a real sense of strong rhythms that somehow don't move - much like the blood running round the body....hard to explain....

Thank you very much for the recommendations, I'll be sure to look into those. Listening to some of The Dream Circle now and I quite like what I'm hearing. I can see a bit of that Robert Rich connection you're talking about. Somnium has been a favorite for many years.

The Unis collaborations were actually a couple of the first Roach records I got, after Origins and At the Edge of Everything. I enjoy them a lot and find them to be great records to play when working on something very focus-driven and detail-oriented in which case a more amorphous piece wouldn't quite provide that same sense of "drive", you know? That and the rhythms are just fascinating to get lost in. I really love that explanation though, for Blood Machine. I've had that exact feeling when listening to it but couldn't quite sum it up so succinctly. Those two work together very well, would love to see another collaboration at some point though I imagine that's pretty unlikely by now. I've heard nothing of Unis's solo work though, I'll be sure to give those a look too. Have you heard The Winter Ghost?

I've not listened to The Winter Ghost as yet - there are a lot of his releases I've not heard.

I have Lumen (3" cdr), Pulse and Atmo, Stand Still Like the Hummingbird, Thermal Transfer.

All this talk about Vir Unis convinced me to go back and listen to The Winter Ghost. That's the only album of his that I have, but I like it.

I really love The Drift Inside and Aeonian Glow by Vir Unis--some of my favorite ambient from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Time to revisit these!

Recently spinning:

Robert Davies - Elemental Shimmer
I love this guy's work, but sometimes it is hard to say whether one release stands above the rest. I think this one is an exception; I have a hard time turning this one off. Beautiful textures, unusual frequencies, and a bizarre mixture of the natural and unnatural.

I had no idea Unis was so prolific, I'll have to give all of these a look. I really love the sound and aesthetic of Blood Machine and Body Electric so anything along those lines peaks my interest.

Also, recently have been listening to:

Aphex Twin - 10 Mellow Tracks for Free [2015]

A favorite of late with instant reply value. Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is pretty much one of my favorite albums of all time and this selection just seems to perfectly pick up where that left off.

2814 - 2814 [2014]

I love all three of their albums but their debut in particular just makes for the ideal soundtrack to daydreams or the distant city lights on the horizon.

Shpongle - And the day turned to night

20 years old. Still one hell of a trip. Something of a production miracle as well.
Probably the best thing to come out of the entire psy/goa genre.

more rhythm tonight...
24 Frames per second - compilation by musicians from the modulatorESP forum - I particularly like the track 'Red Sky at Night' by The Glimmer Room - great rhythms and excellent build up...

Ian Boddy - The Deep - particularly flow current flow and aquanaut

Tangerine Dream - Oasis

and then the first track from Seven Letters From Tibet....no rhythm and stunning atmosphere...

I really like Oasis. Spent many moons trying track down the dvd/vhs to see the visuals the music was written for. No luck.

Also , Seven Letters, beautiful music. One of the albums that pointed me in the direction of ambient music. Thanks TD .

Current play -

Roach/ Braheny - Western Spaces , so beautiful .

Alio Die + Aglaia - Amitabha
This has some really nice tracks on it, but I didn't find it compelling enough to give it repeated listens.

Steve Brand - Near Series: Threshold
I'm obsessed with this for some reason. Long-form ambient work that captures something that reminds me of early vidnaObmana and Roach collaborations, but with its own voice and personality. Infinitely interesting.

There's nothing else quite like AMM.
