Samual Barber :: Adagio for Strings

Possibly the most beautiful 8 + minutes of music ever written?.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3MHeNt6Yjs

I think it is "just" one of many.
For example, here's a piece that is more or less similar in sound and profoundly moving as well, the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th symphony.

Definitely.....just one of many which this is profoundly beautiful!  I first heard this Mahler Adagietto used as a film score for  "Death in Venice".  When I saw the film I don't know it was Mahler, though looking back now the lead character appears like Mahler.

Greetings folk.

The first download I bought after joining this forum has now been released on a glass mastered CD if anyone is interested.

Circular Ruins and Mystified - Fantastic Journey  Strange, ambient weirdness of gargantuan proportions. On Cold Spring bandcamp and Data Obscura obviously. Great to have it on a silver disc.

I'm a big fan of good symphonic orchestration and I love strings more than anything. All the pieces here are exceptionally beautiful. Mahler was a great admirer of Wagner throughout his life. I myself am a great admirer of Wagner. He created melodies that are not of this world. And he has the most unique layers of sound that I know. His stereo image of the strings is extraordinary and you experience the sound floating up in space. I have seen three Wagner operas so far (Tannhäuser, Parsifal, and yesterday Tristan & Isolde). You have to like Wagner. But those who like it will love his music forever.

The Liebestod at the end of Tristan und Isolde is one of my very favorite pieces of music. So extraordinary and profound.
I can imagine it is even more powerful after listening to the entire opera. I just haven't got around to it yet. 4 hours (?) seems a bit much. Maybe, some day. :)

Arovane : Reihen
I have enjoyed Arovane's music such as Lilies & Tides from around 2000, wonderful electronica but now he has this new release on 12k.

Hammock : Elsewhere
From shoe gazing to modern classical to this beautiful guitar driven ambient.

Noveller : Arrow
I was browsing Steve Roach's Bandcamp site and saw this at the bottom of his new cd page with Michael Streans....."if you like this you may...."  Rarely see portraits used for ambient inspired music.  She currently plays guitar in the Iggy Pop band.

Happy new year all - hopefully a better one...

This is one of my favorite albums - Dissolution by Mathias Grassow...I've had it for years and listen to it regularly.
When I first heard it, it was like listening to a massive deep wall of sound. full of texture, shadow and light.
Every time I change my hi-fi it is as if the sun has come out and I can hear more detail, more shape and movement - the sounds clearer.

Highly recommended.

Pjusk has for me been a music with more of an emphasis on electronica and less on the field recording and true ambient sounds and noise that I love about 12K. There is balance in the music that does not lack the raw complexity of 12K recordings but has a softer smoothness of layered melody of perhaps traditional ambient. It is a special release that is on pre-order. My Cd arrives mid February.

Ooh, I need to check that out. The early Pjusk releases on 12k were some of my favorites.

I've had a few things spinning around here lately:

Nala Sinephro - Space-18
I don't know how to describe this really; it is super interesting, though. Harp, jazz, and modular synths?

Eternell - Mira
I love everything Ludvig makes, but this is special. Very blissed out landscapes.

Emilía - Layover
Beautiful, long-form drones

Slightly off topic...just noticed that Hypnos is no longer able to sell to UK due to VAT changes - I suspect due to bloody Brexit.

Jacob Newman - Ephemeralis Algorithmica
Fun new release. Super creative artist.

Aglaia - Ripples and Details
I like this a lot. It is a bit less experimental that some of the recent releases, and leans more towards fluffy clouds and daydreams.

A friend of ours died recently and I have inherited quite a number of CDs, mainly singer / songwriter....so I've been working through them for keep / sell / charity shop....
As nice as some of it is, I can only listen to so many of them before I can't really hear which I like and don't....
